WELCOME messages
Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.
With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
O
n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!
The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

elcome to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season! I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Saturday, September 22 7:30 pm A prominent figure in the Canadian indie rock scene, Halifax native Joel Plaskett is a man blessed with a sparkling ability to draft catchy folk tunes that sound both effortless and honest. With only the simple strings of a guitar, he can weave a tale that is wistful or winsome, rollicking or radiant. A prolific writer and gracious performer, Plaskett has firmly established himself as a significant contributor to the great tradition of outstanding Canadian folk musicians. Garnering his first Juno in 2010 for the triple triumph, Three, he is also an avid collector of East Coast Music Awards and has earned a Polaris Prize nomination. Along with his band The Emergency, Plaskett recently released Scrappy Happiness, a collection of the best moments of his career that stands alone as one of his most inspired works. With plenty of critical accolades, Joel Plaskett remains true to his roots, penning raw, clever hits with a warmth and charm that capture meticulous moments in time. A fresh new face on the Halifax music scene, Mo Kenney radiates a vulnerability and fearlessness that instantly captivates audiences. She has garnered admiration from artists she has opened for, and counts among her fans, Ron Sexsmith, the Crash Test Dummies, and Gordie Sampson. A versatile songwriter with a distinct voice and compelling lyrics, Mo has been described as an ‘artist to watch.’ It was these qualities that brought her to the attention of Joel Plaskett, who worked with Mo in his Scotland Yard Studio to produce her debut album, due to be released September 25.

Friday, September 28 & Saturday, September 29 7:30 pm Bboyizm is dedicated to the promotion, preservation, authenticity and true essence of all forms of street dance. Under the direction of choreographer and B-boy Crazy Smooth (Yvan Soglo), ten of Canada’s most talented dancers merge stunning athleticism and dazzling cohesiveness to shatter preconceived notions about b-boying and hip hop, and celebrate self-expression with a breathless foray of hip hop dance styles.
“The show is an engaging and intelligent journey of spirit, of dance and of life. This is a smart new presentation with heart and humour.” – Tedd Robinson, 10 Gates Dancing Inc. Working right on the breaking edge of the dance world, IZM asks the audience to connect with the dancers and rewards their attention with moves that defy expectations. IZM is an artistic piece that transcends age, race, and gender; reaching below the surface where emotions live. Whether you are intimately connected to dance or simply looking to enjoy something new, this socially relevant show is an awe-inspiring experience that will leave you with a sense of wanting more! As part of St. Albert’s StArts Fest during Canada’s Culture Days, Bboyizm will be offering a free workshop, open to the public, on September 29 from 2:30 – 3:30 pm at the Arden Theatre. sponsored by

Thursday, October 4 7:30 pm Six Shooter Records’ Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet tie the musical knot with the debut of their new band, Whitehorse, marrying their talent and chemistry on stage as a smoldering duo. Gutsy and resolute in their pursuits of sound and substance, Luke and Melissa’s fusion of the personal and professional brings to mind the road-tested romance of Johnny Cash and June Carter. Individually, Luke and Melissa have been recognized with awards and nominations from the Juno Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Awards, the Hamilton Music Awards, the Independent Music Awards and Polaris Music Prize. Together, Luke and Melissa create music that cascades forth, rushing like currents fluid and electric. More than the sum of considerable talents, Whitehorse showcases the rarity of true give and take in partnership, uniting falcon with songbird to dramatic effort. One year after their debut, Whitehorse returns in ambitious fashion with The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss. The album reveals the range of creative possibility that only expands as Whitehorse develops and focuses their sound. Song by song, the record takes surprising turns; while each track confidently bears Whitehorse’s signature guitar work and love-knotted vocals, their willingness to take risks and ability to pull them off makes for captivating listening. sponsored by

MATT ANDERSEN Saturday, October 6 7:30 pm The best performing songwriters, the ones who really mean what they’re singing about, tend to come from areas known for hard times and hard work. Like say, Perth-Andover, a rural blue-collar village in the Canadian Maritime province of New Brunswick, and the home of acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist Matt Andersen whose music echoes that rough existence but also the warmth of family life. “Everybody knows everybody. My dad worked as a logger pretty much his whole life. But there’s always been music around: My grandfather played fiddle, my mom plays piano in church. Most of my cousins have had bands at some point. Whenever there’s a get-together there’s always about nine or ten fiddles or guitars in the room.” – Matt Andersen Matt began to build his name on the Canadian circuit in 2002 with his debut album, One Size Never Fits; his imposing voice and slashing slide guitar making a monolithic impression on audiences across the country. By 2009, Matt had become a frequent guest on Stuart McLean’s CBC traveling radio show The Vinyl Café, and had completed his fourth tour of the UK, where The Times called him “Canada’s greatest guitarist.” In 2010, he became the first Canadian to win Memphis’ famed International Blues Challenge. Matt’s newest album, Coal Mining Blues, produced by Colin Linden (appearing at the Arden on October 31 in Bluebird North: Halloween Blues), is a rich vein of new songs which range from the self-explanatory Work Hard for the Luxury, to rollicking up-tempo cuts like Lay it on the Line and Fired Up. His powerful brawny voice makes for an exhilarating night of music, with a down home touch.

De TEMPS ANTAN
Friday, October 19 7:30 pm It takes a special blend of musical flair to create memorable songs of yesteryear! Songs with a hint of contemporary—dosed with uncontrolled laughter, deep-rooted couplets and sudden, impromptu shifts—that speak to familiar rhythms of the past… welcome to the original musical stylings of De Temps Antan! Since 2003, Éric Beaudry, André Brunet and Pierre-Luc Dupuis have been exploring and performing time-honoured melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s musical past. Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki and a number of other instruments, these three virtuosos provide audiences with a passionate performance that blends the unmistakable joie de vivre found only in traditional Quebec music. Between Éric’s rich vocal range and unquestionable talent on stringed instruments, André’s unwavering energy and refined style, and Pierre-Luc’s unique humour and warm-hearted charisma, this will be a musical evening unlike any other.
“... you get a sense of the richness of just one little corner of [our] country. Our aim is to keep the essence of that music, but to have an open-minded attitude—in short, to let it live.”
– Pierre-Luc Dupuis
