MAYOR

OF ST. ALBERT

It’s time to celebrate! For three decades, the Arden Theatre has provided our community with the gift of memorable artistic experiences. Talented artists from far and wide and even from our own backyard, have brought their passion for music, dance, theatre, comedy and film to our city to share with you, our friends and dedicated patrons. While we reflect on 30 years of cultivating vibrant cultural expression past and present and toast the Arden Theatre for the significant impact it has had in the city of St. Albert, we hope you do the same. What has been your unforgettable moment here at the Arden? I invite you to share your story with us during this 30th anniversary year. Without your dedicated support, we wouldn’t have such a milestone to celebrate. Thank you and enjoy this commemorative season.

message from the

PRESENTER Welcome to the 30thAnniversary season of the Arden! Before beginning my work here at the Arden Theatre, I was a long time patron of this venue, attending countless performances with my family throughout the majority of my life. The Arden is a vital part of the community of St. Albert, and the greater Edmonton region, and I know firsthand what kind of impact it has on the lives of its patrons, both young and old. I look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary with you and hearing about your favourite memories from the past 30 years at the Arden.

7:30 pm

Since 1991, alternative quartet Sloan, has been a household name on the Canadian indie rock scene. Jay Ferguson, Andrew Scott, Chris Murphy and Patrick Pentland have built a tremendously dedicated following as one of the country’s original super groups. Their power pop hits showcase each individual talent as distinct song-writers and instrumentalists, while developing an integrated sound that has long defined the group for years. As Juno Award and multiple East Coast Music Award winners, this Torontobased band of anthemic rockers has a lauded discography of one dozen albums. Every record allows Sloan to re-emerge with a fêted collection of songs, while still maintaining strong ties to their stylistic roots. From lyrically-exposed confessionals to brass-inflected exotic pop, emotionally stark ballads to stormy psychedelia, Sloan will long be rock regulars.

Current Swell with Opening Guests Jon and Roy Friday, October 4 Saturday, October 5 – SOLD OUT 7:30 pm On Saturday, October 5, join us at 6:30 PM for a 30th anniversary celebration in the main lobby of St. Albert Place. Complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The Arden celebrates 30 years of programming in welcoming homegrown talent Current Swell to its stage. Making their much anticipated debut, St. Albert natives Scott Stanton and Dave Lang, Victoria’s Chris Petersen, and Ontario’s Ghosty, make listener-supported music. Their gradual gain in momentum from a decidedly grass roots level to worldwide touring, has been of a steady direction which has allowed the group to remain authentic and true to their upbeat folk roots. Now, they’re making their mark as independently as ever with a “surf rock” sound. In two special performances, Current Swell will capture the crowd with honest and heartfelt songs from Long Time Ago, their fourth album that reflects the band’s years of experience on the road. sponsored by

The Irrelevant Show Friday, October 11

|

7:30 pm

CBC Edmonton’s sketch comedy program once again returns to the Arden for a smorgasbord of hilarity. For five seasons, The capital region’s finest comedians and improvisers unite for an ever-popular, live taping of The Irrelevant Show. From the everyday to the surreal, typical sketches from the CBC Radio One series delve humorously into popular culture. Through slapstick scenes about family life, dating, the workplace, and even all-out crazy flights of imagination, head writer Neil Grahn, along with Mark Meer, Donovan Workun, Jana O’Connor, Marianne Copithorne and Leona Brausen will leave you in absolute stitches.

“The live recordings are a fantastic experience. The actors are performing the sketches for a live audience for the first time; the crowd gets to see sound effects and music created right in front of them: suddenly the whole show comes to life right before your eyes. And the audience loves it when things go wrong — our cast is made up of very funny improvisers — often the between-sketch banter is a highlight of the night.” – Peter Brown, CBC

A New York Festivals and Canadian Comedy Award winner, The Irrelevant Show offers something for every humorous taste. sponsored by

Corin Raymond Co-presented with Litfest and StarFest Performing his hit Edmonton Fringe play Bookworm. Friday, October 18

|

7:30 pm

Corin Raymond is a natural born storyteller with a voice of overwhelming sincerity. Be it through dramaturgy or music, he opens his audience up to intimate experiences and moments that make you who you are. In his acclaimed one-man show, Bookworm, Corin invites you to an emotional territory of his childhood that will leave you hanging on to his every word. His beautiful, inspiring, and revealing story reveals a relationship with his father built through experiences of books shared.

“Raymond pulls us in and connects with his audience in a way many performers try, but few succeed. Rarely have I seen so many knowing nods or emotive sounds come from an audience.” – CVV Magazine Effortlessly painting imagery in our minds of stories shared, Corin will also perform eloquent and honest music from his double album, Paper Nickels. Crowdfunded entirely by Canadian Tire money, the roots troubadour gives light to lyrics of unsung Canadian tunesmiths.

The Sadies Saturday, October 19

|

7:30 pm

Canadian indie-rock band, The Sadies, is one of the finest live acts around. Having defied musical categorization since they formed in 1994, the quartet draws on a range of influences, from country to psychedelia, to create a reputable mix of sound all their own. Their talent and success lies in the merging of disparate elements; a haunting and timeless spiritual quality, pensive lyrics, and themes of desolation and love. Shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2010, The Sadies edge closer and closer to an increasingly unique and disparate sound with every album made, including their latest, Internal Sounds. Off the heels of a national tour in support of Neil Young, having often collaborated with Blue Rodeo, Jon Langford, and The Tragically Hip, and with family ties to Canadian icons The Good Brothers (Dallas and Travis Good are the sons of Bruce Good), this band is here to stay.

Spotlight on Row P, Seat 41 When the Arden Theatre installed new theatre seating in 2011, Janice Eglinski was one of the first people to sponsor a seat in the Arden’s seat campaign. Janice chose seat P41, located at the end of the very back row. Everyone has their favourite seat, but what’s the story behind P41? Janice made her donation in memory of her sister, Debbie Jamieson who passed away in 2006. Debbie taught for many years in St. Albert at Bellerose Composite, Lorne Akins, W.D. Cuts, Paul Kane and Memorial Composite High in Stony Plain. She touched many hearts and positively influenced countless students with her spirit and care. Debbie had a reputation for staging lavish musical productions and holding auditions where everyone won a part. Rehearsals began in September for February shows and her students learned that everyone had a place and it was okay to be different. A memorial seat at the Arden, the seat where Debbie used to sit during rehearsals, was a good fit for Janice because her sister was passionate about the arts, especially drama and music. “Deb was a bright light who attracted students as a teacher, mentor and friend”, says Janice. The plaque on the armrest of P41 reads: “The show must go on. Remembering Debbie Jamieson.” Debbie’s motto was: no waiting around – live life for today. What are YOU waiting for?
