Message from the Mayor Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of art and culture at the Arden Theatre. Colourful sounds, vibrant sights, and diverse artists of all forms blend to ignite a rich season of entertainment on the Arden stage in its 2014-2015 season. Every performance, every artist, every lyric to a song, leaves each one of our patrons with a singularly unique and memorable experience, which is a truly special offering that we take pride in. In early 2014, St. Albert was named the #1 place to live in Canada according to MoneySense magazine. One of many contributing factors to this honour is our city’s emphasis on cultural expression through the arts. For 31 years, the Arden Theatre has been at the very root of cultivating opportunities for individuals of all ages and demographics to escape into a valued world of artistic experiences. Ever-evolving musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world share their art in our theatre, engaging our audiences in unforgettable moments. Our stage. Your experience. Thank you for giving us many occasions this season to invite you to be engaged and entertained.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City
Message from the presenter There is nothing quite like the anticipation of waiting for a show to begin: the lights dim, a hush falls over the crowd and everyone eagerly waits for the first note of a song or the performer to appear. The energy is electric, and then the show begins... Some of the most memorable moments of my life have taken place in performing arts venues. I delight in the cultural events that engage all of my senses and transport me to another place. I distinctly remember the performances that have had me so mesmerized I’ve forgotten to breathe, the hair on my arms stood up on end and my fingers and toes began to tingle. These are experiences that cannot be duplicated and the moments I keep in the back of my mind when programming each Arden season. As I start to assemble each season, I think about the experiences I want you, our patrons, to have in the theatre, how each performer will engage with you, and how, for even just the briefest moments, you can escape the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life. I hope that this season you embrace all of the exciting performances we have lined up for you and allow yourself to be moved by the incredible world of art and culture at the Arden.

carlos nunez Wednesday, September 17 \ 7:30 pm If you think Spain is just flamenco, you are about to make the most amazing discovery. From Galicia – Spain’s northwest region – comes a vibrant, uniquely expressing sound embodying Celtic roots and modern Spanish energy. The multiinstrumentalist ambassador behind the irresistible spirit of his native country, and the undisputed master of Galicia’s signature musical instrument, the gaita (or Galician bagpipes) is Carlos Núñez. Núñez is one of Galicia’s most revered artists, undisputed as the tradition’s greatest piper and a global force in the international music scene. His music draws on influences that range from ancient and contemporary Celtic, to Medieval and Baroque, and also borrows from the sounds and styles of the places where Galicians have settled, including Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, even the United States. With the technical prowess of a classical music virtuoso and the charisma of a rock star, Carlos Núñez bridges distinct Celtic traditions with passion and care in his latest album, Inter-Celtic.

With the release of Jericho Road, Eric Bibb has completed an ambitious project that has been several years in the making — and which features a cast of old and new friends from around the world.
“On April 3, 1968, the night before his death, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King urged us to follow
the example of the Good Samaritan, saying: ‘Ultimately, you cannot save yourself without saving others’. If this record has a theme, that’s it in a nutshell: Have mercy, have a heart.” – Eric Bibb
Eric Bibb’s universal quest for freedom in peace through the deep warmth of his voice is reflected in his rich tapestry of sound that melds Blues, folk, gospel and roots. The multiple Blues Music Awards winner and Grammy nominated artist is joined by special guest, Montreal-based multi-instrumentalist, Michael Jerome Browne, to perform songs from his inspirational new album.

Little time or appetite to make the change
School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.
City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer
The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s
MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-
ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping
and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4
ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette
WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

dover quartet Friday, October 3 \ 7:30 pm Following their stunning sweep of the Banff International String Quartet Competition last fall, the Dover Quartet has catapulted to international stardom, becoming one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. The New Yorker recently dubbed them “the young American string quartet of the moment,” and The Strad raved that the Quartet is “already pulling away from their peers with their exceptional interpretive maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble.” The exceptional musicianship and interpretive maturity of this young ensemble is astounding. Formed at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, the Dover Quartet brings a uniquely youthful enthusiasm and finely honed conviction to traditional classical repertoire. In 2013-14, they became the first ever Quartet-inResidence for the Curtis Institute of Music. The Dover Quartet’s performance is funded in part by The Banff Centre, through the Freeze Family Career Development Fund of The Banff International String Quartet Competition. fred eaglesmith Travelling Show Friday, October 10 \ 7:30 pm Fred Eaglesmith is a veteran of the music industry and at the same time is about as far away from actually participating in today’s music industry as one could be. Never operating within anyone’s boundaries, he continues to set the standard for independent artists everywhere. While blazing his own often colourful path he has avoided most of the traps and pitfalls of his peers, his career reads like a manual on how to succeed in music today without trying to fit into the traditional business models. The heart of rock and roll is alive and well with Eaglesmith’s 20th album, Tambourine. Created during a month long session in an old hall in the hamlet of Vittoria, Ontario, Fred consciously stayed far away from anything that is popular in the mainstream music right now. The result a combination of his craftsmanship in songwriting and a fusion of rock ‘n’ roll circa 1966, Motown, and even Tejano influences.

on H32 & H33 With the Arden Theatre’s recent renovations we launched the Take a Seat campaign, encouraging patrons to sponsor a seat, but with a twist. We also wanted to know why they chose specific seats. Everyone has their favourite seat, and we’re learning that every seat has a story.
The best seats in the house . . . can be yours!
When Bryan and Linda Reed sponsored their regular seats, we were curious to find out what made H32 & H33 so special.
As long time Edmonton Folk Festival goers, the Arden Theatre was known to them, but really not on their radar. As time went on they began to take note of the great programming the Arden offered, year after year. Finally they took in a performance, and were hooked. “We then fell in love with the Arden, both the staff and what they accomplish. The variety at the Arden has introduced us to many wonderful new experiences and has created many wonderful memories. When it came time to decide which seats we wanted, there was no doubt. We chose H32 and H33 specifically because they are easily accessible and have a great view of the entire stage.” - Bryan Reed What are YOU waiting for?
Put your name on your favourite seat or give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, promote your business or make a memorial tribute – the possibilities are endless.
Centre Stage: $1000 | Spotlight: $500 | Footlights: $250 Your benefit – eligible seat donations will be recognized with: An engraved armrest plaque; A tax receipt; and You’ll be able to purchase your seat for any show in the 2014-2015 Professional Series during an exclusive pre-sale* at the Arden Theatre Box Office.
