MESSAGE FROM THE
Mayor
As The Botanical Arts City, we place great emphasis on cultural expression through the arts, and we are honoured and privileged to welcome musicians, speakers, dancers and theatre artists from every province and territory to St. Albert, in the interest of commemorating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. On behalf of City Council, thank you for joining us on an artistic journey across this great country we call home. We hope your experiences at The Arden Theatre offer you many moments to expand your sense of what it truly means to be Canadian.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City
MESSAGE FROM THE
Presenter
Oh, Canada! We’re tackling new territories this season – literally.
When I set out last fall to start programming the 2016-2017 season, I was inspired to celebrate Canada’s fast-approaching 150th birthday by assembling a season of performances, films and events from all across Canada. This season we’re going on a cross-country road trip, stopping in every province and territory to make new friends and visiting with some of our long-time Arden Theatre family.
We live in a country where we are privileged enough to openly honour and celebrate the art and culture of our Indigenous Peoples, our ancestors and newcomers to Canada. We are a country rich with resources, but I believe it is the people, as well as our artistic and cultural talent, that provides the greatest wealth and reward. This year, I hope that you enjoy your artistic and cultural journey across this vast landscape. I look forward to reconnecting with you all in the 2017-2018 season upon my return from maternity leave. In the meantime, I hope you’ll welcome the wonderful Neil LeGrandeur, who will be taking on the Presenter duties in my absence.

STRANGEBrew ONTARIO
Sunday, September 18 • 2 PM Filmed in Canada with tons of Canuck talent, Strange Brew is a Canadian comedy cult classic, eh. In case you weren’t around in the early 80s, a couple of “hosers” named Bob and Doug McKenzie made the leap from their popular SCTV skit, The Great White North, to the big screen. Essentially a mockery of Canadian infatuation in the good ol’ days with beer, bacon, donuts and hockey, viewers fell in love with these average guys and their plaid shirts, ski toques, fur-lined parkas, overblown accents and immature jokes. So when the opportunity came along for Bob and Doug, er, creators Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, to make their Hollywood debut in Strange Brew, a new era of die-hard fans were born. Now, over 30 years later, the beer-belching brothers’ comedy continues to make audiences laugh-out-loud with their buffoonery and barrage of references about Canadian culture. At the heart of Strange Brew is a deranged villain, Brewmeister Smith, who hatches a plot to take over the world by way of tainted beer. This ‘strange brew, when guzzled by beer drinkers, renders them mindless and easily controllable. That is, until two intellectually challenged schemers, motivated by the thought of free beer, stop the dastardly plan. So, sit back, relax and enjoy this piece of Canadian history. And if you don’t like it, well, you can take-off, eh!

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. SHELDONCasavant ALBERTA
Tuesday, September 20 • 2 PM • St. Albert Community Hall Edmonton’s Sheldon Casavant isn’t your run-of-the-mill magician and this is no ordinary show. Recognized as one of Canada’s most sought after performers, his unique style uses the art of magic to inspire curiosity, and courage to imagine the impossible. With sleight of hand and modern illusions, Casavant shares his own story of discovery as he redefines magic in this logic-defying, mind-bending performance. Borrowed items vanish and reappear, inanimate objects are brought to life, minds are read telepathically and audience members are called on stage to perform outrageous feats. What started out with paid performances at birthday parties and community events throughout his teens, has turned into a life’s passion – performing in front of thousands of people across the globe for over a decade. In his show Exploring the Impossible, Casavant parallels his childhood interest in magic to that of young Harry Houdini, arguably the most famous magician of all time. By learning magic from a bygone era, Casavant is able to put personal twists on these “classics” and create a contemporary style of magic uniquely his own. For this award-winning illusionist, magic is more than trickery and deception. It’s an art form refined over years of practice that allows him to bring a story to life, create a feeling of mystery, and engage emotionally with his audience – big or small. So sit back, laugh and lose yourself in this captivating experience.
“Sheldon was amazing! He captivated the whole audience; they were glued to his every move. His interactive show energized the crowd and kept them on the edge of their seats.” ~ Rocky Mountain Business Seminar

ONTARIO
Friday, September 23 & Saturday, September 24 • 7:30 PM An accomplished singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Royal Wood has established himself as a true musical talent. Over a decade into a career that has been built on touring, eight albums, and pure passion, Wood returns to the Arden stage with new music created using an ‘old approach’. Armed with a reinvigorated spark, the multiple Juno Award nominee admits his 2016 album Ghost Light was a throwback to writing and recording simply for the joy of creating something authentic, honest, and open – like when he was a kid. Playing everything from piano and guitar solos to bass, keys and percussion, Wood allowed his ‘ghost’ light to shine from within. In fact, performing on almost 90 per cent of the album, his new music exudes raw emotion and oozes a songwriting feel from the 60s and 70s – no surprise to dedicated fans of the Ontario-born balladeer who cut his teeth on the vintage vinyl tunes of Elton John, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Without modern day studio technology, like autotuning and digital perfection, Ghost Light is as sincere, warm and inviting as it gets. A consummate performer, Wood, along with a new five-piece band, brings class and craft to his live performances. His candour of lyrics and virtuosity is ever astonishing – a royal treat indeed.
“From instrument solos, to perfect harmonies, to Royal Wood’s soulful voice, this album lifts the veil on musicianship and shows the heart of a true musician.” ~ Spill Magazine, Toronto

MONKEYJUNK ONTARIO
Friday, September 30 • 7:30 PM Known for pushing the boundaries, Ottawa-based trio MonkeyJunk offers audiences a refreshing blend of self-proclaimed swamp-rock roots and blues. The band’s fiery style of no-holds-barred instrumental attacks continue to propel the group into a league all their own. In fact, since 2008 their collective trophy case now features 20 Maple Blues Awards, including an award for Entertainer of the Year in 2014, two Canadian Independent Music Awards and a Juno Award for Best Blues Album. With Tony D on lead guitar, Steve Marriner on vocals, bass, harp and keys, and Matt Sobb on drums, the trio’s strong and confident hybrid of high octane rock ‘n’ roll, swamp blues and uptown funk continues to amass a large following of devoted fans, affectionately known as ‘MonkeyJunkies’. With four albums under their belt, MonkeyJunk’s passion, conviction and dedication to their music is evident with every lick, beat and lyric. Now, performing tracks from their 2015 album, Moon Turn Red released with Edmonton’s Stony Plain records, the band explores grooves they’ve never hit on before – experimenting with new sounds to produce a smooth mix of electric blues, gritty rock and a bit of soul thrown in for good measure. With a mix of rock anthems and heartfelt ballads, this scorching selection of gutsy tunes will have fans dancing in their seats.
“The incendiary Moon Turns Red, the trio throw down an eclectic mix of songs that sets the bar doubly high for any pretenders in the business.” ~ Winnipeg Free Press Note: It’s going to get loud! This is an amplified performance and ear plugs will be available.

Mohamed FAHMY Media in the Age of Terror BRITISH COLUMBIA
Saturday, October 1 • 7:30 PM Journalist and free speech activist Mohamed Fahmy’s story is one that gripped headlines around the world. After being jailed in Egypt for allegedly conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood, an extremist group, to circulate false news while working as the Al Jazeera English Bureau Chief in Cairo, the award-winning Canadian-Egyptian journalist, along with two other colleagues, spent over 400 days in an Egyptian maximum-security prison before being pardoned of all charges in 2015 amid unprecedented international outcry. Imprisoned alongside members of ISIS, al-Qaida and other groups, Fahmy witnessed firsthand how extremism spreads. Now, in his gripping keynote address Media in the Age of Terror: How the War on Terror Became a War on Journalism, Fahmy talks about the circumstances surrounding being falsely accused of being a terrorist, offers unparalleled insights into the motivations of insurgents, and explains how he survived solitary confinement and imprisonment with hardened extremists. Pointing to an unparalleled era of attacks on journalists by governments and radicals alike, Fahmy describes how press freedoms, ethics and human rights are being threatened, and the importance of objective reporting during the war on terror. Once known for his coverage of global events for news organizations such as the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and CNN, Fahmy currently teaches at both the University of British Columbia and University of Michigan. Founder of the Fahmy Foundation for Free Press, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting journalists imprisoned worldwide, Fahmy is also writing a memoir on his experiences.
“If you ever doubt that campaigns and advocacy make a difference… I am living proof that they do.” ~ Mohamed Fahmy

Edmonton’s Andrea House is a singer full of melody and a songwriter with a sensibility that floats between greats such as Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday and Willie Nelson. With the pureness of a songbird, her music pays homage to a simpler time, when melodies were carefully woven and lyrics told stories of depth and meaning. Garnering critical acclaim and fans from around the world throughout her career, House finds her own unique way to serve each song, keeping in mind all of the great female artists who came before her. For House, early memories learning to sing church hymns in the southern Alberta town she grew up in and listening to her parent’s country music record collection, lead to a life-long love affair with country-influenced renditions of jazz standards. Ever the songwriter, House is a musician who is simply looking for a great song to sing. Her charm, honesty, humility and humour will leave audiences in awe. She is a personable performer whose melodies and lyrics instantly make audiences feel at home.
“She conjures up complex emotional terrain – with moods of tender reflection, sadness and infectious joy – as she taps into deeper and deeper layers of the truth…She isn’t the first person to find insights into the universal experiences of relationships, family or motherhood, but House manages to do so with a voice and lyrical touch that revels in unbridled honesty at a pitch that’s hard to ignore.” ~ Roger Levesque, The Edmonton Journal
