How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. hot club edmonton GYPSY-JAZZ | SWING
Tuesday, September 26, 2017 | 2 PM St. Albert Community Hall
Hot Club Edmonton combines unique prairie flavours, sweet rhythms and sultry vocals. The band’s music is reminiscent of the smoky nightclubs of the 1930s Paris jazz scene. Their musical style is heavily influenced by gypsy-jazz legends Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, whose band Quintette du Hot Club de France inspired the local trio’s choice for their band name in tribute to the original. Hot Club Edmonton blends the talents of guitarist Clinton Pelletier, vocalist Thea Pelletier and violinist Daniel Gervais. Clinton began playing guitar at age 11 under the tutelage of his father, Freddie Pelletier. Thea grew up listening to jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Billie Holiday on the radio. Daniel started playing violin when he was five years old and he is the only Albertan ever to win the Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Competition. In 2010, Hot Club Edmonton’s debut album won a Western Canadian Music Award for Best Instrumental Album. The band has shared the stage with Herbie Hancock and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, recorded for CBC’s Canada Live, and showcased at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. The group’s music will delight you with its gypsy-jazz flavour spiced with a pinch of prairie pizazz.

New art in Public Places Sculpture Full of Hope and Promise
International Children’s Festival of the Arts Honoured A new addition to St. Albert’s Art in Public Places collection, Becoming was created to help commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival of the Arts. Created by award-winning Ontario artist, curator and educator Ted Fullerton, this larger-than-life sculpture depicts the iconic Monarch butterfly ready to emerge from its cocoon – a magical moment where transformation is realized. Symbolic of the change from youth to adulthood, the butterfly also represents the Festival experience that continues to change the lives of children through the arts. “This sculpture acts as a beautiful poetic metaphor for ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ that is understood globally for possibilities, growth and transformation,” explains Fullerton. “As a result, this sculpture’s presence will be lasting, profound and significant for everyone with its mystery and possibility of hope and promise.” Highly visible in the lobby of St. Albert Place, Fullerton was honoured to have his artwork embraced within the architecture of Douglas Cardinal, someone he greatly admires. Becoming was one of three pieces unveiled in May 2017 as part of The Butterfly Project. Other sculptures included Butterfly Kaleidoscope located in Founders’ Walk Phase 2 (created by Karen Ho Fatt Lee) and Feeder located in Lafleur Park (created by Tony Stallard). To date, St. Albert boasts over 300 unique pieces in its collection of sculptures, murals and paintings. “With communities that continue to grow so quickly, public art becomes even more important because it reinforces that sense of place and identity – that people have a sense of belonging and becoming,” he says. “I hope this sculpture resonates with each individual in a very personal and private way.” Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Policy, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging. From humble beginnings in small-town America, singing on their front porch in Kentucky, Phil and Don Everly established a musical career that spanned three decades. They inspired countless artists who followed them, including icons such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Brothers Zachary and Dylan Zmed fondly recreate The Everly Brothers’ signature two-part harmonies in this show that honours their enduring legacy and explores the stories behind their legendary music. The Zmed brothers grew up in Los Angeles in a show-business family; they are the sons of Adrian Zmed, of the film Grease 2 and the TV series TJ Hooker. In January 2016, the brothers developed The Everly Brothers Experience show, which allowed them to proudly share their talents and brotherly love with audiences. The Zmed Brothers continually aim to “honour the aesthetics of [the Everly Brothers’] iconic sound and honour their unique place in music history all while telling [their] own personal story.” Follow Zachary and Dylan back in time to a bygone era in this often catchy and sometimes melancholy homage to rock ‘n’ roll pioneers, where you will enjoy hits such as Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, and All I Have to Do Is Dream.
“Lovingly recreates the genius of Phil and Don without using gimmicks.” – The Washington Times

Thursday, October 12, 2017 | 7:30 PM Named one of Canada’s most influential marketers by Marketing Magazine, Terry O’Reilly understands modern marketing and its shift from one-way persuasion to mutual engagement – where the goal is to win over audiences by influence rather than overt selling. O’Reilly began his life in advertising in 1963, when he was discovered on the children’s show Romper Room and picked to star in a TV commercial at age four. Since then, he has won countless writing and directing awards and created campaigns for top brands including Tim Hortons, Labatt and Pepsi. As host of CBC Radio’s Under The Influence, he has earned a reputation as an industry leader and been honoured with a lifetime achievement award in the field. Under The Influence was voted Best New Podcast of 2011 by iTunes with over a million Canadian listeners tuning in every week. For the first time on The Arden Theatre stage, O’Reilly shares insights from his latest book to help local companies and organizations outsmart their competitors without breaking the bank. This I Know: Marketing Lessons from Under The Influence was published in February 2017; in it, O’Reilly collected tips based on his decades-long advertising career. co-presented by

Saturday, October 14, 2017 | 7:30 PM
The SteelDrivers’ bluegrass is as strong as high-proof moonshine with an
extra dose of backwater attitude. This five-piece band from Nashville weaves mandolin, guitar, banjo, bass and fiddle into a blend of beauty and grit with edgy vocals that evoke raw emotion. The band currently includes Richard Bailey, Mike Fleming, Tammy Rogers, Gary Nichols and Brent Truitt. Bailey, Fleming and Rogers formed the group, along with original singer Chris Stapleton, in 2005. After two founding members left in 2010 and 2011, Nichols and Truitt joined the group which created an old-school bluegrass sound that echoed the original while lending fresh nuances. The band’s latest release, The Muscle Shoals Recordings, reflects its origins in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a city that produced some of the greatest soul music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, including major hits by Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. The album was recorded in the famous NuttHouse Recording Studio. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and received the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. After more than a decade, The SteelDrivers have hit their stride as one of the genre’s most exceptional acts, bringing their powerful songwriting, lively vocals and boisterous bluegrass beats to North American audiences.
“If you like the bluegrass sound but would prefer it with a bit more attitude, The SteelDrivers’ latest album, The Muscle Shoals Recordings, is a near-perfect combination.” – Rolling Stone

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 | 7:30 PM
During their first Canadian and European tour, Port Cities was a surprise hit at The Arden Theatre, earning a standing ovation as an opener for Canadian singer-songwriter Rose Cousins. Now, the Cape Breton band returns as a feature act!
The band’s name was chosen to reflect and honour the traditions of port cities as places “where cultures and histories collide, [and] where goods and ideas are imported and absorbed into the local bloodstream.” Their roots-rock sound is based on jazz, folk, and soul influences with overtones of pop sensibility and catchy Nashville-country warmth. This trio of celebrated songwriters with intertwining roots in the Maritime music scene met at a songwriters’ workshop in 2011. Carleton Stone, Dylan Guthro and Breagh MacKinnon formally became a band shortly after touring together as solo artists in 2014. Stone has released three solo albums and written songs for other artists. Guthro has worked in Nashville with Grammy-winner Gordie Sampson and won a Music Nova Scotia Award for New Artist Recording of the Year for his debut recording All That’s True. MacKinnon is a jazzinfluenced singer whose 2012 album, Where the Days Went, was nominated for an East Coast Music Award. In February, 2017, Back To The Bottom, from Port Cities’ debut album, reached No. 1 on CBC Radio’s Top 20.
