BLUES/ROOTS Thursday, September 20 • 7:30 PM • $40
A life in music was all but a given for Eric Bibb with the combination of his family tree and the nurturing, creative environment he grew up in, all acting as the compass for his life in music. His father Leon was an acclaimed actor and singer, his uncle was pianist composer John Lewis of Modern Jazz Quartet fame, while family friends included Pete Seeger and his godfather Paul Robeson.
Singing, playing guitar and performing were embraced by Bibb from an early age but his world was opened through academic studies before immersing himself in pre-War blues and exploring the music of many diverse global cultures. For 45 years, the trajectory of Bibb’s career has enjoyed a steady, purposeful upward momentum resulting in an extraordinarily faithful and large fan base across a number of continents. It has been an organic equation that has created his always relevant and fruitful career. His dedication to recording has resulted in an exceptional discography, with standout recordings being Diamond Days, Booker’s Guitar, Deeper In The Well and Migration Blues. His engaging live performances are built around his warm, yet powerful emotive voice, and tasty guitar playing and it all sets him not just at the top of his game but the entire acoustic blues genre. What a journey it has been for Eric Bibb, and one with many more chapters to be written.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. s n i s u o C e s Ro ROOTS/POP Friday, September 28 • 7:30 PM • $36 For more than a decade Rose Cousins’ itinerary was one of considerable touring, writing and recording. It was all-consuming and by 2013 the PEI native found herself requiring a seismic shift in how her day-to-day life unfolded. Cousins’ body of work had received critical acclaim which led to her performing in the finest of venues and headline appearances at prestigious festivals in Europe and North America. She had also taken home the Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer of the Year in 2012 and her album We Made A Spark won the 2013 Juno Award for Best Solo Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. With burnout at the doorstep, Cousins reacted in a manner that set her on a new course, pulling in the reins and giving herself permission to put the touring, the writing to deadlines, on the shelf. She made room for her passion as a photographer, explored co-writing, traveled, found herself making music for films, and allowed time for her personal life. By 2016 Cousins was back in the studio, refreshed, armed with a batch of new material, and in the company of producer Joe Henry. The result was Natural Conclusion, of which she has said, “is the most honest and vulnerable thing I have made.” Fast forward, and Natural Conclusion received a Grammy nomination last year and was praised by USA Today, NPR Music and Oprah Magazine.

FAMILY/MUSIC Sunday, September 30 • 3 PM $18 Adults • $15 Children
The first family artist to grace our stage this season happens to be one of the legends of children’s entertainment, Fred Penner.
While one of his signature songs is The Cat Came Back, Fred is, in fact, the cool cat who keeps coming back to entertain multi-generational audiences, some who have been tuned into his music for over four decades. It’s not uncommon to see as many adults as kids pressing toward the stage when Penner walks out from the wings, and he has rested on his back catalogue as he continues to make additions to his house of song. His most recent releases are 2014’s Where In The World and recent Juno-Award winner Hear The Music (2017). What a ride it’s been for Fred, one where we’ve been able to tag along or at least watch from a very close perch. From his long running television series to four Juno Awards, to his being the first children’s entertainer to headline at the Los Angeles Amphitheater, onto the Order of Canada, his work as a spokesman for both World Vision and Unicef, he’s been a very cool committed cat indeed.
“Penner blends sophisticated music, wacky humor and fatherly warmth; his band is polished and eclectic, joining him on everything from ‘simple guitar/banjo folk’ to rock ‘n’ roll and tropical or even what he calls ‘semiclassical’ music.” – Los Angeles Times

Public Art: An Interruption by Paula E. Kirman
Coming across public art while walking down a path or moving through a building,
can bring with it a sense of surprise and discovery. It can interrupt a regular routine with delight and wonder as one stops to examine and contemplate. If art has the ability to interrupt it is the artists who are at the intersection of creating that exchange. Artists encourage us to follow them down unexpected paths as a work unfolds, shifting our expectation of what art can do and how artists are perceived. Public art turns the world into a gallery and can help distinguish a city like St. Albert as a destination. My glad feet shod with a glittering steel, I was the god of the winged heel (1994) by Wanda Cracknell, Joanna Drummond, Lill Eitzen, Franziska Jacobsen, Alice Colett-Switzer and Phil Switzer at Servus Place, is one such interrupting piece. A three-dimensional ceramic mural depicting skating and hockey, and the objects that are associated with the two activities, is striking in its detail and arrangement. As one of the City of St. Albert’s first public art installations, the City approached the Potters Guild recommending that some of their artists submit a proposal. “This was no small undertaking and we didn’t realize at the time of submission that we would be giving almost 365 days of our lives to this fine art install,” says Joanna Drummond. Originally installed at the Campbell Place Arena and later reinstalled at Servus Credit Union Place, Drummond explains that, “We tried to consider all of the sport that would take place in this arena and to configure this in the planning of the piece. The inspiration was hockey, figure skating, public skating, ringette, lacrosse, children, and spectators.” The artwork is a representation of our community and brings an unexpected delight when navigating the hallways of Servus Credit Union Place for your next swim meet, workout or hockey practice.

Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Policy, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging.

CIRCUS/MUSIC/THEATRE Tuesday, October 2 • 7:30 PM $68 Adults • $45 Children
Picture this: America is under construction. The West is booming. The railroad
is being developed. In the middle of the desert, a town comes to life. A saloon opens its doors. A place to gather and share tales, it quickly becomes a theatre for stories of all kinds. In Cirque Éloize’s Saloon, the infectious energy of folk music sets the tone to an acrobatic comedy that sweeps the spectators away in a mad rush. Enigmatic, colourful characters come together and reveal themselves, resulting in a series of unexpected situations, unfolding to the rhythm of acrobatic prowess and original choreographies. Under the spell of the saloon’s beautiful Belle, the lover sets off a chase worthy of the greatest Westerns. The lovebirds on the run wreak havoc everywhere on their path; from the deserted plains to the depth of the mines—until the ultimate acrobatic showdown. Walking through Saloon’s doors means entering a mythical atmosphere created by live music and the exhilarating pace of spectacular performances. Action packed, Saloon is a theatrical feast incorporating a multitude of acrobatic disciplines, show-stopping choreography, and circus arts, all accompanied by a full musical soundscape. Watch as a dozen performers take audiences on a wild ride that inspire reactions ranging from the collective audience gasp that follows a spectacular physical feat, to waves of laughter responding to the ridiculous antics of this multi-talented cast.

Skerryvore comes to The Arden Theatre fresh off a series of summer dates that act as a reminder that this young, vital and explosive Scottish band is one of the most sought after and respected roots music ensembles of our time. Despite having recently played internationally renowned venues and events like Brooklyn Bowl in NYC, The City Winery in Boston, The Philadelphia Folk Festival and Denmark’s prestigious Tønder Festival, Skerryvore has spent little time in Canada and this date at The Arden Theatre is the only Canadian date on this extensive tour, making it all the more special. Over the 14-year journey of the band, hardcore Celtic roots have expanded significantly with Cajun, rock, country and jazz influences being brilliantly fused with, and injected into, the musical foundation of the band. This tour finds Skerryvore presenting material from the just released EVO album which has received rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
is instantly engaging. Opening at full throttle with a big emphatic sound “ofEVO thundering drums and pipes, as rich as a Scottish single malt; it lays down
the gauntlet for this captivating album that draws you into another world that is vibrant and emotive in equal measures.
