T

he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

A

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.

The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!

Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, The Botanical Arts City

W

hen I see the final performances in our 2010/2011 Season the word “Glorious” leaps to mind. We have Glorious Dance, Glorious Jazz, and one Glorious Legend. We welcome back icon Margie Gillis for a night of scintillating dance, followed closely by the rapturous grooves of Nova Bhattacharya on our On-Stage Series. Fresh off numerous awards, Emilie-Clarie Barlow will light up her jazzy torch songs for us. And what can you say about the British Song Book with Bettye LaVette – those old British rockers never sounded so good! Thank you again to Brenda Heatherington for curating such a Glorious season, it has been a really fun ride. Casey Prescott Professional Programming Presenter

he connections that fill our lives take on shapes that are as eclectic as they are numerous. THREAD follows an essential plot line, exposing the rope that trips us up, the bonds that tether us, the string that attaches us, the knots we sever, the ribbons that glorify us.

“Exploring the interweaving of the pathways of life, soul, heart, memory and possibility, embracing the mysterious, I create to transform, heal and discover; these threads I also follow.” – Margie Gillis

Nova Bhattacharya’s

cclaimed dance innovator, powerful and humanistic dance works offer insights into the transformative journey of this eloquent performer who has been described in turns as “sly and dreamily contemplative” (Now Magazine), “a contained goddess” (Globe & Mail) and “a mischievous visitor from another world” (Märksiche Allemeine). She began her career as a dancer with the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company. Eager to explore the scope for innovation within the bharatanatyam form, Bhattacharya began choreographing in 1997, her work has been commissioned by Danceworks, Canada Dance Festival, Cahoots Theatre, Dusk Dances and many others. Her ongoing partnership with tabla virtuoso Ed Hanley has produced several outstanding works, as have her commissions from leading choreographers including Peggy Baker and José Navas. In 2008 she established Ipsita Nova Dance Projects. The company’s productions have been presented across Canada and in Germany and Japan.

ED HANLEY’S

interests in all aspects of Indian classical rhythm have led him to study outside of the Hindustani tabla tradition focusing on Karnatic vocal percussion and drumming traditions. Ed has performed across Canada, the USA, Europe and India in a variety of world, jazz and classical settings with artists and ensembles including Autorickshaw and The Toronto Tabla Ensemble. Ed has co-produced three Autorickshaw albums with Suba Sankaran, including the critically acclaimed, JUNO nominated CDs, Four Higher and So The Journey Goes.

EMILIE-CLAIRE BARLOW C

harmed by her energetic, confident performances, 2011 Juno nominated Emilie-Claire Barlow continues to endear herself to critics, peers and audiences everywhere. With a pitch-perfect voice of unforgettable beauty, this Canadian jazz-jewel glides over melodies and original tunes with a charisma that is romantic, timeless, playful and lush. Emilie-Claire follows the “do-it-yourself” model in every area of her career. Not only is she self managed, but she also writes all the charts, and produces her own albums under her very own label. With a string of hits, critical acclaim and a certain je ne sais quoi, Barlow maintains her youthful sweetness while maturing into a polished jazz force with six albums in her repertoire. On top of a thriving jazz career, Emilie-Claire is also a busy studio singer and voice actor. She can be heard on numerous commercials and is a featured voice on several teen animated television series. Emilie has enjoyed several weeks as the #1 Jazz Album on iTunes Canada and her performances have been featured in movies and television series. The Beat Goes On is the eighth album in a recording career that now spans 12 years, and it is a record of which she is justifiably proud.

“This recording is a direct reflection of where I am in my life, personally and musically. What people see and hear is really me.” – Emilie-Claire Barlow

BETTYE LAVETTE A

n extraordinary performing powerhouse, Bettye LaVette inhabits, revitalizes and exposes the humanity that makes her tracks not just songs, but enduring works of art. Rolling Stone magazine describes her as “someone who this very minute could unleash a performance that would make your hair stand on end.” Blessed with volcanic vocal talents, LaVette’s voice commands absolute respect as it conjures devastatingly raw, emotional truths in performances that are more revelations than stage show. Unfortunately, it says much about the vagaries of the popular music industry that, although LaVette has been recording for over four decades, up to this point she has remained criminally unknown. Bettye has performed a power-packed show around the world and one can readily tell that she is a special and immensely talented performer. Touring with her latest album, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, this Grammy-nominated songstress will take Arden audiences through her version of the British Invasion with music from bands like The Beatles, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd – many of whom count themselves as fans of this great lady of soul.

“What a voice, and what a soul to compliment such a talent. I believe every word, as does everyone that has had the pleasure of hearing Bettye LaVette sing. She’s inspired a lot of great music. You can hear clearly that her influence is all over the new music today.” – Joss Stone
