he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.
The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!
Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

inally, the wait is over, for me, and most importantly for you. Ever since accepting this position I have been in a state of anticipation for the curtain to go up on another fantastic season of Arden performances. The start of our wonderful journey will be with Danny Michel who has been on many trips of artistic discovery and will share with us the spoils of his most recent musical safari. Welcoming Danny to our stage to launch the season will be a real treat and I can’t wait to relish in his stories, songs, and laughter. And there is only one artist who could follow Danny’s mirth and rythm, and that is the calm and stylish musings of master bluesman Robert Cray. If you have a ticket, consider yourself one of the lucky ones, as they flew out of our box office when they went on sale. It will be a true priviledge to have Robert and his band stir and shake their special blend of blues on our stage......and this is only the beginning! With innovation, charm and insight, Danny Michel creates music that moves effortlessly between topics that challenge your thinking, make your heart soar and everywhere in between. His unique perspective and ability to engage the listener has come from years of creating music, touring around the world and collaborating with different artists and producers. Emerging in the 90’s as a member of the Canadian pop group Starling, Michel began to record solo material on the side until critical acclaim for an independent release in 2000 gave him the courage to continue his career as a solo artist. Known for his honest lyrics, unpredictable live performances and witty stage banter, Michel has won legions of devoted fans and continues to draw praise from critics and fellow musicians around the world. On his most recent release, Sunset Sea, Michel takes his inspiration from his travels and the tropical beauty of Belize, where much of the CD was recorded. Whether he’s producing, writing music for television and film, touring or recording, Danny Michel is a consummate musician ready to go where the music takes him.

THE ROBERT CRAY BAND
Robert Cray is a true blues legend known for electrifying live performances and an internationally admired and recognizable signature sound. In a career that has surpassed 35 years and has garnered numerous accolades and awards, Cray has never rested on his laurels; he continues to push himself by exploring new musical territories and collaborations with other artists. His trademark fusion of Blues and Memphis-style R&B combined with his soulful voice, thought-provoking lyrics and understated guitar pays homage to Blues pioneers. His reverence to the past combined with his ability to discover new musical arrangements and combinations allow Cray to evolve his sound in exciting ways. His abilities have earned him respect from veteran and emerging artists who continually source Cray as an inspiration. In a time where musicians come and go in relative speed, it’s comforting to know that after all these years Cray isn’t about to slow down any time soon. In fact Cray is in the midst of a creative renewal, creating his own music label, releasing live and studio albums and performing sold out shows around the world.
“I’ve got the blues for life…I play the music I want, with people I want, to fans that want to hear it. If you ask me, that’s not a bad gig” – Robert Cray
