he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
A
s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.
The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!
Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, The Botanical Arts City
I
love a show with a great artist and a great story, and these artists each bring different tales and exciting music. It is always a privilege to welcome back a home-grown artist like Carolyn Dawn Johnson who is giving this Country so much international buzz. The gentle chords and stories from Barney Bentall and his all-star supporting cast of minstrels is certainly a concert not to be missed. And we round out our fall with Arden favourite, Linda Tillery and her high octane choir, who will deliver some much needed musical warmth from the California coast. I promise they will raise the roof with their harmonies and bring a happy end to our October. Casey Prescott Professional Programming Presenter

ew songwriters have the ability to capture a moment or feeling like Alberta’s own Carolyn Dawn Johnson (CDJ). Conveying a spectrum of emotion from earnest hopefulness to exhilarating energy, CDJ’s music has always made an impactful connection with music industry peers and an ever growing legion of faithful fans. Beginning her career in the late 1990’s, CDJ made the bold decision to move from Canada to Nashville where her song-writing talents soon caught the ears of producers and musicians. Following the success of her co-written Number One hit, Single White Female, recorded by Chely Wright in 1999, CDJ started working on what would become her critically acclaimed first solo album, Room With a View. In the past 10 years, CDJ has accomplished more than most do in their whole career: writing, recording and producing four albums, tirelessly touring, mentoring younger musicians and collecting awards and accolades. But perhaps what she is most proud of is her ability to balance her personal and professional life. After taking a four-year hiatus to start a family, CDJ is back with her 2010 release, Love Rules. Joining Carolyn Dawn Johnson on this tour is Chad Brownlee. For more information on Chad, please visit www.chadbrownlee.com.

Barney Bentall & The Grand Cariboo Opry J
oining generations of some of Canada’s finest up and coming musicians, Barney Bentall has revived the classic variety show experience with his Grand Cariboo Opry. A dynamic evening of songs, storytelling and laughter reminiscent of Prairie Home Companion or Vinyl Café type radio programming, Juno award-winning Barney Bentall leads a cast of everchanging musicians on a journey through western, country and roots music. In a career changing moment in the mid 90’s, Bentall stepped away from (but not out of!) the spotlight to buy a cattle ranch. Now this music veteran plays only 20 to 30 concerts a year, with his music reflecting a more stripped down acoustic format. Hosting friends and family at his ranch for regular jam sessions sparked new inspiration and direction for Bentall’s musical path. “The Grand Cariboo Opry took a while to develop and incubate,” says Bentall who, by his own admission, doubted the Opry idea would ever work off the ranch. After the Opry’s first few concerts, Bentall was pleasantly surprised to discover that “…low and behold what had seemed so chaotic and corny…has become one of my favourite things.” This unforgettable performance at The Arden includes special guests Dustin Bentall (Barney’s son), Ridley Bent, Kendal Carson, Wendy Bird, Matt Masters and Eric Reed.

Linda Tillery & The Cultural Heritage Choir With rich harmonies, a joyful spirit and a deep soul, Linda Tillery & The Cultural Heritage Choir are a percussion driven ensemble with a repertoire that taps into every element of African-American music from roots and blues to jazz and Motown. Linda Tillery has long been hailed as one of the most versatile singers in the US. In 1992, after a successful career as a singer and a stint as a session drummer, Tillery was inspired to chart a new course. “I needed a change,” she said. “Female singers just kept getting younger, kept getting thinner and hemlines kept getting shorter. It was time for me to become a spectator of pop music and find a different direction for participation.” This new direction came when Tillery discovered field recordings of traditional African music that left her powerfully moved and reconnected with her roots. From there it was a natural step to form the Cultural Heritage Choir. The individual members, Rhonda Benin, Elouise Burrell, Bryan Dyer and Simon Monserrat, come from extensive performing backgrounds, each with a slightly different timbre and vocal style. The Choir’s vocal diversity and powerful blending of harmonies, coupled with a driving passion allow them to captivate audiences with their unique blend of spirituals, work and play songs, field hollers and other traditional African-American tunes.

Before our designers could revolutionize what we design, they had to revolutionize how we design. The result – a stunning sedan that is as powerful and fluid as the sculpture that inspired it.
