T

he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

A

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.

The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!

Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, The Botanical Arts City

theatre for a child is a passport to worlds far and near, new languages, characters, music and, most importantly, laughter and wonder. Our family series this season draws on the talents of some of the world’s great performers, from a toe tapping sing along with none other than Linda Tillery, Circa’s awesome feats of circus mayhem, to the tranquil world of Leo Lionni created by the puppeteers at Mermaid Theatre, and finishing with a trip to Camelot courtesy of our friends at Axis Theatre who will give us a lovable culinary spin on the King Arthur tale. I hope you will pencil in all of these dates and join us for another season of surprises and smiles. Casey Prescott Professional Programming Presenter

inda Tillery and The Cultural Heritage Choir have dedicated themselves to the spirit, tradition and sounds of African-American music. In this live concert experience, the choir transforms children’s play songs and rhymes into a fun dance party that’s perfect for parents and children alike. Receiving a Parent’s Choice Award in 2000 for their CD Hippity Hop, Linda Tillery & The Cultural Heritage Choir prove they know how to make music with little ones in mind. Combining fun, danceable songs with traditional African rhythms, the choir will have you moving and grooving to classic Motown favourites and funky new versions of old nursery rhymes. Learning about new cultures has never been so fun!

“What makes our concerts fun for kids is that they can really get involved in the music. We teach them rhythms, get them singing, clapping and dancing so it feels more like a party than a concert.” – Linda Tillery

Wherever Circa takes its fun-filled, heart-stopping show, curiosity is

piqued and audiences flock to see the impossible happen. 46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes is a unique version of the traditional trapeze circus show. With upbeat music and an oversized countdown clock, Circa’s newest show spotlights a cast of amazing performers as they bend, fly, juggle and balance their way through 45 minutes of high-energy fun. This new kind of circus will keep even the most skeptical mesmerized. Circa’s artistic director, Yaron Lifshitz, explains that each member is invested in giving everyone a circus experience they won’t soon forget: “We have a committed ensemble of multi-skilled performers working year round to explore and extend the limits of what circus can do. We are committed to producing a show that is unique.”

Circa acknowledges the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

INSPIRING DESIGNS DON’T ALWAYS BEGIN ON PAPER.

Before our designers could revolutionize what we design, they had to revolutionize how we design. The result – a stunning sedan that is as powerful and fluid as the sculpture that inspired it. Pronounced precision lines cut down the hood and embrace the road. Enlarged wheel arches further enhance the aggressively wide stance. A dramatic side contour line integrates seamlessly with each door handle. And a large, upright kidney grille breathes life into a 400hp V8 engine. The new BMW 5 Series: an Exploration of Beauty. cclaimed author Leo Lionni is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished and innovative artists and writers of the 20th century. His classic tales of Swimmy, Inch by Inch and Frederick are brought to life by Nova Scotia’s Mermaid Theatre, an internationally renowned company known for its gentle story-telling, original musical scores, vivid design and imaginative lighting elements. The trio of fables begin with Swimmy, a tiny fish with a big heart in the vast ocean who must use ingenuity to fend off danger. Then we meet Frederick, a poetic little field mouse that makes everyday life an artful experience. Finally we have Inch by Inch, the story of a lovable little inchworm who can measure everything from a flamingo’s neck to a nightingale’s song. “Part of our mission is to promote the joy of reading,” says Mermaid Theatre artistic director, Jim Morrow.“ And Lionni was a genius. He created all of these wonderful characters that resonate with children.”

Welcome to the basement of Camelot where the hard-working kitchen crew

is busy preparing a birthday feast for King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Nerves and excitement are in the air as the cook, his helper and the maid zip around the kitchen in a flurry of activity. To set his crew at ease, the cook entertains his staff with the heroic tales of their beloved king. The trio get so carried away they begin singing, dancing and re-enacting medieval battles using baguette as swords, aprons as capes and mop buckets as helmets. Before they know it, it’s time for cake! With audience interaction, great physical action and comedy for all ages, Axis Theatre Company’s production of King Arthur’s Kitchen is not only an entertaining history lesson, but also a tale about following your dreams. Axis Theatre is recognized as a cultural institution that travels the world sharing its unique repertoire of plays for all ages.
