T

he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

A

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.

The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!

Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, The Botanical Arts City

T

he Arden’s season seems to me like a great book. This chapter is one that I could read over and over again. It has many good friends and a local artist that is on the rise. Lunch at Allen’s almost needs no introduction, as we all have a special place in our hearts for these four remarkable artists. Our elegant on-stage series launches with passion and flair as famed Quartetto Gelato member, Alexander Sevastian, opens the door on his virtuosic talent. I cannot wait to welcome local legend Kat Danser to our stage as she launches a new CD of songs that will transport us to the dusty porches, creaky chairs and friendly mists of the Bayou. And what better way to round it all out than with a night of high-strumming energy from six guitar heroes, rollicking and rolling a host of familiar songs in a way that you have never heard them before. Lunch At Allen’s From their classic solo Canadian and international hits to new music from their recently released More Lunch at Allen’s, this group performs with a collaborative creativity that makes their live performances an intimate and joyous experience for all.

Murray McLachlan From his humble beginnings as a street performer to a recipient of the Order of Canada, McLachlan is a true Canadian Icon. Singer-songwriter, CBC radio broadcaster, actor and activist are just a few roles he has played in his remarkable 40 plus year career. Cindy Church A stellar presence in the Canadian music scene, Church has crafted a body of work that is at once artistically successful and culturally significant, sought after by fellow performers and treasured by listeners. Marc Jordan Marc Jordan’s voice and songs take listeners to a place that the heart understands before the intellect can comment. With a song writing resume that reads like a list of who’s who in music it might be surprising to know Jordan considers himself primarily a singer rather than a songwriter: “Every song I write I do with the intention of recording it. That’s what keeps song writing truthful to me.” Ian Thomas Ian Thomas was destined to perform. By the age of six he was playing the piano, soon after he mastered the guitar and by his teens he had arranged music for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Thomas’ song writing has become the soundtrack to a generation thanks to his rare combination of musicality, lyricism, intelligence and directness.

Kat Danser

D

rawing a direct line from the wheat fields of Saskatchewan to the cotton fields of the Mississippi, Kat Danser’s latest CD, Passin’-A-Time, chronicles her two year journey studying the traditions of the Delta Blues. What began as a simple curiosity about those who influenced and intrigued her, like Bessie Smith, RL Burnside and Memphis Minnie McCoy, turned into a a project that changed her life. “I lived in Mississippi and was deeply moved by the geographical area of North Mississippi,” says Danser. “Upon returning to Canada, I presented my experiences at the Canadian Center for Ethnomusicology located at the University of Alberta. I envied the language they used in speaking with me about my experiences. We continued our conversations and I decided to blend my passion for music with my passion for social activism. The result…a new career path…Ethnomusicology.” Rich in tradition, the songs on this CD represent this unique musical journey along the rivers and rails and showcase Danser’s thought-provoking lyrics and soulful vocal expressions that have endeared her to an ever-growing legion of fans. Danser will be joined on stage by Don Benedictson, Christian and Sarah Dugas and John Ellis, the Winnipeg musicians featured on Passin’-A-Time.

Alexander Sevastian

Quartetto Gelato’s Alexander Sevastian is known for his impeccable arrangements, unique repertoire and virtuoso skills that take audiences on a musical adventure. His technical brilliance paired with his on stage charm and wit has won him a following beyond that of the traditional accordion enthusiast. Sevastian began his professional career in Moscow in 1996, performing with the Russian Radio Orchestra touring as a soloist throughout Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, and Japan. After establishing himself as a recitalist and chamber musician, Sevastian and his family moved to Canada in 2001. In 2002, he joined Quartetto Gelato and toured extensively around the world. Sevastian is the three-time first prize winner of the International Accordion Competition, has won Norway’s Oslofjord Accordion Competition, The Cup of the North in Russia and the Anthony Galla-Rini Accordion Competition in the US to name a few. Whether performing solo, part of a group or as a member of an orchestra, there is no denying the sheer talent of Alexander Sevastian. Arden audience will be dazzled with his repertoire of classical, jazz and traditional world music standards in the intimate setting of the On Stage Series.

INSPIRING DESIGNS DON’T ALWAYS BEGIN ON PAPER.

Before our designers could revolutionize what we design, they had to revolutionize how we design. The result – a stunning sedan that is as powerful and fluid as the sculpture that inspired it. Pronounced precision lines cut down the hood and embrace the road. Enlarged wheel arches further enhance the aggressively wide stance. A dramatic side contour line integrates seamlessly with each door handle. And a large, upright kidney grille breathes life into a 400hp V8 engine. The new BMW 5 Series: an Exploration of Beauty.
