T

he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

A

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.

The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

W

elcome to the Arden Theatre!

Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, The Botanical Arts City

I

t is always tricky to strike a balance between Christmas and January. They are usually a study in contrasts. One is uplifting and colourful, and the other is generally flat, cold and pale. For December we will have a star to put on top of the Christmas tree in PJ Perry, who along with his band will challenge for top seasonal show. And then we move into the mid-winter, where we have found some gypsies, a protégé, and a singer-poet to bring us back to our happy place. Quartango will make you dance, Evgeny will make you spin, and Loudon Wainwright will make you think. Come plug into the Arden season, it may just save your winter. Jazzy Christmas with PJ Perry and Bill Mays P

J Perry is most definitely not getting a piece of coal in his stocking this Christmas! He is one of this country’s most beloved performers and when he hits the stage in his home province, audiences tend to run to the box office to get their tickets. His quintessential artistry and style have kept him at the forefront of the Jazz scene and he is respected around the globe for his elegance and seamless improvisation. He has many awards to his credit, and a list of past collaborators that would make any music lover salivate. The Arden is thrilled that he will be bringing his own recipe for Stuffy Turkey to The Arden stage to help us all ring in the season with clever and unique interpretations of Ye Olde (and not-so-old) songs of Christmas. Perry will be joined by veteran pianist, composer and arranger Bill Mays, who brings a Santa’s sack of pleasing infusions of styles near and far. Rounding out our holiday quartet are bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke. This show promises to be the biggest and brightest candy cane hanging from the tree.

“PJ Perry blew hot, he blew cool, and he blew the audience away.” – The Daily News

QUARTANGO Experiencing a performance by Quartango is like sitting on a terrace on the Mediterranean, sampling tapas of spicy marinated olives, lemon rind and fresh crusty bread. This is a show that’s all about flavour – and this group has lots of it. With a swagger, a skip, and a tap exuding a special chemistry and artistry, it’s no wonder Quartango is known the world over for bringing down the house. Made up of Stéphane Aubin, piano, Denis Plante, bandoneon, René Gosselin, double bass, and Antoine Bareil, violin, Quartango is a group of committed and accomplished musicians. Together they weave an unforgettable night of humour and rhythm that breathes new life into the Tango and keeps the audience begging for more. For this visit to The Arden, Quartango will be cooking up a great menu of jigs and waltzes tossed with a bit of jazz and a little opera. We invite you to join us for a welcome reprieve from the January blahs with a night of heated musical passion. No dance lessons provided, but capes, tiaras and devious looks are always welcome.

“The Montreal group heated things up with a concert that was nothing short of brilliant. It was dramatic. It was elegant. It was everything tango music should be.” – Regina Leader-Post

EVGENY STARODUBTSEV 2009 HONENS LAUREATE T

he grand piano is the lion of the jungle; it is feared and respected, and only a true master can tame it. Evgeny Starodubtsev is a rare breed of young lion tamer who brings his own unique carnival of virtuosity to the intimate On-Stage Series. A laureate from the prestigious Honens Competition, Evgeny will roar into a delectable selection from the master composers in a whip-cracking 60-minute recital that will keep your eyes and ears dazzled. Starodubtsev was first spotted by a lonely accordion who taught him to swing and hunt in the trees, and from that moment he found his passion. He then met the piano who would be his master, honing his skills and respect for music, especially of fellow jungle creatures Chopin and Szymanowski. Starodubtsev is also curious and open to collaborations that push him beyond the boundaries of the woods. If you sneak up on his lair, don’t be surprised to find other musicians, even other pianists, and sometimes ballet dancers hanging around…just waiting for a scrap to fall from his table. Speaking of food…this On-Stage performance will feature a tasty catered lunch, poetic musings from our friends at Poets Ink and a stage decorated with paintings from Profiles Gallery’s permanent collection. We believe that this concert will be a delightful funhouse of chills and thrills.

The Ultimate Driving Experience.®

INSPIRING DESIGNS DON’T ALWAYS BEGIN ON PAPER.

Before our designers could revolutionize what we design, they had to revolutionize how we design. The result – a stunning sedan that is as powerful and fluid as the sculpture that inspired it. Pronounced precision lines cut down the hood and embrace the road. Enlarged wheel arches further enhance the aggressively wide stance. A dramatic side contour line integrates seamlessly with each door handle. And a large, upright kidney grille breathes life into a 400hp V8 engine. The new BMW 5 Series: an Exploration of Beauty. LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III Give me your hand for the parting touch Fare thee well and thanks a lot I know that we promised we would keep in touch But you and I know that we both forgot Loudon Wainwright – Come A Long Way L

oudon Wainwright III counts Elvis, Liza Minelli, and Bob Dylan as seminal characters in his life’s play. He walks a long and winding road, having spent time as a movie house janitor, boat yard barnacle scraper, cashier, cook, dishwasher, Oklahoma jailbird, private school student and psychiatric patient… and not necessarily in that order. He has loved, he has lost, he has been defiant, he has laughed at it all and, most importantly, he has survived. Continuing his journey as one of this generation’s most important poet, singersongwriters, Wainwright is known as one of the grand observers of life. His songs ooze authenticity and relevance. This evening promises to be a poignant night of melody and verse from one of the great masters of song.
