T
he Arden Theatre contributes greatly to Alberta’s artistic scene by assisting local, national and international artists to present high-quality performances, and promoting the growth of arts and culture to the great pleasure of audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Our Government knows how important diverse cultural experiences are to the quality of life of Canadians and to the vitality of our communities. This is why we are proud to support the theatre in achieving its mission. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all those involved in developing the 2010-2011 program. Best wishes for a successful season!
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
A
s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2010-11 Arden Theatre season. Alberta is a great place to live, work and raise a family, in large part because we Albertans take our quality of life seriously. We dedicate ourselves to arts and culture as the touchstones of the best things in life. We consider our cultural spaces the hearts of our communities. For over a quarter of a century the Arden Theatre has been a cultural heart, not only for St. Albert but for the whole capital region – just one of the reasons the theatre was chosen as a Feature Celebration Site of Alberta Arts Days 2010. Through its musical, dance and theatrical offerings, The Arden offers us a glimpse of the world as it is, and as we might wish it to be. I would like to offer my special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre for bringing the citizens of St. Albert and their visitors another thrilling season of performance by artists from around the world. Your dedication to arts and culture is a source of pride for all Albertans.
The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

elcome to the Arden Theatre!
Our 27th season offers world-class entertainment in theatre, dance and a variety of musical genres. We are pleased to welcome back Canadian icons Lunch At Allen’s, multiGrammy award winner Robert Cray, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III. We are also proud to present emerging artists including Danny Michel (performing at our season launch), the Cajun group Red Stick Ramblers and local blues singer Kat Danser. The Arden reflects St. Albert’s devotion to cultivating the arts and our commitment to community. The Arden is home to numerous school presentations, concerts and awards nights, as well as annual festivals, dance competitions and music recitals. Whether you are in the audience for the Professional Series, On Stage Series or Family Series, you’ll no doubt experience the same magic that draws audiences back year after year to this special theatre. I invite you to join us for a memorable season of music, laughter, tears and, of course, applause.

N
ow that January is coming to a close, we start to see the faint flicker of warmer times ahead. Hope is on the horizon and The Arden is lighting the way with an irresistible band of circus junkies from the land of Oz, a delightful and surprising voyeuristic trip through Brooke Johnson’s friendship with Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a Cajun kitchen party with the Red Stick Ramblers, and a lyrical evening of ballads with Justin Hines. Spring is getting ready to call, but first let’s have a little more mid-winter fun. Casey Prescott Professional Programming Presenter

TRUDEAU STORIES Pierre Elliot Trudeau is a man that elicits a strong opinion, memory, or emotion. There have been many documentaries. One famous eulogy. But is there more to his story? Enter Brooke Johnson, writer and actress of a one-woman show that transports the audience to 1985, Montreal. She was a student. He was no longer Prime Minister. A crossing of paths. An unexpected friendship. Delve into a personal night of reminiscences, journal entries, and correspondence between two unlikely friends. A story that takes us beyond the headlines, painting a never before seen portrait of Trudeau in the Autumn of his life. No Speeches. No Pirouettes. But definitely a few surprises....as one would expect from the man himself.
“...[an] unexpectedly engaging memoir...like turning the pages of a live snapshot album...a maximum of craft but a minimum of artifice...it’s delightful.” – Robert Cushman, National Post

red stick ramblers Picture yourself out in Cajun country for an authentic bush concert. While the band warms up, the BBQ starts to flare, the seafood starts to sizzle, the gumbo gets a bubbling, and the gators are in the fry pit. And as you sit yourself down to feast, you suddenly hear the sounds of hollering, fiddles, guitars, and drums cutting through the Louisiana night air. The Red Stick Ramblers hit the stage and suck you into their Bayou organ grinder, strapping you into a night time train ride through the lively corners of this rich culture. We’ll save a spot at the picnic table for you... but I would get there early as the gator nuggets go fast.
“Lafayette, La.’s Red Stick Ramblers drew a raucous response — and literally sparked dancing in the aisles. The Ramblers cycled easily from western swing to old-time country to Cajun stomps only adding to the joyous vibe.” – Patrick Forester, Washington Post

ustin Hines is one of the fresh new faces of Canadian contemporary Country music. His parents say that he was born with a twinkle in his eye and a song in his heart. And after spending many nights as a child listening to the likes of James Taylor, Willie Nelson, Cat Stevens, and Harry Chapin, he now finds himself sharing the Billboard spotlight with some of the best in the biz. Now with the release of his third album, Justin Hines continues to break boundaries and write his own rules, in a career that has no ceiling. His voice is silk and the chords of his songs melt hearts and open minds. Join Justin for a special night of inspirational music making.
“Forget his illness. It’s not a drawback. Justin Hines is all about talent. His voice is interesting, resonant and beautiful. His lyrics are tender and at times heartbreaking. ... Lets hope he gets the recognition he so richly deserves.” – People Magazine
