Calgary Opera is happy to be celebrating the life and work of the great composer Giuseppe Verdi for his 200th anniversary. What better way to begin 2013 than with his Shakespearean comedy, as well as his last opera, Falstaff. Librettist Arrigo Boito began working on Falstaff shortly after the triumph of Otello. It premiered to high acclaim six years later, becoming Verdi’s only successful comedy. Based on The Merry Wives of Windsor, Falstaff is hailed to this day as being one of Verdi’s highest musical achievements, comparable only to Otello in its complexity and maturity. For this great work, we welcome back Gaétan Laperrière for his farewell performance. We are honoured that Gaétan chose to conclude his career with us, after seven productions over 19 years with Calgary Opera. It is also very interesting that Verdi’s last opera was Gaétan’s first. Falstaff inspired his love for the art form and because of that, has a special place in this consummate singer’s heart. I am also happy to be welcoming back many of our favourite singers who make up an unbelievably acclaimed Canadian cast. Laura Whalen, James Westman, John Tessier, Lynne McMurtry, Norine Burgess, and Michel Corbeil will animate this lively comedy, and all of whom we are thrilled to have back on our stage. We’re also excited to welcome back three alumni of our Emerging Artist Development Program, making this a multigenerational opera cast. Eve-Lyn de la Haye, who was last with us for Ariadne auf Naxos, performs the role of Nannetta. Vasil Garvanliev, who comes to us after having performed Leporello in Opera Atelier’s Don Giovanni, performs the role of Pistola and finally Christopher Mayell returns to us to sing the role of Dr. Caius after having performed the title role in Albert Herring with the Aldeburgh Festival in England. I welcome you to sit back and enjoy Verdi’s singular comedic triumph, Falstaff. General Director and CEO, W.R. (Bob) McPhee

Welcome to the New Year with a masterpiece from the great composer Giuseppe Verdi. We launched our season with Verdi’s second last opera, the dark tragedy Otello, and now we move on to Verdi’s final opera, his comic triumph, Falstaff. I’d like to start by thanking everyone who joined us for Otello and brought such a fantastic energy to the Jubilee Auditorium. We had the honour of hosting His Excellency, Andrea Meloni, the Italian Ambassador to Canada, as well as the American Consul, Mexican Consul, and our own Mayor Nenshi. At both intermission and post show the admiration expressed for the cast was overwelming. It says a lot that Calgary Opera can attract such a high level of talent, and beautifully stage such a difficult work. Our amazing cast of singers not only performed some of the most challenging music in the repertoire, but ran the emotional gamut demanded of a Shakespearean story. How could we help but be carried away? We could not put these grand operas on the stage without the generous support of our community. I want to specially thank the Pyke Family and F.R. (Dick) Matthews for their outstanding contributions. Donations from these individuals as well as the members of our Impresario Circle help us keep the artistic quality high both on our main stage and in our many education and outreach programs.

Community outreach is an important part of what we do, and through our Emerging Artist ensemble we have the opportunity to participate in events such as the Big Rock Lecture Series and the Heavens Fitness Anniversary celebrations. Soon the Emerging Artists will be preparing an opera for young people, which they will take on tour for four weeks to schools in Calgary and beyond – as far north as Fort McMurray thanks to our Community Outreach sponsor Cenovus Energy. The Emerging Artists are supported not only by the Canada Arts Training Fund through the Department of Canadian Heritage, but also through sponsorships from Enbridge and RBC, and from individual Adopt-An-Artist donors. And, of course, we can’t say thank you enough to our other major corporate supporters – our overall Education Sponsor Talisman Energy, and our Viva Verdi Season Sponsor Husky Energy. Thank you and Bravo! Chair, Marilyn Milavsky

Gaétan Laperrière For Falstaff, Gaétan Laperrière is undertaking his farewell performance after a 32 year career as a singer, during which time he performed seven times on Calgary Opera’s stage. Of those, many Calgary Opera goers will likely remember him in his most recent roles as Picariello from Filumena, and Amonasro from Aida. His international career has taken him to such great opera companies as Opéra de Paris Bastille, Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Marseille, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and Teatro La Fenice, to name a few. Despite this, he has decided to gracefully bow out by honouring Calgary with his final performance of Falstaff.

Photos, left to right:

“I decided that Falstaff was going to be my last opera because it was the first opera I saw with my Uncle Robert Savoie, my teacher, singing Ford with Louis Quilico as Falstaff,” says Laperrière. “I am Falstaff, I have lived Verdi, that was his last opera, and I will make closure on my 32 year career having fun on stage, as Verdi would have wanted it.”

Laperrière adds, “I know it will be great; it will be fun, because I know my co-performers and they are all great performers. I will give them a lot, as much also to the audience, and this will be a great farewell to a great public.”

program notes Setting the Stage Despite his years in the spotlight, delighting audiences with hit opera after hit opera, and becoming a symbol of Italian nationalist movement, Verdi preferred to see himself as a humble man of the land. He could have lived in luxury in Paris or Venice, but instead he chose to spend his later years on a picturesque farm in the Italian countryside. So in love was he with his rural home, that he said while composing his last opera that he thought it should be performed in Sant’ Agata, the village in which his country home was located, rather than La Scala in Milan. Two and a half years after Otello’s great opening success, Verdi emerged from retirement when Arrigo Boito delivered him an amazing gift, another Shakespeare libretto, but this time a comedy! Of the two operas on which Verdi collaborated with librettist Boito, Falstaff would be his last, as well as his only successful comedy. Boito is quoted as saying, “After the tragedy of Otello, to finish with a mighty burst of laughter, that is to astonish the world!” As the culmination of his composing career, Falstaff is truly an amazing work. Lively and funny, audiences adored it. Within its bars, it even references an earlier opera in the line “Provera donna!” uttered by Mistress Quickly, the innkeeper. This same line, sung to nearly identical music, was performed in La Traviata 40 years earlier, showing that in his own way, the old composer never lost his sense of humour.

Appreciating the Music For an operatic conductor whose interest lies primarily in 19th century Italian opera, an invitation to conduct Verdi’s Falstaff must be eagerly received as it represents the pinnacle of operatic writing in Italy and the culmination of Verdi’s lifelong dedication to the art form. From his first opera performed when he was 27 to this last written at the age of 78, this body of work represents a glorious unbroken line of development. In Falstaff not only do we have him writing a genuine comedy (in fact only his second) but the mastery with which he writes is nothing short of miraculous. The verbal element of the drama has become all important thanks to Boito’s deft handling of the libretto (one senses here a genuine and painstaking collaboration) and the composer clothes this genuinely funny story with music that shows a dazzling array of rhythmic invention, exquisite and subtle orchestration and a profligacy of melody which although far from obvious on a first hearing becomes ever more manifest the more familiar the piece becomes. It is almost as though Verdi wants to assault the listener with his musical prowess as the wealth of ideas tumble over themselves, giving the impression that the old man had to get the notes on the page before his time ran out and surely it is no accident that the final concerted number is a fugue – admittedly one of the least academic imaginable but in which he proves at the end of his life that he knew how to write counterpoint as well as any other composer, thumbing his nose perhaps at Wagner.

The problems the conductor faces in executing this masterwork are numerous and daunting. Quite apart from the desire to make all of Verdi’s detailed markings and instructions apparent, there is the precise pacing of six concise scenes which is, of course worked out with the singers and the director in the rehearsal room. There is the intricacy of the ensemble writing where one wants the audience to hear every complex and often expressive strand that is on the page. Having hopefully achieved that, there is the largest element to bring into this mix, the orchestra. As in Falstaff’s predecessor, Otello, Verdi’s orchestra has become no mere background accompaniment but a protagonist in the drama too. The demands he makes on the orchestra not only reflect the increasing standards of 19th century orchestral playing but require a hitherto unprecedented level of virtuosity from an opera house orchestra. Quite apart from the sheer effort of writing the number of notes contained in the 464 pages of orchestral score (also because the tempo markings are all invariably fast, enhancing the frenetic pace of plot) one cannot but admire the resourcefulness of a composer evidently enjoying himself despite the cost to his writing arm! The opera leaves us with a musical image of the wise, old composer with eyes that have lived through a lifetime of struggle, enigmatically smiling at the human world. Conductor, Robert Dean

The 2013 tour is a reprise of Calgary Opera’s much-loved Hannaraptor by Alan Gilliland and Val Brandt, which had its world premiere in 2008 and was a hit in Alberta schools as well as on Vertigo’s Y-Stage. It is the story of a young girl and her fantastic discovery of a dinosaur fossil in her own badlands backyard. This year’s tour will include the communities of Fort McMurray, Lac La Biche, Bonnyville, Conklin and Anzac among others. ACT I February 2, 6 & 8, 2013

synopsis

Sir John Falstaff, the portly rascal of Windsor, sits in the Garter Inn with his servants Bardolfo and Pistola. When Dr. Caius enters to accuse the three of abusing his home and robbing him, Falstaff dismisses the charges with mock solemnity. He then upbraids his attendants for being unable to pay his bill at the inn. Seeking to better his fortunes, Falstaff plans to woo wealthy matrons Alice Ford and Meg Page. He produces love letters to both, but his henchmen decide that their ethics forbid them to deliver the notes. Falstaff gives them to a page boy instead, lectures his cronies on honour, and chases them from the inn. In her garden, Alice and her daughter, Nannetta, talk to Meg and Mistress Quickly, soon discovering that Falstaff has sent them identical letters. Outraged, they resolve to punish him, but are distracted by the arrival of Ford with Caius, Fenton, Bardolfo and Pistola, who are in the midst of warning him about Falstaff’s designs. Briefly alone, Nannetta and Fenton steal kisses until the women return, plotting to send Quickly to Falstaff to arrange a rendezvous with Alice. Next Nannetta and Fenton are interrupted by Ford, who also plans to visit Falstaff. As the women reappear, all pledge to take the fat nobleman down a peg or two.

ACT II

ACT III

At the inn, Falstaff accepts Bardolfo and Pistola’s feigned penitence for their mutiny. Soon Quickly curtseys in to assure the knight that both Alice and Meg return his ardor. Arranging a meeting with Alice, Falstaff rewards Quickly with a pittance and then, alone, preens himself. The next visitor is Ford, disguised as “Signor Fontana” and pretending to harbour an unrequited passion for Alice. Employed to break down the lady’s virtue, Falstaff boasts that he already has set up a tryst for 2pm, the hour that her husband is always out, and steps away to don his finest courting clothes. Ford, unable to believe his ears, vows revenge.

At sunset outside the inn, Falstaff bemoans his misadventure. His reflections are halted by Quickly, who insists that Alice still loves him and proves it with a note appointing a midnight rendezvous in Windsor Park. Alice, Ford, Meg, Caius and Fenton sneak in as Falstaff enters the inn with Quickly, who tells him the gory tale of the Black Huntsman’s ghost, often seen in Windsor Park at midnight. Alice and the others take up the story, plotting to frighten Falstaff by dressing up as wood sprites.

Intermission (20 minutes) In Ford’s house, Quickly tells Alice and Meg about her visit with the knight at the inn. Nannetta does not share in the fun: her father has promised her to the elderly Dr. Caius. The women reassure her that she will be saved from such a fate. They all hide, except for Alice who sits strumming a lute as her fat suitor arrives. Recalling his salad days as a slender page, he is cut short when Quickly, followed by Meg, announces Ford’s imminent approach. Falstaff leaps behind a screen. While Ford and his men search the house, Falstaff takes refuge amid the dirty linen in a laundry basket. Slipping behind a screen, Nannetta and Fenton attract attention with the sound of their kissing. While Meg and Quickly muffle Falstaff’s cries for air, Ford sneaks up on the screen, expecting his wife and Falstaff and only pauses briefly to berate the lovers before continuing the chase upstairs. Alice orders servants to heave the basket, along with Falstaff, out the window into the muddy ditch below.

In moonlit Windsor Forest, Fenton sings of love and receives a monk’s costume for the masquerade; Nannetta is queen of the fairies, Meg a nymph and Quickly a witch. Everyone takes off as Falstaff lumbers in, dressed as a huntsman and wearing antlers. Scarcely has he greeted Alice than Meg warns of approaching demons. As the knight cowers, Nannetta calls the forest creatures to their revels. They torment Falstaff until he begs for mercy. When the conspirators unmask, Sir John takes it with good humour. Ford betroths Caius to the queen of the fairies (now Bardolfo in disguise) and unwittingly blesses Nannetta and Fenton. Ford too has been duped, but he can forgive as well. Falstaff leads the company in declaring that the world is a folly and all the people in it are but figures of fun.

emerging artists

Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist ensemble had an ambitious schedule leading up to the mid-season break. Resident voice teacher Dawn Johnson, guest vocal coaches Kinza Tyrrell, John Mac Master, Robert Tweten, guest voice teacher Tracy Dahl, as well as Repetiteur Christopher Mokrzewski each worked intensely with the Emerging Artists to perfect their repertoire and improve their technique. The Fall session also included the opportunity for each participant to work with renowned Calgary actor Grant Reddick on spoken text, poetic analysis and acting skills as well as with stage director Glynis Leyshon who guided them through a series of intensive acting sessions tackling scenes from Falstaff, The Rake’s Progress, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Albert Herring. “It was very gratifying to see the Emerging Artists work through the sessions with Glynis,” says Program Coordinator Mel Kirby. “They learned how to be generous on stage while performing a music driven theatre scene, as well as how to give and take, and be aware of everyone else on stage.” Adopt an Artist patrons Andrea Brussa Terence & Judith Dalgleish Diane Hobson Marian Williams

26 CALGARY OPERA 2012-13 SEASON

Voice care is key in ensuring that the vocal ability of each of these young singers is operating at its performance peak. To help the singers develop healthy voice care skills and habits Dr. Joseph Warshawski, a Calgary-based otolaryngologist or voice doctor, is called upon annually to speak on the ins and outs of maintaining vocal health within the daily demands of a professional vocal career. Proper rest, attention to diet and minding the use and avoidance of certain medications (including caffeine!) are all part of the Emerging Artists’ strict regime. Calgary’s altitude and dryness are enduring topics of concern for all involved. Simply put, if you can sing here in Calgary, you can sing anywhere! An initiative undertaken this year will also see each of the Emerging Artists paired up with a medical resident from the Foothills Hospital who will perform a thorough and confidential assessment of their present vocal health, including obtaining a DVD of the functioning of their vocal chords.

Supported by Emerging Artist Development Program Sponsored by

It is hoped that the skills they have learned and practiced thus far will be applied as they take the stage in the second half of the season. Not only will the Emerging Artists be covering roles in Falstaff and La Traviata, they will also be performing their own productions in the school tour of Hannaraptor and the Emerging Artist Showcase performance of Susanna’s Secret/The Spanish Hour. Calgary Opera was also pleased to take part in the Federal government’s announcement of the renewal of funding from Canadian Heritage. The significant funding amount of $250,000 over two years was welcomed by a short performance of the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor, “Chi mi frena in tal momento”.
