This August we invited Calgarians to join us for Opera in the Village, Canada’s first outdoor summer opera festival. Our swashbucklers taught you to fight like a pirate, while the children in our opera camp captured your hearts with their own production of The Pirates of Penzance in the big tent on the banks of the Bow. It was four days to remember, and in every way the response from you was overwhelming, with 97% attendance including patrons from more than 50 communities outside Calgary. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for joining us in celebrating opera outside. We now move inside for our mainstage season starting with a lively Rossini opera that has never been produced in Calgary before. A genius composer at a young age, Rossini wouldn’t have climbed so high so fast had it not been for the support of a generous sponsor. Our company has also been the beneficiary of long-time sponsors and, indeed, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without them either. The support of major
corporate sponsors such as Nexen, Talisman, Imperial Oil Foundation, Cenovus, Enbridge, and Husky Energy are critical to our success. Their ongoing support demonstrates their belief that the arts and culture add strength and vibrancy to the community. Along with our sponsors I would also like to thank the many individuals who include Calgary Opera in their annual giving plans as well as through their dedicated volunteer commitments. And, of course, we are grateful to our government funders – Calgary Arts Development Authority, The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their vital support of our art form. Thank you everyone for joining us this season, and for sharing our love of the grandest art form of them all – opera. Chair, Marilyn Milavsky

This year our season officially began in August with the launch of Opera in the Village – Canada’s first outdoor summer opera festival – and what a way to start the season! It was four days of beautiful weather on the banks of the Bow, performing in a 900-seat open air tent, a completely unique setting for opera in our city. Thank you to everyone who came to join us for a swashbuckling good time. We look forward to next year’s festival. Our mainstage season begins with Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers. This is one of his early operas, composed when he was only 21 years old, but even then, Rossini was developing that joyous bubbly music that we hear in his later works, Cinderella and The Barber of Seville. Part of my excitement in bringing this company premiere to Calgary Opera is in the opportunity to feature Santa Fe Opera’s critically acclaimed set and costumes, which sets the story in the 1930s. Our heroine Isabella is transformed into an ambitious aviator, flying to her lover Lindoro’s rescue with full Amelia Earhart aplomb. There is no one better to play the role of Isabella than Allyson McHardy, who last performed the role of Jo March in Little Women, and no better lyric tenor to share the stage as Lindoro than John Tessier, a familiar face on the Calgary Opera stage. Eduardo Chama also returns, bringing his great talents as a character baritone in the role of the Bey of Algiers, Mustafa. Jessica Strong and Dionne Sellinger, both alumni of the Emerging Artist Development Program, return in the roles of Elvira and Zulma respectively. In fact, each of our mainstage productions this season (including the summer festival) features current and Emerging Artist program alumni – a true testament to the success of the program. To stage direct this Calgary premiere is Michael Cavanagh, back after the highly-acclaimed success of Falstaff last February. Mr. Cavanagh brings humour and energy to the staging of this high-spirited Rossini comedy.
In the New Year, we celebrate Wagner’s 200th anniversary with a rare presentation of The Flying Dutchman, which hasn’t been performed by Calgary Opera in over 20 years. One of Wagner’s most melodic works, The Flying Dutchman is a true grand opera with a larger-than-life story to match the powerful music, making it a favourite among opera lovers. And finally, join us for the exciting new production of Madame Butterfly, designed by Bretta Gerecke who was last with us for the world premiere of The Inventor (2011). Inspired by the esthetics of the time and traditional setting of the story, Madame Butterfly will bring a delicate beauty to the Jubilee stage. Thank you for your continued love and support of opera. 10 CALGARY OPERA 2013-14 SEASON
Festival Founders
As part of Calgary Opera’s first ever outdoor summer opera festival, 24 enthusiastic children ages 9 – 14 participated in an inaugural summer opera camp, which culminated in a mini version of the festival’s mainstage production, The Pirates of Penzance.
focused group of children embraced the challenge and rose to the occasion. Not only did they present a show with high standards and charm, but this opera camp troupe played an integral role in animating the East Village grounds with spontaneous performances and greeting festival-goers.
Complete with guest directors, costumes and props, the children experienced the rewards of hard work combined with the thrill of performing on the big stage to a very appreciative audience. Mixing fun with memorizing the intricacies of Gilbert and Sullivan’s script and lyrics was no easy task, but this much-
Calgary Opera is very pleased with the success of the inaugural camp and proud of its graduates.

program notes Setting the Stage Far too often we think of opera as something other than entertainment. By “we” I mean “you,” of course: the audience, who sometimes treat going to the opera as the artistic equivalent of eating vegetables. You think it’s somehow good for you, that by sitting through an evening at the opera you will be elevated as a human being. Well, you’re absolutely right, of course! But opera can be – and should be – more than that. Or maybe I should say less. It should be just fine to sit in your seat and simply be entertained for an evening, to let the great tunes and the compelling story and the beautiful scenery, costumes and lighting wash over you and distract, divert, and soothe your cares away. Forget vegetables, what’s wrong with a little eye candy, or ear candy, or heart candy once in a while? Our physical production of The Italian Girl in Algiers, designed by Robert Innes Hopkins (with costumes by David C. Woolard) comes originally from the summer opera festival in Santa Fe. It’s fun, creative and lovely to look at, and takes a fanciful, pop-up storybook approach to this flimsiest of tales. To call it flimsy might sound bad, but the story is delightfully so. The plot is a variation of a common storyline by a group of archetypal characters, all with origins in the street theatre of commedia dell’arte. As such it revels in its lack of substance. It’s the kind of whimsical, cartoonish

farce that, after demanding a high suspension of disbelief, rewards the viewer with many cathartic laughs and satisfying romantic moments. The tunes that accompany the silly goings-on are equally delightful. We are in the hands of a master, a musical and theatrical genius. Rossini was never stronger than when dealing with this kind of breezy narrative, and we can relax knowing he will never let us down. The wonderful melodies keep on coming, as do the laughs, as do the lovely stage pictures. As a result, the stresses, cares and trials of our daily lives fade away. Who could possibly find anything wrong with that? Well, sometimes we do. By that I mean the other “we;” my fellow operatic professionals, the ones charged with producing, performing, conducting and, of course, directing the show. Far too often the caretakers of our art form stifle it with too much reverence. For some works, naturally, reverence and deadly serious respect is exactly what’s required. The Italian Girl in Algiers is not one of those operas. It was intended as a campy romp, a divertissement, a vaudeville. We know this to be true from the letters Rossini exchanged with his librettists, his publishers, friends, impresarios, and other contemporaries. Somehow, though, as it’s been passed down through the ages, this piece has accumulated a stuffy reputation, earned by being too often handled with the kind of kid gloves that the original creators would have abhorred.
An opera in modern times makes its way through many hands before it gets to the stage. This show is my interpretation of a beautiful production of a toooften mishandled masterwork of comedy that has seen many versions since its debut many years ago. Here in Calgary it’s been artfully updated, cast to perfection and presented by singers, crew members and musicians of the finest calibre. We are all very serious in not taking ourselves too seriously. We are united by the same lofty yet simple goal; to entertain you. This opera is delightful candy and there’s nothing wrong with that. Enjoy the sugar rush. Stage Director Michael Cavanagh

THE ITALIAN GIRL IN ALGIERS 15
ACT I Our story is set inside a child’s pop-up book, 1930s. In Algiers, at the seaside palace of the Bey Mustafa, his wife Elvira complains that she is no longer loved. Her trusty servant Zulma and her attendants console her but warn there is nothing she can do. Mustafa makes an entrance, boasting that he will never let women get the better of him, and sends Elvira and Zulma away. He tells Haly, his second-in-command, that he has tired of his wife and will give her to Lindoro, his recently captured Italian slave. He orders Haly to provide him with an Italian woman — someone more interesting than the “boring” girls in his harem. Lindoro enters, longing for his sweetheart, Isabella, whom he lost when Mustafa’s corsairs captured him. Mustafa orders him to take Elvira, insisting she possesses every virtue that Lindoro values. Elsewhere along the shore, a wreck is discovered and Haly and the corsairs exult. Isabella arrives in their midst, lamenting the cruelty of a fate that has interrupted her quest for her lost fiancé, Lindoro. Though in danger, she is confident of her skill in taming men. Taddeo, an admirer of Isabella’s, is uncovered in the wreckage and is immediately threatened. Thinking quickly, he claims to be Isabella’s uncle and thus must remain safe by her side. When the Algerians learn that both captives are Italian, they rejoice in having found the new star for Mustafa’s harem. Taddeo is stunned at Isabella’s aplomb on hearing the news. They quarrel, but then decide they will be better off facing their predicament together. Mustafa promises Lindoro that he may return to Italy— if he will take Elvira. Seeing no other option, Lindoro accepts. Elvira, however, loves her husband and sees no advantage in aiding Lindoro’s escape. When Haly announces the capture of an Italian woman, Mustafa gloats in anticipation of his conquest, then leaves to greet her. Lindoro tries to tell Elvira she has no choice but to leave her heartless husband.
16 CALGARY OPERA 2013-14 SEASON
synopsis Mustafa welcomes Isabella with ceremony. Aside, she remarks that she feels certain that she will be able to deal with him; he, meanwhile, finds her completely enchanting. As she seemingly throws herself on his mercy, the jealous Taddeo starts to make a scene and is saved only when she declares once again that he is her “uncle.” Elvira, Zulma, and Lindoro arrive to say goodbye, and Lindoro and Isabella are stunned to recognize each other. Each, however, think the other may have been unfaithful in their absence. To investigate further, and prevent Lindoro’s departure for Italy, Isabella insists that Mustafa cannot banish his wife. She adds a demand that Lindoro stay as her own personal servant. Between Mustafa’s frustration, the tormented confusion of the lovers, and the bewilderment of the other guests, delirium reigns supreme.
ACT II Elvira and members of the court are amusing themselves by discussing the Italian girl and how easily she has cowed Mustafa, giving Elvira hope of regaining his love. When Mustafa enters, he declares he will redouble his efforts to woo Isabella by visiting her in her room for coffee. Isabella, meanwhile, is upset over Lindoro’s apparent unfaithfulness with Elvira. Lindoro soon appears, however, and reassures her of his loyalty. Isabella promises to cook up a scheme to secure their freedom. Elsewhere, Mustafa and his attendants toy with the cowardly Taddeo. He is told he will be honoured as the Bey’s personal bodyguard, in exchange for helping secure Isabella’s affections. He sees no choice but to accept the compulsory honour. In her room, Isabella prepares for Mustafa’s visit, telling Elvira that the way to keep her husband is to
be more assertive. The Bey, Taddeo, and Lindoro are watching her – and each other – from the shadows as she changes into more seductive attire. When at last she presents herself to Mustafa, he introduces Taddeo as his bodyguard. Mustafa sneezes – a pre-arranged signal for Taddeo to leave – but the jealous Taddeo stays, and when Isabella also invites Elvira to remain for coffee, Mustafa’s displeasure grows. When Isabella insists that he treat his wife more gently, Mustafa bursts into a tantrum while the others marvel at his fulminations. Once the smoke clears, Haly arrives and takes a moment to wonder at the power of Isabella and Italian women in general. Later, Lindoro and Taddeo plan their escape, and Taddeo insists he is Isabella’s true love. Lindoro is amused but plays along, realizing he needs Taddeo’s help in dealing with Mustafa. The Bey enters, still furious. Lindoro convinces him that Isabella actually cares very much for the Bey. In fact, she wants him to prove his worthiness by entering the (fictional) Italian order of Pappataci. Believing this to be a great honour, Mustafa agrees to the initiation ritual: eat, drink, and sleep to excess, and – most importantly – remain blissfully oblivious to everything around you. Mustafa arrives for the ceremony and is pronounced a Pappataci. Food and drink is laid out for him, and he is tested by Isabella and Lindoro, who cuddle and snuggle while Taddeo reminds Mustafa that he must ignore all. The lovers prepare to depart. Taddeo suddenly realizes that he, too, is being tricked and will be left behind, so he tries to rally Mustafa. The Bey persists in keeping his vow of paying no attention. When Mustafa finally responds, the situation is beyond his control and all of the Italians make their escape. Mustafa, his lesson learned, begs Elvira’s forgiveness. Everyone bids a fond farewell, singing the praises of the clever, resourceful girl from Italy.

Calgary Opera and Urban Venus have launched the Be Seduced collection, a set of three exclusive nail colours themed to the performances of the 2013-14 season – a ruby red Italian Girl, sky blue Dutchman and delicate cream Madame Butterfly. “As a supporter of the arts, Urban Venus jumped at the chance to custom blend the colours to match the synergy of the upcoming three operas,” says Urban Venus founder Rachel Ong. “I think the beautifully decorative box of nail polish is a great gift or keepsake to bring a little of the opera experience home.” The set of three is available for $35 at Calgary Opera performances, online at calgaryopera.com and at both Urban Venus locations – while supplies last. Get yours before they’re gone!

emerging artists Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Development Program
is entering its ninth season of helping to forward the careers of young opera singers. Graduates from the program are performing across Canada with the Vancouver Opera, Manitoba Opera, Edmonton Opera, Canadian Opera Company and Opera Lyra Ottawa, among others. Some graduates have also furthered their careers in Europe, performing with Heidelberg Theatre and Orchestra, Heilbronn Theatre, Paris Opera, Aldeburgh Festival, and Netherlands Opera. In addition to their far-reaching success, these young graduates have also made a significant impact on the local arts scene, appearing with Alberta Ballet, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Spiritus Chamber Choir, Calgary Bach Festival Society, and The Festival Chorus. They have also performed recitals with ProArts Calgary and covered the province from Fort McMurray to Medicine Hat with the Opera in Schools tour. While the program focuses on developing the voice through vocal coaching and lessons, our faculty also works with the Emerging Artists to develop their movement, stage fighting, acting skills as well as professional development and direct performance experience. Voice care specialist, Dr. Joseph Warshawski, works with them to better understand the physical care of their instrument. This season, we are excited to welcome Sopranos Julie Ludwig and Laura McLean, Mezzo-Sopranos Alexandra Beley and Courtney V. Murias, Tenors Tonatiuh Abrego and Matthew Johnson, and Bass-Baritone Aaron Dimoff. We’re also happy to welcome back Bass-Baritone Tyler Fitzgerald for his second year with the program. For the Emerging Artist Showcase, our young artists have the opportunity to tackle Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of 20th century’s greatest opera composers. Supported by Emerging Artist Development Program Sponsored by
“Britten’s operas speak magnificently and directly to a contemporary audience. The simplicity of the music makes it accessible and allows the emotional strength of the story to shine through,” says Mel Kirby, Emerging Artist Program Coordinator for Calgary Opera. “The value of being a member of an Emerging Artist program, and working within an opera company cannot be underestimated. The ensemble members obtain very specific vocal and dramatic training, experience on stage, as well as making professional contacts that last a lifetime.”
