A

Avast ye! It is my pleasure to welcome you

to Canada’s first outdoor summer opera festival – Opera in the Village. This is a momentous occasion not only for Calgary Opera but for our city. By taking opera outdoors, we are creating new opportunities for people to enjoy our art form, adding a new element to Calgary’s vibrant artistic community. We would not have this pleasure without the amazing support from our corporate sponsors, government funders, and community partners. From the early days of dreaming about a summer festival, to the enthusiastically received public announcement, to Opening Night of The Pirates of Penzance, we have been amazed by the energy and passion for this festival. So many people love the idea of bringing opera to new audiences in a fun and festive atmosphere. It has been truly overwhelming. Opera in the Village would not have a home were it not for the committed support of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, who understands that building neighbourhoods goes beyond bricks and mortar. Their commitment to community and culture is inspiring and their vision for East Village is extremely exciting. The Remarkable Experience Accelerator Program initiated by the Calgary Hotel Association through Calgary Arts Development supports key projects such as Opera in the Village, recognizing the vital role that the arts play in enhancing Calgary as a destination for visitors. Their investment has gone a long way in helping us realize our vision.

I would also like to thank our presenting sponsor the Imperial Oil Foundation as well as Festival Founders FRAM + Slokker, Embassy Bosa, Cenovus Energy, Big Rock Brewery, as well as Tourism Calgary for their generous support. Opera is a collaborative art form, bringing together vocal performance, orchestration, sets, costumes, lighting and a myriad of people behind-the-scenes who make it all happen. The outcome is a grand experience for people of all ages, from the children participating in our Opera Camp to all of you in our audience for The Pirates of Penzance. I couldn’t be happier to see so many people come together to celebrate music and community. I hope to see you all at the rest of our season at the Jubilee Auditorium. Chair, Marilyn Milavsky

message from the

general director and ceo

A

Avast! Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen! Opera in the Village is underway! Welcome to the innaugural year of Calgary Opera’s summer festival. I can’t begin to express my excitement and pleasure at seeing Calgary become the first city in Canada to present an outdoor opera festival and what better way to experience Gilbert and Sullivan’s cheeky comedy The Pirates of Penzance than on RiverWalk Plaza, steps from the Bow in Calgary’s East Village. When considering the next big project for our company, I found myself drawn to the many fantastic summer opera festivals in North America and Europe. More than a presentation of an opera, these festivals are a true celebration of culture in their cities. Festivals such as Glimmerglass, Glyndebourne, and Santa Fe energize people and raise the profile of their hosting cities as cultural centres. To join these great opera festivals as the first in Canada is truly an honour. The planning of our summer opera festival started over five years ago. We would not have made it past those early days without the support of the City of Calgary’s Event Stimulus Program and the Province of Alberta who shared our vision of making Calgary a great place to be. Each step since has been further supported by our great partners, sponsors and supporters who have come on board. I also want to thank the cast, crew, staff and our Board of Directors, whose efforts have made this festival possible. And the wonderful artists who have joined us to ensure the best possible quality on our stage. This has truly been a labour of love for everyone involved.

I encourage you to experience all that our inaugural year of Opera in the Village has to offer from Arrrias in the Afternoon and the Movie Nights projected on the side of the Simmons building, to the stage-fighting demonstrations and the return of So You Think You Can Sing Opera? – all of the ancillary events are free. This is your chance to celebrate opera with us, outdoors, in the sun, in true festival style. Also, please join us back at the Jubilee Auditorium for our 2013-14 season of seduction, featuring Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Thank you for sharing this with us and we look forward to your feedback, General Director and CEO, W.R. (Bob) McPhee

East Village is evolving into

Calgary’s most livable, walkable, enjoyable downtown neighbourhood.

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) came into being in the spring of 2007, created by Calgary City Council to pursue the ambitious mandate of breathing life into the Rivers District Community Revitalization Plan – a public infrastructure program approved by the City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta to kick-start Calgary’s urban renewal – with an immediate focus on East Village. Spanning 49 acres between Fort Calgary and the downtown business core, East Village resides at the heart of downtown Calgary. A desirable piece of real estate that achieves the highest ideals of “location, location, location,” it is bordered by the Bow River to the north and 9th Avenue SE to the south. Back in 1875, East Village was downtown Calgary, in its entirety. In fact, it’s where the city was founded. It was home to blacksmiths, hoteliers, artists and more.

Fast forward to today, East Village is in the midst of an exciting transformation. Since 2007, CMLC has invested more than $180 million into East Village infrastructure. Construction of two major mixed-use residential projects with roughly 1,400 new condos is well underway, as is construction of the National Music Centre. The first three phases of RiverWalk and RiverWalk Plaza are now complete, and a major redevelopment plan has been unveiled for St. Patrick’s Island – a major recreational amenity to the community. And, more progress announcements are forthcoming. It’s a new dawn for East Village, and an exciting new future for Calgary’s urban living. Welcome to Calgary’s Newest, Oldest, Coolest, Warmest Neighbourhood! www.evexperience.com THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE 11

setting the stage Yar!

The voyage is underway

and it has been no small task to get us to this point. Five years ago, Calgary Opera embarked on the journey to bring an outdoor summer opera festival to Calgary. Though many different sites were considered, including Prince’s Island Park, the final decision settled on Calgary’s East Village neighbourhood. Not only was the community able to provide us with everything we needed in terms of space and power, but it offered great accessibility and a stunning view of the river. In these early days Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) became a stalwart supporter of the festival, and offered Calgary Opera the chance to be a cultural partner in helping to build a new community in Calgary. With the site selected, the creative side cast off. The set, designed by Terry Gunvordahl, was conceived around

the notion of having audience members surrounding the stage. This is atypical for opera, and added additional challenges. Where would stage management and the backstage crew be, and how would singers access the stage? What would be the best way to situate the orchestra? “I wanted the audience to have a unique experience when they came to see The Pirates of Penzance — not to just see a traditional production transported to a tent. I also wanted to keep the audience as close to the action as possible so they can be involved in the action and excitement of the story,” says Gunvordahl. “It was a challenge to make it all work technically as well as visually but having a great creative team is helping to solve those problems.” Set construction began on June 1st and progressed rapidly at The Banff Centre. Due to flooding, construction had to be moved and was completed in Calgary when Polytechnic generously extended their facilities for the opera’s use.

stats and facts On August 1st the cast arrived, ready to put their best pirate boot forward. For this inaugural year, General Director and CEO Bob McPhee recruited the roughest, toughest band of Canada’s best opera singers including Brett Polegato, Tracy Dahl, Colin Ainsworth, Elizabeth Turnbull, Thomas Goerz and Calgary actor David LeReaney with stage director Rob Herriot and conductor Gordon Gerrard at the helm. When I first saw the casting for this show my first reaction was simple fear — fear that all of the laughing and hilarity during the rehearsal process would deter us from getting Pirates staged! As we began to work through the piece my fear subsided only to be replaced with a sense of awe as I watched this cast work. Yes there was hilarity but more than that a professional cohesion a director yearns for in every show,” says Herriot. “A perfect combination — Calgary Opera, this cast and Pirates of Penzance who could ask for anything more?” So sit back, relax, and enjoy Canada’s first outdoor summer opera festival!

Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance was the first opera ever performed in Calgary in 1896 at The Grand Theatre. It’s been 19 years since Calgary Opera last performed it.

• Opera in the Village uses a 10,000 sq.ft tent, encompassing a total aggregate of 15,000 sq.ft in RiverWalk Plaza in East Village. • The open air theatre has over 900 seats with 22,000 lbs of scaffolding to support the seating structure. • The entire festival site comprises a total of 141,000 sq. ft. or 3.2 acres and took nearly three weeks to fully set-up. • The tent stability depends on 65,000 lbs. of concrete weights around the perimeter of the structure. • Opera in the Village has been five years in the making. The kick-off correlates with the 42nd season of Calgary Opera. •

The Pirates of Penzance is performed on an ‘alley’ stage meaning audience members will be facing each other from two sides over the main stage area. This is not common practice for opera, much more often seen in theatre.

• In The Pirates the Penzance, rather than drinking the traditional rum, the pirates drink sherry. Who knew?

ACT I

An Operetta by

Gilbert and Sullivan

August 22 – 25, 2013

synopsis

On a pirate ship off the Cornish coast in the late 1800s, the renowned Pirates of Penzance are celebrating the coming of age of their apprentice, Frederic, who, upon reaching his 21st birthday, is to be freed from his indentures. Ruth (Frederic’s nursery maid when he was younger) explains that Frederic should never have been a pirate except for her mistake: she was told to apprentice Frederic to a pilot, but, being hard of hearing, she misunderstood and placed him with a pirate instead. Frederic tells the pirates that, after he leaves the gang, he intends to destroy them, not because he doesn’t love them, but because he loathes what they do. He is a slave of duty and, when no longer a pirate, it will be his duty to destroy them. The pirates understand. They also complain that they cannot seem to make money. Because Frederic is a slave-ofduty to the pirates until noon, he tells them why: Because they are all orphans, the pirates will not rob another orphan; and since all their potential victims are aware of this, they all claim to be orphans! As the sole female member of their band, Ruth is the only woman Frederic has seen for many years. She manages to persuade the young man, whom she has grown to love, that she is a fine example of womanly beauty. At this point, however, Frederic sees a group of beautiful young women, realizes he was betrayed by Ruth, and rejects her. Frederic informs the women that he is a pirate, but not for long. He asks if any of them will marry him, and the youngest, Mabel, agrees. The pirates enter the scene and each grabs a woman. MajorGeneral Stanley enters and identifies himself as the father of the young women, demanding to know what is taking place. When the pirates tell Major-General Stanley that they intend to marry his daughters, he objects, saying he has an aversion to having pirates for sons-in-law; the pirates respond that they are opposed to having major-generals as fathers-in-law, but that they will put aside the objection. Knowing about the pirates’ weakness, Major-General Stanley tells them he is an orphan and, thus, disarms the pirates and takes his daughters, along with Frederic, away to his family chapel and estate.

INTERMISSION (30 Minutes) ACT II In a ruined chapel bathed in moonlight the Major-General, who is actually not an orphan, soon feels guilty about the lie he has told the pirates. Frederic, anxious to have the pirates arrested, arrives with a contingent of police. Before he can act, however, the Pirate King and Ruth arrive to tell him that he is still obligated to the pirates. Because Frederic was born on February 29 of a leap year, he has served only five birthdays, not the 21 required by his contract. A strong sense of duty forces Frederic to relent, and, because he is a member of the pirate band again, to reveal the truth that Major-General Stanley is not an orphan. The Pirate King vows that he will have revenge on the Major-General. Mabel enters and

begs Frederic not to go back to the pirates, but bound by duty, he leaves. The police ready their attack on the pirates, while the pirates creep in to take revenge on the major-general. The pirates defeat the police. However, when Ruth divulges that the pirates are really noblemen who have gone astray, and that they swear their allegiance to the queen, the tables are turned—and the police take the pirates prisoner. Because the pirates have never really hurt anyone, they are soon forgiven. The ex-pirates win the women, Frederic wins Mabel, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artists ended the

season with a bang, literally! In Rob Herriot’s unique staging of Susanna’s Secret, the abusive Count got his just desserts, a surprising and unexpected end that startled many of our audience members. Likewise, with The Spanish Hour, his direction built on the stereotypical characters, delivering a rich portrayal of the classic work. Each season, the Emerging Artist Development Program provides up to eight young singers with the opportunity to study and perform under a highly prestigious professional staff of teachers and performers.
