Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the first of three
performances in the Edmonton Opera 2011-12 season. Tonight you will see two operas, Cavelleria Rusticana, a Sicilian story of passion and betrayal but also of love and honour, justice and violence. I Pagliacci is Leoncavallo’s “play within an opera” which unmasks the tragic side of comedy. We hope you enjoy watching both, laugh and cry with us. Your Edmonton Opera is a busy, creative and exciting place. The best way to follow the action is a regular visit to our new website www.edmontonopera.com. To stay even more plugged in follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Beyond great operatic performances, you might also enjoy participating in our signature special events such as the Opera Brunches held at the Westin before each opening, the fabulous Valentines Gala, February 14th, the Edmonton Opera/CGI golf tournament, June 14th and Opera al Fresco, June 22nd. Edmonton Opera always appreciates good women and men that volunteer and help us bring opera alive, help us teach young people in school about the joys of the art form or work with us on a special event and perhaps even pick up some new skills and meet other people who love opera. Finally, as one of the more complex and expensive art forms being presented today, Edmonton Opera would benefit greatly from your financial support. Donations, endowments, grants and bequests are most welcome. You might also consider joining our Director’s Circle, an exclusive membership relationship where after a starting donation you will receive a full range of insider benefits including opening night and private receptions, an invitation to a Director’s Circle orchestra dress rehearsal, acknowledgement of your gift in production playbills and a tax receipt for the maximum permitted amount. Join us and the Edmonton Opera in making opera come alive in our great city. Ladies and gentlemen the curtain is about to rise. Enjoy!

The 2011/12 Edmonton Opera Season is sponsored by Dr. Dianne and Irving Kipnes. Both, Dianne and Irv are known for their generous commitments to the community and volunteering.
“Supporting the arts is a difficult business. It seems like it is one area in which we take an interest when times are good; but the arts are the first to be cut when economic circumstances are diminished,” says Dr. Kipnes. Irv and Dianne are well known in our community for their unwavering support of the arts, and Edmonton Opera in particular. Their long-standing commitment to help us achieve sustainable growth, has meant a great deal to us as we work together with both Irv and Dianne actualizing our ideas, plans and pathways towards a compelling future. Their involvement with Edmonton Opera has lasted for many years; both at the Board level, and as distinguished patrons. In both those areas they have provided exemplary leadership, friendship and stewardship, and have helped us reignite our passion to produce the greatest opera we can for our community. Through their commitment to the health and dignity of seniors and veterans, and their love of opera, Irv and Dianne have created a remarkable synergy between Edmonton Opera and The Capital Care Foundation, with the result of a truly wonderful integrated approach to both bettering physical and emotional health. Each year this synergy finds expression in the Valentine’s Gala, an event that has truly come to be the social event of the season. “We hope that our gift to Edmonton Opera is an example of how individuals, corporations and foundations can choose an art form and become a sponsor for one year or many years. We encourage you to adopt an opera, a symphony, a theatre or a dance troupe, or a director, actor or dancer. There are many different levels of sponsorship and there are so many arts groups that would love to have a patron.” Edmonton Opera thanks Dr. Dianne & Irving Kipnes for their ongoing support and commitment.

Pietro Mascagni
Pietro Mascagni (Livorno, December 7, 1863 - Rome, August 2, 1945) is one of the most important Italian opera composers of the turn of the 20th century. The formidable success of his first masterpiece in 1890, Cavalleria Rusticana, which almost singlehandedly ignited the verismo movement in Italian opera, unfortunately eluded many of his following works. Mascagni however wrote 15 operas, an operetta, several beautiful orchestral and vocal works, as well as songs and piano music. He enjoyed amazing operatic successes during his lifetime, and at the same time pursued a very successful career as a conductor. Mascagni’s approach to opera differed greatly from that of his friend and rival Puccini – arguably one of the reasons why critics underestimated the value of his music, yet today, Cavalleria Rusticana remains one of the most popular of Italian operas, firmly positioned in the standard repertoire.
Ruggero Leoncavallo Neapolitan by birth and the son of a police magistrate, Ruggero Leoncavallo (Naples, March 8, 1857 – Montecatini, August 9, 1919) studied music in Naples and literature at Bologna, and seemed about to make a career as a librettist. His operatic ambitions found their only really successful result in Pagliacci, for which he wrote both words and music. Pagliacci, a story of love and jealousy in a troupe of commedia dell’arte actors, has achieved a permanent place in operatic repertoire; it is often coupled with Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. Pagliacci’s most famous aria “Vesti la giubba” was recorded by Enrico Caruso and laid claim to being the world’s first record to sell a million copies (although this is probably a total of Caruso’s various versions of it made in 1902, 1904 and 1907). Leoncavallo’s first opera, Chatterton, won no favour, while his version of La Bohème was soon eclipsed by that of Puccini.

S
SYNOPSIS Cavalleria Rusticana /I Pagliacci Composers: Pietro Mascagni, Ruggero Leoncavallo
Cavalleria Rusticana Easter dawns in a Sicilian village. Turiddu is heard in the distance singing about Lola, wife of the prosperous carter Alfio (“O Lola, bianca come fior di spino”). Townsfolk and fieldworkers mingle in the piazza, then disperse. Santuzza approaches Mamma Lucia’s tavern looking for her son Turiddu; the old woman says he is away buying wine. Alfio arrives with his friends, boasting of his horses— and of his new wife, Lola (“Il cavallo scalpita”). He leaves as the villagers follow a procession to mass. Santuzza, who is unwilling to enter the church, stays behind to tell Mamma Lucia that Turiddu has abandoned her for his old flame, Lola (“Voi lo sapete”). The old woman leaves for mass, and Santuzza confronts Turiddu (“Tu qui, Santuzza?”). Lola saunters in, infuriating Santuzza with her brazen arrogance. Lola enters the church, and Santuzza resumes her pleading, but Turiddu refuses to listen. Pushing her to the ground, he runs into the church. Santuzza curses him. When Alfio arrives, Santuzza reveals that his wife has been cheating on him. Alfio swears to get even and rushes off, followed by the now conscience-stricken Santuzza. Intermezzo The villagers exit the church and join Turiddu in a drinking song, but the atmosphere becomes tense when Alfio appears, insulting Turiddu and challenging him to a knife fight. Turiddu admits his guilt but will go through with the fight, for Santuzza’s sake as well as for honor. Alone with his mother, Turiddu thanks her for the wine and begs her to take care of Santuzza if he doesn’t come back (“Mamma, quel vino”). As Mamma Lucia waits anxiously in the piazza, shouts are heard in the distance. A woman runs in screaming that Turiddu has been killed.
I Pagliacci Before the opera begins, Tonio the clown steps before the curtain (“Si può?”) to announce that the author has written a true story and that even actors and clowns have the same joys and sorrows as other people. Villagers in a town in Calabria gather around a small theatrical company that has just arrived. Canio, the head of the troupe, describes the night’s offerings (“Un grande spettacolo”). When one of the villagers suggests that Tonio is secretly courting Canio’s wife, Nedda, Canio warns that he will tolerate no flirting off stage (“Un tal gioco”). Vesper bells call the women to church and the men to the tavern, leaving Nedda alone. Disturbed by her husband’s jealousy, she envies the freedom of the birds in flight (“Stridono lassù”). Tonio tries to force himself on her. She beats him back and he swears revenge. In fact, Nedda does have a lover—Silvio, who appears and persuades her to run away with him after the evening’s performance (“E allor perchè”). Tonio overhears this and hurries off to tell Canio. The jealous husband bursts in on the guilty pair, but Silvio runs away before Canio can identify him. Nedda, even when threatened with a knife, refuses to reveal the man’s name. Beppe, another clown, restrains Canio and Tonio advises him to wait until the evening’s performance to catch Nedda’s lover. Alone, Canio bitterly reflects that he must play the clown while his heart is breaking (“Vesti la giubba”). The villagers, including Silvio, assemble to see the commedia dell’arte performance. Harlequin (played by Beppe) serenades Columbine (Nedda) and dismisses her buffoonish servant Taddeo (Tonio). The two lovers dine together and plot to poison Columbine’s husband Pagliaccio (played by Canio), who soon arrives. Harlequin slips away. With pointed malice, Taddeo assures Pagliaccio of his wife’s innocence, which ignites Canio’s jealousy. Forgetting the play, he demands Nedda tell him the name of her lover (“No, Pagliaccio non son”). She tries to continue with the play, the audience enthralled by its realism. Enraged, Canio stabs Nedda and Silvio, who rushes to help her. Tonio announces to the horrified villagers that the comedy is ended. CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA/I PAGLIACCI 15

Once upon a time...
in the last Century, some of the greatest visionaries of our community started something magical. Their powers matched their generous nature and allowed them to look into the future. There they saw the success of Endowment funds raised by and for non-profit Arts organizations, like Edmonton Opera. They knew that these Funds would provide the Opera greater stability to allow confident planning and artistic flexibility – decades and centuries into the future. SO our magical visionaries started an Opera Endowment Fund within the Edmonton Community Foundation to provide additional income for generations to come. They harnessed the extra energy of a Fantastic Federal Fund from Canada Culture, which matches donor dollars each year to help the Opera’s Funds grow – like Jack’s beanstalk. AT the end of 2010, the Opera’s Endowment Funds totalled $2,430,966, and in May this year the Opera was notified that the “match” for the funds raised in 2010 was an extra $151,496. We have already received some donations this year and we hope to make full use of the federal match this year as well. Our first target is $10 million. IF you can make a (tax-deductible) donation to the Endowment Fund, now is the time to do it. To make a donation please contact Glenda Dennis at (780) 424-4040 or glenda.dennis@edmontonopera.com at the Opera office for more information. If you want to give securities (for double tax benefits), we will be happy to help. AS always, thank you for your continuing support.

Get swept up in the spectacular adventure of Moby-Dick, a story of pure obsession and how it profoundly affects people’s lives. Hailed by critics and cheered by audiences at its world premiere, Moby-Dick follows the classic tale of Captain Ahab and his obsessive search for the white whale that crippled him.
