22 A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Donald and Lorna Kramer Donald and Lorna Kramer have been part of the Citadel Theatre family for close to four decades. As season subscribers and donors, their passion and generosity for the performing arts continues to make a difference here at the Citadel.
Why did you first give to the Citadel Theatre?
How long have you been donating to the Citadel Theatre?
In the mid 1970’s we were new to Edmonton and discovered the Citadel Theatre. We always enjoyed live theatre as a welcome form of entertainment. Don and I believe that a strong theatre makes for a stronger community.
We first started donating to the Citadel in the late seventies after arriving in Edmonton. There was a hiatus while we raised our family but we have now been donating for over a dozen years.
What interests you most about the Citadel Theatre? There are several things that interest us about the Citadel, but if we had to pick one thing it is probably the fact that we are able to see actors and performers that we might otherwise never have experienced.
What do you tell others about us? Other people often tell us what we already know; we enjoy a first rate facility managed by a dedicated team of professionals. The organization is also backed by a caring volunteer board.
24 A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Would you encourage others to give to the Citadel Theatre? If we want to sustain our world class theatre we have to encourage our friends to support the Citadel Theatre. As noted at the beginning, a strong arts community is essential. As the Joni Mitchell lyric goes – “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” – we would regret losing this wonderful theatre.
What keeps you continuing to donate to us? We feel it is important to preserve the legacy of this theatre, for our children and grandchildren. We have seen plays all over the world, but there is no place like home! The Citadel Theatre is world class and we have it right here in our own back yard.

“ Taking classes at the Foote Theatre School as a child shaped me as a person, and as a theatre actor and director. I was a shy, introverted kid – the classes built my self-confidence, encouraged my imagination and spirit, and endowed me with a life-long love of the arts. Whether you are a complete novice or a budding actor, theatre classes are an outstanding way for children and adults of all ability levels to develop communication skills, to build confidence in public speaking and interaction, and, of course, to perform, play, and have a great time.” JAMES MacDONALD

It is a matter-of-fact David Ives on the phone. “I was talking to Stephen (Sondheim) just minutes before you called. We are changing Act I of our new show around – so we had to talk about changes to the plot.” (The musical is to be based on a blend of two movies from European director Luis Bunuel.) “We don’t have a title yet but musicals have to be carefully structured before you start writing so you know where the songs will fall.”

It is no surprise that Ives should be talking to Stephen Sondheim. The two are titans of American theatre. Ives grew up, as he observes, “...among the steel mills of South Chicago.” He went on to become a hugely prolific playwright with subjects ranging from light comedy (an adaptation of the Feydeau farce A Flea in Her Ear) through musicals – (adapting some 33 classic Broadway musicals for the “Encores! Great American Musicals In Concert” series including Reba McIntyre’s turn as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific) to his most successful drama Venus in Fur which premiered Off-Broadway in 2010. It then went on to garner astonishing international success and became the most-produced play in North America last year. Venus in Fur will start the new year on the mainstage of the Citadel. When he was young, Ives’ parents used to take him to dinner-theatre and travelling musicals. “When I was about 7 years old my mother took me to see Pinocchio and probably ruined me for life because I fell in love with the Blue Fairy.” Ten years later, he was taken to a travelling production of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance starring Hume

Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. “My life was pretty well transformed by seeing that play. I felt without a doubt, that was what I should be doing.” In commenting on his wide range of subjects he says, “I don’t think I choose what I write about – I think it chooses me. The ideas just come to me. Sometimes out of a newspaper. Or I hear something whispered on a bus. Often it’s an idea I can’t get rid of – it just stays with me – sometimes for years. Sondheim and I have been friends for years and he came to me with his idea. I liked it and we quickly became collaborators.” He goes on, “My original, rather stupid, idea was to turn the book The Story of O into a play.” (Well-thumbed copies of the French story of a sexually abused fashion photographer became the quintessential ‘50’s “dirty book” and was much read by 17 year old boys). “It was a terrible idea because it was completely undramatic. At that point, I re-read Leopold von SacherMasoch’s Venus in Furs and I realized that this was a book that wanted to be turned into a play.” (The term “masochism,” taken from Leopold’s last name, modern psychiatry tells us is “the condition in which sexual gratification depends on suffering physical pain or humiliation.”) “The relationship between the characters is so emotionally and erotically complicated. As I read the book, I began to wonder what the two would say to each other and so I started to work on it. My first draft wasn’t very good and my director, Walter Bobbie, read it and did

not care much for it. He gave me a few notes. I went away for a few months and thought about it. Then I picked it up and wrote it in 9 days.” Venus in Fur has Thomas, a director, exhausted after a day of auditioning young actresses for the central role in a play called Venus in Fur. None of them had what he wanted. The door of the theatre bursts open and Vanda, coarse, loud and ill-focussed, arrives late to audition. Thomas wants to go home but is intrigued by this creature who demands his attention. And so begins an electrifying cat-and-mouse game, as the locus of power lurches back and forth between the two. Just beneath Vanda’s unpacked surface lies a latent charge of ferocious intelligence – sensual and cerebral. Fantasy and reality begin to blur as they take on the characteristics of the characters in the play. In an erotic dance they test the boundaries of gender roles and sexual conventions, of dominance and submission. “We had no idea of how the play would be received,” the playwright remembers. “We thought it might appeal to a wider audience. Any show that is about intimate relationships is going to be of interest to people. I also think that any show that has a woman walking

One New York reviewer enthused, “90 minutes of good, kinky fun!” Other reviewers noted, pRicEd “A seriously smart and very funny seminar onREASONABLy the destabilizing nature of sexual desire” and “There is no nudity but this is the most genuinely sexual show you’ve ever seen.” Says Ives, “I would say this play is more rooted in the mind than in the body. Sexual physical contact on the stage is inevitably ridiculous and so it was part of my job, I suppose, to delay physical gratification. Venus... is about what happens between two people in their minds and emotions. Sex is secondary. Pornography is about anatomy. Eroticism is about the mind.”
Bellagio Village by Bob Pegman
When artistic director Bob Baker announced that he was planning Venus in Fur as part of his season this year the phone calls began. The role of Vanda is a monumental challenge to an actress and it’s easy to see why it would appeal to any performer who values their art. It can also create a career. A young actress named Nina Arianda first played the role and has gone on to become Broadway’s latest new thing. Said the New York Times, “A bravura turn that burns so brightly you can almost feel the heat on your face.” Theatre is a collaborative effort and the actress’s effortless brilliance also demonstrated to the author that he had written a play with more in it than he thought. “I really didn’t know what I had on my hands.

I tended to think of it as a drama with a tinge of comedy. But when I saw Arianda I realized for the first time how much comedy there was in it.” Directing Venus in Fur in Edmonton will be James MacDonald – known for such distinguished Citadel productions as God of Carnage, Clybourne Park and A Few Good Men. MacDonald embarked on a continent-spanning audition tour talking to many Canadian performers. “It was a difficult process. Both actors have to play multiple characters and multiple personalities. I came across a number of actresses who were terrific in one aspect of the character but couldn’t find the others. I needed someone who first comes off as of ‘low status’ and yet could become the dominant force on stage. As for Thomas, what I needed was an immensely likeable, selfcentred, misogynist jerk. I came back and found both of my performers in Edmonton. Alana Hawley will be Vanda. Her first major role was in a St. Albert Children’s Theatre production of Grease. Since then she has moved on to Stratford and other major international theatres including turns at the Citadel in The Three Musketeers and Little Women. Says MacDonald, “For me she caught the contradictions in the woman. You look at her at first and say, ‘she’s just a big goof ball’ but then you say ‘she’s a femme fatale’ – and then, ‘oh no, she’s very classy’. Alana makes you believe in all aspects of the character.”

Jamie Cavanagh (East of Berlin/Romeo & Juliet), who plays Thomas, has his task set out for him. Thomas is a somewhat reactive role and there is great danger the performer may find himself absorbed by the force of nature that is Vanda. MacDonald is very aware of the problem and that is one of the reasons he chose Cavanagh – a subtle actor who has no problems commanding a stage. “The play is about a lot more than sex,” says MacDonald, echoing the playwright. “If it is to work we have to see the power balance shifting back and forth between the two. I think as director that will be my primary job – to make sure that we keep the audience off balance.” Venus in Fur is about two people trapped in a world of their own making. They can neither control nor escape and they will be profoundly changed. The play invites us to share their perilous journey. Venus in Fur previews January 17 on the mainstage of the Citadel.
