Following the performance, students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to The Sound of Music, Students Club members will be treated to a pre-show presentation exploring the remarkable collaborative process that goes on between Music Director and performer in bringing a song to life. This exciting pre-show event will offer students a unique opportunity to observe and contribute as they watch the remarkable stages of this process unfold live in front of them. PLAYWRIGHTS RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in American musical theatre. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a twenty-five year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel (1945); the movie State Fair (1945, remade 1962, Broadway premiere 1996); Allegro (1947); South Pacific (1949); The King and I (1951); Me and Juliet (1953); Pipe Dream (1955); the TV musical Cinderella (1957, remade 1965, 1997); Flower Drum Song (1958) and The Sound of Music (1959).

HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE The Lindsay & Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for more than 28 years. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred co-author Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning The State of the Union and Happy Hunting. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story and Arsenic and Old Lace. Howard Lindsay was born in Waterford, New York in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at nineteen; his first big break was to act and direct in the George S. Kaufman hit Dulcy in 1921. Lindsay wrote many plays before teaming up with Russel Crouse on Anything Goes in 1934. Among his acting credits is the role of the King in the original television production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 1957. Russel Crouse was born in Findlay, Ohio in 1893 and died in 1966. At seventeen he became a reporter for the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. After serving in the Navy in World War I, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on, he wrote only with Lindsay. 32 THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Based on true events, The Sound of Music is a beloved family musical that has been enjoyed the world-over for decades.

The play was first commissioned for Broadway in 1959, produced following the inspiring story of the von Trapp family, who were the focus of the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers and two West German films, The Trapp Family and The Trapp Family in America. While based on true events, the musical would alter many of the details for stage. Notably, the names of the children have been changed (the eldest was actually a boy) and the timeline is condensed considerably for the play. At first, the play featured only the songs of the von Trapps – music that they had often performed themselves. When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein were brought on board, at first for just a couple of songs, the play evolved from a drama to a full-fledged musical production, capturing the spirit of the original family, but adding the zest and flair of Broadway to their story. The original Broadway production was an immediate success with 1,443 performances over three and a half years. In London, the play ran for an incredible 2,385 performances, starting mid-1961. The play would be re-produced the world over, translated into several languages and in 1965, shot on film on location in Austria, Bavaria and Southern Germany. This Hollywood version, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, popularized the music and story of the von Trapps like never before, and it is with great pride that we re-introduce their tale on stage for Edmonton audiences.

T

he season next year includes the theatre’s classic production of A Christmas Carol as well as Atomic Vaudeville’s Ride the Cyclone, so there are 8 mainstage productions. In July of 1986, a cabal of American Marines at the infamous Guantanamo Bay Naval Base decided one Pfc. William Alvarado had informed on a fellow Marine who had fired his rifle across the border into Cuba – a serious breach of discipline. In retaliation, and, apparently with the knowledge and support of their superior officers, a “code red” was instituted and ten Marines blindfolded Pfc. Alvarado, stuffed a rag in his mouth and beat him nearly to death. Later, 7 of the Marines were discharged but one, David Cox, refused to accept a plea bargain, was found guilty of simple assault, served his time in the brig and returned to active duty. Deborah Sorkin was a lawyer and signed on to defend the Marines. Before she left New York, she phoned her brother, Aaron, and told him about her job. At the time, he was delivering singing telegrams during the day and working as a bartender at the Palace Theatre at night. The 22 year old thought it was a great idea for a play and began to write it on bar napkins during his shift. Later he would borrow his roommate’s computer and transcribe the snatches of plot and dialogue he wrote during the night. The resulting play, A Few Good Men, a thrilling military courtroom drama, opened on Broadway in 1989 starring Tom Hulce (Amadeus) and proved to be a big hit. Rob Reiner filmed it in 1992, with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson and the result became a box office phenomenon (and best picture Oscar nominee).

Sorkin went on to write TV’s The West Wing and such films as Charlie Wilson’s War, The Social Network and Moneyball. Casting about for a work suitable for the Citadel, Bob Baker picked up Sorkin’s play. “It’s a political drama and a courtroom drama – and like The West Wing or The Social Network, it’s smart, smart, smart. It’s also a good, substantial piece of theatre – plot driven, with memorable characters.” He was impressed enough to put together a co-production with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and employ the Citadel’s master of all things theatrical, James MacDonald, to direct. (The protean MacDonald will also take over the role of Scrooge in the Citadel’s A Christmas Carol this year.) In awarding the Pulitzer Prize to Next to Normal in 2010, the committee called the show, “a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals.” The Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics) and Tom Kitt

(music) work is about a mother who struggles with worsening bi-polar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The throbbing score may not conform to the rhythms of conventional musicals but the poignant Broadway production met with almost universal acclaim. Baker’s comment, “It’s harsh, contemporary and disturbing and it reaches out and touches all generations.” This co-production with Theatre Calgary will be directed by Ron Jenkins, who is certainly no stranger to edgy material, and has given us such successful productions as Extinction Song and The Black Rider. Next to Normal opens on October 20th. In February, the Citadel takes you to the other end of the theatrical universe with Baker’s production of Nöel Coward’s 1930 comedy of manners, Private Lives. This would complete a trifecta of Coward for Baker following his impeccable productions Blithe Spirit and Present Laughter. “There is a whole list of contemporary stuff next year so it will be fun to return to a rich classic,” he says. The plot focuses on two of Coward’s oh-so-sophisticated characters, Elyot and Amanda, who are on a honeymoon with their new spouses only to discover that their recently divorced partners are staying in the same hotel. The two had experienced a perpetually stormy relationship but realize they are still madly in love. (Coward characters are always “madly in love.”) Expect sensuality, sass and screwball comedy as well as memorable songs like, Someday I’ll Find You. The Kite Runner was the first novel written by Khaled Hosseini. Published in 2003, it became an unexpected international best seller and was made into a successful movie in 2007. It tells the story of Amir, a young boy from Kabul in Afghanistan. His closest

friend is Hassan, the son of his father’s servant. The epic story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events from the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy through the Soviet invasion and the exodus of refugees to Pakistan, coming to the United States and the rise of the Taliban. The plot revolves around an act of youthful cowardice that affects the two friends for the rest of their lives. The Kite Runner opens on March 9th. Now, we all know about Ulysses – the Greek hero who battled the Trojans for ten years, came up with the Trojan horse and took another 10 years to return home to his loving wife, Penelope, while battling with the cyclops and falling under the spell of various sirens and demi-goddesses. But how much do we know about Penelope herself? The poor queen was abandoned by her spouse for 20 years but remained true. When the wandering Ulysses finally showed up, he slaughtered all his wife’s suitors and, for good measure, her faithful maids because of what he deemed was their consorting with the hangers on.

In 2005, Margaret Atwood was commissioned to retell the tale from Penelope’s point of view. The feminist take, called The Penelopiad, rose to the top of the best-selling charts in Canada. Next, Atwood wrote a dramatic version which was picked up as a co-production between the Royal Shakespeare Company in England and the National Arts Centre in Canada. The play, with its all female cast, was deemed a success, attracting large audiences and glowing reviews (“3.5 stars out of 4” beamed the Globe and Mail). Penelope, at last, gets her full due in the Citadel production opening on March 30. One night Baker was watching a Citadel audience convulsed with laughter in reaction to The Rocky Horror Show and thought he’d like to give his patrons that gift again. He immediately thought of Monty Python’s Spamalot, which, as the ads say, is “lovingly ripped off from the motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The show has been described as, “...an idiot’s delight of sketches strung together into an ever so slight plot.” One of the original Pythons, Eric Idle (book/lyrics/music), also took great delight in sending up musical theatre cliches – Lloyd Webber gets his lumps as does Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story and the glitz of Vegas. “I just wanted something wildly entertaining,” says Baker. “Spamalot is a crazy, silly show and a great audience pleaser.” The new musical, Ride the Cyclone, comes to the Citadel as part of a national tour. The work, by a group of creative young people from Victoria’s Atomic Vaudeville Company, concerns six high school choir members who die in a roller coaster accident in small town Saskatchewan. They return to speculate on how their lives might have worked out. It’s a slightly creepy premise but hilarious and touching in the telling. A combination of word-of-mouth and ecstatic reviews turned it into “the hottest ticket in town” in Vancouver and from there it went on to conquer Toronto and, like such Canadian productions as The Drowsy Chaperone and Blind Date, it is now on its way to Broadway. Irreverent and buoyant, Ride the Cyclone will touch down at the Citadel in February.

JULIETTE ESHLEMAN

Brigitta

Juliette is “ecstatic” to be back on the Citadel stage, particularly in a musical production so dear to her heart! The Sound of Music has long been a favourite of hers, and her random and irrepressible need to break into song has not infrequently involved songs from this classic. Only vaguely tolerant of her perpetual trilling, Juliette’s attempts at yodeling have upped the ante on her brothers’ irritation. That said, they are not so secretly proud of her! This will be Juliette’s fifth show with the Citadel, having played a Tiny Tot Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz, and the Ghost of Christmas Past over the last three years of A Christmas Carol. She has enjoyed every moment of every performance, and is forever grateful for the wonderful opportunities she has been given. Juliette would like to thank her family for doing everything they do to make her participation possible, her teachers for being supportive of the extra work it involves for them, and to everyone she works with at the Citadel for making it so much fun!

MUSICAL DIRECTOR about the

MUSICAL DIRECTOR

It was an unexpected and fortunate series of events that brought me to a career as Musical Director.

At the age of 27, I decided to change course from an undergraduate degree in education (having already taught special education, music, and math for a number of years).

I travelled to the Banff Centre and worked as a piano jockey – part of a group of round the clock accompanists, available to talented artists for lessons and production rehearsals in the Banff Centre’s Music Theatre summer program. The program Music Director at the time was Howard Cable, and he appointed me as his Assistant. At the conclusion of the summer, Howard asked if I would consider auditioning for some gigs he was too busy to handle. I travelled to Niagara on the Lake, and was introduced to a high profile actor and cabaret artist – Tom Kneebone. After an afternoon rehearsal in the Shaw lobby (which in my estimation had not gone very well), I was invited to dinner. After the main course Tom leaned back in his chair and asked: (Tom) (Me) (Tom) (Me) (Tom) (Me) (Tom

“What have you done?” “Choral directing, teaching, accompanying, recording, playing in bands, University of Toronto, CBC radio production, and I’ve worked for the circus” “Tell me about the circus” “Okay…” May 24th weekend, Ontario Place. There is a ferocious north wind and it’s barely above zero. I’m visiting the various acts at their trailers, determining what they do, choosing tunes to accompany them, and keeping an eye on the tent (threatening to blow away). Eventually it’s time to start the show… the first acts go by without incident. Then the animal act: a horse is led to the head of the ring, a lion is wheeled out in a cage and the cage door is opened. The lion, who is supposed to run and jump on the horse’s back and ride around the ring, balks and sits! The horse becomes impatient, breaks into a trot, circles the ring and heads straight towards me! The tent boys (peeking around the curtain watching the show) jump out of the way and kick the electrical boxes – the tent goes to black. In complete darkness a horse is being reined up over my Fender-Rhodes piano and a lion is at large!” “What did you do!?” “I kept playing” “You’re hired!”

That was the beginning of what continues to be a pretty interesting, multi-faceted, and wonderful thirty years as a Musical Director. As I reflect on those years, certain pinnacle in-sync moments come to mind such as: having 30 to 120 people in chorus singing in tune, in time, articulating simultaneously with precision, and expressing the musical line with gorgeous uninterrupted phrasing, or my first visit to the Stratford Shakespearian Festival that left me with intense visceral and intellectual impressions – I was inspired! 66 THE SOUND OF MUSIC

(from left to right) Don Horsburgh, Mike Lent, Sandro Dominelli, Dave Babcock, Mark Sterling, Chris Andrew (the band from The Rocky Horror Show)

I suppose this led to the seventeen seasons as Composer where I provided original music for the Stratford Shakespearian Festival, and an experience of working with a completely revised story and therefore revised musical rendering of Rigoletto, Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto. Other memories include time working for Garth Drabinsky on Aspects of Love, Live Ent. Toronto, and musical directing the US National tour of The Sound of Music’s Broadway revival. A very special time came when Bob Baker asked me what show I wanted to do next. This followed being paired as director and musical director at the “Doras”, a Toronto award event. I quickly responded “Sondheim” and he said “Let’s do it!” We became the first to present Sondheim in Toronto with Into the Woods. Another highlight was scoring Bob Baker’s production of Angels in America, Canadian Stage Company, Toronto. The current ‘in sync’ Musical Director moments include: Sweeney Todd and a rocking version of The Rocky Horror Show, teaching and supporting the Robbins Academy, and the latest… the introduction of a Cabaret series to the Citadel Theatre’s audiences. My thinking is that I have led a rich, varied, and inspired life… “Plus qu’il change, plus qu’il semble la meme chose” Over time I have graduated from a one to a three-ring circus as the Citadel Theatre is now using its Big Tops, and its smaller theatres and performance spaces in new and exciting ways. Still my days are similar: I organize, prepare, teach, compose, and perform. As the very nature of creating theatre is collaborative, I feel privileged to be a part of this huge collaborative effort time after time. My heart has been blessed with the sound of music, and it is a joy to roll up my sleeves, get in there, turn it right, left, upside down; bringing all singing, actors, and orchestra, in united sound to finally land squarely on the horse’s back! I hope you enjoy the show,

Don Horsburgh, Musical Director, Citadel Theatre

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, and BOARD PRESIDENT Poole Family Fund for their visionary support of the creative development of artists and youth at the Citadel over the years. Thanks to all three orders of government, we have a rejuvenated facility enjoyed, not only by our theatre patrons, but by thousands of citizens annually. We are honoured to be the stewards of this amazing centre of creativity and community – home of the Edmonton Comedy Festival, University of Alberta Festival of Ideas, Rapid Fire Theatre, The Cappies, and many others. The year was not without its challenges as we managed economic pressures, grieved the loss of beloved members of our team, and implemented institutional changes to our pricing and ticketing options. Thanks to your unfailing support, the Citadel remains a vital presence in our city, province and throughout Canada – and looks to the future – our 50th Anniversary in 2015! Finally, we owe a standing ovation to our artists, production teams, management, staff, volunteers and Board for their hard work and love of the arts. With our deepest gratitude,
