STUDENTS CLUB We are thrilled to welcome back our 1000 Students Club Members as they prepare to enjoy Kim’s Convenience, the first show of the 2014/15 Citadel Theatre Season. The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. n the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club O members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. All of our pre-show presentations this year will be hosted by Edmonton’s own Patrick Lundeen. Patrick is a multi-faceted artist who is a regular on the Citadel stage, having appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Christmas Carol and most recently in last season’s Romeo and Juliet. Patrick is a graduate of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program and is also an instructor at the Foote Theatre School. Patrick is looking forward to sharing as much as he can with Edmonton’s young theatre audience. Patrick Lundeen We love having students participate in the theatre we present and are excited to kick off the 2014/15 season. If you would like to become part of this season’s Students Club, or require more information about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales, at 780.428.2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please email Shirley at groupsales@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES My father grew up in North Korea. Since his birth, until the end of the Second World War, it was “occupied” by the Japanese. Soon after WWII, the Korean civil war broke out. During that time, he and his family walked south, across the mountainous Korean peninsula with thousands of others in search of freedom. My mother grew up in an orphanage in war-torn South Korea raising her younger brother from the age of five. After graduating high school, she was working as a secretary for the government when she met my father. They set foot in Canada in 1975 with $200, three kids and hope. My father worked at my uncle’s convenience store by day and went to ESL classes by night while my mother took care of me and my two older sisters. We lived with my uncle’s family in the apartment above their convenience store on Weston Road and Black Creek Drive. After a performance of Kim’s Convenience at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, my parents came up to me, hugged me and said, “We are very proud of you. Thank you.” Kim’s Convenience is my love letter to them and to all first generation immigrants who call Canada their home. I am deeply honoured and thrilled that you are here as part of the Kim’s Convenience tour.
Mari, you had more faith in me than I had in myself. Love you… you too Poem… you too River. Ins Choi

They call it The Club. It rose from the ashes of the Rice Theatre to establish its own spark. After a couple of years of trying to find its place in the Edmonton scene, The Club shows all the signs of a vibrant life of its own. Patrons will warmly remember the shows that have found a home in its cozy but highly theatrical space. Think of Ronnie Burkett’s Theatre of Marionettes and A Craigslist Cantata, or of the terrific smaller shows from performers such as Bridget Ryan, Réjean Cournoyer, Rebecca Northan and Susan Gilmour. This year a partial list of shows scheduled for the Beyond the Stage series includes the return of Susan Gilmour, this time partnered with the other Ryan sister, honey-voiced Kate Ryan, in an evening of Sondheim music called Kate Ryan & Susan Gilmour It Takes Two. Other (selected) highlights include Edmonton expat Krystle Dos Santos and an evening of The MOTOWN Sound and, next spring, a staged conversation called Winners and Losers between two long-time theatre artists, Marcus Youssef and James Long. More on The Club later but as you settle down to watch the awardwinning Canadian family drama, Kim’s Convenience we turn to the season on the Mainstage. Sep 20 - Oct 11, 2014

The next show in the big hall, the British smash One Man, Two Guvnors, may be the most hysterical import from Old Blighty since Ricky Gervais. It has driven even the often sour British critics (and subsequently critics in New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia etc. etc.) into hysterics looking for words to adequately describe this modern adaptation of the 18th century Goldoni farce, The Servant of Two Masters. The convoluted plot can not be properly outlined here – suffice to say it’s about a rascal who is employed by two criminals – one a gangster and the other an upper class racketeer. If he wants to stay alive, he must keep one master from knowing about the

other. This comic gem, starring our own John Ullyatt, will also feature live music performed by the popular ukulele band, The Be Arthurs. Director: Bob Baker. Note the date: October 25. The Citadel will turn the heat up in January with Venus in Fur, an intelligent and sexy two-hander. This is another play that started off-Broadway, and went on to huge acclaim and, last year, was the most produced play in North America. Venus in Fur is a hot little number that features a director lamenting the inadequacies of actors who are applying for a complex role. At the end of a long day an actor, described as “crude, compliant and desperate,” arrives for a reading. Not only is she what he is looking for – she sets in motion an unspoken, but subtly ever-shifting, power battle between the two. “It’s smart. It’s subversive. It’s adventurous and bold,” says Baker. The relationship between Jonathan Christenson’s Catalyst Theatre and the Citadel has been mutually rewarding. A couple of years ago, Baker commissioned Christenson (who writes the words and music – and also directs) to mount a show for the Citadel. Dipping back into the gothic canon that so intrigues him, Christenson came up with Hunchback, based on the Victor Hugo novel. The two hoped that combining the Citadel’s formidable development apparatus and Christenson’s stylized flair for the dramatic would result in something quite unique. The result was a grand critical and box office triumph. For this go-round Christenson abandons his beloved gothic tales for a uniquely Canadian one – the story of the Black Donnellys who were massacred by a still unknown posse in Middlesex County in Ontario in 1880. The story is complex, dark and a perfect fit for the two companies. The world premiere of Vigilante opens in the Maclab Theatre in March. Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia is this year’s offering from the Citadel/ Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Previous works

include Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, and Romeo and Juliet, and since it is to be directed by Tom Wood, it’s a sure sign this version of Arcadia will continue to burnish the play’s distinguished reputation. Arcadia is a curious hybrid. It’s a comedy and a mystery. A review in the New York Times noted that it was about “the unquenchable human urge to acquire knowledge, whether carnal, mathematical, historical or metaphysical.” MAR 21 - APR 12, 2015

Avenue Q is something else. Imagine Jim Henson’s lovable sock muppets taking on such issues as homosexuality, marriage, racism, love – and the inability of the overeducated to find a job. Avenue Q opened Off-Broadway in 2003 and received glowing reviews. It then moved to Broadway, then England, and continued its naughty ways to theatre stages all over the world. And when the idea began to seem a bit weary – circumstances caught up with it all over again and its themes are as relevant today as they were over a decade ago. Billed as a musical for grown-ups, all you have to bring, says Bob, is “an open mind and a sense of humour.” The potty-mouthed puppets open April 25.

And yes, A Christmas Carol will be back in its 15th incarnation. Christmas will begin for many Edmontonians on November 29th when previews begin. Returning to The Club for a moment, the season next year also includes a number of what are called add-ons – which are not part of the mainstage season. As promised last year during his astonishing 7 week run with his Daisy Theatre, master puppeteer Ronnie Burkett will be back. Ronnie is a master improv artist and very funny fellow. After taking on such subjects as AIDS, the Holocaust, and the end of the world, Ronnie has taken to staging a puppet cabaret which offers some serious views of the modern world – as well as inspired (and often raunchy) nonsensical ones. October 15 in The Club. Raoul Bhaneja is one of Canada’s busiest actors, appearing on stages, in movies and on many television shows. He also is an extraordinary blues guitar picker and singer. The Maclab Theatre, with its thrust stage sticking out into the audience, is one of the most interesting and challenging spaces at the Citadel. Has the Citadel got a show for you in that space in February when they turn it into an NHL rink. Theo Fleury was a little guy from Oxbow, Saskatchewan who, against all odds, went on to forge a long and turbulent career in the NHL. He also battled a drug addiction that finally ended his career. In 2009, he co-wrote a biography called Playing With Fire which became a best seller. The book also exposed the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of one of his coaches. Fleury (and co-writer Kirstie McLellan Day) spun that off into a very successful one-man show featuring Vancouver actor Shaun Smyth. Director Ron Jenkins put Smyth on skates – real skates – for the whole show and used some kind of plastic surface that completely apes the properties of real ice – right down to the spray of snow when the performer brakes. The show reaches far beyond Jenkins’ remarkable production techniques to dramatically capture the life of one of our most colourful citizens. We’ll leave you with a few words from Bob Baker. Baker has noted that the outside facade of the Citadel, although handsome, says little of what is going on inside the theatre. In 1902, the New York Evening Telegram coined the term “The Great White Way” when the area around Times Square became the first major theatre district to bath itself in light and since then the practice has spread all over the world. Says Baker, “We have something in the works for our 50th anniversary (next year) that will help a lot. We have no discernible front door. There are four doors to the street but none of them feel like an entry. So, on the corner of Winston Churchill Square, there will be a great entry that will draw people in and a state of the art digital marquee that will help light up the Square and enhance our thriving downtown core.”

oulpepper, Canada’s largest urban theatre, is an artist-centred company that celebrates the stories that move us and the artists who tell them. Soulpepper presents vital Canadian interpretations of the classics and commissions, translates, and develops new work, creating a home for a diverse array of artistic expression across disciplines. We share our work through a variety of platforms, engaging audiences, inspiring youth in our city, and training the next generation of theatre artists. Tonight’s playwright, director, and designers are all graduates of the Soulpepper Academy. From its earliest beginnings, Soulpepper has implemented new ways of sharing its stories with its community. dynamic programming, we are thankful to be so graciously welcomed to Edmonton by Citadel Theatre, as part of our national tour. We are thrilled to share Kim’s Convenience with you, in your city. Our “On the Road” mission represents an opportunity to give a broader showcase of our talented ensemble, strengthen partnerships with great companies, and build new relationships with audiences. Kim’s Convenience is a wonderful example of the types of original works and signature Soulpepper pieces that you will hopefully be able to experience on a more regular basis.
