Brighton is looking a little tatty nowadays. Once, this English south coast seaside town was the centre of boisterous gaiety and fun – with piers, trams, fish and chip shops and theatre. It was just a short day trip from London and became famous as the destination for “bank holidays” when many Londoners fled the grimy city for a day on the beach and a bit of entertainment. Many in England remember the town’s glory days when low comics like Norman Wisdom, George Formby and Jimmy Edwards would attract large crowds of merrymakers. One of those who remembered was Nicholas Hytner, the revered English director of Britain’s National Theatre and creator of such hits as Miss Saigon and The History Boys. In 2011, Hytner was facing a “very serious – rather grim” season at the National and went looking for something to lighten the load. He remembered having a lot of fun in a high school production of Carlo Goldoni’s 1743 farce, A Servant of Two Masters. Also, he had in mind a show featuring James Corden, the “funny fat kid” from his hit production of The History Boys. After that show died its natural death, Corden went on to become a frenetic, knock-about television comic – sort of a limey version of Robin Williams. (Just a month ago, Corden was named to replace Craig Ferguson on CBS’ The Late Late Show.) In fact, the inspiration for One Man, Two Guvnors, the next Mainstage production at the Citadel, goes all the way back to that scandalous ancient Greek playwright, Aristophanes, and its lineage

can be followed through the commedia dell’arte of 16th century Italy to comic shows such as A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum today. Hytner hired seasoned comic writer Richard Bean to write a treatment. Bean dipped his pen deep into the Aristophanic/ Goldonic inkwell and a very funny show spilled out. The production team decided to set it in the Brighton of the early 1960’s so they could recapture that time when the tourist destination was beginning to go into decline. In their version, there are gangsters and con men on every corner. Our hapless hero, one Francis Henshall, is an ingenious, but not overly bright, young man who has to live off his wits and finds himself working for two gangsters. The two are sworn enemies and if Francis is ever found out – the results will be dire. The setting may be different but you don’t have to look very hard to find Goldoni’s parade of fools, lovers, clowns, curvacious maidens, scary evil doers and pompous asses. Hytner hired a Skiffle Band, known for their renditions of old time music hall ditties like My Old Man’s a Dustman, to set the mood and proceeded to offer the result to British theatre goers. It set off a firestorm. The canny Hytner/Corden/Bean creative team fused elements of Benny Hill, music hall, slapstick comedy, pratfalls and a leering bawdiness combined with a bumbling innocence. Reviewers fell all over each other to find glowing adjectives – ranging from the London Sun’s decorous, “A proper old-fashioned giggle” to a New York reviewer who suggested that he really needed a diaper to get through the evening. THE DAISY THEATRE 27
“Comedy is really hard. There’s a right and wrong to it.” got an across the board “Five Stars” from all the major London newspapers. Audiences responded in kind, turning the show into a huge hit in London (and New York, Hong Kong, Australia etc. etc.). And so, One Man, Two Guvnors comes to the Citadel. It’s not that the venerable theatre isn’t used to convulsing audiences. Just to choose a couple of gut-busting shows in recent years, you might remember Spamalot and Private Lives. Those shows shared some common elements – the crack production team at the theatre, director Bob Baker and chameleon-like leading man, John Ullyatt. Other local performers in this cast include Julien Arnold, Andrew MacDonald-Smith, Mat Busby, Glenn Nelson, Cole Humeny and Jesse Gervais. As this goes to publication, rehearsals have yet to begin but one can imagine with this lot, Baker’s major task will be in keeping them from devouring Cory Sincennes’ sets. “It’s a large show and you have to have a big venue to present it. There are 12 people in the cast – and a band (The Be Arthurs),” observes Baker on directing the comedy smash. “You have to be pretty efficient with your comedy chops. Most of us have a long history with

physical comedy but we are bringing in Jonathan Purvis (the acrobatic Puck in the recent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream), improvisation consultant Kory Mathewson (Rapid Fire Theatre), and choreographer Christine Bandelow (It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Superman! and 9 to 5) to help out with the musical bits. It’s a very specific kind of humour much like Spamalot. You can concentrate on the really broad humour and the whole production will fall flat – it’s so outrageous and farcical, or you can humanize it and still be really funny. Even funnier. Comedy is really hard. There’s a right and wrong to it. If the actors are aware that they are being funny – it can be awful.” Like Nicholas Hytner, Baker has his own warm memories of working with the Goldoni. Early in his Citadel career Baker directed Tom Wood’s adaptation of the farce. “The original is ripe for interpretation. Tom set his story in the Klondike Goldrush. Many memories come rushing back. Larry Yachimec singing on the bar as ‘The Lady Known as Lou.’ John Ullyatt as a mountie disguised as a moose (and a Christmas tree). Ashley Wright, Jan Alexandra Smith and John Kirkpatrick being hosed down at intermission after being drenched in an all-out food fight.” When One Man, Two Guvnors opened in New York, lead actor James Corden expressed surprise at how the New York audiences reacted so hilariously to the obvious British references in the script. He put it down to British audiences being so used to that kind of

“Comedy is almost a science – one must experiment before identifying what needs to be discarded and what needs to be strictly choreographed.” humour that, although they laughed, it wasn’t the deep down, bladder-busting guffaws that the often jaded New York audiences launched in waves. He figured the Americans were hearing that kind of humour for the first time. Observes Baker, “The play has been written for a specific time and place, so we will be honouring that. Actually, the script we are required to use is the post-Broadway script. The jokes are better for the judicious edits.” There are moments in the production when the script seems to be thrown out the window and the cast grabs the moment and runs with it. There should be lots of opportunity for Ullyatt and company to spread their comic wings and fly. Surprisingly, on the old theatre adage that the best ad-lib is a written ad-lib, One Man, Two Guvnors is a lot more precise and scripted than it appears to be. Even while playing on Broadway, Bean checked the nightly reports to make sure that the carefully timed hour and 16 minutes of the first half didn’t balloon into an hour and 45 minute ad-libathon. When the cast came up with an inspired bit of nonsense, it was immediately put in the script. Corden maintains that the show is different every night but Bean observes, “We did a fair amount of work in rehearsal. It’s quite a structured piece, and in that sense, while we like people to imagine there’s a lot of improvisation involved, there’s a lot less than you think.” Says Baker, “Comedy is almost a science – one must experiment before identifying what needs to be discarded and what needs to be strictly choreographed. There are certain boundaries and they need constant monitoring.” However it gets to the stage, Citadel patrons should be warned. Get ready! A comic tsunami is on its way to Edmonton. Previews for One Man, Two Guvnors begin October 25 on the Shoctor stage.
