foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Except Mimi. Shed a tear for poor Mimi. Here she is in a bistro staring sadly at her lonely glass of wine. She’s on a blind date but has been stood up. Mimi is a clown with red nose, lips and matching red dress. And with the guilelessness and innocence that only a clown can muster, she looks hopefully around for a companion for the evening. Mimi’s search for love has been turned into Blind Date, a showbusiness phenomenon for the multi-talented Calgarian, Rebecca Northan. Back in 2007, Rebecca was approached to write and perform a piece for a show sponsored by Toronto’s Harbourfront Theatre. The performance was to be housed in a spiegeltent – spiegeltent being a circus-style entertainment for adults and performed, well, in a tent. On the phone from Denver where she is performing her creation, Northan chuckles, “They didn’t have any clowns and I thought, ‘You can’t have a circus without clowns.’ I had never done a clown show before but the idea just popped into my mind.” So, she and husband, Bruce Horak, created Mimi. (It’s not the first show the two had created – they are probably best known out here for the huge Fringe hit This is Cancer that played to full audiences for the last two years.)

‘I wonder what woy talk? if I let the gu me to If we took the ti get to know

him?’

24 THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Mimi was an immediate success. The two decided they were on to something and took it to that long-time advocate of improv theatre, Calgary’s Loose Moose company, to develop a full-length version of the original. It was where, at a very young age, Rebecca had begun her career.

And what a career it’s been. “I’m an A.D.D. Performer,” she laughs. Over the years, she has been nominated

“They stand behind the curtain and listen to what’s going on on stage – and then they

improvise accordingly. ...” for a Gemini Award for Best Ensemble Comedy, appeared in Montreal’s “Just for Laughs” Comedy Festival, performed in several feature films (including one with Dustin Hoffman) and innumerable television series. “My resume makes me look like a schizophrenic person. It’s, like, there are four careers here. I’m directing. I’m writing. I’m doing Shakespeare and Ibsen. I’ve even been to Bosnia to entertain the troops.” In Blind Date, Mimi ventures into the audience and selects the lucky man who is to be her companion for the evening. (Or perhaps for the rest of her life – who knows?) “In the 10 minute piece, I did all the talking but I thought, ‘I wonder what would happen if I let the guy talk? If we took the time to get to know him?’ I quickly realized that wearing the clown nose gave me permission to be playful and push the envelope. And it gives the date permission to be playful and kind of lets both of us off the hook. There is always the element that we are just playing up there so that anything that happens is just for fun.” How’s that for high wire improv? But Northan seems to have developed a bullet-proof format. First, she and her crew circulate. “From the moment the audience arrives, we try to create a French cafe cocktail hour. The backstage guys flirt with the ladies and we encourage everyone to let down their hair. We get a real sense of who is in the audience.” Later, when the show begins, Northan chooses a fellow they have picked out. She maintains that, so far, she’s never had a dud. “It’s like an oddly paced interview show. I bring the guy on stage, sit him down, and like any blind date, you say, ‘Well, tell me about yourself. I really

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean want to get to know you.’ If the guy is willing to show himself and his personality, I have the privilege (along with 200 or so people in the audience) of falling in love with him.” Blind Date is essentially a one-woman show but she travels with a couple of, what she calls, “sceneographers,” as well as a truckload of generic furniture and a sound man who is able to create musical and sound effect cues instantly. “They stand behind the curtain and listen to what’s going on on stage – and then they improvise accordingly. That may include becoming characters on stage or providing instant sets. So Mimi and friend can visit a cabaret, go to her apartment, sit in a park or, she remembers, “One night, my date said, ‘I bought two tickets to Maui as a surprise for Mimi.’ The rol t n o c o n crew was tearing around backstage trying e v a eh to find something that could create Maui on n e n happ stage. Somehow they came up with a beach over what ca blanket, a couple of trees and a picnic basket.” d that’s the

One of her favourites was when things were spiralling out of control and she suggested a time out. “Like in soccer when they take a break and go to the of it. ...” bench and get some coaching?” asked her date. “Yes,” said Mimi, not sure of just what the soccer protocol was. “Will there be orange slices?” he asked. “Apparently in soccer games,” observes Northan, “players get orange slices for rehydration when they go to the bench.” While Mimi talked to her companion on stage, one of her sceneographers grabbed his wallet, ran down the street in New York to the local grocery store, bought a bag of oranges, ran back, cut them up and appeared on stage with a tray full of orange slices before the scene was over. “We have no control over what can happen and that’s the delight of it. Sometimes, something magical happens. I get goose bumps.” In fact, sometimes the crew reacts so quickly,

“The thing that is weird about the clown nose, it brings all the best of me to the surface too. ...” that some audience members get the feeling the guy is a plant. “Not so,” protests Northan. “We just go by the primary improv directive, ‘No matter who you are standing with on stage, it is your job to make them look good.’ And so you get to see this nervous guy who is plucked out of the audience transition into a romantic hero. Because Blind Date comes from the audience the level of empathy and direct connection to the audience is visceral. People squirm in their seats and they clap – they cheer him on. They really care about him. I thought, ‘Oh my gawd, if I could only get the audience to care that much about Hamlet, I’d be hailed as the greatest director in the world.’’’ She also finds Mimi, the clown, something of a revelation for her personally. “The thing that is weird about the clown nose, it brings all the best of me to the surface too. In a way, I’m better as Mimi than I am as Rebecca. More generous. More open.” So Northan had this hit on her hands but had no idea what clowns were and how they worked. Her only experience was seeing horror clowns Mump & Smoot on stage in Calgary. “I was so

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean happy I had discovered the naked humanity of a clown but I had no idea of where it came from. So I went looking for a clown class.” She found the best. She took classes with Karen Hines (the apocalyptic clown, Pochsy/director: Mump and Smoot), Mike Kennard (Mump) and John Turner (Smoot).

rk burbled New Yo Magazine.

Blind Date was a big hit with Toronto audiences. The success (and a couple of phone calls) attracted a New York producer. “It is so surreal the way this business works,” she told a Toronto interviewer. “I selfproduced this little show for $2000 two years ago and now it’s opening Off-Broadway.” “This is a “Blind Date” you’ll actually enjoy,” burbled New York Magazine. AM New York raved, “a terrifically funny evening.” The New York Post hailed Northan as “bright and attractive.” And how are the notoriously unimpressed Big Apple audiences reacting? “I feel that Canadians are quicker to make fun and laugh at themselves. It takes me about five minutes longer in New York.” Mimi, the Parisienne lost soul, is prepared to take over the world. There will be a number of companies (and individuals) presenting the show on the road. There’ll be no more lonely nights for Mimi.

Blind Date opens in the Rice Theatre of the Citadel on January 28th.
