STUDENTS CLUB We are thrilled to welcome back our 1000 Students Club Members as they prepare to enjoy Venus in Fur, the first Citadel Theatre main stage show of the New Year. The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students are invited to stay for a talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to tonight’s performance, the Students Club was joined by graduates from the University of Alberta’s 2014 Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting Program. Recently Oscar and Andrea were seen onstage in A Christmas Carol, Merran performed in The Shakespeare Company’s Othello, and Neil appeared in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in Rosebud, Alberta. Our special guests Merran Carr-Wiggin Neil Kuefler shared their experiences as young professionals, and led a short workshop on the fundamentals of acting. If you would like to become part of Students Club, or require more information about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales at (780) 428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please email Shirley at groupsales@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

How long have you been attending productions at the Citadel Theatre? We moved to Edmonton in 1964, and became Citadel subscribers shortly after the theatre opened in 1965. We remember the old Citadel building on 102 Street. We are “seasoned subscribers.”

Why do you choose to donate to the Citadel? The Citadel has had a good “track record” of not only presenting first quality productions, but has also demonstrated sound financial stewardship of its resources. Management has been very diligent in pursuing grant opportunities to enable excellent programming and facilities.

Has donating to the Citadel changed or impacted your perspective on the Arts? We realize that a community theatre needs community support. The Citadel presents more than just play production. The encouragement and development of theatre skills for young people as demonstrated through the Foote School and the ongoing enrichment for emerging theatre personnel as supported by the Robbins Academy are just two components of the Citadel’s mandate that ensure continuing quality production. 20 venus in fur

Do you think the Arts are an integral part of a thriving community? Can we imagine a city where every arts endeavor was discontinued even for a day? No music, no theatre, no visual arts experiences? That is not a living community…that is just existing. It is what makes a vibrant community, a special feature to define our city as a good place to be.

Of all the productions you have seen, which has been your favourite and why? Both productions of Of Mice and Men stand out…the interaction of two individuals, also the spectacle of Equus, the cutting edge of Angels in America. We always enjoyed the edginess of the Rice productions.

Which production are you looking forward to this season? The season is now well on its way but we are looking forward to Venus in Fur. We thoroughly enjoyed One Man, Two Guvnors. How could you not appreciate John Ullyatt’s theatrical skill in that role?

About the

Play

Venus in Fur was inspired by the 1870 novel Venus in Furs by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the inspiration for the term Masochism. In the novel, an anonymous narrator discloses his feelings to a friend, who suggests that reading Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man will end the narrator’s torment. The fictional Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man conveys the story of a man who, after becoming obsessed with a woman, offers to act as her slave. Venus in Furs is an early example of sadomasochism in writing and highlights the figure of the dominant female. David Ives’ Venus in Fur is an exciting exploration of gender roles and sexuality, in which desire twists and turns in on itself, divulging a disconcerting look at the art of acting — onstage and off. This sexual hither and thither about power and powerlessness, imagination versus reality, is played out by two contemporary characters. Thomas is a playwright who has been painstakingly unsuccessful at unearthing the right actress during auditions for his adaptation of Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs. Low and behold, in walks Vanda, a disheveled yet brazen siren with her own agenda. Interested in watching herself perform; she breaks character purely for the pleasure of going back to it. After convincing Thomas to read through his play with her, slowly, she becomes the dominatrix that Thomas didn’t even know he needed. Venus in Fur was the winner of the 2014 Dora Award (35th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, Toronto): Audience Choice Award for favourite production (Canadian Stage). It was the most produced play in the United States in the 2013-14 seasons, with a total of 22 productions. It received two Tony award nominations, one for Best Play, after opening on Broadway in November, 2011. In 2013, Roman Polanski directed a French drama film version of Venus in Fur. The film premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, and in January of 2014 the film received five nominations at the 39th César Awards, winning for Best Director. venus in fur 27

Notes

Venus in Fur puts a dark, deceptive, and funny twist on a well-known genre – the “play within a play.” While many plays in this genre are mired in obscure jokes about “theatre folk,” with Venus in Fur David Ives creates two brilliantly original characters with whom we can all identify…whether or not we like to admit it. It is my great pleasure to work with two actors who as mid-career artists participated in the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. I am also thrilled to work with one of our two intern directors for this year’s Program, Elizabeth Hobbs. That they are all Edmontonians and graduates of the University of Alberta is another tribute to the depth of creative talent fostered in our city, and of whom we can all be proud. James MacDonald

There is a heart-breaking image in Theo Fleury’s best-selling autobiography, Playing With Fire. It is a picture of innocence corrupted that began in Russell, Saskatchewan where a five year old kid finds escape from an unhappy home on evenings when he would throw his rusty skates over his shoulder, pick up his broken hockey stick and walk down the road to the outdoor rink. Three hours later they had to force him to go home. Ahead lies a harsh life of sexual abuse, an against-all-odds rise in the toughest of games and a precipitous fall from grace fired by drugs and booze leading to that suicidal moment when, standing alone amidst the ruins of his life – he puts a gun in his mouth... Theoren Fleury’s story is a familiar tale to anyone who has heard the interviews, read his best-selling book or seen the television documentary. A feisty, tough little guy, the kid forges through the juniors and the minor leagues. The Flames pick him up and he is subsequently traded to New York, Colorado and Chicago. At only five feet six inches, he plays hard and is a driving force in winning the World Junior Championships, Stanley Cup, Canada Cup and Olympic gold. He scored 450 career goals. Before he flamed out, he played in the NHL for 16 years. As a teenager, Fleury had little in the way of adult role models. His dad was an alcoholic and his mother bed-ridden and hooked on prescription drugs. That was when he was found by a true monster – Graham James. He was only 13 when James, recognizing a potential

“My presence kept the bad news on the front of the sports pages. Hockey wants to be known as the school’s good looking, clean-cut jock.” victim, recruited Fleury from his minor hockey team in Russell. What followed was years of sexual abuse. Fleury writes in Playing With Fire, “The direct result of my being abused was that I became a raging, alcoholic lunatic. At a time when he was the most influential adult in my life he destroyed my belief system.” Even when he was at the top of his game, something was obviously wrong with Theo Fleury. He was prone to sudden acts of violence. There were rumours of cocaine, gambling, alcohol and wild nights of carousing. He observes that he was treated as “meat” in the NHL. He gave many “dirty” drug tests, substituting his kid’s urine or even Gatorade in the cup. The results, he charges, were ignored by the league. Even the substance abuse programs they put him on were designed to get him back into the line-up and not for any long-lasting solution. And then, when he just couldn’t take it any longer, he walked away from it all. “There were a lot of guys like me in the game, but they didn’t want anyone to know that. My presence kept the bad news on the front of the sports pages. Hockey wants to be known as the school’s good looking, clean-cut jock.”

“It was remarkable - a two year roller-coaster ride,” she said. “We spent hours and hours talking. And there was a tremendous amount of research. He had only been sober a couple of years and so his memory wasn’t what it is today. And it was really tough for him to relive many of those moments.” It was fellow player (and victim) Sheldon Kennedy who came out first, accusing James of abuse. There were rumours of another victim. It was, of course, Fleury. The player kept his silence thinking that the revelations would end what was left of his career. And then, one day, he was playing golf with Calgary broadcaster Larry Day and told him that he was thinking of writing a book but needed a co-writer. Said Day, “Well, my wife’s a writer. You should meet.” Kirstie McLellan Day, a one-time private investigator, was indeed a writer, having penned and produced many documentaries while spending years on the junket circuit interviewing movie stars. She has co-written books about hockey greats including bestsellers with Bob Probert and Ron MacLean. In a feature interview in Maclean’s Magazine, she was dubbed “Canada’s Ice Queen.” Kirstie and Theo met and immediately established a trusting relationship. She told the player that he would have to be straight up with her and hold nothing back. He agreed. “It was remarkable – a two year roller-coaster ride,” she said. “We spent hours and hours talking. of research. He had only been sober a couple of years and so his memory wasn’t what it is today. And it was really tough for him to relive many of those moments.” For the first time, Fleury talked in graphic and agonizing detail about the abuse. The book became a best-seller and Fleury, instead of finding the career-ending ridicule he feared, found sympathy and support. He overcame his addictions to become a businessman – marketing his own brand of clothing. Today, he is a renowned public speaker and fearless champion of, and spokesman for, abused kids all over the country. James was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The lenient sentence brought on public outrage and in 2012, he was sentenced to an additional 3 years. One night in New York, Kirstie and Larry attended Carrie Fisher’s one-woman show, Wishful Drinking, when it suddenly struck her that if any individual had a story to tell, it was Theo Fleury. With her subject’s full cooperation, she set about writing a play. “I was very cocky,” she admits today. “I thought all I had to do was turn the book into a play. Like Samantha, I’d just twitch my nose and there it would be. Boy, was I wrong! I had all these ideas about monologues in hotel and locker rooms and things like that. So I took it to (Calgary’s) Alberta Theatre Projects and quickly learned there is a huge structural difference between a book and a play. They sat me down and spent many hours helping me develop something that would work on a stage.”

The experience is priceless. Simply pay what you can. We’re proud to partner with the Citadel Theatre to ensure more Albertans enjoy the theatre through Servus Pay What You Can Sundays.

“I tried to nail his fire, fearlessness and frequently insulting demeanour to bruisers who towered over him and often outweighed him by more than 90 pounds.”

Another big influence was director Ron Jenkins. Ron is Edmonton-based and one of Canada’s busiest freelance directors (and winner of an astonishing ten Sterling Awards over the years). Ron took one look at the proposed play and threw out any thought of hotel rooms. He put it on ice. Apparently there is a synthetic ice surface out there that would allow actor Shaun Smyth to skate for most of the show. Under Jenkins’ concept even the ice takes on a personality, morphing from small town prairie rink to NHL arena, complete with Jumbotron. Remembers Smyth, “(ATP Producer) Dianne (Goodman) phoned me up and asked me if I skated and how was my hockey? I said, ‘Well I’ve never really played much but I’m willing to work my ass off. I have a year and I’ll skate like a professional hockey player on opening night.’” He got the job and spent the summer on roller blades skating around concrete playgrounds with kids following him – laughing. “They’d ask, ‘How come you’re not working mister?’ and I’d growl at them, ‘I am working. Don’t bother me.’” Fleury would drop in from time to time to talk about what superstitions drove him – such as always having the same meal before a game. He outlined his skating style-even down to how he taped his socks and laced his skates. Smyth observes, “Fleury learned from a very young age that if he acted a little crazy people gave him space. I tried to nail his fire, fearlessness and frequently insulting demeanour to bruisers who towered over him and often outweighed him by more than 90 pounds.” The resulting show, in a tribute to Smyth’s own determination, has him on stage, solo, often skating furiously while holding audiences rapt with an intensely dramatic story. Whether you’re a hockey fan or not, Playing With Fire is a powerful, often funny – even poignant evening of theatre. Fleury is a natural storyteller. He lived the life and his anecdotes of the players, coaches and contracts, the high-jinks and locker room horseplay are hilarious. McLellan Day admits to tears in her eyes on opening night of the Calgary ATP production two years ago. “I wrote the book and the documentary but the play brought a whole new dimension to the story. I found so many things that were new to me. The play really goes deep. It was an emotional experience I’ll never forget.” A reaction repeated by the critics and sold-out audience who were lucky enough to be there that night. Playing With Fire: The Theo Fleury Story previews January 28 and plays through February 15 in the Maclab Theatre.

“The play really goes deep. It was an emotional experience I’ll never forget.”
