DIRECTOR’S

NOTES

G

reat theatre always succeeds by illuminating the human condition – by holding up a mirror to our lives, and challenging our preconceptions about ourselves, our relationships, and our life choices. That this exploration often takes the form of tragedy is, I suppose, indicative of our human need for catharsis. Yet the tragic exists on a razor’s edge with the comic – and life can be absurd, whimsical, farcical, and darkly funny. Yasmina Reza understands that lurking beneath the veneer of polite society are thoughts and feelings to which we rarely give voice – at least not without provocation. She also recognizes that the people we love the most – spouses, children, parents – are the ones who drive us most quickly to the brink. There is fun to be had in looking at our foibles, our pretensions, and our obsessions. This play gives us all of that…but in the end, it gives us much more, providing as profound an insight into the human condition as a great tragedy. Enjoy. James MacDonald

It ran at the late, lamented Varscona movie theatre longer than any cinema in the British empire. When Bob Baker included Tom Wood’s production in his 2004 season, it was met with glowing reviews and became one of the most successful shows in Baker’s tenure as Artistic Director. For those who have never seen the Citadel’s production, and for those who want to experience its warmth, humour and captivating characters again, it will be back to end the Citadel’s season this year. “There is really nothing like The Sound of Music,” enthuses Baker, who takes over the reins as director this time. “Rodgers and Hammerstein weren’t afraid of addressing social issues and were exceptional at telling a great story.” In the Citadel’s 2004 production, Wood went back to the original concept of the musical, written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, which gave considerably more weight to the Nazi threat than you see in the movie. As he has done in numerous adaptations (A Christmas Carol/Vanya) and directorial stints at the Citadel, he demanded that, musical or not, the characters be more than stock images. He wanted real ‘flesh and blood’ people. One of the problems is that the show is front-loaded with all the best songs – “The Sound of Music,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-re-me” and “My Favourite Things,”are all in the first act. The Citadel production concentrated on the very real dangers the family faced, providing a stronger second act than we are used

to. Captain von Trapp’s singing of “Edelweiss” (and no, its not an old Austrian folk song – it was written for the show by Rodgers and Hammerstein) took on a whole new meaning as a brave and final act of love for his country hurled into the teeth of the oppressors. As the family “climb ev’ry mountain...”, there was the feeling that what they were escaping could very well have been a concentration camp. Rodgers and Hammerstein had a long and illustrious Broadway career, penning such perennial hits as Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific and The King and I. Hammerstein was the lyricist – he always wrote the words first to which, later, Rodgers added the music. The man who was able to write about “bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens” was dying of stomach cancer when he wrote those words. He died on August 23, 1960, living to see the success of the Broadway show but not the movie. The film made $79 million on a budget of $8.2 million, thus rescuing 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy after the debacle of Cleopatra. Far be it for me to let any air out of a beloved tale of heroism and familial love, but the story just did not happen that way. Shortly before her death on March 28, 1987, I had the great pleasure of spending an afternoon with Countess Maria von Trapp. She looked like neither Mary Martin nor Julie Andrews but she certainly generated the kind of simple warmth that so endeared her, first to the children, and then to the Baron himself. Despite their playing fast and loose with the facts, she loved the Broadway show and the movie – in fact, she appeared in the film. If you look closely at the scene where Julie Andrews trips gaily through a brick archway singing, “I Have Confidence...” you’ll see two Austrian women dressed in peasant garb. One of them is Maria von Trapp. Remember those towering Alps with the von Trapps stoutly climbing complete with teeny backpacks and lederhosen? Well, said the Baroness, “We didn’t escape to Switzerland...” (which was about a hundred miles South West of their suburban home in Austria).

GOD OF CARNAGE 29

“Didn’t they bother to look at a map?” inquired the world’s most famous ex-nun. “Italy was about thirty miles due South and that’s where we went.” Running from Hitler’s frying pan to Mussolini’s fire doesn’t sound like “finding your dream” but it was the first step in getting the family to where they wanted to go – the United States. And, they went by train. No snow covered mountains, no lederhosen and hearty bursting into song. Maria did express some unhappiness with the way the Captain was portrayed in the film. “He was not stern and cold prior to my arrival but a loving father,” she said. The image was not helped by Christopher Plummer’s wooden performance. As he is today, he was then regarded as one of the great interpreters of Shakespeare and considered doing a musical as slumming. All it takes is one look at his glum performance to realize how much he hated it. He called the movie “The Sound of Mucus.” Many years later he went to a birthday party where the film was played and, as he points out in his very readable autobiography, he fell in love with it. And no, he did not do his own singing – but then, neither did the kids. The director of the film was to have been Hollywood icon William Wyler (Wuthering Heights, Ben Hur) but he hated the show and wanted tanks and other examples of Nazi might. Robert Wise was then chosen as director. He wanted Yul Brunner as the Baron. Sean Connery and Richard Burton were also considered. Doris Day was up for the role of Maria. The opening scene with Andrews on a hill top in full voice singing “The Hills are Alive...” remains one of cinema’s most exuberant moments. It was not the way Wise had seen it. He wanted a meadow with tall waving grass – which would ripple in the wind like a Saskatchewan wheat field. But the accommodating farmer who owned the field wanted it to appear neat so he cut the grass. Wise went ahead and shot anyway. It was also freezing cold and Andrews had a hard time to keep from shivering on camera.

When the helicopter swooshed in for a close-up, the downdraft knocked her over. The original idea for the show, based on an obscure German film on the von Trapps, was brought to Mary Martin and her producer/husband Richard Halliday. The concept was for a straight play with the occasional Austrian folk song added to give Martin a chance to sing. Well, maybe they could add one song – and they could get their friends Richard and Oscar to write it. Rodgers and Hammerstein declined to write the song but offered to write an entire musical. The Hallidays thought that was a great idea and scurried around gathering up the rights. Julie Andrews made $225,000 for her starring role in the movie – the Hallidays made millions for the rights. Maria had earlier sold her own story to a German producer for $10,000. The unscrupulous fellow slipped in a clause that gave him the rights to any subsequent films that might be made. Later Hollywood gave Maria 3/8 of 1 percent of the movie. She was very grateful. When the von Trapps arrived in America in 1942, they were unknown displaced persons from a war-ravaged Europe. For years they toured the world singing their songs to appreciative audiences. They opened a successful skiing lodge in Vermont in 1950. The Baron died in 1947.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Bob Baker has assembled an impressive cast for this new production that includes Réjean Cournoyer (At the Citadel: Sweeney Todd, Beauty and the Beast) as the Baron and Josée Boudreau (At the Citadel: Little Women, Beauty and the Beast) as Maria and featuring such well-known local performers as Susan Gilmour, Jeremy Baumung, Jocelyn Ahlf and Elena Porter. It will be interesting to see what he does with the beloved musical. I asked Maria how she felt about her life since her dramatic escape from Austria. She told me, “I feel I have climbed all those mountains and now I’m living my life in the broad, sunshine filled valleys on the other side.” Bob Baker’s production of The Sound of Music opens on the Shoctor Stage of the Citadel on April 21.

A History of

Carnage Le Dieu du Carnage was written by Parisian playwright Yasmina

Reza in 2006, known to Citadel fans as the playwright for our 2001 production of “Art”. After a number of successful productions in French, the play was translated to English by Christopher Hampton in 2008 for a West End run in London. The play came to Broadway in 2009, where it was an instant success. All four actors (Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden) were nominated for Tony awards for their performances. The play won Tony awards that year for Best Play, Best Leading Actress in a Play (Marcia Gay Harden) and Best Direction of a Play (Matthew Warchus, who also directed the London production). Since then, the play has been re-produced at local theatres across the globe. Our production marks the western Canadian Premiere of God of Carnage. The premise is simple – two sets of parents meet after one child assaults the other in a neighbourhood playground. They are civil and polite – on the surface… A film adaptation titled simply Carnage, directed by Roman Polanski, was released in select movie theatres worldwide late in 2011. The film was nominated for two Golden Globe awards, but we humbly submit that the live theatre experience is where this script belongs. We hope you agree. Prepare yourself.
