STUDENTS CLUB The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, and interactive presentation featuring special guests from Edmonton’s talented theatre community. Following the performance students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. The focus for Arcadia’s Students Club is Stage Management. The stage manager is responsible for the efficient organization and coordination of a theatrical production – providing practical and organizational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production process. Prior to Students Club performances of Arcadia, the students are joined by Michelle Chan, Resident Stage Manager here at the Citadel and a veteran of numerous performances over the past fifteen seasons, including more than three hundred performances of A Christmas Carol alone! Michelle introduced the students to one of the more complicated scene change sequences that she is responsible for overseeing in A Christmas Carol. The students took on the various roles of both cast and crew members and were taught their moves and the timing needed to pull off this transition. Sound interesting? To become part of next season’s Students Club, or for more information please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales at (780) 428-2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com

DONOR PROFILE Darlene Acton

How long have you been attending productions at the Citadel Theatre? I have been attending productions at the Citadel since the mid - 1970’s.

Why do you choose to donate to the Citadel? I have always considered The Citadel to be an important part of my life here in Edmonton. Attending the theatre is an activity I delight in and I’m happy to be able to support the Citadel in their creative efforts.

Of all of the productions you have seen, which has been your favourite and why?

In donating to the Citadel, I feel as though I’m a part of something bigger. I take pride in knowing that with my help the Citadel is able to accomplish their goals, and that I’m able to see world class theatre productions here in Edmonton.

It is difficult to think of any one performance that has been my absolute favourite over all those decades. What I can say is when Bob Baker came back to Edmonton as our Artistic Director, I was thrilled, having been excited about the challenging work he initiated with the Phoenix Theatre in Edmonton years before. I don’t need a ticket to NYC to see great theatre on the stage.

Do you think the Arts are an integral part of a thriving community?

Which production are you looking forward to the most in our upcoming season and why?

Yes, absolutely! I also attend performances at the ESO and the Edmonton Opera and it’s difficult to imagine not having the opportunity to do so. The arts create vibrancy in the community, especially in Edmonton; it’s one of the reasons that this city is constantly attracting new residents and visitors.

I am really looking forward to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I didn’t see it in 1965!

Has donating to the Citadel Theatre changed or impacted your perspective on the Arts?

About the

playwright Tom Stoppard Playwright Sir Tom Stoppard was born Tomás Straüssler on 3 July 1937 in Zlín, Czechoslovakia. He grew up in Singapore and India during the Second World War and moved to England in 1946 with his mother and stepfather, his own father having been killed in Singapore. Educated at schools in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, he became a journalist working for the Western Daily Press (1954-8) and the Bristol Evening World (1958-60), and became theatre critic for Scene magazine in London (1962-3). He began writing plays for radio and television, including The Dissolution of Dominic Boot (1964), A Walk on the Water, televised in 1963, and The Stand-Ins, later revised as The Real Inspector Hound (1968). Albert’s Bridge (1968) was first broadcast by BBC Radio in 1967. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1967) premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1966. The play came to the attention of Kenneth Tynan, then working for the National Theatre, and it was produced at the National in 1967 and on Broadway in 1967, winning a Tony Award for Best Play (USA) in 1968. The Real Inspector Hound was first staged in 1968, followed by productions of Albert’s Bridge and If You’re Glad I’ll Be Frank, both in 1969. His play Jumpers (1972) was staged at the National Theatre in 1972 and his adaptation of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba was first performed in the same year. Travesties (1975) was first staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1974, transferring to New York in 1975 where it won a Tony Award for Best Play. Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1976), was inspired by his friendship with Viktor Fainberg, who had been imprisoned in Czechoslovakia by the Soviets, and Stoppard began to speak out on behalf of dissidents including the Czech playwright Vaclav Havel, who had been charged with subversion. Professional Foul (1978) was written for Amnesty International’s Prisoner of Conscience Year in 1977. On the Razzle (1982), adapted from Johann Nestroy’s Einen Jux will er sich machen, was staged at the National Theatre in 1981, followed by The Real Thing (1982) in 1982. He was on the board of the National Theatre from 1989-2003. His trilogy of plays set in 19th century Russia, The Coast of Utopia (2002), was first staged at the National Theatre in 2002. Tom Stoppard was knighted in 1997. He lives in London. His latest plays are Heroes (2005), and Rock ‘n’ Roll (2006). He has written the screenplay for The Bourne Ultimatum, and a new English version of Chekov’s Ivanov (2008). Fermat’s last theorem is one of the many scientific (mathematics and physics) ideas presented in Arcadia. Septimus: “Fermat’s last theorem asserts that when x, y, and z are whole numbers each raised to the power of n, the sum of the first two can never equal the third when n is greater than 2.” At the time Tom Stoppard wrote the play and at the time of the first production in 1993 there was no proof for it. However, in 1994 the British mathematician Andrew Wiles released the first successful proof of the theorem which was published in 1995 after being peer reviewed.

ROBBINS ACADEMY The Robbins Academy Program is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. THE CITADEL/BANFF CENTRE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is an advanced creative development Program to enrich the performance skills of established theatre professionals. Conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Bob Baker, and under the guidance of Program Director James MacDonald, the Program provides a unique professional development opportunity to Canadian theatre artists.

JAMIE WILLIAMS: 2015 provides Jamie with his second opportunity to participate in the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Jamie was a participant in 2014 and performed the role of Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet. Since then Jamie has starred in A Bedfull of Foreigners as Stanley Parker at Upper Canada Playhouse; portrayed Bruno MacIntyre, the hilarious lay-about from PEI, in Lorne Elliot’s The Fixer Upper at Port Stanley Festival Theatre; and most recently, performed as the Father (the ‘Old Man’) in the now modern classic A Christmas Story at Neptune Theatre in Halifax. “The Citadel/Banff Professional Program offers actors a rare opportunity – the time, place and partners needed to practice our craft. I was a participant in 2014 and got so much out of the experience. When the opportunity arose to return this year I jumped at the chance. Within our business time is limited, rehearsal periods are so short the focus has to be on immediate product. This Program offers time to look in depth at process. Guided by an amazing faculty, our group, all at different places in our careers was able to immerse ourselves in movement, voice, monologues, scenes and singing classes. By the end of the month the growth was incredible, individually; as a group, we had built a strong and closely knit company. This program would benefit anyone in our field. If I had the chance on yearly basis I wouldn't hesitate.” JAMIE WILLIAMS

In March of 2003, a group of unmoored, raucous, singing, potty mouthed puppets descended on New York’s tiny Vineyard Theatre warbling such songs as the immortal “Schadenfreude,” “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist,” “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today” and “It Sucks to Be Me.”

There was abundant profanity, racism, homosexuality, puppet nudity and full-on puppet sex (to the strains of that classic love song “You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want (When You’re Makin’ Love).” And were the gentle New York theatre goers horrified? No, they turned out by the thousands. Avenue Q, in its various incarnations, is still generating uproarious laughter while becoming one of the longest running hits the Big Apple has ever seen. Maybe the critics sniffed? No, they loved it. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical (beating, for Pete’s sake, Wicked). Enthused the Times (echoing just about every other critic in NY), Avenue Q is ...“sassy, savvy and eminently likeable.” If you’ve seen the posters plastered all over the Citadel, yes, they do look like Sesame Street characters but no, you don’t want to bring the kids to this one. The lyrics and music for Avenue Q come from Jeff Marx (a one-time Sesame Street muppet) and Robert Lopez (who wrote the inescapable “Let It Go” for Disney’s Frozen). The book (also Tony winning) was written by Jeff Whitty. The trio call the show “a coming of age parable addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood.”

“The puppets allowed us to look at realism in a different light. We needed the allure of fantasy.”

In Sesame Street we were told that we were “special,” that we could “do anything.” But, as adults, the same kids discover that their options are limited and that they are no more “special” than anyone else. Says Andrew MacDonald-Smith, the Edmonton actor who once appeared in the Broadway production (and is featured in the upcoming Citadel remount), “There is a constant struggle in the show trying to find where young people fit in the world. Suddenly there are adult lessons we all have to learn. Sesame Street taught us that puppets can be heartfelt and sincere. In this show, they take on current issues.” Although much of the ironic humour in the show arises from its contrasts with Sesame Street, Avenue Q is at some pains to assure us that it is not associated with the Jim Henson puppet production machine – although you don’t have to look too hard to find Bert and Ernie and the Cookie Monster. The characters are young adults searching for their purpose in life and facing real world adult problems with uncertain outcomes, as opposed to the simplistic and invariably happy resolutions faced by the denizens of Sesame Street. As Marx and Lopez observed in the recent interview, “We wanted a play about normal people living in New York today. The puppets allowed us to look at realism in a different light. We needed the allure of fantasy.” And so we meet a group of characters who are living in an impoverished outer borough in New York. These downwardly mobile young people are adrift, full of self-doubt, making

mistakes and searching for meaning in their lives. Their heads are full of dreams but their wallets are empty. There’s Princeton, naive and “adorkable,” who discovers that his hard fought for B.A. in English doesn’t guarantee a job; Kate Monster, a highly motivated (and really cute) monster girl; Nicky, who plaintively sings “If You Were Gay;” Rod, who refuses to admit his homosexuality, singing about his non-existent “Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada” (he’s a Republican investment banker) and the semi-reclusive (and very hairy) Trekkie Monster – and, no, he’s not watching Star Trek on TV (his self-explanatory song is “The Internet Is For Porn”). Featured are Lucy the Slut (!) and the Bad Idea Bears – two cuddly stuffed bears who appear, like those evil devils on the shoulders of old cartoon characters, to give bad advice. For instance, they suggest to Princeton that he get drunk and commit suicide.

“At one point I stand on stage with my arm upraised and operate a sock puppet for 45 minutes.” Theatre demands “the suspension of disbelief.” Avenue Q requires a substantial blurring of the boundaries between flesh and cloth. The cast consists of two human characters and nine puppets. No attempt is made to explain the world in which puppets and humans coexist – they are just there. The puppets are animated and voiced by actor/puppeteers who

are present and remain visible throughout. But, through some mysterious theatrical alchemy, the puppet masters disappear – while still apparent on stage. To make it even more confusing the puppeteers switch puppets and characters – often in the middle of a scene. MacDonald-Smith, who is playing two roles in the Citadel production (and is billed in the program as a “puppet consultant”), relates, “I enter as Rod who is having an argument with another character (basically Bert and Ernie), and then suddenly somebody else is puppeting Rod and I re-enter as Princeton. Sometimes there are two people operating a single puppet, or the actor operating a puppet may be voicing another one.” (MacDonaldSmith has appeared in both Calgary and Vancouver productions and provided his puppet expertise for another Edmonton production a couple of years back.) “In Sesame Street you don’t see the puppeteer and maybe only two or three characters at the same time whereas Avenue Q has a large cast of characters on stage – both human and puppet. They used to say never appear on stage with a baby or an animal. You can add a puppet to that. It doesn’t take long to think of them as human.” The hand-built puppets can cost up to $10,000 apiece and are made in New York. They have to be sturdy enough to withstand 8 shows a week but light enough to be held by an actor for long periods of time. Observes MacDonald-Smith, “At one point I stand on stage with my arm upraised and operate a sock puppet for 45 minutes.”

If anyone was born to be a performer it is Ghost Lake Village’s Andrew MacDonald-Smith (Ghost Lake Village is just outside of Cochrane, Alberta). If you saw him last year in his assured Sterling Award-winning performance as Bert in Mary Poppins, it’s hard to imagine him as a shy youngster. So shy, in fact, that he loved entertaining his parents with puppets because he could hide behind the family couch with the puppets performing over the top. In later life, while pursuing a career in musical theatre in Tim Ryan’s Theatre Arts program at Grant MacEwan University, he returned to the art form with the logical thought that if you wanted a career on the stage, you had to have a lot in your theatrical bag-of-tricks. So, he created a puppet named Maurice Tipo. In November of 2005, he was idly checking out the website of Avenue Q, his favourite Broadway show, when he noticed an ad for a contest, “A One Night Stand On Avenue Q.” The prize was a free trip to New York, a night in a fancy hotel and an appearance in the show. He submitted a tentative bid and was told to make a short film with his puppet. So, with his buddies Farren Timoteo and Peter Bass, he made a 6 minute video. After a series of adventures, he ended up winning the spot. The company learned he could sing so he appeared in the opening number and later was featured in a whole scene. He was then given a seat backstage where he could watch the production unfold around him. “There’s a wall of puppets with about 45 of them strung up. Each time a puppet appears in a different outfit – it’s a whole new puppet. There’s a ‘puppet fluffer’ who ‘fluffs’ up the puppet and checks out the hair and hands it off to an actor who is rushing by to the stage. It was the most fun I’ve ever had in a theatre.” He also learned something that has stood him in good stead ever since. “I was excited. I was scared. But there is really nothing ‘different’ about it. Sure, it was an enormous theatre and insanely beautiful with impressive mechanics but theatre is theatre. Like all theatres it was messy and dirty backstage. On stage, it felt no different from appearing at the Varscona or the Citadel or the Mayfield.” Andrew MacDonald-Smith was perfect for his award-winning turn as the chimney-sweep Bert. He’s a slim, lanky 6'4" with startling blue eyes and a genial manner that translates to the stage. He has played with many Edmonton theatre companies (Mayfield/Alberta Opera/ Leave It To Jane) but is probably best known for his appearances with Stewart Lemoine’s Teatro La Quindicina. Watch for him as Princeton and Rod when the sly, cynical and irresistibly charming Avenue Q previews on the Shoctor stage on April 25.

PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is a training partnership between the Citadel Theatre and The Banff Centre

robbins academy

stamina, strength, agility of body, mind, heart

AT THE CITADEL, we do not just put on plays, we build theatre for today, tomorrow and

beyond. The Robbins Academy at the Citadel Theatre is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. Offering programs for both emerging and established theatre professionals, the Robbins Academy encompasses four specialized programs under one unique umbrella:

THE CITADEL/BANFF CENTRE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is now in its seventh year. This Program, conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Bob Baker, and under the direction of Program Director James MacDonald, provides performers a distinct alternative to other professional theatre training programs in North America. Our curriculum focuses on the development of advanced skills for professional actors and directors, properly equipping them with the necessary tools to pursue and sustain successful careers. The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program has continued to grow and thrive with the ongoing support of • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation with the stewardship of David Bentley • The RBC Foundation We would also like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of the original champions of the Program • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation • The John and Barbara Poole Family Fund • Canadian Western Bank and the Pechet Family And subsequent support from • Government of Alberta PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM With the continued commitment to produce world premières on our stages, we offer resources and professional expertise to assist playwrights in developing their work to its greatest potential. Over the last decade the Citadel has developed and produced 20 World Premieres, 14 of which have been subsequently produced elsewhere, taking the name of the Citadel and Edmonton around the world. Our audiences have not only experienced the inaugural productions of these plays but have also had the unique opportunity to participate in their development. THE CITADEL THEATRE YOUNG COMPANIES is an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. This year-long program offers specialized training in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting and Theatre Production. THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL (FTS) is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. Since 1966 we have provided year round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. Over 1,000 students annually are taught by our faculty of 25 local theatre professionals. ARCADIA 59
