STUDENTS CLUB The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, and interactive presentation featuring special guests from Edmonton’s talented theatre community. Following the performance students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. The focus for Avenue Q’s Students Club is puppetry. Puppetry is an ancient art form that likely predates actors in theatre. There are many styles and forms of puppetry, and to this day it remains a favoured means to tell a story and communicate ideas. Prior to Students Club performances, the students were joined by the multi-talented Kate Ryan, an accomplished singer, actress, teacher and director. Kate, her sister Bridget, and their mother Maralyn make up Kaybridge Productions, a performance company that specializes in puppetry. Kate provided insight into the history of puppetry, the process of creating and working with puppets, and several volunteers got the chance to handle a selection of puppets. Kate Ryan has worked in theatres across all of North America, and has been seen at the Citadel performing the role of Mrs. Cratchit in A Christmas Carol, or performing her cabaret in The Club.

Neil Graham Caesar Shoctoralli
Tell us a little about yourselves and how long have you been attending productions at the Citadel Theatre? Although Caesar and I are originally from New York, we have called Edmonton home for many years. We’ve been watching plays at the Citadel since the late seventies, except for that one year, 95 I think, when we accidentally got trapped in a toy box! What a nightmare that was, 20 years later and we still cough up little bits of Lego from time to time. Other than that we rarely miss a performance, unless of course it’s pouring rain, that stuff’s murder on felt! Why do you choose to donate to the Citadel? Well that’s a silly question! Why the heck wouldn’t we. The Citadel Theatre has been challenging and entertaining us for 50 years! You think they are able to do that just on ticket sales alone? The Citadel is committed to developing new work, developing artists, establishing creative partnerships and engaging with the community! Just look at their awesome 50th season! Without our support and that of the community this would not be the place we know and love. Do you think the Arts are an integral part of a thriving community? Absolutely, Arts are an integral part of what makes our community so special. Edmonton is on the cusp of greatness. Not that we weren’t great to begin with but there is a quiet excitement in the city 26 AVENUE Q
right now, a transformed sense of energy, confidence and anticipation for the future. We are very lucky that this city has it all, especially a vibrant cultural and Arts scene in which the Citadel plays a huge role in…..Get it, I said plays and role, pretty clever, huh? That and, without the Arts, half our family would be unemployed. Of all the productions you have seen, which has been your favourite and why? In all honesty we can’t think of a production that we did not really enjoy. Sure some have been pretty deep but it really makes you think about stuffing, I mean stuff. If we had to pick one, hmmm, Ronnie Burkett’s Daisy Theatre has always been one of our favourites! We roomed with several of the cast back in College and Ronnie is such a fantastic guy! I think he could have been a surgeon because whenever we need a little work done he’s our man. Which production are you looking forward to this season? Without a doubt, this performance! We’ll share a little secret with you. Back in the day both Caesar and I attended the Foote Theatre School with hopes of being young and upcoming actors. Then that ugly toy box incident occurred and we developed a fear of dark, small spaces so that was the end of our acting dreams. If not for that cheesy particleboard coffin, it could very well be us on that stage tonight.

The sign will be huge. A couple of stories. It will rise on the northwest corner of the Citadel building facing Sir Winston Churchill Square. A large lit marquee may not exactly mirror Times Square, but it will change the area, bringing a thrilling visual excitement to the square and giving the Citadel a stunning ability to proclaim itself to our burgeoning downtown. As part of the display, there will be a new, welcoming entrance – opening up founder Joe Shoctor’s buoyant vision of a brick and glass playhouse to the city that, for 50 years, has given it a home. Here is what the Citadel has to offer theatrically for its fiftieth birthday. And who better to lead us through the delights to come than Bob Baker who has been Artistic Director of the institution for the last sixteen years? “It’s nice to pull out the scrapbook and recognize the past,” he muses. “But it’s also great to celebrate our current activities and look ahead to the future. But, I don’t think you could ever call our work here institutionalized or stodgy. Our audiences expect high quality – and that is what we will present for our fiftieth.” The season begins in mid-September with Rick Miller’s Boom. And yes, you probably recognize the name. Rick first made his name on the Fringe circuit with MacHomer, a frenetic one-man show that revisited Macbeth as it might be imagined by the cast of The Simpsons. (Quoth Homer, “Is this a dagger I see before me – or a pizza?”). He toured that around quite a bit and then returned to the stage with another tour de force, Bigger Than Jesus, that, between laughs, presented a serious examination of Christianity. That one

won many awards and became a huge international sensation. Well, Rick is back with his biggest show yet. Boom is a spectacular, multi-media extravaganza based around Miller’s prodigious talents. It premiered in Calgary in 2014 and has played to great acclaim on main stages all over the country. It documents those years ranging from 1945 all the way to the explosion of Apollo 11. “It’s a huge performance with Miller playing all the parts and reflecting the audience’s lives back at them from the stage,” says Baker. The next show is equally big – but it will feature a large cast, a full orchestra with sets, costumes and a centuries old love story that transcends time to chart the geography of the human heart. It’s called Evangeline and it’s adapted from the famous Longfellow epic poem about the Acadian expulsion. Evangeline (the musical) is written by Edmonton favourite son, Ted Dykstra (Fire/2 Pianos 4 Hands). Getting the story to the stage of the Citadel was something of an epic in itself. For one thing, it has been Dykstra’s dream for over a decade. “There have been many iterations... many workshops over the years,” says Baker. The show will be a complete reimagining of the original which premiered in Charlottetown in 2013. Bob will direct. The set will be designed at the Citadel. The show will be cast from here and

feature performers from all over the country (including Tony Award winner Brent Carver). In scope and size it might be compared to Les Miz but Baker insists, “It is unique and not derivative of any other Broadway show.”

Joe Shoctor was a canny fellow and his choice of the first play ever to be presented by the Citadel was inspired. It was Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The contentious play had premiered on Broadway in 1962 and, with an ecstatic critical and audience reaction, was already well on its way to establish itself as a timeless classic. We were kind of a stolid lot 50 years ago and Shoctor knew that dropping the controversial play into our still waters would create a sensation. And it did. Observes Baker, “Virginia Woolf is really about people and relationships and that doesn’t date.” Jon Robin Baitz’ Other Desert Cities has been one of the most popular of seriously dramatic plays since it was launched on Broadway in 2011. In it a family of greatly differing political views gathers for Christmas in Palm Springs. Some of them haven’t seen the others for many years. Another is just out of rehab. Some are liberal and others rock-ribbed Republicans. One announces that she is writing a book about the family – a book that will tear open the deep wounds that have divided them. And, of course, there is the long suppressed family secret. Commented the Hollywood Reporter in a review “.... the balance between comedy and intense family drama is fine tuned in richly satisfying ways.”

“One of my thrills as Artistic Director is to watch adults watching their children watching one of our family shows. It happened in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. It happens every year in A Christmas Carol,” says Bob. And in the tradition of the superb productions the Citadel has given those musicals, Baker is bringing in Alice Through the Looking Glass to the Citadel. This Alice first saw life in a scrumptious production at Stratford. It then, with a different cast but the same director (Jillian Keiley), moved to the National Arts Centre. It will come to us after touching down in Winnipeg. It will be produced in Edmonton with an entirely local cast. So in February, fire up the family, corral the kids and join the Red Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Humpty Dumpty (and all the other entertaining denizens who dwell in Lewis Carroll’s demented imagination) and head for the Citadel. Many of us remember Baker’s 2004 production of West Side Story as a definitive one. “Yeah!” remembers Baker. “It was a very special production. A great team came together for that one.” Then why do it again? “Well, we were looking over past productions that everyone liked and West Side Story came up again and again. That one was a co-production

with Theatre Calgary and so we were on a schedule and just couldn’t hold it over. Many patrons were disappointed that they couldn’t see it. You can never try to recreate that same magic – but you can reinvent and discover a refreshing new kind of magic. And it will be interesting this time because it’s part of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program.” Tracey Power was a whirlwind when she attended theatre school here in the late ‘90’s. She still is and her name as director has been associated with a bewildering number of stage productions. One of her latest is Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen (described by one critic, “A raunchy, rocking out Hallelujah”). Cohen, of course, is a much recorded national icon whose simple, hypnotic melodies blend seamlessly with poetic, often cryptic lyrics. Power has taken 27 of his songs for Chelsea Hotel, inspired by an infamous hostelry where Cohen once lived in New York sharing digs with such notables as Bob Dylan, Virgil Thompson, Andy Warhol and others. The show follows “a loose poetic narrative” in which 6 performers play 15 instruments between them and sing and harmonize on all the songs. Chelsea Hotel (which is an add-on to the regular season) previews January 13 in the Maclab. Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn and Andrew Kushnir all grew up gay in Edmonton. The trio drifted to Toronto where they forged successful careers in theatre. The Edmonton connection forms a large part of the three-hander, The Gay Heritage Project (another season addon). It’s a funny, impish, highly physical and fast-paced musical review that comes from personal anecdotes and an investigation into the surprisingly rich, sometimes moving and often hilarious history of the queer culture. It was an immediate hit in Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. In February, The Gay Heritage Project comes to the Citadel’s The Club. Observes Baker, “This is a very positive upbeat show. It is not looking for acceptance. It’s not militant. It has a universal appeal and recently, with the animated conversations about gay/ straight alliances in our province, it has gained even more relevance.” And that’s the season. There’s much more going on at the Citadel as it celebrates its 50th and you are invited to check the website regularly. And, oh yes, the Citadel’s annual invocation of all things Christmas, A Christmas Carol is back with a month-long run beginning on November 28.

CITADEL VOLUNTEERS
STAFF
Message from the
artistic director,
50 years ago, Joe Shoctor, had a vision: to build a first class professional theatre in Edmonton and to nurture the arts in the heart of this city. Almost 50 years later, the Citadel is one of Canada’s leading professional theatres and a thriving cultural institution in downtown Edmonton. With the excitement of our 50th Season building, let’s take a moment to savour the Season that is about to close. So many memorable productions, performances and partnerships – Kim’s Convenience, One Man Two Guvnors, Venus in Fur, Vigilante, Arcadia, and Avenue Q, Playing with Fire, The Daisy Theatre and Life, Death and the Blues. Actors, musicians, singers, marionettes and now puppets have made our venues sizzle with laughter, tears, astonishment and applause. A Christmas Carol had its best year yet and our audiences again generously supported our collection for Edmonton’s Food Bank, bringing our total contribution over the past 14 years to $753,500. The Beyond the Stage series continues to grow in popularity and is introducing new audiences to the Citadel. The Club rocked with shows by Hawksley Workman, the Spice Girls tribute band Wannabe and the unforgettable Motown sounds of Krystle Dos Santos. The Robbins Academy is thriving with record numbers of applicants. The Citadel’s commitment to developing new work, developing artists, establishing creative partnerships and engaging with our community is present in all we do.
Bob Baker, Artistic Director 62 AVENUE Q
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, and BOARD PRESIDENT We are excited to bring you our 50th Anniversary 2015/16 Season, specially created to celebrate, entertain and point to a bold future. Our ENCORE Campaign is in full swing and nearing 60% of its $5 million dollar target. The rewards of the campaign have become a reality with construction in progress on the new grand entry and digital marquee, scheduled to open this September. The Citadel contributes to the vibrancy of downtown and the social fabric of our city by operating a complex that not only houses our productions, but also provides space and service to many arts and community partners like Rapid Fire Theatre, The Canadian Country Music Awards, National Congress on Culture, and Catalyst Theatre who will become a resident company in the Fall of 2015. On behalf of all of us at the Citadel Theatre, we would like to Thank You – our patrons, premier supporters, donors, funders, corporate and media sponsors, for your incredible contribution to this season and for your loyalty and commitment. Thank you also to all three orders of government for their continued support of the arts in our community. Finally, we give a standing ovation to our artists, production teams, management, staff, volunteers and Board for their hard work and love of the arts. With our deepest gratitude,
Penny Ritco, Executive Director
Catrin Owen, Board President AVENUE Q 63
