But it’s the face. Pasty white with a red slash of a mouth. The eyes – huge, staring, black as onyx – somehow ill-fitting in the blank face that barely holds them. The stuff of nightmares. The poster is for the Citadel’s next production, Ride The Cyclone, A Musical, opening in February. The young lady staring at you in unblinking horror is indeed of the undead. Her name is Jane Doe because we don’t know what she was really called before “the accident.” And because her head was lost – so was her identity. No, the Citadel is not bringing us an all-singing all-dancing episode of The Walking Dead. Ride the Cyclone is the brainchild of Victoria’s astonishingly creative “Atomic Vaudeville,” a lively company specializing in post-modern vaudeville – variety, sketch comedy, burlesque. The troupe was founded by director Britt Small and playwright Jacob Richmond in 2004. The two, and their creative team, have produced a monthly cabaret that charmed and amused audiences in their home town and then exported their unique brand of humour to most of the province (and the Northwestern United States). Richmond, a restless talent who, besides his continuing input into the monthly vaudeville, has written other successful shows (Legoland), came to composer

“...In the course of the show they get to express themselves in what they perceive is the most awesome song in the universe.” Brooke Maxwell with the idea of writing a musical – something neither had much experience with before. Tapping into the enthusiasm of those-who-know-notwhat-they-do, and with the template of (of all things) Grease, to work from, they set about their task. It took years of, remembers Richmond, “fumbling around in the dark until we discovered something that worked. Brooke and I, during one of many gruelling nights reworking a number, joked that we will probably die ourselves, reworking a musical where everyone dies.” The story the playwright/lyricist brought to the composer was that of six teenagers who die in a travelling roller coaster (“the Cyclone”) accident in Uranium, the small Saskatchewan town where they live. They were all part of a small chamber choir. “The kids themselves have nothing in common,” says Richmond. “Only in the manner of their passing and that they are all ashamed of the randomness of their passing, ashamed of the crummy town they lived in and of how they acted in the town. In the course of the show they get to express themselves in what they perceive is the most awesome song in the universe.”

“There is really nothing else like it. It’s dark and it’s funny. It’s about heart and the fact that no life is a wasted life.” Richmond and Maxwell used their macabre story-line to probe deeply into more than just kids singing about their lives (and deaths). The playwright is quoted as saying, “Aristotle said in the “Poetics” there was nothing dramatic about an accident, or a natural disaster ... that structurally there is nothing interesting about such events for they have no real rhyme or reason, and the best they could achieve is a form of spectacle.” So he set about to remedy that “unfair sentiment.” “It is my opinion that no one considers themselves an extra in their own lives. Even the most sheepish, self-effacing person is forced to see the world from their own two eyes and has hopes and dreams that might be totally delusional – yet they are theirs. No one lives their lives thinking they are going to end up volcano or hurricane fodder.” And why turn it into a musical? “If I was able to answer the question, ‘What does everything mean?’ I know now, for certain, that singing and dancing is a good start.” Sarah Jane Pelzer, who plays the etherial creature in the poster, is very definite about it. Ride the Cyclone is not Forever Plaid meets Glee. “There is really nothing else like it. It’s dark and it’s funny. It’s about heart and the fact that no life is a wasted life.”

The original show started off as a kind of song-cycle with dramatic interludes with the actors telling about themselves between the songs. They are summoned back by The Amazing Karnac, a talking automaton who feels badly that they never got the chance to perform the concert they never gave.

“(It is) probably the most uproarious and outrageous piece of musical theatre Canada has ever produced.” The resultant production was immediately embraced by the home audience but, much like that Toronto phenomenon, The Drowsy Chaperone, refused to die. (And like tonight’s Blind Date which is also – hopefully – Broadway bound.) In fact, it began to change and grow. It conquered Vancouver. They loved it in Whitehorse. It slayed them in Toronto (the Globe and Mail noted, “Critics and crowds don’t always concur, but when they do, you’ve potentially got a powerful show on your hands). Words like “awesome,” “astonishing” and “entertaining” crept into the reviews of usually staid publications. Burbled another, “(It is) probably the most uproarious and outrageous piece of musical theatre Canada has ever produced.”

“...it’s been a very collaborative process – we’ve all had our hands in there somewhere – adjusting lines or filling out our characters. They have become a different part of us.” Sarah Jane Pelzer studied classical music but told me over the phone, “I had a drive to perform but unless you’re an instrumentalist or in musical theatre, there was not much available.” So she started performing in shows. One a year since she was in Grade 6. She didn’t enjoy it much but it grew on her. In University, she became part of “Atomic Vaudeville” and participated in the writing and (being blessed with what one critic called a “silver voice”) performing process. “We liked to joke that we grew up in the ‘school of vaudeville.’ We learned comic timing and how to hold an audience. Unlike Ride the Cyclone which came to us a meticulously formed project, the vaudeville was the product of frenzied genius. We started writing three weeks before the show.” The original Cyclone had no role for her but she went down to audition anyway. She must have impressed Small and Richmond because a role tailored to her talents began to emerge out of the creative soup. “I’m not sure what happened but this far fetched idea of an anonymous, headless character came out. It was tough because there wasn’t a lot to go on. I spent a lot of time sitting in a room trying to play around with the space between the lines.” The singer/actress has been working on the ever-developing show for five years now. “It’s definitely the product of Jacob’s mind but it’s been a very collaborative process – we’ve all had our hands in there somewhere – adjusting lines or filling out our characters. They have become a different part of us.” After its Toronto triumph, top New York producer, Kevin McCollum, who was responsible for the Broadway productions of Rent, Avenue Q and The Drowsy Chaperone nibbled. He wasn’t very happy with the format of monologue followed by song. “They made compelling arguments,” says Richmond. Specifically they asked that the dialogue be improved. A live band was to be added. Karnac, once only a recorded voice, was given a real character and turns out to be something of a villain. The relationship between the kids was developed. There is a game they play where they fight for the chance to be the one who comes back to life.

“...Expect to see something deep and wonderful and not really like anything you’ve ever seen before.” “It’s actually a whole new show you’ll be seeing in Edmonton,” says Pelzer. “For one thing there are few companies that get to work together for years and years. We are lucky to have a writer who is an expert at seeing people and writing for their personalities. And we have worked together for so long that we are almost a family and that adds a layer of richness you don’t often find in theatre.” As for 26 BLIND DATE

getting bored with presenting the show night after night, Sarah offers, “It’s such a tight show that all our energy goes into performing. It becomes almost like a dream because it is so specific and precise you have to focus on every moment. Expect to see something deep and wonderful and not really like anything you’ve ever seen before.” The Atomic Vaudeville production of Ride the Cyclone, the Musical opens in the Maclab Theatre of the Citadel on February 22.

Recently, he has experienced three of the greatest things ever: doing this terrific show with Northan and the boys, doing his own one man show, Drunken Fucker, stand by for the most terrificest… the birth of his son Phoenix. Life is, as they say, grand. Enjoy!

SHOW NOTES Blind Date began as a 10-minute clown turn in the Spiegelshow as part of the World Stage Festival at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The full-length version was developed at the Loose Moose Theatre Company in Calgary, Alberta, in consultation with Artistic Director Dennis Cahill. Clown genius John Turner, one half of “Mump and Smoot,” had some valuable things to say too. There is no such thing as a one-person show.

THE ALL-NEW BMW X1. JOY NEVER STOPS.

Agility + elegance = joy to the power of X. This is the formula on which the BMW X1 is based. At first glance it is a compact BMW X model. The second glance comes with the challenge to explore something new. For example, an efficient SUV with BMW driving dynamics. The powerful yet efficient four-cylinder engine works alongside BMW EfficientDynamics, a package of intelligent measures such as Brake Energy Regeneration, TwinPower Turbo technology, and an 8-speed automatic transmission, to guarantee outstanding efficiency. The maximum five stars awarded in the Euro NCAP crash test unite a clear conscience with a reliable safety.
