Welcome to Bittergirl - the musical! Bittergirl is a great Canadian success story. The three very talented creators, Annabel Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore have built their story into a smash hit play, into a successful book, and now into a fantastic musical! Each iteration has been a huge success because the story resonates quickly with audiences. Everyone can relate to trying to “getting over getting dumped” – and the Bittergirls tell it with so much humour, heart and humanity that it is easy to see yourself in the story. Bob Baker saw the premiere production of the musical last year in P.E.I., and he immediately knew that it would be a great fit for the Citadel audience – and he is right! We are proud to partner with Adam Brazier and our friends at the Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown P.E.I. on this production – the same great company we partnered with on Evangeline last season. Adam and his cast and creative team have done a fantastic job with this production – it is a ton of fun, and the music is spectacular! Speaking of great music, next up in our season is the great rock and roll musical Million Dollar Quartet – packed with music from Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Directed by Edmonton’s own Ted Dykstra, it’s going to be a fantastic night out – I hope you’ll join us! Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family! Enjoy the show! Sincerely

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director PS - I have just moved to Edmonton and am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I would love to hear from you about why the Citadel is important to you, about your favourite Citadel productions, or to hear your thoughts on the ways the Citadel could boldly move forward. Please do say “Hello” when you see me at the theatre, or feel free to email me at dcloran@citadeltheatre.com. 4 CITADEL THEATRE 2016/17 SEASON

bittergirl – the musical 23

What is In 1999 three writers and actresses, Annabel (Griffiths) Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence, and Mary Francis Moore, met in Toronto – one divorced, one just dumped by her long time live-in and one facing yet another failed short term romance. Quicker than you can say “It’s not you, it’s me” bittergirl the play was born! The girls took their outrageous and sometimes unbelievable experiences of getting dumped and turned them into onstage hilarity in what has become the smash-hit play bittergirl. The original bittergirls toured the show to London, England, to New York City for showcase performances at the John Houseman Theatre off-Broadway, and had three sold-out runs in Toronto. Now they’ve passed the torch to a new generation of bittergirls, with productions worldwide. On Valentine’s Day 2003, the bittergirls met an agent for coffee to talk about writing a book. And that’s how BITTERGIRL the book was born. BITTERGIRL: Getting Over Getting Dumped was published by Penguin Canada in January 2005, Penguin U.S. in September 2005, and Distribuidora Brazil in 2009. The bittergirls have been covered extensively in the media, appearing in numerous publications and television shows. Highlights include features in Elle magazine, Bust, Glamour, and Complete Woman, and appearances on NBC’s The Today Show. They have offered advice on television, radio, in line at the grocery store and the waiting room of their OB/GYN. Once the book was published, there was continued interest in the play, and the concept of Bittergirl - the musical surfaced. Bittergirl - the musical offers the best of bittergirl the play, concepts from the book and the sweetest girl-group music from the 60s. After being workshopped across Canada, including at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Bittergirl - the musical made its debut at the Charlottetown festival in June of 2015.

doesn’t look like much today. It began its life as a radiator shop. Through the front door you are immediately into the office where owner Sam Phillips’ indispensable assistant, Marion Keisker, looked after who was let in and who was not. The studio looked no different from many others that were springing up in the ‘50’s. It was small and unprepossessing with a real jukebox with flashing lights and a piano in the corner. Through the glass wall was a grinder of a sound board that recorded the great and the small, producing the “race records” that Phillips sold only in the Southern states.

“I was just a struggling cat down here trying to develop

new and different artists and get some freedom in music.”

It’s all there today in pretty much the same raw state it was back in the day when Phillips discovered and put on tape Charlie Rich, Charlie Jenkins (who became Conway Twitty) and Bill Justis. Is that the old amplifier there in the back where, if you believe the legend, rock and roll began? This is the way the tale is told. Ike Turner was on his way to the studio to lay down some tracks when his amplifier fell off the truck. Phillips stuffed some paper into the wounded amp and created the “fuzz” sound of the first rock and roll. That museum piece sound board? Is that the one where Phillips re-looped the tape over another head to create what he called “slapback”? That was the echo effect on the early Presley records that the heavy hitting boffins of RCA could never figure out. They put a microphone at one end of a long hallway and a speaker at the other but it was never the same. Sam Phillips loved the spirituals and work songs he heard while working himself as a kid in the cotton fields. Later, after a career in radio, he set up his own studio to provide an outlet for that music and its practitioners – the likes of B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf. The times were hard for Phillips. He recorded anything that would keep his modest operation in business – weddings, demos, funerals, conventions – anything. Meanwhile, he was turning

out a singular mix of black and white voices which passionately proclaimed the vitality of the music that saw its roots in slavery. Said he, “I was just a struggling cat down here trying to develop new and different artists and get some freedom in music.” One of the people who walked in the door was an 18 year old truck driver named Elvis Presley. He said he wanted to make a record for his mother. He sang “My Happiness” and “That’s When the Heartaches Begin.” And left. But his talent remained in the air like fine perfume. Phillips brought the kid back for a recording session but nothing worked. When it was over, and the machine turned off, a dispirited Elvis and the studio musicians started “fooling around” with an old blues number “That’s All Right, Mama.” Phillips stuck his head through the door into the studio. “What are you doing?” he barked. Taken aback Elvis mumbled, “We don’t know.” “Well,” said Phillips, “Do it again,” and hit the record button. Skip ahead to December 4, 1956. Elvis is the biggest attraction in the world. Phillips had long since sold his contract to RCA (the price for Elvis Presley in the early ‘50’s was $35,000) to make enough money to keep his humble studio, with its roster of rising stars – Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison – going. It was a busy day at the studio. Phillips was attempting, desperately and without much success, to come up with a follow-up to Perkins’ moderate hit, “Blue Suede Shoes.” The instrumentation was pure rockabilly and not what the producer was listening for. To shore up the accompaniment,

Phillips brought in his new acquisition – the wild-man musical dervish, Jerry Lee Lewis. Elvis dropped in for a visit with his girlfriend. Johnny Cash, who had already released a number of country hits, showed up for some business discussions. As is the wont of musicians, they began to jam. Said recording engineer Cowboy Jack Clement, “I’d be remiss not to record this.”

And the Million Dollar Quartet sprung to life. One time only. But lordy, lordy, what a time it was. Think of the subtext of the afternoon. The sons were beginning to leave the father and, although no one knew it at the time, it signalled the coming eclipse of Sun Records. Elvis may have climbed to the highest rung of showbusiness but was still smarting from a disastrous debut at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas earlier that year. Cash had dropped in to tell his friend and employer that he was going to leave Sun Records and sign on with Columbia. There were tensions within the group – including Lewis’ now well chronicled ambivalence toward Elvis. Perkins was resentful of Elvis’ pilfering, and refashioning, of his hit “Blue Suede Shoes.” They were all young, aggressive boys still struggling to find ways to define themselves.

But perhaps we put too much weight on an event that just materialized that day. Listening to the 46 track tape today there is an easy flow of communication between the participants. The songs are not rehearsed and many of them just peter out rather than end. What we are hearing is a group of old friends who gathered, on that coolish Memphis afternoon, to play old favourites – just for the pleasure of making music together.

They all shared one thing – an immense musical talent. That primitive recording, even with all its good-natured congeniality, is not what we’ll be hearing when Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux present in their propulsive take on that fateful afternoon in their notable Broadway hit, Million Dollar Quartet, coming up next on the Shoctor stage. What the two have furnished is a slick production that combines the controlled showbusiness elements of a Broadway show while losing none of the tumultuous, soulful spirit of the original. Escott has written more record liner notes than Nashville has guitar strings. He has penned a number of books, including a best seller about Hank Williams and the book that accompanies the acclaimed BBC series, Lost Highway: The Story of Country Music. Mutrux, who looks like a residual hippie with his long white hair and dark shades, is a canny showbusiness veteran who has written and/or directed and produced many movies (Dick Tracy/Freebie and the Bean/Two-Lane Blacktop) and

Broadway-style musicals (Baby It’s You). These two are too astute and showbiz-wise to present a PBS style documentary. The show was nominated in 2010 for three Tony Awards. It recently celebrated its record breaking run of 2500 performances in Chicago. “Exuberantly nostalgic,” said Michael Billington in the Guardian. Backstage Magazine called it, “an effort to turn pop nostalgia into Broadway Gold.” For those who are worried about yet another attempt at Legends in Concert, one patron observed that she was impressed with “(Murtux and Escott’s...) ability to turn this concept into a real story.” The great standards of country music are there (“Down By The Riverside”/“Peace in the Valley”) but each of the stars has their moment in the spotlight with a whirlwind of their popular hits (“Blue Suede Shoes”/“Folsom Prison Blues”/“That’s All Right”/“Great Balls of Fire” – and some 20 or so others). It all ends up in a fevered jam that mounts to rock and roll heaven. It doesn’t really matter that it probably never happened exactly that way. Elvis left early as did Cash – although Johnny maintains in his biography that he was there for the whole afternoon. The impromptu session certainly generates a lot of foot stompin’, hand clappin’ enthusiasm from the audience. To direct, the Citadel has chosen a man who has had considerable experience himself with early rock – Edmonton’s own Ted Dykstra. Recently Dykstra provided words, music and book for the Citadel’s successful production of the epic musical, Evangeline. But early in his career he set the Shoctor stage afire with his unforgettable and charismatic role as Cale in the musical Fire (Cale being a recognizable take on Jerry Lee Lewis). Dykstra’s blazing all-stops-out performance made him a star and certainly gives him a rare point of view into the explosive vitality of four performers who were in the process of creating a whole new kind of music. Million Dollar Quartet runs from October 22 to November 13 on the Shoctor stage at the Citadel Theatre.

Amendment – Foreshadowing Article in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Playbill Correction to the history of Bittergirl: Annabel (Griffiths) Fitzsimmons, Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore (all actors and writers in Toronto) first wrote and performed the play bittergirl in 1999. It was a huge success, and the three of them subsequently turned it into the book, Bittergirl: Getting Over Getting Dumped, which was published by Penguin Canada (and Penguin US) in 2005. Afterwards, the three creators began working together on the development of Bittergirl - the musical.
