GOD of CARNAGE
Yasmina Reza is not amused. People keep laughing at her plays. Reza is Paris-based, with a Hungarian and Persian background, and defines herself as Jewish. And she keeps turning out plays that make people laugh. Oh, they have cultural significance and make valid, biting comment on human relationships but often, to the playwright’s consternation, they have English speaking audiences holding their sides, convulsed with laughter.

“...My approach is not to say if this is a comedy or a tragedy but to make an effort to get at the heart of these people and let that take the play where it wants to go.” Reza is currently one of the most highly regarded and hugely successful of international playwrights but comes from a French theatrical tradition where, apparently, amusement is regarded almost as badly as commercial success. Her first major international success, “Art”, won major awards in both the West End and on Broadway and was performed in thirty-five languages. It made $22 million at the box office. And to make it worse, as her plays are translated into English, they apparently become funnier. Her translator/adaptor is famed British playwright Christopher Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses/the film: Atonement). Reza maintains she writes tragedies and there is a tale told that on the opening night of “Art” in London’s West End in 1996, she turned to Hampton, half-amused and half-serious, and demanded, “What have you done?” With the great international success of her latest work, God of Carnage, she even turned her back on the theatre that has given her fame and fortune (first as an actress then as playwright) and took a year off to follow French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his presidential campaign and then wrote a (best-selling) biography. James MacDonald, who will direct the Citadel production of God of Carnage when it opens upstairs on the mainstage on March 10th, has a thought on why Reza’s works translate so differently. First of all, Hampton is a fine playwright, with his own quick wit, which finds its way onto the stage. “Also, I think there are different sensibilities in different countries. A French audience may see different things in the plays than

audiences in London or New York. My approach is not to say if this is a comedy or a tragedy but to make an effort to get at the heart of these people and let that take the play where it wants to go.” James MacDonald is a distinguished local actor/director and is a director of the Citadel/ Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. As an actor, he has won two Sterling Awards (Einstein’s Gift/Of Mice and Men) and among his directorial triumphs he lists Billy Bishop Goes to War, Julius Caesar, Equus and Stones in His Pockets. The sly and fierce God of Carnage finds a precarious balance between credible satire and outlandish farce by exploring the tension that develops between our civilized surface and the savage instinct that prowls just beneath. Those who remember Bob Baker’s outstanding 2001 production of Reza’s “Art” (featuring Tom Wood, Ric Reid and Larry Yachimec), in which three intense, civilized friends tear away at each other over the artistic merits of a large white-on-white painting, will be familiar with the comic fizz and serious deeper themes at play when the self-described sophisticated among us are forced to tap into their inner beast. God Of Carnage has two couples meeting in an up-scale home in Brooklyn. Their 11 year old sons have had a school-yard altercation and one had two teeth knocked out. Alan is a high-pressure corporate lawyer married as much to his cell phone as to his wife (Annette), who is a “Wealth Manager (his wealth mostly).” Michael is a successful businessman (he’s in frying pans) and his wife, Veronica is, vaguely, a writer, working on a book on “the Darfur tragedy.” They have gathered, amicably, to discuss what should

be done about the kids. Proclaims Veronica loftily, “Fortunately, there is still such a thing as the art of co-existence isn’t there?” Well, Veronica, not in a Yasmina Reza play. The God of Carnage runs rampant. Fissure cracks begin to show almost immediately. What follows is what the New York Times loftily described as “a shifting ballet of emotions and loyalties among the fractious quartet.” Tempers flare and an increasingly ugly battle of words ensues as the toxic subject matter ranges far beyond the playground altercation. Or, to put it another way, the runaway emotions of both the kids and their parents are somewhat the same – only the playground had changed. The play begins with the characters regarding their spouses as confederates and it progresses until it affirms Reza’s premise that we are all ultimately alone – the men gang up on the women, the women gang up on the men and husbands and wives find themselves on opposite sides. Reza is too good a playwright to abandon her characters completely to Sartre-style existentialism. In all the carnage, she allows for occasional acts of kindness – even affection. Marvels MacDonald, “The play certainly takes you to outrageous places. But what ultimately makes it work is when the audience recognizes elements of their own life –

when people say, ‘My god, that’s what I think but I’d never be able to put it into words.’“ As Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo), who played Alan on Broadway, observed to an interviewer on opening night in February 29, 2009, “It becomes a free-for-all of emotion and brutal honesty. There are some great moments when the audience goes, ‘I can’t believe what I just saw.’ And most of them are very funny.” Director Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby/Repulsion) has just released a film based on the play but, despite an occasional award nomination (and a dynamite cast), it hasn’t impressed critics or audiences. I think the reason is there are certain plays that need the raw immediacy and danger of the stage and just don’t translate to cinema. Think of A Chorus Line, or even Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which was a good movie but can’t compare with the ferocious and unpredictable relationship of the protagonists George and Martha on stage. “It’s the fundamental difference between the movies and the stage,” suggests MacDonald. “I think movies are there to be observed and plays are to be shared. Not only are theatregoers experiencing all the emotions but the actors are very aware of the audience’s reactions and the feeling is that they are sharing that experience together. One of the great experiences in theatre is saying in the first few minutes, ‘Oh, I know where this is going ...’ and it becomes completely turned on its head. In God of Carnage, the characters are honest but unpredictable and if we are doing our job, we will take the audience on a journey with us. There are certainly elements of comedy, even of satire in God of Carnage but ultimately what makes any play work is what people recognize as themselves in the actors. They need to identify. Occasionally the response will be that they laugh. Occasionally they will be moved by it. At its heart,
“It becomes a free-for-all of emotion and brutal honesty. ...”

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean “ultimately what makes any play work is what people recognize as themselves in the actors. They need to identify.” the play shows a great understanding of the way contemporary people relate to each other – in marriage, with their children – or how they are driven by their careers.” The Citadel has assembled a knockout cast of Canadian actors. They include the remarkable Fiona Reid (Citadel: August Osage County), Ric Reid (Citadel: “Art”), Ari Cohen (Citadel: Courageous) and Irene Poole (Stratford: The Little Years). With a cast like that, under the capable direction of James MacDonald, even the formidable Ms. Reza might manage a chuckle or two. God of Carnage opens on the Shoctor stage of the Citadel on March 10 and runs through April 1.

LAMS Productions (Associate Producer) is a NY-based

West Side Story marks their second Broadway endeavor beginning with [title of show] and followed by the revival of Ragtime. They are investors in Avenue Q and are currently involved with the upcoming Minsky’s and Give Me Up.
John Corker (General Manager) has had the privilege to be the General

He was the General Manager for the Broadway productions of the revival of Ragtime, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, High Fidelity and Baz Luhrmann’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème. He was also the General Manager for the holiday perennial Irving Berlin’s White Christmas which has had productions in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Toronto, St. Paul and Detroit.
SHOW NOTES Blind Date began as a 10-minute clown turn in the Spiegelshow as part of the World
Stage Festival at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The full-length version was developed at the Loose Moose Theatre Company in Calgary, Alberta, in consultation with Artistic Director Dennis Cahill. Clown genius John Turner, one half of “Mump and Smoot,” had some valuable things to say too. There is no such thing as a one-person show.

PLAYWRIGHT’S FORUM
EXHILARATING,EXHAUSTING, EXHAUSTING, EXCITING! EXHILARATING, EXCITING!
December was a very busy time for Play Development at the Citadel Theatre. The Playwrights’ Forum 2011-2012 just wrapped up and three words that immediately leap to mind are: exhilarating, exhausting, and exciting.
The first of a two-phase initiative for play development was once again lead by Governor General award-winning playwright, Colleen Murphy. Participants included the following playwrights: Bill Marchant (Vancouver), Trevor Schmidt (Edmonton), Nicole Moeller (Edmonton), Amy Lee Lavoie (Toronto), Elyne Quan (Toronto), and Jason Chinn (Edmonton). These playwrights embarked on a two-week intensive that demanded courage, sensitivity and generosity – and they brought all those qualities and much more. I remarked on the last day that the experience left me giddy and blessed to have been able to share in the beginning of their journey on writing a sparkling new play. We were also treated to two separate workshops from phase two participants, Jon Lachlan Stewart (BOOP) and Beth Graham (The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble). They shared their ongoing script development in a casual and collegial setting in the Shoctor rehearsal hall allowing invited guests to peek in on a valuable and delicate part of development. In closing, I’m pleased to share Vancouver playwright Bill Marchant’s endorsement: “The Citadel Theatre’s Playwrights’ Forum is a revelation. Simply, it is a crucible where better, braver ideas are reduced to their best essence. Stewards Colleen Murphy and Brian Dooley have fashioned a writer’s room that champions the fearless author, where we are encouraged to trust all our impulses, both light and dark, and trumpet the truth relentlessly.” – Brian Dooley, Director, Play Development

about our
MARKETING, SALES & FUND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
Think about how you found out about the Citadel Theatre… The play you are seeing today… The ticket you bought…
Whether you’re a long-term season ticket holder, or this is your first time here, chances are it’s because of the hard work of the people in the Citadel Theatre’s marketing department (or maybe you just know someone in the cast – fair enough). Well, what does the marketing team do? We do a lot. We create the ads you see on buses, billboards and TV, hear on the radio, read in the newspaper. We maintain our website, social media and eNews. We foster and build relationships with various sponsors, foundations and individual donors. We write the brochures and playbills, study guides and web content. We host donor events and opening nights. We plan for upcoming productions and seasons; we analyze demographics, schedule promotions; we inform the media and public about everything that happens here, from student talkbacks to new play development to blockbuster musicals. We raise money. We sell tickets. We listen. We got you here and we keep you coming back. In short, we do a lot.
