the
governor general It is my pleasure to send greetings to the audiences, theatre staff, volunteers and patrons celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Citadel Theatre. All of you can take pride in being a vital part of Canada’s arts community.
The art of theatrical performance serves many essential purposes. It is an exchange among artists who seamlessly orchestrate behind-the-scenes logistics. It is a junction between words on a page and those who bring those words to life. Above all, theatre serves as a meeting place for actors and audiences who find themselves in a catharsis, if only for the duration of a performance. For 50 years, the Citadel has offered the opportunity for people to discover differing styles, new talents and old favourites. There is always something to keep audiences enthralled. I wish you many more happy anniversaries in the future.

the
prime minister I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone marking the 50th anniversary of Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. Since its inaugural season, the Citadel has become a treasured part of the city’s cultural life, promoting an appreciation of the dramatic arts and offering a variety of live stage productions. The theatre’s success over the years is a testament to the talent and determination of the actors, playwrights, directors, and many capable individuals behind the scenes who have worked hard to build and sustain a viable cultural venue.
I would like to commend the Citadel Theatre’s many supporters for helping to make culturally diverse stage performances available to the broadest possible audience. Your generous contributions to the Citadel’s Encore Campaign will help fund exciting new programming initiatives and renovations to the building that will benefit the community for many years to come. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere congratulations and best wishes for a memorable anniversary.

Good evening, and welcome to the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Citadel Theatre. It is remarkable that one of the largest not-for-profit theatres in North America has operated in Edmonton for five decades. Every person associated with the Citadel — the actors, writers, producers, management, volunteers and more — are to thank for this incredible run. To say that the Citadel Theatre is an institution in Edmonton is an understatement. With a steady stream of great shows, incomparable creative development opportunities and selfless charitable endeavours every year, the Citadel truly is the heart of Edmonton’s thriving arts scene. Edmonton owes much of its cosmopolitan and creative character to the Citadel, and the many ways it has made life in the capital city more exciting and entertaining. Here’s to raising the curtain for another 50 years!

As minister responsible for culture, I am pleased to offer my warmest congratulations to the Citadel Theatre on its 50th anniversary celebration. For five decades, the Citadel Theatre has delighted and enthralled audiences with a diverse roster of performances and productions. From perennial favourites such as A Christmas Carol to Broadway hits like Avenue Q, the Citadel has brought joy and pleasure to Edmontonians and visitors season after season. The theatre has also provided generations of playwrights, actors, directors and other performing professionals the opportunity to hone their craft, explore their creativity and, above all, to put on an entertaining show. As an anchor of Edmonton’s Arts District, the Citadel Theatre has enriched Alberta’s cultural and artistic community, leaving a legacy that will continue to resonate with the next generation of theatre enthusiasts for years to come. My thanks to the past and present staff, donors, sponsors, volunteers, artistic contributors and patrons for all that you have done to support the Citadel Theatre and to make it into the world-class facility that it is. Congratulations on achieving this remarkable milestone. Enjoy the show!

students club We are thrilled to welcome back our Maclab Students Club Members for the 50th Anniversary Citadel Theatre Season! The Maclab Enterprises Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each of our season’s main stage productions, members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to the performance, the Students Club had the opportunity to learn about the work of a theatre director. Depending on the night, the students were joined by either James MacDonald or Nancy McAlear. James is the Director of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program and works in theatres across Canada. Nancy has also worked across the country in theatre, film and television. She has been nominated for multiple Sterling Awards, including, most recently, Category E which received five Sterlings this past season including Outstanding Independent Production. For the Citadel this season James will be directing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and they will both be reprising their roles in A Christmas Carol.

The Citadel Story the
first ten years by Colin MacLean In 1965, Joe Shoctor, an Edmonton theatre obsessed lawyer/entrepreneur, sat in his office on 103rd Street idly looking at the Salvation Army Citadel just across the parking lot and wondered if there was a theatre somewhere inside that 2 story brick building.
Shoctor was a smart, blunt, self-made man who embraced his Jewish roots and never backed down from a fight. He went to his friends Sandy Mactaggart, Ralph MacMillan and James Martin and persuaded them to join him in putting up $100,000 to buy the building. $150,000 more was spent on renovations. Joe, ever the optimist, told them they’d make a lot of money. Well, they never really did make much money but if you talk to Sandy Mactaggart today – they did share a great adventure. Much like Shoctor, Mactaggart was a selfmade man. At the age of 11, he was evacuated to Canada during World War II and arrived in Edmonton in 1952. He liked what he saw. Mactaggart along with his partner, Jean de La Bruyere, another long time Citadel supporter, co-founded the development group, Maclab Enterprises. Maclab’s generous support of the Citadel continues today. Mactaggart recently recalled in an interview with the Joe Shoctor, Ralph MacMillan, Citadel, “Joe was possessed by the idea that we should Sandy Mactaggart and James Martin give the theatre a try. None of us knew anything about theatre and we certainly didn’t want to lose any money but Joe said we could build a good theatre for that money, and, you know, hire a few actors and raise the quality of theatre in Edmonton.” Joe was not to be denied. The Old Salvation Army Citadel wasn’t a great theatre. There was no lobby. The 277 seats were shoehorned into a church. Actor Brent Carver, who first played the theatre in 1973 remembers, “If you exited stage left you had to immediately turn left again or risk permanent injury by running into a solid wall.”
Brent Carver
For the opening show, Shoctor selected Edward Albee’s biting Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The show had opened in 1962 on Broadway, split the critics, horrified audiences, and went on to be regarded as one of the classics of modern theatre. Woolf was

full of four letter words and raw emotions – elements that had seldom been seen before on an Edmonton stage. It opened on a cool evening – November 10, 1965. Many of the good grey burghers of Edmonton made for the exits during the intermissions. “We thought, possibly never to come back,” laughs Mactaggart. But it worked. It was the topic of conversation all over town. Letters to the editor. Joe was ecstatic. The Citadel’s first artistic director was John Hulbert. Turned out he was not what Joe wanted. Hulbert was a theatre academic from Pennsylvania and Joe wanted a hands-on artistic director. Despite a solid commercial first season of plays, the theatre attracted only 800 subscribers. Hulbert was followed by Robert Glenn, another American, but a good director who had a sense of where the theatre could go. He wasn’t much interested in Canadian theatre, but he did present a balanced repertoire including The Threepenny Opera and Albee’s obscure mind-bender Tiny Alice. Joe Shoctor was no doubt the most ferocious theatrical fundraiser ever in Edmonton and he knew it would be a challenge to find a way into the hearts and wallets of Edmontonians. But in 1968 a rainbow appeared in the sky and at the other end – not a pot of gold but a short, dynamic leprechaun – a force of nature named Sean Mulcahy. He was a good director and a fine actor. He put the bums into the seats. Two people waiting at a bus stop? There was Sean talking up the Citadel. He worked the entire town – bingos, graduations, women’s groups, men’s groups, fancy balls and talk shows. He was unavoidable, unrepentant and absolutely charming – a gaelic Harold Hill. We turned out to see what all the excitement was about and filled the house. Mulcahy was followed in 1973 by John Neville. Neville loved Sean Mulcahy Edmonton. He was one of the great British actors of the western world. No patrician he – coming to bring culture to the colonies. He was born in the London slums. He wanted to produce Canadian plays. He became one of us. He became a board member of a local modern dance company. He became a Canadian citizen. He spread his mastery of text, his plumbing of deep emotions and technical wizardry with a voice like warm fog, raising the local theatre scene in doing so. He used local actors and directors; Walter Kaasa, Scott Swan, Tom Wood, Keith Digby, James DeFelice, Tom Peacocke and many more. Besides bringing his brilliance to a solid schedule of the classics (The Rivals/Much Ado About Nothing/Uncle Vanya) Neville was very aware of the box office lure of such commercial fare as Sherlock Holmes (with Neville brilliant as the great detective), Anything Goes and How The Other Half Loves. But the old Citadel had outgrown its roots and a shiny new theatre was forming in Joe Shoctor’s mind. boom 31
Writer’s notes
“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” - Aldous Huxley (1959)
I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes – and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a ‘boom’; it ends with a ‘boom’. I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together in the lobby after the show. Explosively yours, Rick Miller

The Citadel’s 50 th season begins with a “Boom.” To be more specific, Rick Miller’s spectacular, multi-media extravaganza is based around the artist’s prodigious talents. But you know that because you’re reading this program. Since you’ve made that commitment let’s forge on with the rest of Artistic Director Bob Baker’s intriguing season. Says Baker, “Our audiences expect high quality – and that’s what we will present for our fiftieth.” St. Albert’s Ted Dykstra (2 Pianos 4 Hands) didn’t exactly face the travails of Evangeline, the Acadian lass (of Longfellow’s poem) who spent a lifetime searching for her great lost love, Gabriel. That was during the turbulent times of the Expulsion of the Acadians in 1755. But he did face his own Odyssey. The topic was suggested to him by his then wife, Maritimer Melanie Doan. Dykstra took on a major task – he set about to write the book, music and lyrics. It’s taken the talented actor/ musician/director and man-of-the-theatre well over a decade to see the production of his epic musical drama to make it to the stage of his home town. In the succeeding years, an early partner, the Mirvish production machine in Toronto, suggested that he had to make it more edgy with sex, violence and realism. He worked for a year with a Broadway writer but that fell apart. There were iterations and workshops. At one point, Dykstra sadly abandoned the whole idea. He finally went to the Charlottetown Festival. They loved it and, betting the

family farm, threw quite a bit of money into the creative pot. The result was an impressive production that generated standing ovations and was hailed, with some reservations, in the press. “Epic, ambitious, Canadian,” burbled the Globe and Mail. Baker read the original book for the musical, was enticed and, echoing the original reviews, observed, “I saw some good things in it and some things that could be addressed. And then I heard the music. I was overcome. This was original and challenging. When Ted’s music swells, it lifts you off the chair.” Baker arranged a co-production with the Charlottetown Festival and took over the directing reins. The new production will be a complete re-imagining of the 2013 original. He worked with Dykstra on the rough spots and commissioned ace Edmonton designer Cory Sincennes to fashion some brand new sets. Using some of the originals, he also recast a number of roles. The cast here includes Josée Boudreau (The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast – and a real Acadian) with (among others) Edmontonians Réjean Cournoyer, Sheldon Elter, Louise Lambert and Julien Arnold. Tony Award winner Brent Carver is also on board. There will be a full orchestra. The world premiere of this eye and ear-filling new production of Evangeline opens on October 31. In scope and size, it might be compared to

Les Miz but Baker insists, “It is unique and not derivative of any other Broadway type show.” Citadel founder Joe Shoctor was a canny fellow and his choice of the first play ever to be presented by the Citadel was JAN 23 - FEB 13/16 inspired. It was Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The contentious play had premiered on Broadway in 1962 and, with an ecstatic critical and audience reaction, was already well on its way to establishing itself as a timeless classic. We were kind of a stolid lot 50 years ago and Shoctor knew that dropping the controversial play into our still waters would create a sensation. And it did. Observes Baker, Virginia Woolf is really about people and relationships and that doesn’t date. Jon Robin Baitz’ Other Desert Cities has been one of the most popular of seriously dramatic plays since it was launched on Broadway in 2011. In it, a family gathers for Christmas in Palm Springs. Some of them haven’t seen the others for many years. Another is just out of rehab. Some are liberal and others rock-ribbed Republicans. One announces that she is writing a book about the family – a book that will tear open the deep wounds that have divided them. And, of course, there is the long-suppressed family secret. Commented the Hollywood Reporter in a review, “.... the balance between comedy and intense family drama is fine tuned in richly satisfying ways.”

“One of my thrills as Artistic Director is to watch adults watching their children in one of our family shows. It happened in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. It happens every year in A Christmas Carol,” says Baker. And in the tradition of the superb productions the Citadel has given musicals, Baker is bringing Alice Through the Looking-Glass to the Citadel. This Alice first saw life in a scrumptious production at Stratford. It then, with a different cast but the same director (Jillian Keiley), moved to the National Arts Centre. It will come to us after touching down in Winnipeg. It will be produced in Edmonton with a largely local cast. So in February, fire up the family, corral the kids and join the Red Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Humpty Dumpty (and all the other entertaining denizen who dwell in Lewis Carroll’s demented imagination) and head for the Citadel. Many of us remember Baker’s 2004 production of West Side Story as a definitive one. “Yeah!” remembers Baker. “It was a very special performance. A great team came together for that one.” Then why do it again? “Well, we were looking over past productions that

everyone liked and West Side Story came up again and again. That one was a co-production with Calgary and so we were on a schedule and just couldn’t hold it over. Many patrons were disappointed. We won’t look to recreate that magic again – we’ll try something new. And it will be interesting this time because it’s part of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program.” Tracey Power was a whirlwind when she attended theatre school here in the late ‘90’s. She still is and her name as director has been associated with a bewildering number of stage productions. One of her latest is Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen (described by one critic as, “A raunchy, rocking out Hallelujah”). Cohen, of course, is a much recorded national icon whose simple, hypnotic melodies blend seamlessly with poetic, often cryptic lyrics. Power has taken 27 of his songs for Chelsea Hotel, inspired by an infamous hostelry where Cohen once lived in New York sharing digs with such notables as Bob Dylan, Virgil Thompson and Andy Warhol. The show follows a loose poetic narrative in which 6 performers play 15 instruments between them and sing and harmonize on all the songs. Chelsea Hotel (which is an add-on to the regular season) opens January 13 in the Maclab. Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn and Andrew Kushnir all grew up gay in Edmonton. The trio drifted to Toronto where they forged successful careers in theatre. The Edmonton connection forms a large part of the three-hander, The Gay Heritage Project (another season add-on). It’s a funny, impish, highly physical and fast-paced musical review that comes from personal anecdotes and an investigation into the surprisingly rich, sometimes moving and often hilarious history of the queer culture. It was an immediate hit in Toronto’s Buddies and Bad Times Theatre. In February, The Gay Heritage Project comes to the Citadel’s The Club. Observes Baker, “This is a very positive upbeat show. It is not looking for acceptance. It’s not militant. It has a universal appeal and recently, with this whole thing about gay/straight alliances, it has gained even more relevance.” And that’s the season. There’s much more going on at the Citadel as it celebrates its 50th and we invite you to check us out on the internet. And, oh yes, the Citadel’s annual invocation of all things Christmas, A Christmas Carol is back with a month-long run beginning on November 28th.
