Message From The
Artistic Director Welcome to The Candidate and The Party! When I arrived at the Citadel a couple of years ago, one of the first things that struck me was how many incredible performance spaces we have, and how exciting it is when we have many different events happening in this building all at once. It got me wondering if we could use this to our advantage and create a project that took place in multiple spaces at the same time. Years ago, I had read two connected plays called House and Garden by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn. The plays were meant to be performed simultaneously by the same cast. “What if we did something like that?” I thought. And then I thought, “What playwright do I know who would be crazy enough to be up for a challenge like this?” So I called Kat Sandler. Kat is one of Canada’s most exciting, bold, provocative, and hilarious playwrights. I reached out to her and pitched the idea of writing two interconnected plays. Kat was immediately interested, and said, “Clearly the plays need to be about politics!” So here we are at the World Premieres of The Candidate and The Party. Both plays are written by Kat. Both plays are performed by the same cast of actors, at the exact same time, with the actors running between the Maclab Theatre and The Club. The stories are narratively connected: in The Party you are guests at a fundraiser/birthday party where the nominee for the country’s Left party is about to be chosen; in The Candidate it’s months later, the night before the election, and a major scandal erupts. Each show is a stand-alone event. You can just see one of them and have a great time. The hope is that you’ll have such a great time at one play, you’ll want to see how the story continues in the other. But the main thing to remember while you sit enjoying whichever play you’re at tonight, is that anytime you don’t see an actor onstage, it is because they are running across the building to perform for a different audience on a different stage. If they look out of breath, it’s because they are! My thanks to all of the actors, designers, stage managers, and technical staff who have helped make this wildly ambitious project possible. (You should see all the different charts and spreadsheets we have created to try to figure this all out!) And my thanks to you, our audience, for taking a chance on ambitious new work, and supporting live theatre here in Edmonton. Enjoy the show!

Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of The Candidate, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Molly Pearson. Molly is an Edmonton-based stage manager and graduate of the University of Alberta’s BFA – Technical Theatre with a focus in Stage Management. She has worked with many companies throughout the city. are part art, part math, and a whole lot of luck…
Everything in these shows is timed to the second. It takes an actor approximately one minute and 10 seconds to run from The Club to the Maclab (currently the fastest running time is 45 seconds!) That doesn’t include the time it takes to change costumes – and if an actor enters on the balcony of either stage, it takes even longer! Each time an actor runs from one theatre to the other, they have to run up or down somewhere between five to eight flights of stairs, go through at least
eight doors, and run across one public thoroughfare past the Second Cup. The stage managers in each theatre have to be in radio contact with each other to make sure they start both shows at exactly the same time, so that all of our scene timings remain precise. Not only do the actors have to travel between shows, there are also some props and costumes that have to be shuttled between theatres to appear in both shows. It takes a huge team to ensure both shows run on time. Between the two shows, there are five stage managers, stage carpenters, wardrobe and wig personnel, and lighting and sound technicians.

NOTES When Daryl Cloran came to me with this concept, I thought he was nuts. Still do.
Daryl had read a pair of shows by Alan Ayckbourn, House and Garden, that took place simultaneously in two different theatres and told two sides of a single story set in two adjacent locations. When a character from House went “offstage,” for instance, their story continued into Garden. We’ve gone one step further. The Party and The Candidate are set in the same world, with the same characters and performed simultaneously in The Club and the Maclab with the same cast running back and forth, but are also separated by time. They tell the story of a leadership race in a fictional country over two nights: the evening of a fundraising party months before an election, and the night before the vote. We wanted to explore cause and effect; how our actions affect our future, or how a decision made in our past plays out in the present. Though the plays can stand alone, seeing both should feel like seeing a prequel and a sequel; you can catch up with these characters to see what happens, or go back in time to see where it all began, in whichever order you choose. So our plays’ stories are separated in time by months, and set in completely separate locations, which makes things more challenging because story-wise, anything is possible. I wanted a subject that was high-stakes and rife with opportunity for satire and dark comedy; something with outlandish scenarios, larger-than-life characters and meaty themes to explore, something that maybe we could all use a good laugh about. For me, that’s politics – the perfect playground for a modern comedy, because right now, the world of politics really is stranger than fiction. The individuals who have breathed life into these plays are truly extraordinary. From in-room group rewriting to endless designing, building, and constant timing, I am so thrilled and grateful to have had the chance to create something with these tireless artists who make the impossible possible. Very special thanks to dramaturg Tom McGee, story consultants Jill Harper, Jonathan Heppner, Ann MacNaughton, and assistant dramaturg Louise Casemore for helping us figure out how to tell these massive stories, and to Daryl for asking me to do this and for all his help, encouragement and “for sureness” that we’d get there eventually. The story starts at the leadership debate between the two candidates for “Chief Leader.” And then the action moves to the home of Bill Biszy, a former moviestar, now politician, best known for playing the action hero “Sharkman” in the very successful film franchise. Since it was penned in 1610, it has proven to be surprisingly elastic. It has been subject to all sorts of interpretations (Is Caliban really the result of years of the white man’s colonial conquest of Africa?). It’s been an opera, a ballet, featured in paintings and a lot of movies (Forbidden Planet/Disney’s Pocahontas). But few promise quite as much as the Citadel’s final production of the season, coming up in April. First, let’s meet Josette Bushell-Mingo. She is a London-born, Swedish-based, actress, playwright, and director of African Descent. She has played in Peer Gynt and Antony and Cleopatra. In 2000, she was nominated for a Lawrence Olivier Award for her role as Rafiki in The Lion King. The Queen presented her with an OBE. Having lived in Sweden for many years, she is the former Artistic Director for The Swedish National Deaf Theatre, Tyst Teater (Silent Theatre). Mutual theatrical interests brought her in contact with Daryl Cloran, the Citadel’s current Artistic Director. “Daryl is particularly interested in inclusive work – in new forms of communication, great theatre. He came to visit me in Sweden and that’s how we began our relationship.” Much discussion followed and finally Daryl made the decision to go with The Tempest.

So, as of the writing of this in early March, Bushell-Mingo finds herself with 16 participants in the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program spending a month amidst the glories of the Rocky Mountains preparing for a highly original interpretation of a 409-yearold play. The production will feature Deaf and hearing actors performing together on stage. It will NOT be the traditional view of the pairing, with hearing actors declaiming the Bard centre stage while Deaf performers “sign” in the corners. As the director told Foreshadowing in a written interview, “The two languages are different and we celebrate that – they must work in tension with each other, which gives a different urgency. The performers are working toward a complex translation, dialogue, and visual aspect inspired by the demands of Deaf culture – extremely physical and visual.” “It WILL be a very physical show, dance-based and movement heavy,” promises Cloran. Sign has long been accepted as a true language in itself with its own grammar and lexicon. Bushell-Mingo: “(I think that for audiences the combination of expression...) enhances the response to Shakespeare to create a visual and poetic experience. Sign language does something that spoken Shakespeare cannot do – in imagination, emotional depth, and cerebral reaction.”

passion, clarity, straight forwardness, “Herinsights, and power were infectious.” In her production, Prospero will be played by Lorne Cardinal, an Indigenous actor best known for portraying Davis Quinton on TV’s Corner Gas. Cardinal is a trained classical actor and has enjoyed a distinguished career in movies, television, and stage. There was a deer looking for something green to nibble in the snowy field in front of one of the exterior buildings at the Banff Centre when we talked on the telephone in early March. He was there for some exploratory work with the cast before they tackled the play itself. He recalls a preliminary phone call from Cloran on the possibility of a role at the Citadel. “I was looking for Sam Sheppard – Eugene O’Neill or possibly Richard 3rd. You know, plays that have interesting, complex characters. He called back offering Prospero.” Cloran set up an interview with Josette. “I told her I was not interested in an old guy walking around with a stick. She offered a Deaf/hearing collaboration – and water, magic, revenge, physical theatre and a big friggin’ ship on stage. Her passion, clarity, straight forwardness, insights, and power were infectious. After five minutes, I knew I had to work with her.” The thought of playing Shakespeare held no fear for the accomplished performer. In 2012, he was a player (and translator) for an all-Indigenous cast production of King Lear

at the National Arts Centre. That Lear was set in the 17th century in Northern Ontario and consequently many words like “knight” and “castle” had to be replaced. Cardinal participated in the re-write of the Bard. “I had to get those images out of my mind and think in terms of canoes, wigwams, and forests.” There was a beneficial side effect: “We all just picked up on the original rhythms and adapted them to Cree. In fact, many of the actors who did the best work were people who didn’t have any Shakespearean training at all.” An experience that might have a positive effect in his current production.
He’s an extremely “ open actor who brings his identity with him. Bushell-Mingo was delighted at the casting.
It will be his choice of whether he will use his aboriginal background in the role.” Cardinal is in the midst of a steep learning curve. He is studying sign language. Throughout the rehearsals with Deaf actors, he discovered he has a shared common experience. Cardinal’s father and mother were both products of the Residential School system – as was the actor himself for two unhappy years. The experience fostered a life-long feeling of being “other” – an outsider. He learned that many Deaf people have suffered a similar experience – shunned because of what many considered a “disability.” “The process is complicated and exciting,” says Bushell-Mingo. “First to understand and respect each others language and cultures and the other cultures in the room. Having to learn the value and structure of

sign language – remember Deaf artists are used to communicating with us. We, as hearing people, have little or no opportunity to interact with the community.” Cloran’s promise of a physical production also brought its own demands to the preproduction work. Techniques included such movement based disciplines as Suzuki, Laban, and Clown. Actually, Cardinal confided that he began his career as a clown. The Cree actor was born in Sucker Creek First Nation on the shore of Lesser Slave Lake but he fell in love with theatre while attending Cariboo College in 1987. Which means that the actor we will see as an elderly Renaissance magician made his first stage performance as a kid with a red nose. The starting point for Bushell-Mingo are the words, “What if?” “I like the idea of the environment fighting back – oceans, seas, the earth to which Prospero’s revenge is connected. We don’t go far enough with Caliban. I want audiences to understand what it means for Caliban – the only black person on the island.” Ariel, in various iterations, will be played by seven actors. There will be interpolations from other Shakespearean plays. The boundaries of this production extend far beyond just the marriage of two forms of language to probe deep into our cultural understanding of how theatre can be presented. Miranda, Prospero’s lovely daughter, is usually seen as kind, compassionate, and completely obedient to her father’s wishes. And usually as pale as an English spring snow crocus. In this production, this lovely “pinnacle of femininity” will be played by the lovely Thurga Kanagasekarampillai, a veteran of a number of Deaf and hearing productions and a one-woman United Nations who proudly defines herself as a “Deaf Sri Lankan Tamil Canadian Queer artist.” And, instead of piling her unique vision all on top of the original and coming up with some four-hour behemoth, Bushell-Mingo has stripped the production down to a spare 90 minutes. The artful director throws out a challenge to take on her “mosaic of ideas.” “People who don’t know the play should come and see it.” Will purists be horrified? “Who are these purists? Great work allows itself to transform and grow and transform again – but its heart always remains. But how it is done can set an audience’s imagination afire – that is the trick, the joy – the possibilities. Revenge, magic, justice, and love. Sounds like regular Shakespeare to me. The demand on the audience is to open up and join us on a unique journey in the epic retelling of one of Shakespeare’s greatest classics.” The Tempest begins April 20 on the Shoctor stage and runs through May 12.

KAT SANDLER Playwright/Director
Kat Sandler is a playwright, director, screenwriter, and the Artistic Director of Theatre Brouhaha. She has staged 14 of her original plays in the last eight years including Bang Bang, Punch Up, and Delicacy, and has been produced across Canada. Kat is the winner of the Dora Award for Outstanding New Play (Mustard) and a graduate of Queen’s University. She would like to thank her family, everyone at the Citadel for being such champions, and absolutely everyone involved in making these totally nutso plays.
DARYL CLORAN Director
Daryl is the Artistic Director of the Citadel, the former Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre (Kamloops, B.C.), and the founding Artistic Director of Theatrefront (Toronto). Directing credits include: Matilda, Shakespeare in Love, UBUNTU, The Silver Arrow, Made in Italy (Citadel); As You Like It (Bard on the Beach); Liberation Days (Theatre Calgary/WCT); Mary Poppins (Persephone/WCT); Tribes (Canadian Stage); And All For Love (National Arts Centre); and Afterplay (Shaw Festival).

Set and Costume Designer Megan Koshka is a freelance Canadian theatre designer, based in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a part of the Associated Designers of Canada, and is a graduate from the University of Alberta (B.F.A.). KIMBERLY PURTELL Lighting Designer
Kimberly is a Toronto-based lighting designer for theatre, opera, and dance. Most recently, for the Citadel she designed Mamma Mia! and Alice Through the Looking-Glass. She has designed for the Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, Canadian Stage Company, Soulpepper Theatre, Mirvish Productions, the NAC and the NAC Orchestra, Pacific Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Theatre Calgary, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and many others. Kimberly has received three Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Pauline McGibbon Award, and a Montreal English Theatre Award. THE CANDIDATE 41
MISHELLE CUTTLER Sound Designer
Mishelle is a composer and sound designer based in Vancouver. She is thrilled to be back at the Citadel after designing sound for Sweat this past January. Some other favourite past projects include The Matchmaker (Arts Club); Hir, The Events (Pi); Titus Bouffonius (Rumble); and Lysistrata (Bard on the Beach). Next up: Dead People’s Things (Zee Zee); and Shakespeare in Love (Bard). Mishelle is a twotime Jessie Award winner and multiple nominee. LOUISE CASEMORE
Assistant Director/Assistant Dramaturg Louise is a performer, advocate, and two-time Sterling Award winning playwright. Originally from Edmonton, she is the Artistic Director of indie renegade Defiance Theatre, recipient of the 2017 ATP/Enbridge Playwright’s Award, and featured artist in the NYC based “Necessary Exposure Project.” Original works include OCD, Functional, Gemini, and the cabaret exorcism in development that is Undressed. She’s thrilled to be making her debut with the Citadel, and is endlessly grateful to her partner and parents for their incredible support.
TOM McGEE Dramaturg
Tom is a writer, director, dramaturg, producer, and puppeteer based in Toronto. The co-founder of Theatre Brouhaha, he has consulted on all of Kat Sandler’s plays, serving as primary dramaturge on most of her works. Tom is also the co-creator of Shakey-Shake and Friends, a puppet Shakespeare company. Tom is the head of development and lead writer of interactive fiction at Tap by Wattpad and the DM/ Showrunner of Dumb-Dumbs & Dragons, a hit comedy D&D podcast available on iTunes.
