Welcome to A Christmas Carol! This is the 17th year of our beloved holiday production. As the new guy in town, I have been so delighted to meet countless Edmontonians who consider our production of A Christmas Carol such an important part of their family holiday tradition. One audience member recently told me, “The Christmas season officially starts at our house the day we all go to see A Christmas Carol at the Citadel!” I am very much looking forward to bringing my own young family to see the production this year to start our own holiday tradition. The past few weeks have been magical around this building. The halls are filled with happy children (and adults!) on their way to rehearsal or a costume fitting. To me, that’s what theatre is all about – the joy of bringing people together, young and old, to create something wondrous. This year’s production is all the more magical because we are welcoming Tom Wood back in the role of Scrooge – a role he originated here seventeen seasons ago! The longevity of this production is due in great part to the vision of director Bob Baker, Tom Wood’s incredible script adaptation, and the beautifully envisioned designs of Leslie Frankish. It is also manifested through the incredible work of the hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of actors, craftspeople, technicians and stage managers who have lovingly brought this show together every year. I have been watching in awe as the enormous team rebuilds the production for this season. I am so proud to be a part of it all. Thank you for being a part of the Citadel family and for sharing the holidays with us! Merry Christmas!
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director PS - Next up in our season is Fortune Falls, a brand new production by Edmonton’s own Catalyst Theatre, playing in the Maclab Theatre January 17 – February 5. I got a sneak peek at the production last month when it played in Calgary at Alberta Theatre Projects, and it is spectacular – filled with Catalyst’s trademark innovation, haunting music and choreography. This is one you don’t want to miss! 4 CITADEL THEATRE 2016/17 SEASON

TOM WOOD
om Wood is an accomplished playwright, actor, director and teacher. He has worked with every major theatre in Canada and a number in the United States. Mr. Wood has spent eight years with the Stratford Festival and six with the Shaw Festival. For the theatre, he has written B-Movie, The play (five Dora Mavor Moore awards and the Chalmers Award for Best New Play), Clap Trap, a farce, produced at Canadian Stage in Toronto and the National Arts Center in Ottawa, and Make Mine Love, a comedy about movie-making in Hollywood, circa 1938 which premiered during the Citadel’s 2014/15 season. He has also adapted this production of A Christmas Carol (in its 17th season), Pride and Prejudice, a new version of Servant of Two Masters (set in the Klondike), a new version of Uncle Vanya (set in Alberta in 1928), and a new version of Peter Pan (set in the prairies during the depression). His production of Vanya debuted in America, starring William Hurt at the Artists Repertory Theatre for an extended run and rave reviews. He has performed at the Citadel as James Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman (Sterling Award nomination), and John in Shining City (Sterling Award). Some of his directing credits at the Citadel include Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, Romeo and Juliet, Doubt: a parable, The Glass Menagerie, Hamlet, The Sound of Music and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Coming up in April is Mr. Wood’s latest adaptation, the world premiere of Sense and Sensibility.

Christenson’s Catalyst Theatre began its descent into the netherworld innocently enough. Christenson was in Fort McMurray directing a production of Disney’s dappled Beauty and the Beast when he was approached by theatre maven Paul Gelineau with the suggestion that the director bring his theatre company to the burgeoning oil town with an original production. Gelineau suggested Mary Shelley’s gothic tale of mortal life after death, Frankenstein, and Christenson’s dark path was set. While researching Shelley’s classic, Christenson came across “a bunch of stuff about Poe” that set him thinking of creating a new show about the haunted American writer. When that one, called Nevermore – The Imaginary Life & Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe, also took off, it lead the company to productions across Canada, The West End and Off-Broadway. (It is currently set to run 75 productions in the next three months.) Christenson thought, “Well, let’s make it a trilogy” and came up with Victor Hugo’s classic tale of Quasimodo, the disfigured bell-ringer in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That one also became a monster hit and its run at the Citadel played to something over 90% capacity. In the beginning, back in 1996 Christenson saw Catalyst as a local company that would use a heightened sense of theatre to tell its stories. “Over the years,” he muses, “it became clear to me that what is at the heart of (our theatre’s) distinctive style is that we work in the psychological realm. It’s not really meant to capture real world experiences – it’s about

what we experience inside. All landscapes for me are psychological dreamscapes. We move through time and place and our characters exist in a very fluid space. I have a real interest in characters who live in extreme states.” Christenson’s plays and musicals have tended to the whimsically serious but that doesn’t mean they are not often quite droll in their production. “There’s often a fine line between comedy and tragedy,” he observes. “It’s like in our most grief-stricken state we know how close we are to laughter. There’s a certain kind of absurdity to what you’re going through and both are a kind of cathartic release.” Pursuing his dream of moving outward from his Edmonton base, Christenson took his production of Fringe favourite Elephant Wake to the fabled Edinburgh Festival. “It’s a festival where presenters come from all over the world to look for new prospects.” Elephant Wake proved to be a winner and opened up all sorts of possibilities in the U.K. “We did that with our next three shows and all three got picked up. So our reputation grew and slowly the theatres got bigger and bigger.”

They sure did. The company played the fabled Barbican in London and the equally fabled jewel-box Victoria Theatre in New York built in 1902 by Oscar Hammerstein and which provided a home for George Arliss, Tyrone Power and Mary Pickford over the years. Along the way, the company, now with a repertoire of 22 plays, has played to sold-out houses and has been showered with awards and honours. Christenson has been short-listed for the prestigious Siminovitch Prize among many other awards and recognitions. There is no doubt the producer/director/writer/composer/director is a solo phenomenon but he is the first to spread the credit around. The most integral influence in his productions has been resident designer Bretta Gerecke. As set, lighting and costume designer, she was responsible for the unique look of most of the company’s productions over the years, creating a crazy-quilt of designs that linger in the mind. When budgets are tight she gets downright alchemic – for Frankenstein she tortured paper into fantastic shapes and dressed the entire cast in it. “A startling storybook come to life,” said Liz Nicholls in the Journal. Christenson was saddened at the beginning of the creative process for the company’s new work, Fortune Falls, when, after the initial planning for the project, Gerecke had to drop out for family reasons. As with many developing works Christenson had some problems with this one. “I took some of my earlier writing to a workshop but it wasn’t working for me. So I approached Beth Graham.”

I love collaboration. “All of my productions are a real dialogue. My favourite place in the world is the rehearsal hall.
”
Beth Graham is a familiar name to Edmonton theatregoers. She’s a terrific actress (the Citadel’s The Penelopiad) and vigorous playwright. She first burst upon the scene right out of the U of A with her play, The Drowning Girls, (written with Daniela Vlaskalic and Charlie Tomlinson) in 1999 at the Fringe. She followed that up with, among others, Comrades, and the Governor General’s Award nominated, The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble. She also found time to appear as an actress in such Catalyst plays as Nevermore, Hunchback and The Blue Orphan. Christenson remembers, “We started working together taking it a day at a time to see how it felt. We developed a great working relationship.” Says Graham, “We’d talk. We’d generate a megaton of writing. We’d assemble it. We’d talk some more. There’s lots of back and forth.” Christenson observes, “I love collaboration. All of my productions are a real dialogue. My favourite place in the world is the rehearsal hall.” Slowly a familiar, well-practiced team

began to coalesce around the two writers. “Sound designer Matthew Skopyk was with us from almost the very beginning. We had a voice and text coach and a dramaturge.” Another long time valued and creative member of the team was choreographer Laura Krewski. Krewski is responsible for the stylized movement that is so much part of Catalyst productions. Turkish Canadian designer Kerem Cetinel put his own creative stamp on set and lighting. “So we had these wonderful, creative people bringing their imagination and creativity to it and so it began to happen really fast. In the last three and a half weeks of rehearsal (for the Calgary opening) we cut 24 people out of the show.” “I was listening to CBC radio and I heard this documentary on a town called Smith Falls – close to Ottawa. It became the home to the first Hershey’s (Chocolate) plant outside of the United States. The town identified themselves as “the sweetest place in Canada” and things went well for about 40 years. Then Hershey decided to move their plant to Mexico. What happened to Smith Falls was the loss of a real sense of identity for the residents. They didn’t know who they were anymore. The plant was taken over by a marijuana operation and the sweetest place on earth turned into a glorified grow-op. It struck me that the town has a very Canadian story. We seem to attach such a sense of who we are to the American Dream. Fortune Falls asks the question ‘What are we?’ ‘How do we build our own hopes and experiences?’ I wanted to use this story as a kind of whimsical tale that would profoundly explore the Canadian human experience.”
wanted a slightly more “Icontemporary feel to try and
reflect the experience of the millennial generation so I cast this show quite young.
”
Everett Liddleman spent his youth dreaming of a job at the Mercey Chocolate Factory and finally lands employment on the day when everyone is let go. He is grandly declared “the head of security.” What that means is he will be the lone caretaker in the big, gloomy, empty plant. “Once he is inside the plant he immediately moves into an interior landscape and, a little like the title character in Stephen King’s The Shining, he reacts to the characters he encounters. I suppose you might call them ghosts, but many of them are manifestations of himself inviting him to go on a journey.” Observes Christenson, “I wanted a slightly more contemporary feel to try and reflect the experience of the millennial generation so I cast this show quite young. I wrote the music in a more contemporary pop style which is quite different from anything we have done before. This is something new we are exploring but all of our shows have had that Catalyst approach and this one is definitely built on what has gone before.” Fortune Falls, a co-production of Catalyst Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects, begins on January 17, 2017 in the Maclab Theatre. 38 CITADEL THEATRE 2016/17 SEASON

BIOS TERYN EVANS Mr. Denham
I have always wanted to be an actor since I was a kid. I enjoy it, and I want to hone my skills as an actor as much as I can. I hope to keep on acting professionally in the future; it’s just so much fun! I was a student in the Foote Theatre School’s Young Companies during 2015-16. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much. At the moment I’m just trying to gain more experience and try to build a solid resume so that I can eventually expand my acting into the film industry. Theatre acting is different, of course, because it offers the actor the ability to connect more with the audience. That’s the beauty of theatre.

BIOS MICHAEL BECKER
Sound Designer (1954-2011) Becker loved Christmas, loved the magic of it. All the more fitting that he was asked to be a part of and to create the score for the Citadel’s production of A Christmas Carol. He was ever so thrilled and proud with its return year after year. Becker had a kinship with the theme of A Christmas Carol. He was compelled to help those in need. Every year he gave generously to the Salvation Army, an organization that once gave him food and shelter for a night in his early teens. For 35 years Becker composed music and designed sound for theatre, radio dramas and film. Becker is with us all tonight, a shining star. “Merry Christmas, everyone.”
