Message From The

Artistic Director Welcome to A Christmas Carol! This is the 19th year of our beloved holiday tradition, and this year’s production of A Christmas Carol is significant for many reasons. It is the first production in our 19-year history with a completely Edmontonbased cast. Each one of our 39 performers (adults and youth) is your local Edmonton neighbour. Next season, to celebrate our 20th anniversary of A Christmas Carol, we will present a brand new adaptation and production. That means this is the 19th and final year to see Tom Wood’s beloved adaptation. But we will continue to celebrate this production for years to come: next season, as part of Dickens Fest, we will present a tribute to the 19 years of this production, with displays of costumes and props from the production for everyone to enjoy.

Many, many people have contributed to this production over the years. Our immense thanks to Tom Wood, Bob Baker, our incredible designers Leslie Frankish, Robert Thomson, and Michael Becker, and the hundreds of performers, technicians, stage managers, and production staff who have lovingly brought this show to life over the past 19 years. And, of course, a big thanks to the many parents who have driven their children to many rehearsals over the years. I have been so delighted to meet countless Edmontonians who consider our production of A Christmas Carol an important part of their family holiday tradition. To me, that’s what theatre is all about – the joy of bringing people together, young and old, to celebrate and share. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family and for sharing the holidays with us! Merry Christmas!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

I think it’s a great story and it’s one of those plays that I feel like it ripples outside of the theatre. We greet the audience outside of the theatre after the show and we wish everyone a Merry Christmas. You can see the smiles on everyone’s faces and they’re donating to the food bank. I feel like they bring that joy right outside of the theatre, hopefully to the streets of Edmonton and home. – Beth Graham, who plays Mrs. Cratchit

fun facts and memories of the past 19 years

• Ben Wheelwright, now a Broadway star, (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) was in A Christmas Carol for five years as Tiny Tim/Youngest Scrooge/Toby/Peter Cratchit. • There are no understudies for the cast, so if someone gets injured, they have to improvise. One year, Maralyn Ryan, who played Mrs. Dilber for 14 years, tore a muscle in her knee during the show. Her daughter, Kate Ryan, who had played various roles in the production, came in to replace her for the rest of the run. • Sheila Cleasby, head of electrics, and Michelle Chan, resident stage manager, once acted out the entire show themselves to help train a new sound technician. • The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come is nicknamed Morty, from the French word mort (meaning death). Morty sometimes plays charades with the cast during down times on set. • The production has stopped mid-show only once in 19 years, when Scrooge’s bed got stuck and caused a power surge mid-show. • During the very first performance of A Christmas Carol, the actor playing Jacob Marley couldn’t properly hook both of his carabiners to the contraption that flies him out the window, so he had to walk off the stage. • Owen Hutchinson, a sound technician on the show, met his wife thanks to A Christmas Carol.

in memoriam We would like to honour the hard work of everyone who has contributed to A Christmas Carol over the years and is no longer with us. Your presence is felt in this building and beyond, at all times but especially at Christmas. It is still Larry’s voice over you hear in the opening graveyard scene. (Jan 11, 1959 – Aug 1, 2010) Jann Smith A member of the Marketing department. Jann was the biggest fan of this show and she was very instrumental in working with and documenting the youth ensemble year after year. (Aug 9, 1950 – May 16, 2013)

I grew up here. It is incredibly nostalgic to be doing this show again after 11 years away. I grew up watching and learning from many of the professional actors and now to be one, brings it full circle. I once played the young caroler who receives money from the wealthy father in Act 1; I now play that wealthy father. This show is engrained in me, as I’m sure it is for the thousands of people it has reached over the years. This show is generational. Both Ben Stevens and I grew up in the youth chorus and now to act alongside him in the adult company is very surreal. – Braydon Dowler-Coltman, who plays Joseph

elcome to the 19th year of Tom Wood’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, A Christmas Carol. It’s a rare honour to see a production come back year after year, seeing family and loved ones moved to cheering and singing and perhaps even shedding a tear or two. As the director, following in the footsteps of Bob Baker, I feel quite privileged to be a small part of an Edmonton theatrical tradition. I began my journey with this production 17 years ago as an apprentice stage manager, wide eyed, with a big smile, not unlike the many young people you will see populate our Maclab stage. Almost two decades later, I know I have changed and I hope for the better. My greatest pleasure in all these years has been to watch multiple young company members grow up and become incredible, caring adults, two of which are appearing in this current production. As well, many life-long and cherished friendships – with those who appear on the stage or disappear behind the scenes – have blossomed and grown. This year’s production is quite special to me, as I’m proud to say that our entire acting company has been assembled from the Edmonton acting community, the first time in this production’s history. And what a team they are! As I approached this final year, I wondered why I loved coming back to see Scrooge and Marley and Fred and Alice and Mr. and Mrs. Cratchit. No matter how many times I hear this story, it still gives me hope – a hope for all communities to come together. Perhaps Fred sums it up best, reminding Scrooge, and perhaps all of us, of our responsibility to humankind, reaffirming that Christmas time is “a good time, a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” That’s why I love this story. It has been an absolute joy to work on this production, I will hold it dear in my heart all my remaining years. Now, whether this is the first time or the 19th time you’re seeing A Christmas Carol, I hope you enjoy this magical journey one last time. Merry Christmas! – Wayne Paquette

It’s about race relations and how two friends are torn apart –

questioning the basic meaning of loyalty.

Reading, Pennsylvania lies in the middle of the Rust Belt. The city entered the Gilded Age as a mighty industrial and economic giant celebrating and thriving on its steel mills, foundries, and coal mines. The Reading Railroad found itself a $200 property and one of the most prized cards in the game of Monopoly. But the train shut down in 1980. Now, undereducated and left behind, citizens search for the America promised to them in the land of their forefathers, a land that no longer exists. It is in this decaying city that American playwright Lynn Nottage has set her Pulitzer Prize winning work Sweat, coming up in January on the Mainstage. After seeing the powerful Broadway production, Citadel Artistic Director Daryl Cloran was determined to bring the gritty blue-collar work to Edmonton audiences. “It’s about race relations and how two friends are torn apart – questioning the basic meaning of loyalty. It was easy for me to see how that story would be specific to Edmonton and how resonant it

would be for our audiences.” (In Sweat, the workers blame NAFTA for precious jobs being taken overseas – some presumably North). Sweat was the second play to win a Pulitzer for Lynn Nottage. As The Guardian noted: “Nottage’s two decades of work has garnered praise for bringing challenging and often forgotten stories onto the stage. In her works she often deals with the lives of marginalized people. Ruined explored the use of rape as a weapon against women in the Democratic Republic of Congo while Intimate Apparel focused on a lonely black seamstress working in New York in 1905.” When some friends of Nottage began to feel the financial pinch in 2011, the playwright decided to go to the roots of the problem. With a little research, she came across the sad story of Reading. She spent the next two-and-a-half years interviewing the residents of the undone city. Nottage certainly was not your typical investigative reporter. She was a middleaged black woman from New York City – the daughter of a middle class family. Early on, she developed a mantra to “replace judgement with curiosity.” Rather than pass herself off as a journalist or documentary maker, she called herself a “storyteller.” She told Interview Magazine in 2016, “I found that everyone I encountered, regardless of whether it was a homeless person or the mayor or the police chief or steel workers, everyone immediately wanted to tell their story. They felt marginalized by the mainstream media that, by and large

at the time, had been ignoring the stories of these mid-sized post-industrial cities. They felt like they wanted to go on record.” The problem had been exacerbated by carpetbagger journalists who, when they learned that Reading was America’s poorest city, came in for an hour, did some quick interviews, left and then wrote an article based on those encounters. “In many instances I ended up speaking with people over the course of two years and getting to know them – it was a relationship that was built over the course of time.” They came to trust this non-threatening middle-aged chronicler. She made some close friends meeting them in offices, hotel rooms and, in the spot she chose to set her play, a watering-hole called Mike’s Tavern. “They understood that I had a real investment in telling their story. The way that the play is structured is that each of the characters has their own aria... There are certainly characters that I judged a little heavier and harsher but I tried to have empathy for all of them.” Nottage tracks the stages of grief she saw in Reading – from denial to rage and finally, perhaps, to acceptance. Tense and unsettling – the play may be set between 2000 and 2008 but little economic progress has been made, despite the President’s promises, and the play still feels startlingly relevant. A group of friends have met regularly in Mike’s Tavern for many years. They have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets and laughs while working together on the factory floor.

eats us away until we disappear.

One of them is Cynthia, who is black – and Tracy, who is white. Both apply for a job in management – Cynthia gets it. As the economy tanks, the company begins to ship jobs south to Mexico. Workers are laid off – pitting Cynthia, now a member of management, against her old friends. The bar’s tenuous eco-system begins to unravel and economic uncertainty begets racial resentment – particularly when cheaper workers are brought in from Mexico to keep the shop working. The resulting picket lines and continuing layoffs chip away at trust and once close friends find themselves warring against each other in a heart wrenching battle. Says Nottage, “These were people who felt helpless, who felt like the American dream that they had so deeply invested in had been suddenly ripped away. I was sitting with these white men, and I thought, ‘You sound like people of colour in America.’” Observes one character, “Most folks think it’s the guilt or rage that destroys us. But I know from experience that it’s shame that eats us away until we disappear.” Nottage says, “It seemed to me that the characters carry a lot of shame. It’s the shame that they are not

working and the stigma that carries. We can express rage, we can say ‘I feel guilty’ or ‘I feel angry,’ but very rarely do we say, ‘I feel ashamed.’” Sweat was the first theatrical landmark of the Trump era. Said the Pulitzer jury, “... a nuanced but powerful drama that reminds audiences of the stacked deck still facing workers still searching for the American Dream.” Lynn Nottage grew up in Brooklyn, New York, the child of free-spirited parents who gave her a sense of adventure and curiosity. “I was a free-range chicken,” she remembers. “I always thought of my mother as a warrior woman, and I became interested in pursuing stories of women who invent lives in order to survive.” Looking back she once told an interviewer, “Every kid we grew up with either went into jail or law enforcement. There was a third choice: writer. You could become a writer.” She began to pen plays and one of her teachers – fellow playwright Paula Vogel, “...introduced me to the notion that you could make a career as a playwright.” One day while cleaning out the house of a relative who was deep into dementia, Nottage found a passport wedged in the pages of an old magazine. It contained a picture of her great-grandmother, Ethel. Since she knew nothing about her, and there was no one left to tell her story, Nottage set out to write one. The result was Intimate Apparel which became the most produced play in America in 2005. That was followed by Ruined, a play that dramatized the plight of women surviving the Congo following the civil war. “I love my people’s history. I feel a huge responsibility to the stories of my past and my ancestors’ past. So, I’m representing women – but I’m also representing playwrights of colour. Winning that second Pulitzer put me in conversation with the culture.” Acutely aware of the drawing power of a recent Pulitzer winner, Cloran is also appreciative of the tastes of his audience. Says he, “Like The Humans and Disgraced the year before, the Citadel audience is up for challenging contemporary drama (both shows were critical and box office successes), something that pokes at the nerves of a real contemporary issue.” Lynn Nottage’s Sweat, which plays in the Shoctor Theatre, runs from January 12 to February 3.

BIOS MICHAEL BECKER

Original Music & Sound Designer Becker loved Christmas: The way theatre merged with the everyday to make “magic,” and the widespread acts of kindness. He benefited from the generosity of strangers during hard times in his life, and dedicated himself to paying it forward whenever he could. Fittingly, Tom Wood’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol was one he was most proud of in his three-decades-long career, and he would have been awestruck to learn that it carried on for almost a decade after his death.

STEVEN GREENFIELD

Music Director

Steven’s selected credits include The Comedy Company (Shadow Theatre); Once (Citadel Theatre); Forever Plaid (Mayfield Theatre); Children of God (Citadel Theatre/WCT); Good Day and Good Night (Carousel Theatre); Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet (Arts Club); Elbow Room Café: The Musical (Zee Zee Theatre); and Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast (TUTS). Upcoming: Max in Lend Me a Tenor (Mayfield Theatre). Special thanks to family, friends, Jessie, Edgar, and Gotham for their love and support.

DOUG MERTZ

Dialect Coach

Doug has loved being part of A Christmas Carol for the past 10 years as dialect coach, and one year as an actor. Other recent dialect credits here at the Citadel include Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, Redpatch, and Shakespeare in Love. Doug has taught dialects for the BFA Acting program at the U of A, Theatre Alberta’s DramaWorks and Workshops by Request, Rapid Fire Theatre, Foote Theatre School and many more. He is also the Director of Education and Outreach here.

HEATHER CANT

Assistant Director

Heather is an accomplished theatre practitioner who works as an actor, director, and producer. During 2018, she directed Armstrong’s War for Western Canada Theatre, and the Thousand Islands Playhouse/WCT revival of The Birds and the Bees. She appeared in SkirtsAFire’s The Romeo Initiative here in Edmonton, and spent the summer performing with Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. She is also the creator and curator of Secret City, an ongoing digital theatre project produced by www.phenomania. live. She is delighted to be back at the Citadel with the wonderful Christmas Carol family. Happy Holidays! a christmas carol 53
