The powerful and inspirational hit production has since played at Persephone Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Theatre Calgary, Belfry Theatre, and will continue on to Theatre Passe Muraille, presented by Theatre 20 in Toronto. Passionate about the creation of new work, Tracey premiered her new musical Miss Shakespeare for Musical TheatreWorks this summer in Vancouver running in repertory with J. She is also currently developing a new play in the Citadel Play Development Program entitled Glory, about 1930s Canadian women’s hockey team, the Preston Rivulettes. Other produced plays include Garage Alec (a bilingual comedy), The Great Mountain, Back to You; The Life and Music of Lucille Starr, The Big Sneeze, and Living Shadows; A Story of Mary Pickford. DIRECTOR’S Notes

Creating a new piece of theatre is such a rewarding and exhilarating

experience. When the piece being created is brought to life through the lyrics and poetry of Leonard Cohen, creative inspiration is limitless. Much in the same way Cohen uses words to paint a poetic picture, I used his songs as inspiration to paint a theatrical one. Thank you to Donna Spencer for her belief and guidance, to Steve Charles for his musical brilliance and creative partnership, to James MacDonald for his influence and beautiful heart, and to this incredible company who joined me for this creative journey with such trust, passion and artistry. This is a story of love, of pain, of artistic struggle that begins and ends with Cohen’s words but lives within us. I invite you to lose yourself in our world and feel Cohen’s songs once again, for the very first time. A special thank you to Bob, James, and the entire Citadel team for joining us on the Chelsea Hotel journey. I graduated from Grant MacEwan’s Theatre Arts program in 1997, and having recently moved back to Edmonton, it means so much to share this show with a community that was such an inspiration at the start of my career. Thank you and enjoy!

Shoctor planned the opening of the first play in his new theatre well. How do you attract audiences willing to pay professional prices for tickets, to a new theatre that was mostly known as a Salvation Army church? You put on a play that had already generated considerable controversy in that centre of all things sophisticated and worldly, New York. In 1963, Virginia Woolf won a Tony and a Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. It was selected for a Pulitzer Prize but the trustees of Columbia University, the awards advisory board, objected to the play’s use of profanity and sexual themes and overrode the committee’s suggestion. They felt that playwright Edward Albee was a nihilist and Virginia Woolf was depressing, angry and cynical. It later turned out that some of the advisory board had not read or seen the play. Albee seems sanguine about the slight. He says (echoing the controversy that later would envelop the Citadel’s production), “I realized fairly quickly that I would get much more publicity out of having the Columbia board turn down Virginia Woolf than I would ever have gotten for getting it.” Over the years, Albee has been awarded three Pulitzers for his plays A Delicate Balance, Seascape and Three Tall Women. Says Albee, “When people ask how many Pulitzer prizes I have, I say, ‘three-and-a-half.’” Looking back at the fracas years later he observed, “The function of art is to instruct us. If we want our arts to be escapist, if we want them to conform with our opinions of ourselves,

what earthly good are they? I don’t think there is any point in experiencing anything in the arts that leaves you exactly where you started.” Back at the Citadel, the controversy continued with a buzz commenting on the number of audience members who left during intermission. There were letters to the editor, phone calls to radio stations and many discussions around the water cooler. Edmonton knew there was a new theatre in town. Now, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has taken its place as a timeless theatre classic. It is still a popular choice of directors all over the world and is oft produced. So, what better production to help celebrate the Citadel’s fiftieth anniversary than the one that began it all? How has the now venerable vehicle stood the test of time? Does it still have the power to delight and horrify us? Does it still pack a cogent, emotional and theatrical wallop after half a century? After all, emotional violence on stage, blistering family discord (See Clybourne Park/God of Carnage) and scorching street language is so common on today’s stages as to barely register on modern audiences.

“I don’t think there is any point in experiencing anything in the arts that leaves you exactly where you started.

The early sixties had a profound effect on how Virginia Woolf was received. Sure, there was the cold war but on television we watched Leave It To Beaver and Ozzie and Harriet. The American Dream was unfolding its butterfly wings and leading us into a profound belief in “exceptionalism” — success can be achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers. Then along came Albee, an upstart 32 year-old New York academic who forced us to examine some closely held and cherished beliefs. The title came to Albee one night when he was in a pub having a beer. He saw Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? scrawled on a bar of soap. “When I started to write the play it cropped up in my mind again. And of course who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf means who’s afraid of the big bad wolf... who’s afraid of living life without false illusions.” The play is divided into three parts – Fun and Games, Walpurgisnacht (Witches’ Night) and The Exorcism. The play opens with George and Martha returning from a booze fuelled night at a college party. We learn that another couple, Nick and Honey, will be joining them. The two taunt each other. They have been married a long time and know how to wound deeply but have managed to skirt the ugliness of their marriage by taking refuge in illusion. Their early ripostes are low key but we sense something big is coming. Martha digs at him, “I swear...

if you existed, I’d divorce you.” Nick and Honey arrive. She is drunk, giggles a lot and is in way over her head. Nick is a hustler ready to bed a few professors’ wives to get to the top. The verbal jousting turns ominous – full of personal revelations. George and Martha are obviously using Nick and Honey as foils for a mutual abuse they have woven into the fabric of their marriage. George says, “I warned you not to go too far.” Martha snarls, “I’m just beginning.” Having no real marital bond, or at least none that either is willing to admit, Martha holds desperately to a belief that they have a son. But does he exist? In this coruscating play, the destruction of illusion does not result in any apparent reality – or relief. “All truth,” George grinds out, “[is] relative.” Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? will be directed at the Citadel by James MacDonald who has just finished off another season as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. MacDonald is also an Associate Director of the theatre. After a stint of directing some of the theatre’s most prestigious productions over the years, most of them stark modern dramas (Equus/Vimy/ God of Carnage/A Few Good Men/Clybourne Park), you might ask if he ever thought of prevailing upon his boss to give him Charlie’s Aunt, or The Importance of Being Ernest to direct. “Actually,” he chuckles, “I love to listen to an audience laugh and, surprisingly unlike

what you may have heard, Virginia Woolf is very funny. Hate and love, pain and laughter are just different sides of the same coin. It is a phenomenally well written play and actually veers between nastiness and humour. It’s unsettling because we never know when Albee is going to pull the rug out from under us. Whenever you say, ‘Oh, I know where this is going,’ all of a sudden it’s going in the other direction. In casting the show I chose actors who were able to find the humour in the play.” So given the bloody battlefield their marriage has become, why do George and Martha continue their relationship? MacDonald posits, “There are many reasons. They need each other as companions. They have shared histories extending back many years. The two literally can’t live with each other – but they can’t live without each other. They understand what is going on. Much of the pain they inflict is, in an obtuse way, support for the other. I suspect they would not be any more happy outside of their relationship.” As a director, is it daunting to approach so complex a play? “I don’t like to overthink plays,” observes the genial MacDonald. “Finding the historic content and the themes of the play is interesting and handy but ultimately it’s the play itself. My job is to keep the audience off balance. I have to make them aware of who these people are. At the beginning, the characters tend to speak in paragraphs — highly intellectual and articulate paragraphs — but as the evening goes on they are speaking halting sentences. The cadence of the language speaks for itself. So I try to find approaches that will help the actors in their understanding of the language. One of the best ways to understand Albee is getting at the ebb and flow of the dialogue.” As Albee once said, “Put the play on its feet and the audience will know what it’s about.” George and Martha continue their epic battle when Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? previews on the Shoctor stage on January 23rd.
