Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Cost of Living! Martyna Majok’s Pulitzer Prize-winning script is a beautiful, intimate story about our connections to one another. I was so moved by it when I first read it, that I knew I wanted to share it with Citadel audiences. It is such a human story, that explores the space where bodies – on the spectrum of abled and disabled – meet each other. Cost of Living continues our commitment to ensure the Citadel is a place where everyone belongs. In preparation for this production, we received a Canadian Heritage grant to undergo renovations to make our building more accessible for actors and patrons who use mobility aids (such as walkers and wheelchairs). And this month we’re hosting an Exchange event about disability in the arts, in an effort to connect with, and learn from, our colleagues who identify as disabled.
It is such a pleasure to welcome director Ashlie Corcoran, Artistic Director of Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company, back to the Citadel (Ashlie most recently directed our production of Mamma Mia!). This is a co-production with the Arts Club, where it played earlier this season. Our thanks to the Arts Club for their partnership on this production. And our thanks to you for joining us for this important play. We announce our 2020-21 Season on January 27th! We’ve got lots of exciting shows lined up next season, and can’t wait to share them with you! Enjoy the show! Sincerely, Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory
and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create, and perform on this territory. STUDENTS CLUB The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of Cost of Living, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with T. Erin Gruber. She is an award-winning theatre designer with experience in set, lighting, costume, and projected media design. A graduate with distinction of the University of Alberta and a member of the board of directors of the Associated Designers of Canada, her theatre projects have toured locally and internationally. In June 2019, her design work was featured at the Prague Quadrennial International Design Exhibition. She is committed to combining the powers of visual communication with the passion and emotion of live performance. The projects that excite her most connect her core values of compassion, empathetic awakening, and joyful experience with the public. Recent award-winning projects include: Café Daughter (Production Design, WWPT, Erin Gruber Gold Medal and Audience Choice award at the 43rd annual Int’l Festival of Monodrama and Mime in Belgrade); The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Set, Lighting and Costume Design, Citadel Theatre and Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Sterling Award for Lighting Design); and Category E (Production Design, Maggie Tree Collective, Sterling Awards for Lighting and Projected Media Design). For more information visit her online: www.eringruber.com, www.showstages.com Through the workshop, students will learn how artists use design to create theatrical environments. They will work to endow the scene with visual narratives and will better understand how designers tell stories using time, space, and atmosphere.
For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact the Group Sales Coordinator at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com. COST OF LIVING 19

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean That led him to the theatre, and later on, that long trip from McGill University across the West to the University of Alberta – already established as one of the preeminent drama departments in Canada. Ullyatt may continue to credit the winds of fate for his subsequent career, but a look at his roles in the last 20 or so years leads to an indisputable conclusion – it is his incredible talent that has sustained him. A scan of his professional career in the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia is somewhat breathtaking. He has played many of the top roles in drama – from one person shows (I Am My Own Wife) to Grand Opera. (He’ll star in the upcoming Edmonton Opera production of Candide by Leonard Bernstein.) He’s an actor, singer, dancer, circus performer, and farceur. He’s played Richard III, Coriolanus, Bottom, Amadeus, an outrageous Frank N. Furter, the kid-slinging Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, and James Tyrone Jr. in Long Day’s Journey into Night. He won a Sterling Award for Sweeney Todd. He’s played the MC in Cabaret – and won a Sterling Award for that one too. And another for Burning Bluebeard – and yet another for Billy Bishop Goes to War. Ullyatt was never one to be impressed by his own talent or, for that manner, the gravitas of theatre. He is a well-known street artist. You may have seen him and his wife, Annie Dugan, hanging on ropes on the side of buildings playing dung beetles. Perhaps you caught him soaking wet at the St. Albert Children’s Fest on a contraption, part bike - part shower. The more money you put into the proverbial street performer’s hat, the harder he peddled

and the wetter he got. His street performances have taken him to England and as far away as Australia. “It’s all one to me,” he observes happily. “It’s all part of storytelling. I think that is the basic thing that kept me in theatre. You come on stage, say the lines and the magic continues. I believe in the community and family of it. As a performer I’m pretty selfish, I want people to watch me and have a good time.” With a bio like that, with his matinee idol good looks and refreshing attitude, you’d think that “the big time” would have beckoned. Says the actor with a laugh, “I’m sure everyone has gone through a phase where you just don’t want to do it any more. But I’m loving it all and I don’t think I could have lived any other life.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean SO WHAT HAS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT TO ME AS THE YEARS “HAVE GONE ON, IS BEING AT HOME WITH MY FAMILY. ” And then there was that pesky wind thing again. “I suppose I might have gone anywhere, but the wind kind of blew me into Annie Dugan.” Dugan’s experience in “the biz” is as extensive as Ullyatt’s. As a teenager, she followed what was then many a youngster’s dream – she ran away to join the circus. She settled in Edmonton where she established the Firefly Circus Academy, which teaches young people the wizardry of the big top and turns out performers for circuses all over the world. “So what has become more important to me as the years have gone on, is being at home with my family,” says Ullyatt. “If I had gone to New York or L.A., I’d have had to sacrifice all that. If I’d gone, I feel that I would have been a lot more selfish and driven.” Next up, Ullyatt will be featured in Every Brilliant Thing, a new play for the Citadel’s Highwire Series theatre initiative. The play was originally a one-person show and a great hit at the Edinburgh Fringe for the British comedian Jonny Donahoe. Donahoe joined with playwright Duncan Macmillan to create a real play. It went on to a successful run in New York and became an HBO special. The vehicle began to stir like a sleeping giant as more and more companies discovered it and its popularity grew.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING
JOHN IS A GREAT IMPROVISOR “ – HE CAN GO ANYWHERE THE MATERIAL WILL LEAD HIM. ” In the play, Ullyatt will assume an unnamed character who has a history of mental illness. The title comes from a scene early on that will claw away at your heart. A boy is only seven years old when his mother first attempts suicide. The kid is lost and doesn’t know what to do. So he comes up with an idea that only a seven year old could think of – a list. A list of all the things she might hold on to and find some kind of affirmation that would make life worth living again. The list includes “ice cream,” “the colour yellow,” “water fights” and “staying up past your bedtime.” The tally takes on a life of its own and remains in the background ready to serve when needed as the boy matures – even extending to his important adult relationships. Unfortunately, the boy grows up with his own issues, anxiety and depression, a condition that Ullyatt admits to bouts of himself. Director, Dave Horak observes, “This is one of those plays where the role can be seen as an extension of the actor. As a performer, John is quite raw and quite capable of inserting himself into the role. John is a great improvisor – he can go anywhere the material will lead him.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Ullyatt will meet us in the lobby of the theatre when we enter. He’ll greet us in a friendly manner while gathering information that will be translated into the elements of the coming evening. Every Brilliant Thing is immersive theatre but those who might be put off by the danger of being called up on stage need not worry. Ullyatt: “If anyone doesn’t wish to participate they don’t have to.” For those interested, he’ll hand out talismans: an object, a short speech, a word or two, possibly a number, and other elements whose importance will become clear later. Ullyatt: “The actor is more of an interlocutor between the material and the audience. We’ll be doing it in the round with the lights up – like a group therapy session. It may be funny but there are no jokes – the show is not at anyone’s expense. The important message is that we can care for each other. My hope is that we all leave the evening after having developed some form of empathy and compassion.” Horak adds, “Those who join in will feel highly rewarded. The play is a living, breathing thing and it will be different every night.” Ullyatt: “It’s also a pretty good piece of theatre. People are paying good money to see a show – and we’ll certainly give that to them.” Every Brilliant Thing begins February 1.
THOSE WHO JOIN IN WILL “FEEL HIGHLY REWARDED. THE PLAY IS A LIVING, BREATHING THING AND IT WILL BE DIFFERENT EVERY NIGHT.
