PLAY
We were a Free Press family; the other daily paper was the Winnipeg Tribune. The Free Press was delivered in the afternoons. After school and before dinner, my brothers and I clamoured for the funnies. Unassertive and unstrategic, I typically lost the tussle. Denied the main meat, I gnawed the gristle: the classifieds. I pouted, but in truth, the classifieds were more an education than a hardship. The first few pages contained the obituaries, for which I developed a perverse, lasting fondness, and from which I gathered valuable evidence about the certainty of corporal transience. And from what followed — apartments for rent, items sought, oddments for sale or hire, employment available, husbands and wives required — I deduced that life, however long it lasted, would be eventful. Before there would be death there would be love and work and stuff, so maybe there was a reason to go on after all, despite being at the bottom of the food chain when it came to Peanuts, Blondie, and Archie. Between the Free Press classified ads from the 1960’s and the latter day online bazaar called Craigslist, there’s not so much of a gulf. Neither would it exist were it not for the human longing for a marketplace, an exchange. We acquire, then we tire. We choose, then disabuse. We ingest, then we expel. That’s what makes the world go round. It’s ever been thus. It will always be the same; all that alters is the vessel of conveyance. Craigslist, by dint of living online, is vaster and more cosmopolitan and more rapidly evolving than any print medium could ever be; but it’s no less bland or utilitarian for all its immediacy and expansiveness. For the most part, just as with newspaper classifieds, it makes for pretty dull reading, a catalogue of quotidian requirements, enlivened now and again by something ironic or offbeat. For example, “Wanted: a young lady of German parentage; must be a 36-inch bust and understand bookkeeping on a small scale.” Also, “I will pay you one dollar to sit in my bathtub full of noodles.” The first appeared in 1892 in the New York Post, the second, much more recently, on Craigslist. One imagines, somehow, that the two advertisers would have a lot to say, one to the other. The well of human perversity and curiosity is no more plumbable now than it has ever been or will be. The texts for the songs in Do You Want What I Have Got are taken wholesale from Craigslist or were inspired by what was found there. Wave after wave of subsequent postings would have long since washed away any trace of these, were it not for the way the brilliant Veda Hille has made them singable, and the way she and director Amiel Gladstone have found within this random scattering a surprising emotional arc and unanticipated tenderness. 20 DO YOU WANT WHAT I HAVE GOT?

“Disneyfication” has been recognized, usually in a most negative way, as implying homogenization of consumption and merchandising while stripping a real place or event of its original character and repackaging it in a sanitized format. Gee Whiz. That is hardly the way to describe kindly old Uncle Walt who gave us a long parade of indelible, nay lovable, characters beginning with Snow White in 1937 and stretching through Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast all the way up to Elsa and Anna, the singing princesses of his (or more aptly his company’s) current mega hit, Frozen. Is “Disneyfication” suggesting that, as one sour observer put it, “Behind all those pretty little sentimental creatures in grey fur coats there lurks a cold ferocious beast?” My kids grew up with the twinkly Walt of Disney’s Wonderful World of Colour on TV. Walt was a genial family member who told wonderful stories of singing dwarfs, scary stepmothers, fire-belching dragons and hideous beasts who turned into handsome princes. He was sort of like Tom Hanks. Come to think of it, Disney was played by Hanks in just that manner in the company’s Christmas hit, Saving Mr. Banks, a film about the making of Mary Poppins (the movie musical version). I loved the movie but I suspect that crusty old Walt was more than a bit Disneyfied himself. Disney had long ceased to be the creative animator who created Mickey Mouse. (In fact he could neither sign his name with that famous Disney flourish – nor could he still draw Mickey.) He had transformed into the visionary entrepreneur that led his company to become the biggest purveyor of entertainment and fantasy in the world.

Nor, I suspect, would he tell the prickly P.L. Travers, who wrote the original books, “That’s what we do, we storytellers. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope, again and again and again.” I will try to avoid spoilers for those who have not seen the film but to stick to the true tale of Walt and P.L. First, we have to accept that Walt did Disneyfy everything he touched. He set the template for his endearing army of anthropomorphized creatures – funny little furry vaudevillians who often spoke in Brooklyn accents (Timon/Dumbo’s Mouse) and events cannily designed to touch the heart (“Bambi, your mother can’t be with us anymore”) or instill a delicious fear in the hearts of children (Snow White in the forest/the fearsome Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty). Sometimes the idea worked as with Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, or Mary Poppins (the next production scheduled for the Citadel mainstage). Sometimes it didn’t – Alice in Wonderland or Pocahontas. Often Disney would promise to honour an original concept but went ahead and did what he did best – create fantasy worlds that, admittedly, appealed to vast numbers of ticket buyers. (Me too. Perhaps I should establish my bias. I have probably seen every Disney movie ever made, including the early silent cartoons and World War ll propaganda shorts, and have been to Disneyland, Disney World and Disneyland Paris as a journalist, father and grandfather so many times I have lost count.) While securing the rights for the music in Fantasia there was a famous photograph of Walt with Igor Stravinsky, the aesthetic composer of the modernist atonal ballet The Rite of Spring. It was a photo-op and

the confused Russian was thrust in front of the cameras and then was immediately ushered out of the room. The studio did not honour the composer’s vision of a pagan ritual in which a young maiden is sacrificed to invoke the coming of spring but instead ambitiously (and brilliantly) gave us the entire story of creation, right down to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Stravinsky’s thoughts on the transmogrification are not recorded. Many millions of people have been enchanted by the studio’s work – Snow White may be the most viewed movie ever made. In those years it cost 10 cents to see a movie and it played everywhere. The Disney archivist once told me of accounts of aboriginals deep in the jungles of Africa listing the names of the 7 dwarfs to unbelieving explorers. Judging from the results, for much of Mary Poppins (the movie), Travers’ wishes were ignored. The story goes that Walt was introduced to the spit-spot nanny by his daughter, Diane, in the 1940’s. She loved the book and begged her father to make a movie of it. Disney courted Travers for two decades with, wrote biographer Caitlin Flanagan in the New York Times, “attention, flattery, transcontinental telegrams and personal visits.” Initially, Disney wanted to make Mary Poppins into an animated character, but Travers would have none of it, so Walt agreed to make a live-action film. The eccentric author, who was about to lose her home, finally took Disney’s offer for $100,000 and a cut of the gross. He even gave her script approval (something he had never done before).

In 1961, Travers finally agreed to let Disney make a movie about her magical nanny who flew in to change the lives of the Banks family of Cherry Tree Lane one day when the wind changed to blow from the west. Disney brought her to the studio for script consultations and Travers proved to be a formidable, unyielding force. She didn’t want music. She hated the idea of Dick Van Dyke, a television comic, in the role of Bert. There would be no animation in the film – the thought of dancing penguins drove her to apoplexy. Poppins in the book was stern and disciplinary. Travers saw the story as a tribute to her beloved but alcoholic father. Disney always thought of it as an entertaining family adventure. From the movie: TRAVERS: Mary Poppins is not for sale. I won’t have her turned into one of your silly cartoons. DISNEY: Says a woman who sent a flying nanny with a talking umbrella to save the children. TRAVERS: You think Mary Poppins has come to save the children. Oh, dear... When released in 1965, Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and (yes!) Dick Van Dyke, became an instant hit. It was the most profitable film of the year, beating out Goldfinger and My Fair Lady. To be fair to the filmmaker, Disney marshalled all the movie magic he had

amassed during his long career. Mary Poppins was Disney’s crowning achievement. It was nominated for thirteen Oscars and won five – the most any Disney film had ever won. And the film was genuinely special to Walt, expressing not only the power of the imagination, but also of love, kindness, and compassion. Needless to say, Travers hated the picture even though it made her a rich woman. It also unsealed her creative juices and she wrote several more successful books about the no-nonsense nanny and the Banks family only stopping when she observed, “Mary Poppins can’t just keep flying in and out.” British uberproducer Cameron Mackintosh (Les Miz/Cats etc. etc.) also pursued Travers for many years. He wanted to put Disney’s version on the stage. He ran into the same resolute woman the Hollywood entrepreneur had years before. Mackintosh tracked her down in 1994 when she was 93. Travers had enough of the movie business and vowed never again to allow a travesty be made of her beloved character. Macintosh told her he wanted to return to the original concept and then spoke the magic words (here roughly translated because I wasn’t there) “I feel that the redemption of the children’s father, Mr. Banks, was what really lies at the heart of the story.” Mackintosh promised he would dig more deeply into the story of how Mary Poppins turns the Banks family from a dysfunctional unit into a loving family. The flinty Travers began to melt. “No Americans!” demanded the writer. Mackintosh promised no Americans would be allowed. In fact, he hired Julian Fellowes to rewrite the book. Fellowes is best known nowadays as the creator and writer of Downton Abbey. The new Mary Poppins opened in the West End in 2004 and immediately began to attract huge audiences and continues to be a great success. It is more than a little ironic that some reviewers found the new Poppins to be a little too dark, missing the appealing warmth of the movie version. In fact, when the show transferred (successfully) to New York it was slightly re-written to give it a bit more of that old Disney twinkle. Somewhere, Walt must be smiling. Mary Poppins, co-created by Sir Cameron Mackintosh –- and giving full credit to both Disney and P.L. Travers – previews on the mainstage of the Citadel on March 15.
