Welcome to Crazy for You! You are in for a fantastic time! I love musicals, and this is a wonderful one. Crazy for You celebrates all that is great about the musical theatre genre. The whole building has been bursting at the seams the past few weeks; full of many voices singing and many feet tapping! This production is a great example of the incredible things we are capable of here at the Citadel. Working with a cast of 22 of the finest music theatre performers from across Canada (and right here in Edmonton!); an incredible director (Dayna Tekatch); music director (Don Horsburgh); and design team (Cory Sincennes, Gerald King and Peter McBoyle), we have put together this outstanding, athletic production. Our wardrobe departments are exploding with sequins, feathers, giant hats and some of the most spectacular costumes I’ve ever seen. Our wig department is packed full of the most incredible (purple!) wigs. Sets, props, paint, lights, sound – this show has our outstanding team of artisans working at full capacity, and making something truly amazing for you to enjoy. We are proud to partner with our good friends at Theatre Calgary on this production. And this has been a partnership in the truest sense – many thanks to the fantastic team in Calgary, particularly the wardrobe department, who have been building the hundreds of costumes with us! Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family, and for supporting live theatre in Edmonton. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS – We have just announced our 2017/18 Season and it is packed with fantastic productions, including Shakespeare in Love and Mamma Mia! Subscriptions are available now. I hope you’ll join us for the entire season!

Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and therefore we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. Prior to select performances of each of our main stage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of Crazy for You, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on choreography with Christine Bandelow. Christine is an Edmonton based choreographer and performer, although her work has taken her all over North America. Select local choreography credits include Bittergirl: The Musical and One Man, Two Guvnors here at the Citadel; Heathers for the Citadel Young Musical Company; Only in Vegas, Hair, Buddy, The British Invasion, Carousel and Little Shop of Horrors at the Mayfield; and many more. She has been nominated for several Sterling Awards for choreography. During the workshop, the students were taught a short piece of choreography. They learned the basics of era-specific dance and how dance adds to a story and why it is important.

about the

reators George and Ira Gershwin will always be remembered as

the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age. By the time of their 1924 Broadway hit, Lady, Be Good!, George had worked with lyricist Buddy DeSylva on a series of revues, George White’s Scandals, while Ira enjoyed success with composer Vincent Youmans on Two Little Girls in Blue. But from 1924 until George’s death in 1937, the brothers wrote almost exclusively with each other, composing over two dozen scores for Broadway and Hollywood. Though they had many individual song hits, their greatest achievement may have been the elevation of musical comedy to an American art form. With their trilogy of political satires — Strike up the Band, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing, and its sequel, Let ‘em Eat Cake (all three written with playwrights George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind) – they helped raise popular musical theatre to a new level of sophistication. Their now-classic folk opera, Porgy And Bess (co-written with DuBose Heyward), is constantly revived in opera houses and theatres throughout the world. Concurrently with the Gershwins’ musical theatre and film work, George attained great success in the concert arena as a piano virtuoso, conductor, and composer of such celebrated works as Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and Concerto in F. After George’s death, Ira continued to work in film and theatre with collaborators ranging from Kurt Weill and Jerome Kern to Harold Arlen, Burton Lane, Vernon Duke, and Harry Warren, among others, writing such standards as Long Ago (and Far Away) and The Man That Got Away, both nominated for Academy Awards. Ira’s book, Lyrics on Several Occasions, was published to critical acclaim in 1959; it was a unique selection of his lyrics, accompanied by his annotations, observations, and anecdotes. In addition to his own career, Ira attended to the details of his brother’s estate and the Gershwin legacy. He annotated their manuscripts and consigned to the Library of Congress all the materials that pertained to their careers. In 1983, at the age of 86, Ira died in his Beverly Hills home. Today, the Gershwin catalog has been taken up by a younger generation who have delighted in vintage and contemporary recordings, revivals, and the “new” Gershwin musicals, My One and Only (1983) and the 1992 Tony Award winner for best musical, Crazy for You. The United States Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the Gershwins in 1985 (only the third time that songwriters had been so honoured), and in 2007, the Library of Congress instituted the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Ken Ludwig has had six shows on

Broadway and seven in London’s West End. His plays and musicals have been performed in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. His first play on Broadway, Lend Me A Tenor, which the Washington Post called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century,” won two Tony Awards and was nominated for seven. He has also won two Laurence Olivier Awards (England’s highest theater honour), the Charles MacArthur Award, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Edgar Award for Best Mystery from The Mystery Writers of America, the SETC Distinguished Career Award, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Services to the American Theatre. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Old Globe and the Bristol Old Vic. He has written 22 plays and musicals, including Crazy For You (five years on Broadway and the West End, Tony and Olivier Award Winner for Best Musical), Moon Over Buffalo (Broadway and West End), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Broadway), Treasure Island (West End), Twentieth Century (Broadway), Leading Ladies, Shakespeare in Hollywood, The Game’s Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, The Three Musketeers and The Beaux’ Stratagem. His most recent plays include Baskerville, A Comedy of Tenors, and Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol (2015 Helen Hayes Award nominee for Outstanding Play). His newest book, How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, (winner of the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of 2014) is published by Random House. Over the years, his plays and musicals have starred Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave, Mickey Rooney, John Astin, Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter, Otto Schenck, Tony Shalhoub, Anne Heche, Joan Collins, and Kristin Bell. His work is published by the Yale Review, and he is a Sallie B. Goodman Fellow of the McCarter Theatre, Princeton. He holds degrees from Harvard, where he studied music with Leonard Bernstein, Haverford College and Cambridge University. For more information, please visit www.kenludwig.com.

Director’s notes Sitting in the audience

watching the original Toronto production of Crazy For You® actually altered the course of my life and career, if you can believe it. At the time, I was studying biology and jazz music in Vancouver, not at all clear about which direction I was heading. As I sat in the dark, it struck me quite viscerally that I already possessed the skill sets I was witnessing. I remember thinking, “I can do all that!” I moved to Toronto the following year and embarked on a career in theatre. I have watched and felt so many audiences be transformed by the power of tap dancing. Its rhythmic force can change the emotional temperature in a room. To feel a collective, palpable excitement and happiness spill out of a group like that is wild every time it happens. I’ve always thought that it might be connected to the rhythmic sounds we hear while we are still in our mothers’ bellies ... who knows? But it is very real, and I believe it has enormous value. It’s difficult to be stressed out about your life, or the state of American politics, for that matter, when there are 20 people tap dancing in front of you. And George and Ira Gershwin? I mean, come on!!! They created melodies and lyrics that have simply refused to fade over time. Their music will stay with you, not because they are annoying earworms, but because they are beautifully written and incredibly satisfying to sing and listen to. My desire and intention in directing and choreographing this show is not to subvert it in any way, or to make fun of the style of comedy it embraces; rather to pay homage to the extraordinary musicals of the 1930s and to bring what we have learned since into the mix. Reading the news and keeping abreast of global politics these days can be frightening and very dark, and my great desire is that you be surrounded and embraced by warmth, light, and laughter for the next few hours. The light is still there, we just need to make the choice to be in it. — Dayna Tekatch

It’s a place for the forever young. There are pirates and redskins (Barrie was not bothered by political correctness in 1904 when Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up was published) and a band of spirited lost boys, and it is packed with enough adventures to keep young minds (and their parents) entranced for over a hundred years. On April 1st, Neverland, in the guise of a stout ship, will set sail from the Maclab Theatre of the Citadel on its way to an awfully big adventure. All your old friends are there – Peter, Captain Hook and others. Only you may have to look hard to recognize them. For, you see, the production of Peter and the Starcatcher is what Marvel comics call “an origin story.” The characters are just beginning to discover their “super powers” and have yet to realize themselves as to what they will be in the future. A spunky lass named Molly (who is not quite Wendy, but there is a solid connection) accompanied by her nanny, Mrs. Brumbake, are aboard the good ship Neverland off to the kingdom of Rundoon. Aboard are a motley crew, including a cargo of orphan boys to be sold into slavery. One lad has no name but if you give it some thought, you may see hints of the boy adventurer to come. Meanwhile, Molly’s father, Lord Aster, is on board a faster ship called the Wasp. In the hold is a mysterious substance called “starstuff.” But a sinister fate awaits the Wasp as it is hijacked by an eccentric pirate, Black Stache. A clue to this chap’s future (if you really need it) is furnished by his hapless sidekick who goes by the name of Smee.

But wait, the Neverland’s hissable captain Bill Slank has switched cargoes. This, of course, demands an epic sea battle. We best leave the story there because some of the best moments in the play demand the element of surprise. But I can tell you the word “epic” is well chosen. What follows will include gloomy rooms aboard ship, a shipwreck (that “makes James Cameron’s Titanic look like a tea party” observed one critic), underwater battles, jungles and mighty storms. All of this is accomplished by what is known in theatre as “two planks and a passion.” For this heroic cloud surfing saga is staged with a few bits and pieces which are “discovered” on the stage – rope, household ladders, bits of cloth, toy boats – anything that comes to hand. The 12 local actors play many roles (over 100, actually) and often (and quite hilariously) become props to advance the convoluted plot. The characters even fly in a most spectacular fashion but (at least in the New York production) without wires. No wired Spider-Man or Mary Poppins here – there is little used that wasn’t available to theatre 200 years ago. And of course, the most important element is you. If you are willing to use your imagination and give yourself to the production (as thousands of highly enthusiastic theatre goers have worldwide) you will become an invaluable part of the whole exploit.

CRAZY FOR YOU 35

Muses the Citadel director who must bring some order to the chaos, James MacDonald, “Theatre is evolving with technology and movie techniques being a big part of it. We seem to be moving toward doing all the work for the audience. What I want to do is involve everyone on a whole new level – in a way that is very clever so that the audience will recognize the cleverness of what we are doing. I’m a fan of old movies and vaudeville and there was always a realization by the audience that they had to participate. We will have props and costumes and lighting and sound. Bodies will become trees and masks. I want to create something like a haunted house where everyone is in the experience and then we can have flying lagoons, jungles and oceans suggested on the stage but fully realized in the minds of the audience.” Going back to his years as artistic director of Edmonton’s Freewill Shakespeare Company MacDonald says, “We didn’t have sets or a lot of money so I tried to build the plays as organically as possible so that the audience would be immersed in the experience.” MacDonald plans to have the theatrical magic begin even before the play launches by a preshow experience putting the audience into a space and preparing them for what is to follow.

What I want to do is involve everyone on a whole new “level – in a way that is very clever so that the audience will recognize the cleverness of what we are doing. ”

MacDonald is the man for the job. His 19 previous outings as director at the Citadel, ranging from Virginia Woolf through Vimy and the Jerry Lee Lewis musical, Fire, have shown him to have a tremendous grasp of all things theatrical. He is excited to be staging Starcatcher on the thrust stage of the Maclab, particularly after Bob Baker demonstrated how involving the experience is for audiences with his kinetic production of West Side Story last year. “In the Maclab, the audience is physically engaged from the beginning because they sit around the action rather than having it distanced behind a proscenium arch. We can use the back of the theatre – we have the stairs and aisles. We’ll be looking down at the performers on stage – and we’ll be looking up. This is theatre in 3D.” As for the production itself, he has chosen much of his cast (and crew) from newcomers who have had considerable experience in local indie productions (Oscar Derkx as the “boy,” design by Megan Koshka, and soundscape by Eric Mortimer) and sprinkled in a pixie dust of well-known and familiar veterans (Clinton Carew/Ryan Parker/Stephanie Wolfe). He was particularly happy at landing Farren Timoteo as Captain Stache. Timoteo is a local performer who has distinguished himself in many kinds of roles in various local theatres and, many might say, he’s at his best in broad slapstick comedy. “Stache has been cast as a lip smacking villain but I see him more as a vaudevillian. A wisecracker. Kind of a Groucho Marx type.” I spoke to the director before he started to work with his cast and he certainly

was looking forward to the process. “I want to stimulate those people to allow their creative juices to flow. Then I expect to sit back and enjoy the ride.” That is a process that has worked well for the Citadel before. Patrons will remember two years ago when the company mounted a very funny version of Alice, Through the LookingGlass. The director of that wildly entertaining evening, Jillian Keiley, told Foreshadowing that the play, as she presented it in Winnipeg, was heavy on dance – Winnipeg being a dance-oriented city. But when she brought it to Edmonton, she knew of the international reputation we have for improv comedy. The result was an hilarious evening in which the entire company seemed intimately involved in making us laugh. Starcatcher is filled with movement – some critics have compared it to a ballet (MacDonald is doing his own choreography). Although it is not a musical – music is used throughout. “I cast a lot of musicians,” says MacDonald. “I wanted to see the music largely presented ‘live’ on stage and not prerecorded. We’re creating a live soundscape that people can see.”

I want to stimulate those people to allow “their creative juices to flow. Then I expect to sit back and enjoy the ride. ” Peter and the Starcatcher can be regarded as adult entertainment but, like the original, its greatest appeal may be to the young. MacDonald is already plotting out the sight gags. “There is a high brow and a low brow element to it – somewhat like movie comedies of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Or for that matter, the works of Shakespeare. There’s a ton of real wit and some glorious punnery. The physicality is huge with broad comedy – even a fart joke or two.” Peter and the Starcatcher is a celebration of theatre. It is storytelling as art and demands a collaboration forged between storyteller and listener. As Peter himself laughed, regarding the magical Neverland and with a tinkling fairy flitting above his head, “That is exactly where I am.” Peter and the Starcatcher flies onto the Maclab stage of the Citadel on April 1st.
