FROM

STUDIO The Citadel is very pleased to present Ronnie Burkett’s Theatre of Marionettes and their newest production - The Daisy Theatre. Inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows of Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, The Daisy Theatre blends improv, variety acts and music, monologues and morality tales, plus new short playlets by 10 Canadian playwrights written for the resident company of over 30 marionette characters. Each performance will be different, daring and ridiculous, making this a show to see more than once. These photographs document some of the varied marionette performers you will be seeing tonight.

Dykstra always loved to perform. His family would duly trot him out for impromptu performances for his parents’ friends but, unlike most kids, he loved it. When he wasn’t playing the piano he was on a stage somewhere. One of his earliest memories is of playing the 2nd Bird in Once Upon a Clothesline with the St. Albert On Sturgeon Players. He credits his performance as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit as his “breakthrough.” At first, like most of us who were put into piano lessons, Ted was ambivalent about the whole idea. But he was from a very musical family and there was no escape. “I enjoyed playing the piano at the age of 6 but I didn’t want to work at it much,” he observes brightly on the phone from Toronto. As he matured, he began to take his music much more seriously. By the age of 12 he had a particularly memorable string of firsts in the Edmonton Kiwanis Music Festival. He had dreams of a career as a concert pianist but reality brought that to a crashing close. “Those guys are like tennis players,” he says. “Only about 30 of them in the world have a shot.” Music was still very much a part of his life when, at the age of 20, he left St. Albert to attend the National Theatre School in Montreal. Upon graduating he burst upon the theatre world. He played Stratford (in a memorable turn as Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream). He played Shaw. He

performed all over the country. In 1979, he played at the Citadel in Terrence Rattigan’s Cause Celebre along with movie goddess, Glynis Johns. But music was never very far away. His incendiary lead role in Fire, based on the life of Jerry Lee Lewis, was a piano chewing tour-de-force. He played Glenn Gould, Cousin Kevin in Tommy, the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. School children all over the world know him as Bach from the kids’ film Bach’s Flight For Freedom. He’s played Shostakovitch. And Mozart. He’s won four Doras (acting/musical direction/producing), a Gemini (acting), a Sterling (musical direction) and various other top awards. Dykstra had known Richard Greenblatt for many years. Like Ted, he was an actor, writer and director. “We were working in a kids’ musical theatre piece. Richard had to play some Mozart and I was very impressed. He was the only actor I ever met with the training to play on that level. So, for fun, we used to get together and swap stories about growing up musical, the piano lessons and the music festival circuit.” Both had inspiring (and patient) female music teachers. Their friends were highly amused and their stories, with musical annotations, became something of a party piece. At the time, Andy McKim was the associate artistic director of Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre. “I’m sick and tired of hearing these stories,” he finally observed. “Why don’t you guys get a room and come up with something.” And they did. There was a huge buzz about what was developing in that little room. McKim listed it in his new season. In fact, every major theatre in Canada booked the show. Ah,

well, not every theatre. Citadel Artistic director Duncan McIntosh decided not to participate in the national tour. It broke Dykstra’s heart that he was not to play his show in his home town — but such is theatre. When Bob Baker took over as Artistic Director of the Citadel, he immediately phoned Ted and asked him to bring 2 Pianos 4 Hands here but, alas, it was in the middle of an international tour and there was no time. The reason the show is coming now is that Bob persuaded the two creators to perform it one last time in Ted’s home town. And so back in the early days, the two actor/musicians had a gig — but as yet, they didn’t have a show. Ideas flew in the creative soup that was that little room. “We thought quitting music at 17 is a crappy ending for a show,” remembers Dykstra. “So we dug into our own lives to recreate the love/hate relationship kids have with music.” The show was proving to be laugh-out-loud funny. The two change pianos in the middle of tunes. They send-up the music festival scene with a bored-out-of-his-mind MC and a judge who has to comment on 67 entries all playing the same piece. “Just like when we were kids, we’d start out with scales which devolve into ‘Chopsticks’ and ‘Heart and Soul.’ I became Sister Loyola trying gamely to pound a music education into a disinterested kid.”

“I really dug into myself. Into what I felt about being young, awkward, unloved, wanting approval.” COME VISIT OUR showroom

Funny yes, but something else was happening. There was an unexpected melancholy tone. “I really dug into myself. Into what I felt about being young, awkward, unloved, wanting approval,” remembers Dykstra. They imagined what would happen if Ted applied to a conservatory and Richard to a Jazz School — and were turned down. “Up until then our characters had been cocks of the walk and then we ran into a wall. We had worked hard only to have our dreams shattered.” One night on the tour, Bob Gainey, the Montreal Canadians’ superstar attended the show and he said, “I loved the show but it’s really about hockey.” “That’s the real reason why the show has been such a success,” says Dykstra. “Because people see themselves up there on the stage. And their friends and their families.” 2 Pianos 4 Hands became what Dykstra calls, “... the perfect storm. It happened just at the right time and it was thrilling and fun and exciting.” It opened in 1996 — going on to play in 5 continents and 150 cities. Over 2 million people have seen the show. (We even saw it in Edmonton in 2000 when the roles were played by two very talented young ladies.) “But be careful of what you ask for...” muses Dykstra, remembering those chaotic days. “Success brings an enormous toll. The price that you have to pay to go around the world for 6 years... the loneliness. It becomes your reality and you have to take it a day at a time. I’d be in London looking out the window of my gorgeous apartment at my name in lights and I wanted to come home.” I asked him what was the toll. He replied simply, “Well, I’m divorced.”

“Because people see themselves up there on the stage. And their friends and their families.” We don’t have to shed too many tears for Ted Dykstra. He’s now happily remarried with two kids, Theo and Rosie. After the years on the road, he stays much nearer home now. He turned to directing — although he makes sure to take a major role at least once a year to keep his hand in. “You have to keep redefining yourself in theatre in Canada. There is success in theatre in this country but it’s like a ladder on the ground. You can climb all the rungs you want but you’re just going sideways.” He also has a killer collection of theatre stories, mostly directed at himself, that he has collected over the years. “In Cause Celebre I had diarrhea. I went on stage in a diaper. I’ve gone on with the whooping cough. One evening in a period piece I came off stage feeling really good about how I’d just performed until someone pointed out that I had a period black shoe on one foot — and a running shoe on the other.” The star remains firmly fixed to his roots in Edmonton and his family holds a central part of his life. His entire local family will be in the theatre on opening night. His sister still teaches piano here as does one brother. His mother will attend and so will his first teacher, whom Ted credits with being the greatest influence in his musical life, Lillian Upright. When asked where he comes from Dykstra immediately responds, “St Albert, Alberta.” He wears his Oilers Toque on the streets of Toronto. He ends his official biography with the phrase, “Go Oilers Go.” Hope for a better tomorrow has always been a part of his character. 2 Pianos 4 Hands previews October 26th and runs through November 17.
