About the PLAYWRIGHT ARTHUR MILLER (1915-2005) Arthur Miller was one of the leading American playwrights

of the twentieth century. He was born in October 1915 in New York City to a women’s clothing manufacturer, who lost everything in the economic collapse of the 1930s. Living through young adulthood during the Great Depression, Miller was shaped by the poverty that surrounded him. The Depression demonstrated to the playwright the fragility and vulnerability of human existence in the modern era. After graduating from high school, Miller worked in a warehouse so that he could earn enough money to attend the University of Michigan, where he began to write plays. Miller’s first play to make it to Broadway, The Man Who Had All the Luck (1944), was a dismal failure, closing after only four performances. This early setback almost discouraged Miller from writing completely, but he gave himself one more try. Three years later, All My Sons won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award as the best play of 1947, launching Miller into theatrical stardom. Along with Death of a Salesman (his most enduring success), All My Sons and The Man Who Had All the Luck form a thematic trilogy of plays about love triangles involving fathers and sons. The drama of the family is at the core of all of Miller’s major plays, but nowhere is it more prominent than in the realism of All My Sons and the impressionism of Death of a Salesman. Death of a Salesman (1949) secured Miller’s reputation as one of the nation’s foremost playwrights. Miller won a Tony Award for Death of a Salesman as well as a Pulitzer Prize. The play has been frequently revived in film, television, and stage versions that have included actors such as Dustin Hoffman, George C. Scott and, most recently, Brian Dennehy in the part of Willy Loman. Miller followed Death of a Salesman with his most politically significant work, The Crucible (1953), a tale of the Salem witch trials that contains obvious analogies to the McCarthy anti-Communist hearings in 1950s America. Three years after The Crucible, in 1956, Miller found himself persecuted by the very force that he warned against, when he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Miller refused to name people he allegedly saw at a Communist writers’ meeting a decade before, and he was convicted of contempt. He later won an appeal. Miller also wrote the plays A Memory of Two Mondays and the short A View from the Bridge, which were both staged in 1955. His other works include After the Fall (1964), a thinly veiled account of his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, as well as The Price (1967), The Archbishop’s Ceiling (1977), and The American Clock (1980). His most recent works include the plays The Ride Down Mt. Morgan (1991), The Last Yankee (1993), and Broken Glass (1993), which won the Olivier Award for Best Play. Although Miller did not write frequently for film, he did pen an adaptation for the 1996 film version of The Crucible starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder, which garnered him an Academy Award nomination.

About the PLAY The Life of a Salesman Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, premiered in New York in early 1949. Spanning

seventeen years, the play focuses on Willy Loman, a salesman and family man. Through the play Miller examines the conflicts within the Loman family, as Willy struggles to fulfill his American Dream by placing unrealistic expectations of success upon his eldest son, Biff. Death of a Salesman won both the Pulitzer Prize in 1949 as well as the Tony Award for Best Play, largely due to Miller’s accurate representation of the American family during the postwar era. During the economic boom, the American Dream suddenly became about the desire for wealth in the form of capital and consumer goods, and the play fearlessly confronted and questioned this viewpoint directly in a tragic way. Not only was the play praised for its content, Death of a Salesman was also met with immediate acclaim for its style, specifically the incorporation of different time periods within the same scene. Rather than “flashback” to another time period, seventeen years prior, with a change of scenery, clothing and props, characters fluidly appear as scenes in the present play out, visible only to Willy Loman. These “daydreams” add context and subtext to the final days of Willy’s life. Arthur Miller began writing the story of Willy Loman at the age of seventeen, reworking it for years, and pulling inspiration from his own father’s company, his hard-working salesman uncle and his own cousins. The play has seen numerous revivals on Broadway, several film versions and has been enjoyed and liked (well-liked) by countless audiences across the globe since its premiere. The play was produced during The Citadel’s inaugural season, 46 years ago, and was last seen in the Shoctor Theatre as a part of the 1983/1984 season.

The last time Willy Loman, playwright Arthur Miller’s

Everyman (as New England travelling salesman), appeared on a Citadel stage was in 1984. He was played by the well-known American actor, James Whitmore. Whitmore’s wife, sitcom star Audra Lindley (Three’s Company), played Linda, Willy’s longsuffering wife. Whitmore, who had appeared in literally hundreds of movies and television shows, was short, bowlegged and had a face that resembled a New England road map. And brilliant. It was a distinguished and memorable evening – directed by Len Cariou (TV’s Blue Bloods – Broadway’s original Sweeney Todd ).

Whitmore told me at the time that every actor wants to play Willy Loman before he dies. Well, tonight we share the experience of watching one of the great actors of our time take on the role – as Tom Wood dons Willy’s well-worn shoes, and departs once again on his fateful trip to Boston.

Sep 24 - Oct 16/11

What I’d like to do in this space is to point out that Tom (and John Ullyatt, Brenda Bazinet and all the distinguished performers under director Bob Baker) are the lynchpins to a new season of mainstage performances that will challenge and entertain.

After Willy’s melancholy but ultimately uplifting journey, Baker has chosen Richard O’Brien’s musical/horror/sci-fi/comedy, The Rocky Horror Show. Now, I could go into the plot but that would take until next Tuesday – suffice to say that it begins as your basic horror film and then goes seriously and hilariously off the rails. Innocent Brad and Janet are engaged and travelling to visit a friend. Their car has a flat tire and they are forced to walk in the rain to a threatening old castle (of course). After being greeted by a hunchback, they meet Dr. Frank N. Furter, the resident mad scientist (and flamboyant transvestite) who sings the deathless ballad, “Sweet Transvestite”. Over the next two hours, the dead are reanimated, Brad and Janet find themselves in bed with some very strange partners and everyone (including the audience) joins in singing the show’s big hit, “Let’s Do The Time Warp Again”. John Ullyatt, who is playing Biff in tonight’s Death of a Salesman, will mine his inner diva to perform the

outrageous Frank N. Furter. Julien Arnold will narrate. Leigh Rivenbark, a former artistic director of Theatre New Brunswick, and who is currently working toward a master’s degree at the U of A, will direct. As you probably know, the film of The Rocky Horror Show was the original “midnight movie,” where patrons would dress up and join in the fun on the screen. So, if you feel you want to re-create some of your misspent youth, here is a list of the paraphernalia you’ll need: rubber gloves to snap, party favours, hats, a flashlight, a newspaper to hold over your head (don’t ask) and playing cards. After the glorious excesses of The Rocky Horror Show, The Citadel Theatre will follow Austin Powers’ admonishment to “behave.” On February 11th, The Citadel will present one of the most honoured plays of recent years, John Logan’s Red. Logan is one of the busiest of writers, dividing his time between Hollywood and Broadway. The list of the films he has penned is impressive and includes Rango, Sweeney Todd, The Aviator, The Last Samurai and Gladiator. He is currently writing Bond 23 and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. Somewhere in the years before 2009, he found time to write Red, an intense and exciting ninety-minute, intermissionless, two character, bio-drama based on an incident in the life of American painter, Mark Rothko.

Rothko is classified as an abstract expressionist. He is probably best known for his massive rectangular blocks of vibrant colours with nary a landscape or human figure in sight. He was also a difficult man of fierce opinions. In 1958, Rothko accepted a commission to provide paintings for the luxury Four Seasons restaurant in New York. Although he knew exactly what he was getting into, Rothko came to resent the atmosphere of the restaurant – I mean, people were actually eating. So, he simply paid the commission back, took his paintings and decamped. Logan’s play is a dialogue about art, the relationship between the artist and his work and asks the question: was accepting the commission selling out? Despite the exotic-sounding subject matter the play is surprisingly accessible and found a ready and enthusiastic audience. Logan’s play was greeted with rapturous reviews in London, where it premiered. It was greeted with the same enthusiasm when it moved to New York where it received six Tony awards, including Best Play. This co-production between Canadian Stage, Vancouver Playhouse and The Citadel Theatre will be directed by Kim Collier, who brought us last year’s astonishing production of Studies in Motion. In a recent interview for a national magazine, Kate Winslet (Oscar winner for The Reader), and obviously a plain spoken lady, disclosed that she laughed so hard when attending the New York performance of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage, that she “peed her pants.” While The Citadel does not encourage such an extreme reaction to the play it certainly demonstrates the effect the work has on audiences. In God of Carnage (translated from the French by English playwright Christopher Hampton), two couples meet, with admirable restraint, to discuss a playground fight between their children. become obvious and soon the four are engaged in knock-down, drag-out physicality in which farce triumphs over stark drama. God of Carnage will be directed by James MacDonald, an able Citadel regular, who is at home as much in drama (Equus) as he is with character-driven humour (Stones in His Pockets). This year the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program will be performing Shakespeare’s beloved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In the past three seasons, the Citadel’s prestigious, nationallyrecognized professional development program has yielded such winners as Pride and Prejudice, As You Like It, The Three Musketeers, and Little Women: the Broadway Musical. “The course of true love never did run smooth,” sighs the lover, Lysander, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Magic is everywhere as we follow the misadventures of four young Athenians. The four are manipulated by faeries who inhabit the forest and their fates become entwined with a comical group of amateur actors. The thespians end up in a nearby forest on a night when the nymphs, satyrs, and faeries are about. The King of the Faeries, Oberon, is quarrelling with his queen, Titania. To untangle matters, Oberon enlists his servant, Puck, to procure a love potion, of which he says, “The juice of it on sleeping

eyelids laid will make man or woman madly dote upon the next live creature that it sees.” However, not everything goes according to plan, resulting in some unexpected romantic pairings. The enduring vehicle has demonstrated great versatility and can be mounted as a light fantasy, a dark nightmare, a slapstick comedy or a semi-serious melodrama. It will be interesting to see what the Citadel/Banff cast (and local favourite Julien Arnold as Bottom the Weaver) come up with under the guidance of director, Tom Wood. The season ends with a re-mounting of the most popular production in Baker’s twelve year tenure as Artistic Director of the Citadel, The Sound of Music. Tom Wood’s original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most successful show celebrated its transcendent words and music, but layered on a level of believable drama that elevated it to new heights. “The depth of this musical is what brought us back,” says Baker. “At first glance, the musical may seem bright and cheery, but it is set during a terrifying part of human history. We don’t shy away from those darker elements within the play. For us, it is those moments that make the play more interesting.”

“The depth of this musical is

what brought us back.”

Baker’s production of The Sound of Music, starring Réjean Cournoyer as The Captain and Josée Boudreau as Maria, will open on April 21. It will also be included in The Citadel’s Family Series, three works designed to be enjoyed by parents and their children. The Family Series begins on December 2 with the perennial family favourite, A Christmas Carol, featuring, again this year, Richard McMillan. On January 14, the Young People’s Theatre of Toronto will bring its celebration of all things Seuss, Seussical, to The Citadel and the season finishes off with The Sound of Music.

IN LOVING MEMORY Michelle Dias, our Head of Scenic Paint Department,

passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, September 6th, 2011. Michelle was an artist, author, playwright, walker, traveler, music lover, voracious reader, gourmet cook and generous with her time for family, friends and foster kittens. She worked at The Citadel for 16 years. Her play, Cloud Flower Bird, will be produced by Rabid Marmot Productions at FAR FROM CRAZY, a collection of one-acts by first-time writers, at Azimuth Theatre, October 5-16th. You can see Michelle’s artistic flair on the set of Death of a Salesman. Her work is also evident on the set of Ronnie Burkett’s Penny Plain playing in the Maclab Theatre until October 9th. Her amazing smile and talent will be deeply missed by her Citadel family. Michelle’s painting of Ghost Light “Ghost Light” is composed of various handmade papers laid over a background copied from playbills and programs drawn from the archives of the Citadel’s earliest seasons. Highlights and shadows illuminate a theatre seen from the audience. A stage peopled by the ghosts of our imagination.

Haiti This painting was donated by Michelle to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

FACILITY DEPARTMENT

After you arrive at the theatre and find your seat, the curtain opens and reveals a wonderful set. The actors enter the stage and you realize a lot of people are involved in putting on this production. Costumes, hair and make-up, set builders, props, and a host of skilled people tirelessly work on each and every production here at The Citadel. Behind the scenes, there is another group of people working fervently to make your visit to the Citadel Theatre an enjoyable one – the Facility & Maintenance Crew.

This department is responsible for your comfort, as well as for maintaining the esthetics of the building. Leading this cast is the Facility Director, Louis Barron, who oversees all aspects of the facility. He ensures the building is ready not only for our own productions, but also for rentals, lease clients, and daily visitors at The Citadel Theatre. Every good production needs a director and this department is no different. We have a very capable maintenance manager, Doug DeVries. Doug is a long-time employee of The Citadel Theatre, logging in over 30 years of service. Louis and Doug use a host of service contractors to achieve the superlative level of comfort Citadel fans are accustomed to, such as Bee Clean for housekeeping, Serv-All for HVAC servicing, Otis Elevators, Imagine Electric, and many more. Louis and Doug would like to thank all our sub-trades for their commitment to maintaining the theatre. When you arrive for the 2011/2012 season, you will notice significant renovations have taken place the last couple of years. These renovations are identified and coordinated through the Facility Department. And after you leave the theatre tonight, this whole cast of characters will arrive and start preparations for another day of events and live theatre.
