message from the
Artistic Director Welcome to Empire of the Son! Tetsuro Shigematsu’s intimately personal story of his relationship with his father is one all of us can relate to, as we all experience complicated, crucial relationships with our own parents or children. This is an innovative, heartbreaking piece of storytelling, full of simple theatrical magic and profound beauty. This production has been a huge hit across Canada, and it is easy to see why. I am so proud to welcome Tetsuro here to the Citadel, and so happy Citadel audiences will get a chance to see his touching solo performance. Our thanks to Donna Yamamoto and Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre for bringing this beautiful production to the Citadel. This story, like all of the stories in our season, is a great illustration of the concept of ubuntu – “I am, because you are” – exploring the intrinsic connection we all share from all sides of the globe. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family. Enjoy the show!
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. ABOUT THE COMPANY Founded in 2001, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre first began as a community theatre. Over the next 12 years, VACT collaborated with over 500 Asian Canadian theatre artists in over 40 productions. In 2013, Donna Yamamoto was appointed as Artistic Director. Thus began VACT’s rapid transformation from a community theatre to one of the most exciting diversity-mandated professional theatre companies in Canada. In 2014, VACT’s co-production with The Frank Theatre of Ga Ting by Chinese Canadian playwright Minh Ly was a world premiere of a new Canadian work. In October 2015, Empire of the Son was presented as part of The Cultch’s 2015/16 season to unanimous critical praise. In Spring 2016, VACT premiered Dirty Old Woman by Chinese Canadian playwright Loretta Seto, in The Cultch’s official season with a sold-out run. Empire of the Son has toured nationally to Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, St. John’s, Saint John, Calgary, and Edmonton. Empire of the Son was developed with the assistance of PTC.

24 CITADEL THEATRE 2017/18 SEASON
ARTISTIC PRODUCER’s Notes I was absolutely thrilled when Daryl Cloran reached out to Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre to present Empire of the Son in the Citadel’s season. What an honour to be working with leaders like Daryl Cloran and former ED Penny Ritco who share an artistic vision similar to our theatre company: sharing stories from different communities and cultures and producing innovative new works. Let the storytelling begin. – Donna Yamamoto
PLAYWRIGHT’s Notes When we first started building ‘Empire,’ I rather presumptuously urged the designers, “make everything tour-able!” I was a bit naïve at the time regarding how things actually worked in Canadian theatre. I wasn’t aware that remounts of Canadian plays are in fact exceedingly rare. So my team gently advised me, “let’s wait for the reviews to come in shall we?” Thanks to their exceptional craftsmanship, Empire of the Son did in fact go on to tour, not once, but now twice. This is more than I could have ever expected. Thank you for being here to help us celebrate such gorgeous luck. – Tetsuro Shigematsu
DIRECTOR’s Notes It was a great pleasure working with Tetsuro Shigematsu on the creation of Empire of the Son. Being involved in the making of this performance has offered up many nuanced insights into living, dying, laughter and tears – the essence of human self-reflection. I’d like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the project’s many collaborators – such is the beauty of theatre. Finally, I’d like to offer a special thank you to Bahareh, Mika, Taizo, Akira, Yoshiko, and the entire Shigematsu family for sharing a story that’s at once so wonderfully singular and reassuringly universal. – Richard Wolfe EMPIRE OF THE SON 25

It was 44 years ago that the seed was planted on April 6th, 1974 in the small English coastal town of Brighton. An obscure group, known only in their native Sweden, won the Eurovision Song Contest with a ditty titled Waterloo. And so the improbable saga began. The next morning, the entire continent was talking about the jovial, spangle-clad, disco-ready Swedes who looked as if they had been dreamed up in the Jim Henson creature shop. The phenomenal success of ABBA (taken from the names of the group members Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Andersson & Ulvaeus) gathered force, as an avalanche might. Hit after hit followed as their success grew to mythical proportions. Critics didn’t like them much but international audiences did and almost immediately sent such hits as SOS and Dancing Queen to the top of the charts. Over the next eight years, they generated countless singles, platinum albums, and sell-out concerts. In all, they sold somewhere north of 360 million records. And the hits just kept on comin’ – The Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me... They scored eight consecutive #1 albums. And then in 1982 – it was all over. The cracks were showing – professionally and personally. The four were romantically linked but the strain of unending touring began to tell and the couples split up. On New Year’s Eve 1982, they sang Happy New Year on a Swedish television program. It was the last song they were ever to sing together. Years later, they turned down an offer of $1 billion to come together for one grand concert. Said Björn at the time: “I would rather leave our fans with the image of us as we were.”

could always get so much information into only two verses and “Youa chorus. Like a story told within that framework. ” But the songs of the four crinkly Swedes just wouldn’t go away. Ten years after the breakup, a compilation, ABBA GOLD, mounted the top of the charts. Their songs appeared on the sound tracks of movies like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Muriel’s Wedding. Whole new generations of fans began to buy records.
If you listen closely to the lyrics of ABBA tunes, you’ll note that Andersson and Ulvaeus were not just rhyming “moon, June, and spoon.” The songs are catchy and addictive – full of big hooks, bridges, and ear-worm tunes that just don’t stop. They are also mini-epics full of genuine emotion and compressed, but effective, stories of love, loss, and life. It is amazing how much power the two were able to pack into three-and-a-half minutes of a pop song. The Winner Takes It All, easily expands to become a compelling power ballad. Wordspinner Tim Rice, no slouch at penning lyrics himself (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat/Jesus Christ Superstar) once told the duo: “You could always get so much information into only two verses and a chorus. Like a story told within that framework. I was never able to do that – I had to do it over an entire musical.” It was British producer Judy Craymer who had the genius to spot the possibility inherent in the songs. Her dream was to create something,

possibly a movie or stage show, that could bring the dramatic resonance of the songs into a workable format. She felt that the songs had an integrity and obviously remained fresh and vital in the minds of a huge international audience. It took her a decade. One of her first steps was to hire English playwright Catherine Johnson to write the book. They found their inspiration in the most unlikely of places – a semi-successful 1968 Gina Lollobrigida film called, Buena Sera, Mrs Campbell. They painstakingly went through the entire ABBA catalogue selecting songs that sounded as if they could have been written specifically for the production – hopefully to avoid the reputation of most jukebox musicals where the cast abandons the (usually skimpy) plot to break into a song that has nothing to do with what was going on. Ulvaeus (who, along with Andersson, worked on the production) maintains that the lyrics were not tampered with. Nothing was re-written so it would fit with the book. The plot has to do with a kid named Sophie who lives with her mother on a Greek Isle. She is getting married and wants her long-absent father to walk her down the aisle. But who is her Dad? Sophie secretly reads her mother’s diary finding that, apparently, Mom was something of a swinger in her youth and, one memorable summer, had affairs with three different men. So Sophie invites all three to come to the wedding and the fun begins when all three prospective Dads show up. So all right, it’s not Long Day’s Journey ... but it was an appealing story and a surprisingly sturdy vehicle on which to hang the songs. The playwright made sure the dramatic structure was pretty solid. She was a single mother

herself. “I wanted to write about a single mother who got her life together and the relationship she had with her daughter whom she adored but fought with.” But even then she wasn’t sure about the project – she told The Guardian that she took the job out of desperation and was paid no money beyond the original commission. And so, during the years when the show was coming together, she was desperately looking for a real job in the theatre. Their research led to a promising discovery: many of the early ABBA songs were more innocent, naive and teen-oriented – whereas later they were more mature and reflective of the rocky emotional road the group themselves were going down. And of course, it was women who sang the songs. “Buena Sera, Mrs. Campbell was just waiting for the songs to come,” observed Johnson. Without knowing it, Andersson and Ulvaeus had written the music for a musical comedy.
audience went wild. They were literally out of their “The seats and singing and dancing in the aisles. ” When the two women were joined by director Phyllida Lloyd, a female trio was forged and the synergy was complete.
On March 23, 1999 Mamma Mia! was presented to its first-ever paying audience in London. “We had no idea how it was going to be received,” reflects Craymer.

She need not have worried. “The audience went wild. They were literally out of their seats and singing and dancing in the aisles.” And they still are. Since that night, 30 million people have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music. Mamma Mia! has set attendance records all over the world. The movie (with Meryl Streep) vaulted up the box office figures to become the most successful movie musical ever released. When it closed on Broadway, it was the eighth-longest running musical on the Great White Way. It’s still playing in London. In his last year as artistic director of the Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops, before he came to Edmonton to accept the same position at the Citadel, Daryl Cloran was looking for a good solid commercial hit to financially anchor his season. He came up with Mamma Mia! Good choice. The production sold out. So what better choice to provide a similar charge for his first season at the Citadel? To direct, he selected Ashlie Corcoran. She is the Canadian artistic director of two theatre companies and a much in-demand freelance director. Her distinctive mark has been left on several operas (The Magic Flute/Don Giovanni) and many stage productions ranging from The Gay Heritage Project to Me and My Girl. Speaking to Foreshadowing by e-mail, she admits that in the early 2000s, she was one of Mamma Mia! audience members who leapt to her feet and and danced in the aisles. Her enthusiasm for her upcoming gig is as infectious as the music itself. “It’s a piece of pure, unadulterated theatrical joy. I can’t wait to share this wonderful romp with Edmonton audiences,” she says. Edmonton performers in the production include John Ullyatt, Patricia Zentilli, Corben Kushneryk, Katrina Cox, and Ashley Wright. Observes Mamma Mia! original producer Judy Craymer: “Mamma Mia! may be universal in appeal but audiences are having an experience particular to each of them. They are seeing themselves on stage – a mother and daughter relationship, the rekindling of an old romance, someone losing someone and finding them again. This is a show about real people in real situations and the glue that holds it all together is a wonderful pop score that provided the soundtrack for the lives of a generation.” Mamma Mia! is the next Maclab stage production at the Citadel.
