Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Fight Night! Fight Night is the first production in our brand new Highwire Series of programming. We have created Highwire as a collection of experiences for the “theatrically adventurous” – and it includes engaging, immersive work by artists from Edmonton and around the world.
To kick things off, we’re so excited to welcome Belgium’s incredibly innovative Ontroerend Goed and their truly interactive production that has played all over the world. As you read this, you’re no doubt also holding a voting device and wondering how the evening will unfold. Fight Night is a unique production, which changes every night based on how the audience votes. We decided to program Fight Night during the federal election, because we thought it was the perfect time to be asking questions about democracy and the power of a vote. You have the ability to affect the outcome of the production! Your vote matters! Or does it? No matter how you vote, I know this production will engage you in a really unique, literally “hands on” way! Thanks so much for joining us on this theatrical adventure, and for supporting live theatre in Edmonton. We hope you’ll join us throughout the season for more exciting and innovative theatrical experiences! Sincerely, PS – Make sure you get your tickets for the U.K. smash hit, Six, playing here November 1-24. The Citadel is the only theatre in Canada you can see Six at before it heads to Broadway in early 2020! Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory
and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create, and perform on this territory. DIRECTOR’S Notes
Your vote. So many people fight for it. So many promises are made to obtain it.
And yet it feels so small. Such a tiny contribution. A seemingly insignificant voice muffled by the turmoil of the powers that be. I’ve been all kinds of voters. A frustrated one, consciously abstaining, too lazy to go, a fervent one, a social one, a strategical one. But more and more I became fascinated by the extent to which my choice was manipulated on so many levels. Not only by the politicians themselves or by the media. All sorts of little things in my immediate or far away surroundings had an impact on my vote. What it mostly boiled down to, is the feeling that made me say: ‘I trust this person.’ A trust that seemed to be of my own making. I trusted this one person in politics. He seemed intelligent and somebody who could represent me in the political field. When he appeared on television he said things that made sense. Whether it was in a game show or political talk show I can’t remember (the distinction has become blurrier day by day). It’s a feeling I share with many Trump-supporters today. You trust your own judgment so well, you rarely question what it’s really based upon. Until I took a closer look at his views during rehearsals for this show and I was amazed how different our views were on so many levels.
22 CITADEL THEATRE 2019/20 SEASON
How the things I cared about were not even mentioned in his political programme. I still trust the guy. He is a strong politician. He just doesn’t get my vote anymore. There is this other person whose programme I share completely. She doesn’t get enough votes to really matter in Belgian politics, but I believe the votes she gets, keep her going. Because my vote matters to her and she matters to her party and the party influences decisions in a country, the country has a say in the European Union and maybe the powers beyond that are kept in check just a little bit more. A chain of influence that can alter the world. Eight years under Romney would be a different world; a Canada led by Trudeau resonates even in our country; a referendum in Britain has altered the course of history. I remember when we performed the show in London, there was this 80-year-old man who started shouting to younger people who were giving up their device, who were giving up their vote. “Don’t do it. People have fought for this!” he shouted. I’m probably going to be like him. – Alexander Devriendt

JOE BEIGHTON HAD A PROBLEM. As producer of the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society, he had just been awarded a venue at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe. Not only did he not have a show, but the Society had been running in the red at the Fringe for years (having to pay punishing rights for established musicals). His solution: write an original. He immediately shared his problem with fellow member actor/writer Toby Marlow. Marlow came up dry. Photo by Liz Lauren, courtesy of Chicago Shakespeare Theater

FIGHT NIGHT 25
FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Marlow, a 24-year-old student, was deep into his studies. One afternoon when his classwork turned to the poet William Blake and he was idly looking at the words at the top of his paper (“Practical Criticism”), he had an epiphany. As he told The Standard in 2018, “there was me, two other students and a professor... and my mind went somewhere else.” He began scribbling words onto the worksheet, “what if there is a girl group? They have microphones and cool dresses and dance routines. It’s like a pop concert and they are pop stars. OMG! OMG! I need Lucy! I need Lucy!” Immediately after the class he breathlessly phoned “Lucy.” Lucy Moss (also 24) grew up in Ealing, West London and came from a non-musical family. Her father was a fund manager – her mother a tax expert. On the other hand, Marlow’s parents studied at the Royal Academy of Music and, at the age of nine, he became a child actor with a notable career. The two met at Cambridge where Moss was establishing a reputation as a burgeoning director and Marlow was auditioning for a role in one of her shows. “I thought she was brilliant,” says the star-struck Marlow. As Moss remembers it, “I was getting cash at the cashpoint to go back to the bar and drink loads of pints.” They collaborated in Hot Gay Time Machine which went on to win a Fringe award. They co-wrote Six while studying for their final exams at Cambridge. “We wrote at the uni fueled by Domino’s and Prosecco,” remembers Marlow.

SIX IT SOUNDED LIKE A FUN IDEA. LET’S TRY IT AND “ HAVE A BIT OF FUN AT THE FRINGE WITH SOME FRIENDS.

Apparently, at first Moss was not swept away by Marlow’s concept. “I remember thinking that this could be so bad,” she observed in an interview. But she trusted Marlow’s writing abilities, observing, “all I had to do was to make sure it was not crap.” Beighton, speaking to Foreshadowing from his flat in London, remembers being intrigued. “It sounded like a fun idea. Let’s try it and have a bit of fun at the Fringe with some friends.” (Beighton became the music supervisor – a position he still holds today). Like Come From Away and The Drowsy Chaperone before it, Six turned out to be the little snowball that began rolling down the hill getting bigger all the time. Says Beighton, “we sold out every night. Each day we would tell ourselves, ‘Well that’s it. Audiences will begin to fall off.’ But they never did.” Big time producers showed up to see what the fuss was all about. Mere months later, sitting in (producer) Kenny Wax’s London office, Moss learned that her project was coming to the West End. Looking at the billboards for Les Miz across the street, she remembers thinking, “we have gone too far.”

Well no you didn’t, Lucy. On December 18 , 2017, the production opened in the West End. An album was released – which received literally millions of plays on Spotify. Six premiered at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2019. Enthused the Chicago Tribune, “aside from its sense of humour and spirited radicalism, the greatest asset of Six is the way it understands a complex historical paradox.” The New York Times burbled, “Six blows out the amps with pop-historical hysteria.” th
Trying to put his finger on the success of his little amateur project, Beighton concludes, “it had never really been done before – this kind of tackling of feminist issues. We wanted to showcase six women in a very contemporary kind of way using the stories of women from a long time ago. These are very empowered women, singing and dancing, and performing roles that didn’t demand a man on stage. It’s also a show that is hard to resist. The songs are truly catchy, the comedy hilarious and the staging is pretty spectacular as well. I think our success shows that audiences have been waiting for a show like this.” “Take your phones out,” suggests Anne of Cleves shortly before Six’s selfie-friendly megamix finale. “You’re gonna want to film this.” The result of the Marlow/Moss writing

SIX frenzy during university finals is that, in some timeless celestial venue, all six wives of history’s worst husband are competing in a Simon Cowell-type popularity contest as to who had the worst deal as Henry’s wife. The put-upon ladies, calling themselves the “ExWives” and perhaps best remembered in the childhood rhyme, “Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded, survived,” strike out across the centuries in a kind of youth-oriented, kick-ass, laceratingly funny, Spice Girls-powered agglomeration of power ballads, rock and roll, electro, anthemic pop. Tricked out in punkish costume versions of Tudor styles, they swank about the stage in a formidable synchronized formation of defiant self-possession as they vie for the crowd’s approval. You may be vaguely familiar with the stories but they have never been told with such ferocity as here. This is no scholarly attempt to right a centuries-long wrong, but a let ‘er loose, lung-challenging mashup of styles and storytelling: persuasive, lucid and gloriously confident. It’s time for musical reparations – as they say in the show, “every Tudor rose has its thorns” and this sextet of singing/dancing sister/wives are the ladies to do it. Catherine of Aragon starts off by recounting her marriage to the rotund Tudor tyrant and the annulment that followed when he started lusting after that minx, Anne Boleyn. Anne delivers her story of the true love that ended with having her head cut off. (“Don’t lose ur head,” she warns in song, ignoring her own advice.) Then Jane Seymour takes over, wearing her heartbreak on her sleeve: “I was the only one he truly loved,” she wails. Proclaims Seymour,

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean “I stood by him despite all his faults,” as she sings “Heart of Stone.” She asks, “What hurts more than a broken heart?” “A severed head,” retorts Boleyn. Henry marries Anne of Cleves who complains that, after she was annulled she was forced to live in the sumptuous digs of Richmond Castle. Catherine Howard is the next to be dispatched and her acidtongued fellow “Ex-Wives” pounce calling her “the least relevant Catherine.” Catherine Parr, obviously a bottom-line kind of girl, puts a relevance to the whole evening, questioning if being remembered only as Henry’s wives – rather than what they actually did, is really the way to being “crowned” as leader of the pack in her song, “I Don’t Need Your Love.” The whole evening leads the group to realize they must find their own “happy ever after.” In 2018, Citadel Artistic Director Daryl Cloran went to London. It was to participate in the opening of Hadestown in London’s West End. As anyone who reads this column will know, it was Cloran’s patient cajoling (and downright chutzpah) that brought that production to the Citadel for a spectacularly successful out-of-town tryout last year – as the producers acknowledged on the stage during last year’s Tony celebrations. While there, Cloran met with a number of producers in an attempt to land another co-production deal that would benefit the Citadel and perhaps give a promising production a lift. “It assisted a lot to say that the Citadel helped develop a show which is playing right now in your national theatre. It gave us instant credibility.” Cloran’s British initiative worked in spectacular fashion. He attracted the comic smash, Peter Pan Goes Wrong – more on that later this year. And Six. “I was quite familiar with the production and its great success in the West End (...and having seen the West End production), I had no doubt that there was a fantastic future ahead for it. I knew the plan was to take it to Broadway, and I suggested that it might be helpful if they brought it to the Citadel in the fall.” He hoped the show might prove to be a hit (of Hadestown proportions) here and “…provide another opportunity for Edmonton artists to shine.” Six was designed by its creators to be light, even silly, but nonetheless the feisty females’ stories coalesce into a serious discussion about victimhood and survival. The show will open in Edmonton November 1st in the Shoctor Theatre on its way to an opening in Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre on March 12, 2020.

BIOS ONTROEREND GOED (Or “OG”) produces self-devised work grounded
in the here and now, inviting their audiences to participate as well as observe. They first emerged on the international scene in 2007, with The Smile Off Your Face, a one-onone show in which the audience is tied to a wheelchair and then blindfolded. Their hit show Once and for all we’re gonna tell you who we are so shut up and listen, was an uncompromising celebration of raw teenage energy on stage. With every new piece of work, Ontroerend Goed provides an intense experience constructed in reality; life goes on during the performance. The company has won numerous awards across Europe, including STUK-prijs (2003), Fringe Firsts (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2019), Herald Angel (2008, 2009), Total Theatre Award (2007, 2008, 2012), Three Weeks Editors Award (2007), Stage Award for Best Ensemble (2014). OG performs in Dutch, English and French, and has hit New York, Sydney, Hong Kong, Toronto and London to critical acclaim. Their work is currently being ‘staged’ in countries around the world; they perform their own work, and have successful local remakes in Istanbul, Moscow and Shanghai. Ontroerend Goed is Alexander Devriendt, David Bauwens, Joeri Smet, Wim Smet, Charlotte De Bruyne, Karen Van Ginderachter, Karolien De Bleser, Babette Poncelet, Aurélie Lannoy and Angelo Tijssens. They are currently associated artists in residence at Vooruit Arts Centre in their hometown Ghent, Belgium. In 2015 Oberon Books published All Works And No Plays, in which Ontroerend Goed explores different forms to convey a theatrical experience on paper. Each performance has its own way of approaching the audience, so each text has its own way to address the reader. This book is not made to turn the page and document the performances as a past experience, but for people to use it as a tool. A tool to play, adapt, oppose, relive, challenge and inspire. It contains 9 blueprints of shows by Ontroerend Goed. Amongst them are: The Smile off Your Face; Internal; A Game of You; Once and for all...; Teenage Riot; All That is Wrong; Audience; A History of Everything and Fight Night. This year, Oberon Books has released the company’s latest publication, Pieces of Work. ‘The most consistently challenging theatre-makers of the past decade.’
