Welcome to Fortune Falls! Catalyst Theatre is one of the most innovative theatre companies in Canada, and we are lucky enough to have them as the resident company right here in the Maclab Theatre! Every time I see a Catalyst production, I am blown away by the vision and bold artistry of the show. Catalyst’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Christenson, was recently short-listed for the very prestigious Siminovitch Prize, which recognizes the most exciting directors in Canada. It is no wonder this small company from Edmonton has toured their work nationally and internationally to enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. I got a sneak peek at Fortune Falls a couple of months ago when it played in Calgary at Alberta Theatre Projects, and it is spectacular – filled with Catalyst’s trademark invention and haunting music and choreography. We are proud to partner with Catalyst Theatre on this truly exciting new Canadian production. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family and supporting live theatre in Edmonton. Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS - Next up in our season is the Pulitzer Prize winning Disgraced. It’s a great play – smart and spiky, and full of challenging questions about faith and race relationships in contemporary North America. If you like great writing, great characters and an emotionally charged night at the theatre – this is for you!

Canada’s Catalyst Theatre creates bold, distinctive and highly theatrical productions – ‘Made-In-Edmonton’ work that is presented across Canada and around the world. The company’s core creative team strives for the unexpected, seeking out innovative ways to tell powerful stories through the inventive and playful use of evocative music, haunting sound, poetic text, dynamic choreography and surreal design. Welcome to Catalyst’s first full production in our new home, the freshly renovated Maclab Theatre! It’s been quite the journey to get here, and we’re so grateful to all our funders, supporters and donors who helped us on this long (carpet sample-filled) path. Last season, we diligently toiled away in a temporary office in the Citadel’s administrative hub upstairs to complete this renovation project and to prepare for this very busy season. You may have noticed that the renovations go beyond the theatre itself, extending into the lobby with our beautiful new bar, and our cozy and contemporary office space. But that’s not all we had cooking last year – we were working toward this very moment – the unveiling of our newest work, Fortune Falls, on stage in front of our hometown audience. As the past year has been one of transition, it only seems fitting that we would be inspired by a story about a young man and a town also facing major changes. In addition to working on Fortune Falls, we’ve also been planning a tour of our biggest production yet. Vigilante, which premiered as part of The Citadel’s 2015 season in this very space, will hit the road in February and the eight Donnellys, together with their band of five rabble-rousing musicians, will haunt the stages of the Grand Theatre in London (ON), Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon, and finally the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. It’s an exciting tour and we’re so grateful for our partners and funders who are helping us share this Made-In-Edmonton production with audiences across the country. Now as we settle into our new home, inspiration is already bubbling for our next production. Be sure to stay in touch through social media and our newsletter so you get all the exciting details. If you’re a fan of our work, and are interested in supporting our next local project, please join us at our yearly fundraiser Over the Edge With 4 Play on April 28th – you can find details on our website (www.catalysttheatre.ca). Now get comfortable in that brand new seat and enjoy the show!

...the play is a stinging swipe at “the fallacy of a post-racial nation. Besides, with the success of his taut and powerful Disgraced, he’s become something of a spokesman for the deep societal rifts he addresses in the play and he’s modestly uncomfortable with that. “I think that part of it is dealing with expectations that I am some sort of philosopher. I think I may disappoint some people when I am called to respond.” He told the Guardian newspaper in 2013 when Disgraced opened its long and successful run in London, “I can’t be a spokesman for anything other than my own concerns. I have to be free to wrestle with my own preoccupations and if I’m bringing any political awareness to the process, that mitigates my freedom. I also believe that at a subtle level, it’s perceived by the audience.” That doesn’t mean, judging from our conversation, he is not a keen passionate observer and commentator on the society in which he finds himself. As David Rooney observed in the Hollywood Reporter, “...the play is a stinging swipe at the fallacy of a post-racial nation.” In 2005, Akhtar, the American-born son of two Pakistani doctors who immigrated to America in the 1960’s, wrote and starred in a film The War Within, the fictional story of a

Pakistani student who becomes a radicalized terrorist. He then wrote a well-received novel, American Dervish, which concentrated on the Muslim religious experience in America. You may have seen him in a straight acting role in HBO’s excellent take on the Wall Street bailout, Too Big to Fail. So he came to Disgraced no stranger to the literary and dramatic world – or to themes of cultural alienation. The play, which went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and is the next production on the mainstage of the Citadel, is his biggest hit to date. It might be regarded as coming from what has been termed the “imploding dinner party” school of drama – that is, a group of people gather in a living room for an evening of civil conversation. There are already tensions in the air when the evening starts and everything goes south from there. Regular Citadel goers may be reminded of such productions as God of Carnage, Other Desert Cities and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The success of Disgraced, while driven by Akhtar’s acute dramatic flair and precise manipulation of emotion and character, might be largely due to current resonances in today’s society – particularity in the light of recent terrorist attacks, the war in Syria and the American election. It trades in the often dormant but very real tensions between the faith of our fathers and the world that we live in today. Akhtar mixes in the complexity of identity, the pressures generated by the culture into which we are born and the way we change to

accommodate the culture in which we live. Unlike, say ...Virginia Woolf with its games of “humiliate the host, get the guests and hump the hostess,” which trades in martial discord, Disgraced finds its inspiration in today’s headlines – more succinctly in sociopolitical themes such as Islamaphobia and the often beleaguered and schizophrenic self-identity of Muslim-American citizens. Is it autobiographical? “No!” says Akhtar on the phone. “It is not autobiographical but it is not not autobiographical,” in that it may be based on his life experiences but his characters have a life of their own. Disgraced asks whether Americans – or by extension, any members of western society, must renounce their “other cultural identities to gain mainstream acceptance.” Amir Kapoor is deep into the American dream, a Master of the Universe in his sumptuous but discretely tasteful Manhattan apartment. He is a U.S. born, Muslim raised, merger and acquisitions specialist in a Jewish law firm. Somewhat like George Orwell’s Winston Smith in 1984, he has learned to love “big brother” by abandoning his “otherness” to gain mainstream acceptance. He feels the Islam of his childhood is a “backward way of thinking and being” and has supplanted it with a belief in American capitalism. But like the Jesuits who once famously observed, “Give us a child until he is seven and we’ll have him for the rest of his life,” he finds that turning his back on his beliefs is not quite so simple. time public defender, he has been grudgingly enlisted to consult on a case to defend an American Imam who is accused of helping Hamas. He’s not happy with the idea – and neither is his staunchly Jewish firm where he is on track to become a partner. His ordered life begins to unravel. Amir’s gorgeous WASPish wife, Emily, is a painter who is entranced by the historic and expressive art of the East. Her latest work is a Valasquez-inspired portrait of her husband as a Moorish servant. While exploring Islam in art she has come to appreciate the “beauty and wisdom of the Islamic tradition,” and has taken to questioning her husband’s new found and unmoored philosophical and moral attitudes. Joining them for an intimate supper are Jory, an African-American woman who is an upwardly mobile newcomer in Amir’s legal firm and her husband, Isaac, who takes a relaxed view of his Jewishness. He is critical of modern Israel’s bristling military attitudes and loves a good bit of pork. An art gallery curator, he is interested in mounting Emily’s eastern influenced art in the Whitney. He also shows an interest in doing the same thing to Emily. The evening starts on roiling seas that soon turn tempestuous. After a few glasses of expensive Scotch, the talk turns to the hot button issues of religion and politics. Not a good idea with this group. Amir, the apostate, when pushed finds his long-buried beliefs emerging. Isaac brings the smug condescension of a man not used

to self-examination. He observes grandly, “Islam is rich and universal. Part of a spiritual and artistic heritage we all can draw from.” Amir may have referred to the Qur’an as “one very long hate mail letter to humanity,” but yet bristles when Issac expresses an opinion about the differences between Islam and “Islamo-fascism.” Pushed, Amir admits to an “unexpected blush of pride” in the efficiency and success of the 9/11 attacks. Isaac spits out that he is a “closet jihadist.” The more Isaac chimes in with his display of liberal selfrighteousness – the more aggressively opinionated Amir becomes – unknowingly exhibiting how self-loathing and denial have destroyed his sense of identity. A fierce debate over the rise of Islamic terrorism and the meaning of the tenants of the Qur’an and the Talmud, racial profiling, Ahmadinejad and Netanyahu explodes into a jolting scene of violence. Some critics have suggested that Akhtar’s characters tend to be mouthpieces for the playwright – a variation of the old vaudeville trope, “A Jew, an Arab, a Black and a White meet for a drink in a bar....” which causes Akhtar to bristle on the phone, while maintaining that his characters are far more than talking heads. One Chicago critic did note that the play is a “minefield – that feels all too deliberately booby-trapped by the playwright,” but the critics are almost universal in their celebration of the play. Charles Isherwood in the New York Times noted that Disgraced “...bristles with wit and intelligence putting contemporary attitudes toward religion under a microscope.” And lest prospective Citadel patrons are beginning to feel they are in for an evening of academic polemics rather than just good theatre, Entertainment Weekly observed, “Akhtar packs a lot into his scenes.” One Australian critic opined that the play is “a smart, spiky entertainment” full of ideas and that “Akhtar so effectively drives his dramatic density that I was surprised the play had ended just before the 90 minute mark.” Although the playwright is willing to discuss the moral and philosophical ideas behind his play he is unwilling to go too far, saying that he likes to leave directors and audiences to “make some discoveries on their own.” Citadel patrons will have their chance to discover the challenges and dramatic joys of Disgraced when it begins on the Shoctor stage January 21.

Akhtar so effectively drives his “dramatic density that I was surprised the

play had ended just before the 90 minute mark.
