HENRY HOLE, 1884 – 1954 On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole.

The Citadel Theatre is proud to honour Henry Hole’s integrity, compassion and leadership in the dedication of this complex to his memory.

One leisurely afternoon in July of 1862, Dodgson took a picnic lunch and embarked on a boating tour on the Thames near Oxford. With him were three of the daughters of Oxford Dean Henry Liddell and his wife Lorina. The middle girl, named Alice, who was 10 at the time, asked him to tell a story and he did, naming the heroine, “Alice.” The girl was charmed and asked Dodgson to write it down. He did that too – subsequently publishing it, under the name of Lewis Carroll, as Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There followed shortly thereafter and they were a great success. Dodgson was to become something of an unofficial children’s storyteller to the nation – at one point spinning tales to Queen Victoria’s grandchildren.

The books have never been out of print. Although originally written for children they have become regarded as literature – critical and philosophical works – rich in multiple meanings. They still inspire adults and children today including such tastemakers as Picasso, Walt Disney and director Tim Burton.

In 1994, Canadian poet/playwright James Reaney (The Donnellys) wrote a version of Through the Looking-Glass for the Stratford Festival. The Canadian playwright and the English mathematician were a great pairing across the years, sharing a love of ideas and an unquenchable imagination. Said Reaney, “We are still children. We haven’t lost that – we’re just an older version of our child selves. It resides inside us in many layers. Like a tree.”

The play was a success and so it was a natural idea for Stratford in 2014 to return to the Reaney/Carroll classic when looking for a vehicle for their family season. But rather than just remount the original, Stratford turned to director Jillian Keiley. Keiley is a Newfoundlander (a Siminovitch Prize winner and Artistic Director of English Theatre for the National Arts Centre) who had fashioned a formidable reputation for a creative approach to theatre. A long-time enthusiast of the works of Reaney, and intrigued by the possibilities offered by Carroll, she accepted the challenge offered by Stratford.

She immediately phoned Bretta Gerecke. Anyone who goes to theatre in Edmonton is familiar with the works of Bretta Gerecke. She has worked for many local companies (including multiple plays at the Citadel including West Side Story and Make Mine Love) but is probably best known for her memorable designs for Catalyst Theatre. She is called the

“resident designer” but, as Artistic Director Jonathan Christenson is quick to point out, her contributions are integral to that remarkable company’s world-wide successes. Says the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia, “She combines vision, bold theatrical instinct and inventiveness with unconventional, inexpensive materials.” Her costumes for Catalyst’s 2007 production of Frankenstein and 2009’s Nevermore were largely fashioned of paper held together with wire and glue. She designs sets, lights and costumes for productions small and big (including Cirque du Soleil).

The visionary director and the innovative designer decamped for an ocean-side hotel in Newfoundland, walked the beaches, hiked the coastline and spent hours talking, laughing and whooping while developing a whole new approach to a madly innovative, 150 year old tale of a 7 ½ year old girl who steps into an alternative universe behind a large mirror high atop a fireplace. Here, in a wonky chess board world, Alice is introduced to the Jabberwocky, the Walrus and the Carpenter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the somnolent Red King, his hyper active wife the Red Queen, a combative Lion and Unicorn, Humpty Dumpty and the White Knight.

Taking their inspiration from Carroll, the two probed further into a kind of world that can only be created on stage. “The book and

the stage play are really different,” offers Keiley. “The play doesn’t work like a regular play – just like the book doesn’t work like a regular book. In theatre what we really need to see is an enchanted journey. In the book things happen TO Alice – in the play we have to impose forward movement. Alice starts off a bit insecure but by the end she realizes she’s smart enough and good enough to be able to overpower the Red Queen. She wins the chess game but not before she goes through a hero’s journey. I loved the idea that it was Alice’s dream and it is we that construct our own dreams and nightmares. The concept we came up with was that everything comes out of Alice’s mind. It is a great fantastical vision of what would happen if a child designed the show.”

So Alice Through the Looking-Glass is a visually fantastic world where logic rules not, everything is fluid and elastic and all is set in the brightly hued colours of children’s drawings. handle bars of the bicycles of little girls (many of whom are boys). Jelly beans float down on the heads of audience members on tiny parachutes. Confetti cannons blast away. There is even a scary forest scene. One enthusiastic critic compared the helter-skelter, whateverworks experience to, “an upscale version of the one your own children present in the family room where too much is not a concern.”

Given the universal acceptance of the books, it is obvious that Carroll takes his readers to a land where adults and children can meet as equals. Keiley says, “I think, even in Carroll’s time, the book was made for adults. It’s a very sophisticated piece of work and there’s a lot of deeper philosophy in the book which we tried to capture with the play. If you look at it, it’s full of existentialism, ontology and a quest for God. So I tell my casts that the story must be told from the point of view of a 7 ½ year old – but we must maintain the sophisticated ideological thought in the play.”

Keiley not only directed the original production in Stratford, but successive ones in Ottawa and Winnipeg. Revival Director Christine Brubaker will be preserving Keiley’s artistic vision in the upcoming production here at the Citadel.

Although Alice Through the Looking-Glass is not a work in progress – it has been quite different in all of the venues where it is presented. The show is always cast locally. In the casting call, Keiley suggested performers need stamina (at two hours of going flat out it requires a lot of energy). “Patience is a virtue. A child’s heart is essential.”

“So far we’ve had very different Alices. In Winnipeg we had fantastic movers – really fine dancers so we were able to generate a lot of great physical action. We choreographed a bunch of stuff because we could.” In Edmonton, Alice is Ellie Heath, a busy local actress and Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts Program grad, who describes herself as a “vagabond drama queen travelling across Canada to act.” The rest of the cast is composed of the usual suspects of the Citadel’s resident company (John Ullyatt/Andrew MacDonald-Smith/Jesse Gervais, etc.).

Observes Keiley, “Edmonton has a fantastic tradition of improvisation. We expect the show will be funnier in Edmonton.”

ANDREW KUSHNIR Andrew Kushnir is an actor, playwright, and Creative Director of the Toronto-based company Project: Humanity. Produced plays include The Middle Place (2011 Toronto Theatre Critics Award Best Production, published by Playwrights Canada Press); The Gay Heritage Project (with Damien Atkins and Paul Dunn, 3 Dora nominations); and Small Axe (Globe&Mail’s Top 10 shows of 2015). Last fall, Andrew’s Ukrainian-Canadian drama Wormwood premiered at Tarragon Theatre, where he is Playwright-in-Residence. He has worked across Canada with companies including Theatre Network, Theatre Calgary, Teatro La Quindicina, The Vancouver Playhouse, Canadian Stage, The Shaw Festival, Studio 180, Western Canada Theatre, and Catalyst Theatre. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s BFA Acting program, a Loran Scholar, and a 2013 recipient of the U of A’s Alumni Horizon Award. THOMAS RYDER PAYNE Sound Designer

Thomas Ryder Payne is a Toronto based composer and sound designer. Starting as a songwriter with a 4-track recorder, Thomas has followed a varied musical career including studying with composer James Tenney, recording and touring for six years with the Juno nominated band Joydrop, and producing numerous records. Recent work has focused on theatre, dance and film, including designs for Kim’s Convenience and La Ronde (Soulpepper); The Matchmaker and Othello (Stratford); Someone Else and Middle Place (CanStage); The Little Years, If We Were Birds and Leo (Tarragon); and Everyday Anthems (Toronto Dance Theatre). He has also worked at NAC, Theatre Calgary, GCTC, Nightwood, YPT, Factory, Modern Times, Crows and many others. Thomas has received two Dora awards and twelve nominations.

J. Paul Halferty is lecturer in Drama Studies at University College Dublin. He has taught at York University, University of Toronto and Brock University, mainly in the areas of theatre history, acting, gender and sexuality studies. His work has been published in Theatre Research in Canada, Canadian Theatre Review, and in the anthology Queer Theatre in Canada. He is Associate Editor and contributor to TRANS(per)FORMING Nina Arsenault: An Unreasonable Body of Work, and is co-editor of the “Views and Reviews” section of Canadian Theatre Review.

His current book project is a history of gay theatre in Toronto from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s.
