HENRY HOLE, 1884 – 1954 On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole.

I saw an ageing John Lee Hooker play in Paris in the early 90’s at La Villette. He sat on a folding chair, a guitar across his lap and he “bellowed the blues.” It was a revelation. His rough voice and his unassuming way were so startling and captivating.

He sang of suffering and deliverance of love lost and found, and the crowd went wild.

I have had that same experience at gigs of Raoul and the Big Time. Whether it was at the Y2K New Year’s Eve gig where the band rocked the house even though none of us were sure what the world would be after midnight or the Katrina Relief gig where Raoul had brought a suddenly homeless Johnny Sansone up from New Orleans to play with the band but I remember feeling like I was witnessing life made manifest in the form of music. At its core the Blues is the music of life – life in all its hoary and glorious detail. Raoul has sought to capture that essence in this play. What I love about Raoul as an artist is his desire to capture life and make it manifest. Sometimes he does it as an actor and sometimes he does it as a musician and tonight he does it as a playwright and composer as well. Prepare to meet the Blues.

ROBBINS ACADEMY The Robbins Academy at the Citadel is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada.

BEVIN DOOLEY is a playwright, and a proud former member of the Robbins Academy Young Playwriting Company. She holds a BA in Drama from the University of Alberta. Since then, she has had several readings with the Young Companies, as well as one with Workshop West’s Springboard Festival.

The spirits rest uneasily along the Roman Line. Locals dismount and lead their skittish horses past the old Donnelly homestead. It is said that by the light of the moon on the anniversary of the slaughter, a woman dressed in black rides the Roman Line. There is something terribly wrong in the house itself – rebuilt after it was burned to the ground by the vigilantes. As Robert Norton, who bought the house in 1974, would later tell the Free Press, something strange was going on – something that terrorizes horses, causing them to bolt. An unseen ethereal force slams kitchen cupboard doors and causes things to disappear.

Robert and Linda Salts, the current owners, moved to the homestead in 1988. Robert, who says he possesses “a sensitivity to the paranormal,” was immediately aware of being watched. He is quoted in the book Haunted Ontario by Terry Boyle, “The feeling of being watched can occur anytime or anywhere on the property. It can suddenly come over you and you find yourself looking around expecting to see a pair of eyes staring in your direction.” Adventurers, seeking a psychic experience by spending a night in the barn, have felt the actual touch of something unseen. Most unnerving of all are the footsteps that approach through the hay on the floor only to...just... stop. There are times in the night when footsteps are heard on the back stairs of the old house. On three separate occasions, they have stopped and Robert Salts heard his name whispered into the darkness.

“But what made the Donnellys different was they were extremely tight knit – a solid entity known for their loyalty to each other.”

Two years ago, Jonathan Christenson, the prodigiously talented writer/director/composer/ lyricist of Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre spent an afternoon with Robert Salts listening to the tales of what happened on that awful night. They talked in the homestead that was re-built by the remaining Donnellys after the massacre. Out of that afternoon, Christenson has fashioned his latest work, Vigilante, opening in early March in the Maclab theatre.

The Donnelly clan left Tipperary, Ireland in the 1840’s looking for a new and better life in Canada. They squatted on (and later claimed) some land on the Roman Line, a road that ran past Concession six, Biddulph Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. The area was mostly settled by Roman Catholics who, unfortunately, brought with them the squabbles and hatreds that motivated them to move in the first place. The Donnellys were probably no worse than anyone else in the area but, says Christenson (who spent much of his youth in London, Ontario and is quite familiar with the oft-told stories of the “Black Donnellys”), “Lucan was not very law abiding in those years. It was a real ‘wild west’ place.” But what made the Donnellys different was they were extremely tight knit – a solid entity known for their loyalty to each other. They were also very charming. The kind of ‘bad boys’ that you

were drawn to, but afraid of, at the same time.” There were accounts of barn burnings, trespassing, verbal assaults, attempted murders, theft, robbery and assaulting a police officer. Years before that fateful night, patriarch James Donnelly was found guilty of beating a man to death and spent 7 years in jail. But, in the final accounting, the Donnellys were never found guilty of the charges brought against them, even if there is little doubt their heavy hand could be seen in the altercations.

On a cold February evening in 1880, a large group of vigilantes, fuelled by booze and hatred, and calling themselves “The Biddulph Peace Society” marched down the Roman Line. They had had enough. The law had shown that it couldn’t do anything. They were determined to rid the county of the Donnellys once and for all by murdering the entire family in one night.

The Peace Society was founded by an activist priest named Father John Connolly. He apparently had an abiding hatred for the Donnellys – attacking them from the pulpit, thundering, “an evil has fallen among the community.” (Actually, it turns out the Peace Society itself was guilty of many of the types of crimes attributed to the Donnellys). But when Patrick Ryder’s barn was burned to the ground, the society had enough. There was no evidence to link the Donnellys to the crime but on the evening of February 3rd, the bile and hatred that spent years bubbling away in its witch’s cauldron, boiled over. Arming

themselves with pitchforks, spades, wooden stakes and axes, the plotters gathered at one in the morning in the Cedar Swamp Schoolhouse. After drinking themselves into a state of frenzy, the mob spilled onto the Roman Line and marched toward the Donnelly homestead.

Locals report they could be clearly heard in the still night. Except by their victims – who were all asleep.

What followed was nasty, loud and bloody. At the end, James Donnelly, his beloved wife Johanna, his son Tom and niece Bridget were bludgeoned to death, set afire and left in the ashes of their house. Another son, John, lay dead in a separate incident that night. Spared in the house was courageous young Johnny O’Connor, a neighbour, who had been hired to help the Donnellys. The mob didn’t know he was there. O’Connor ran upstairs and hid under a bed watching the entire proceedings. Later he was able to identify many of the butchers. He saw their faces and described what they wore in graphic detail. Later, at a heavily weighted trial led by Donnelly adversaries and political opportunists, his testimony was ruled inadmissible. No one has ever been charged.

And so 133 years later, Jonathan Christenson sat down with Robert Salts in the old Donnelly homestead on the very anniversary of the events themselves. The house was filled with Donnelly memorabilia and Salts turned out to be a natural storyteller. They later went into the barn where entities have been detected by many visitors. Remembers Christenson,

“It wasn’t the original barn but it certainly was of the period. It was a very cloudy day – the weather was grim and grey. It was an amazing place – all ancient barn wood. Dust hangs in the air. The light streams through the cracks. I thought this is a place where this kind of story could be told.”

Many people feel that the Donnellys never got their day in court – legally or metaphorically.

“The history of the murders has been told mostly by the perpetrators. I decided to give the Donnellys a voice.” Christenson’s premise is that the Donnellys are existentially caught in a kind of limbo and can’t find peace until they can be heard. There will be some tweaking of history in the Catalyst production. The story is much too spread-out and complex for a simple documentary approach. (Not that we would expect a documentary approach from the man who has given us stage versions of Frankenstein, Hunchback, the life of Edgar Allen Poe and other atmospheric productions probing the gothic canon.) The tale goes all the way back to Ireland, through the chaotic years in Lucan leading to the massacre and the trials and other events that followed. So, Christenson’s key to theatricalizing that night of terror and revenge was to tap into those restless spirits seeking redress. The story, which has become a legend, will be told by the shade of one of the brothers – who, Christenson admits, turns out to be something of an unreliable narrator himself. “I’m trying to tell a story that explores the primal human emotions that bind families together. In many ways, the story is of the tragedy of Johanna Donnelly. Her husband and the boys loved her very much – they had a fiercely protective attitude toward her. No one could say anything wrong about their mother. She was a fighter.” (On that terrible night, it was Johanna, more than any other member of the family, that fought off the attackers.) “She set out to build a new life for her family in a new world and helped to destroy the very people she loved.”

Vigilante previews on March 7th in the Maclab Theatre, and runs through to March 29th. It will feature 8 actors whom the director chose because he was looking for performers that echo the Donnelly balance of charm and danger. There will also be music – but not of the twangy Stompin’ Tom variety. Christenson maintains he has written a “Rock Opera.”

Divine has a long history in musical theatre. Before releasing her first album she performed in several musicals. Starting at the age of 12 in a play called Rainbow World, which was written

by Salome Bey. Eventually she landed roles in such plays as Rent and Ain’t Miss Behavin. Recently she starred in Joy in the Morning, directed by Robin Givens. She has also worked on countless voice-overs, commercials and jingles. The last few years she has mainly focused on her music career. Her debut self-titled album The Divine Brown was awarded a gold certification and generated her first Juno Award nomination. Her sophomore album The Love Chronicles won her a Juno Award for best R&B Soul Album. She is now set to release her third album in 2015.

Chris is a Toronto-based freelance bass player. He currently plays and has recorded with Alex Pangman and Jake Chisholm and is also the leader of his own trio, The Chris Banks Trio. A Toronto/Halifax based musician, Tom has been the drummer for Life, Death and the Blues since its inception. A multiple Maple Blues Award Winner, Tom performs with Raoul and the Big Time, Jon Knight and Soulstack, as well as The Maple Blues Revue. Tom has worked with The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Powder Blues, Steve Lukather (Toto), Martha and the Muffins, Sue Foley, Jeff Healey, Colin James, Wilderness of Manitoba, and the Good Brothers. Highlights include an international drum festival appearance, drumming for Willie Big Eyes Smith, and re-recording “Echo Beach” with M+M. Guitar

An in demand session player on the Toronto jazz & blues scene, Chisholm earned a reputation as a talented and respected young vocalist/guitar player. Chisholm is the founder and leader of the popular blues band Jake and the Blue Midnights, who rapidly and deservedly gained the attention of Canada’s blues scene, performing at numerous club gigs and notable festivals around the country. There is a sincerity in Jake Chisholm’s music that is immediately identifiable, whether it’s his compelling vocals or his memorable guitar hooks.

Bonnie has received 14 Dora nominations and has won the award twice.

JASON GOLINSKY

Production Manager & Associate Lighting Designer Jason is in his third year as Production & Facilities Manager for Theatre Passe Muraille and has been the Toronto Fringe Festival PM since 2011, co-Production Managing in 2013 and 2014. Jason has also been the PM for the Next Stage Theatre Festival from its inception in 2008 until 2013. In Lighting Design, he has been the Associate for 2 Pianos 4 Hands in Canada, Japan, the UK and the US; Canadian Associate Lighting Designer for the Canadian production of Warhorse; Assistant Lighting Designer on multiple Mirvish productions and also on two seasons of Canadian Opera Company shows. Jason is an alumnus of the University of Alberta with a BFA in Technical Theatre, Stage Management.

Cameron is a projection designer from King City, ON. Selected credits for projection designer include CRASH (Theatre Passe Muraille); Watching Glory Die (Canadian Rep Theatre); The Gay Heritage Project (Buddies in Bad Times); Yukonstyle, Cruel and Tender (Canadian Stage); Beyond the Farm Show (Blyth Festival); Feng Yi Ting (Spoleto Festival USA/Lincoln Center Festival/ Luminato); Chile con Carne (Alameda Theatre); Card Table Artifice, Natural Magick (Magicana/Luminato). Born in Toronto, Richard has recently worked on The Art of Building a Bunker (Factory), Tartuffe, Twelve Angry Men, Angels In America (Soulpepper); Hay Fever (Stratford); Belleville (Company Theatre/CanStage); Tribes (Theatrefront/Canstage), Possible Worlds, This Hotel (Theatre Passe Muraille). Future endeavors include The Fun Palace Radio Variety Show (Small Wooden Shoe), The Other Place (CanStage). Feature film scores include The Anniversary, A Trip to The Island, Past Perfect. Richard is the winner of seven Dora Awards, the 1995 Harold Award, and was shortlisted for the 2012 Siminovitch Prize. He is the creator of @TOMayorFrod.

CANADA’S FIRST THEATRE FOR NEW WORK Founded in 1968, Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) is Canada’s first theatre company for developing and producing new Canadian work. Theatre Passe Muraille operates out of a designated historical building in the city of Toronto; the former Nasmith Bakery and Stables. But true to name, productions also take place “beyond walls” at site-specific locations across Toronto.

Theatre Passe Muraille is known for developing innovative and daring Canadian theatre, but they exist to support their communities.
