STUDENTS CLUB Another exciting season is upon us and we are pleased to welcome back over 1000 Students Club Members! The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving a different one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists each show. Following the performance, students are then invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. All of our pre-show presentations this year will be hosted by Edmonton’s own Patrick Lundeen and Jeremy Baumung. Both are wonderful multi-faceted artists who are regulars on the Citadel stage, being seen in productions such as Pride and Prejudice, The Wizard of Oz, Sweeney Todd, Beauty and the Beast, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and A Christmas Carol. Both are looking forward to sharing as much as they can with Edmonton’s young theatre audience.

Eugene Gladstone O’Neill 1888 – 1953
America’s First Major Playwright When Eugene O’Neill began writing for the stage early in the 20th century, the American theatre was dominated by vaudeville and romantic melodramas. Influenced by Strindberg, Ibsen, and other European playwrights, O’Neill vowed to create a theatre in America, stripped of false sentimentality, which would explore the deepest stirrings of the human spirit. In 1914, he wrote: “I want to be an artist or nothing.” During the 1920s, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for three of his plays — Beyond the Horizon, Anna Christie, and Strange Interlude. Other popular successes, including The Emperor Jones, The Hairy Ape, Desire Under the Elms, The Great God Brown, and Mourning Becomes Electra, brought him international acclaim. In 1936, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature — the only American playwright to be so honored. O’Neill experimented with new dramatic techniques and dared tackle such controversial issues as interracial marriage, the equality of the sexes, the power of the unconscious mind, and the hold of materialism on the American soul. In each of his plays, he sought to reveal the mysterious forces behind life which shape human destiny. Three of his final works tower over the others: The Iceman Cometh, Long Day’s Journey into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten. These autobiographical plays portray with faithful realism the haunting figures of his father, mother, and brother who loom in the background of most of his other plays. He was awarded a fourth Pulitzer Prize, posthumously, in 1956 for Long Day’s Journey into Night. In a career which spanned three decades, Eugene O’Neill changed the American theatre forever.
26 LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
Long Day’s Journey into Night is a drama in four acts written by American playwright Eugene O’Neill in 1941–42 but only published in 1956. The play is widely considered to be his masterwork. O’Neill posthumously received the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. The action covers a fateful, heart-rending day from around 8:30 am to midnight, in August 1912 at the seaside Connecticut home of the Tyrone’s — the semi-autobiographical representations of O’Neill himself, his older brother, and their parents at their home, Monte Cristo Cottage. Upon its completion in 1942, O’Neill had a sealed copy of the play placed in the document vault of publisher Random House, and instructed that it not be published until 25 years after his death. A formal contract to that effect was drawn up in 1945. However, O’Neill’s third wife, Carlotta Monterey, transferred the rights of the play to Yale University, skirting the agreement. The play was first published in 1956, three years after its author’s death.

Write about what you know. This is the ageless advice given to all playwrights. As painful as it must have been, Eugene O’Neill wrote about what he knew. His own family provided complex characters in extraordinary situations. Their attempts to reconcile their troubled existence inspired him to write Long Day’s Journey Into Night. He says he wrote it “with deep pity and understanding and forgiveness.” The piece was written from an intensely personal point of view, deriving directly from the scarring effects of his family’s tragic relationships – his mother and father, who loved and tormented each other; his older brother, who loved and corrupted him and died of alcoholism in middle age; and O’Neill himself, caught and torn between love and rage at all three. “None of us can help the things life has done to us. They’re done before you realize it, and once they’re done they make you do other things until, at last, everything comes between you and what you’d like to be, and you’ve lost your true self forever.” Mary Tyrone What I find striking is that the familial bond of love tempers the resentment and mollifies the rage. The numerous recriminations are followed immediately by apologies and forgiveness. I believe this familiar dynamic resonates with audiences making the play timeless and relevant. We all have families and it’s not always easy. Bob Baker 28 LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT

While still a teenager, he moved to New York to work with legendary puppet master Bil Baird. Baird won an Emmy for his work on PBS. Burkett once recounted, “While I was working in New York, an idea came into my head. I wanted to do my own marionette show. I was working with a professional company of puppeteers and everyone said, “Oh, no one does marionette shows anymore.’ One day I ran across an old puppeteer and he asked me what I wanted to do. I told him of my dream and he said, ‘take that piece of foam (the puppet I was working on) and go back home.’ So I did.” He returned home to Alberta and in the 1970’s was playing the streets with what he calls his “bag show” — a stage in a bag that he actually wore while performing. He did industrial work, TV commercials, children’s programs, night clubs, malls and military bases. In 1982, he brought his show Polly Pureheart to the first Edmonton Fringe. “I blame your darn city,” he told me. “You had to go ahead and have the first Fringe. I had this little puppet show and I came up here and met Brad Fraser and Stewart Lemoine. We were theatrical oddballs that did not fit in the legitimate scene but, suddenly, had this turf called the Fringe that was our own.” In those years, he just wanted to have fun and make us laugh. His shows were a family undertaking — he fashioned the characters while his mother helped with the costuming on the kitchen table.

But his creations were pulling him in a different direction. He began a quest to turn traditional objects of broad comedy into tiny figures that could project a full range of serious dramatic emotion. He founded the “Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes.” So he wrote, designed and performed his first strictly adult show. It was called Fools Edge and it premiered at the Edmonton Fringe in 1986. Burkett could be seen the whole time manipulating the strings, doing all the voices as well as all the moves. He occasionally interacted with the characters. But a strange thing happened: despite being in plain sight, he disappeared, and the tiny marionettes of wood, plaster, paint and fabric took on an inner life of their own. He had created a new art form. His later plays dealt with the holocaust, AIDS and aging. His most recent Penny Plain was a comedy that addressed the end of the world. Observed the showbusiness newspaper Variety simply, “Ronnie Burkett is the best puppeteer in the world.” The Citadel has played a major hand in furthering his international career. Works that saw their world premiere here have gone on to play houses as distinguished as London’s Barbican and the Sydney Opera House. With his new work The Daisy Theatre, inspired by the illegal underground “daisy” puppet shows staged in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, it appears Ronnie is returning to his roots

while inventing himself again. This new incarnation is a blend of music hall, cabaret, political commentary, audience participation and improvisation. Lots of improvisation. There will be new short playlets by ten Canadian playwrights written for Ronnie’s resident company of over 30 marionettes. Each performance will be different and daring. Ronnie wants to attract new theatregoers and young people so the show will run for a month in the intimate space of The Club — which used to be known as the Rice Theatre. The Daisy Theatre, an add-on to the regular season, previews on September 28.
The fact that you are sitting here tonight for one of the greatest plays ever written demonstrates that you have made an initial commitment to a season that promises an adventure in theatre going. In hopes that tonight’s experience will just whet your appetite for more, here is a quick look at what the Citadel has planned for us. Another add-on this season is, Do You Want What I Have Got? CBC wit, Vancouver’s Bill Richardson has been scouring the internet’s Craigslist for years looking for the most strange and weird objects offered on the big cyberspace bazaar. Indie musician Vida Hille was enlisted to write some music to Richardson’s words and the funny, funky little show, to everyone’s surprise, became a hit all over the country. The show is quirky, the listings often hilarious and the music hummable. Sub-headed A Craigslist Cantata, it previews February 5th.

We’ll be the last to see it because its two creators, Richard Greenblatt and Ted Dykstra, have decided to bring down the curtain on the show. Bob Baker persuaded Dykstra to return to his boyhood Edmonton home to mark the grand finale to a long and illustrious run. There is a lot of humour in Bruce Norris’ Broadway hit Clybourne Park but it is the humour that comes from sharply observed human relationships. Norris’ concept is to examine the changes in racial attitudes over fifty years in the United States using a single home as platform. In Act 1, the owners of a house are under pressure not to sell to a black family because, well, “there goes the neighbourhood.” In Act 2, the black owners are under similar pressures as they consider selling to a group of upper-class whites who have a plan to “gentrify” the neighbourhood. The show has been an international success, an audience and award magnet, winning a Tony, an Olivier and the Pulitzer Prize. It is interesting to note that the Disney folks have a new film coming out this Christmas about the making of their hit movie Mary Poppins. The film is called Saving Mr. Banks and it stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. I point this out because Mary Poppins herself will be levitating into the Citadel next March. The stage version is a bit different from the movie in that it more deeply develops the Banks character. “That Poppins woman,” will fly into the Citadel on an obliging gust of wind on March 15.

Long time Citadel patrons may remember Tom Wood in John Neville’s production of Romeo and Juliet when this “new” building opened in 1975. Well, Wood is back with the production next year — only this time as director. As adaptor (Pride and Prejudice), actor (Tonight’s Long Days Journey...) and director (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Tom has given us so many great moments over the years, the expectation of his usual intelligent, respectful, entertaining and accessible approach to Shakespeare should guarantee a first-rate production. With his appearance as James Tyrone in tonight’s production, the anticipated Romeo and Juliet, and yet another remounting of his beloved adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol coming back (for the 14th time), this is definitely the year of Tom Wood at the Citadel. Tom will be featured again (as writer) in Make Mine Love, an attempt to recreate the Screwball Comedy for the stage. Screwball Comedy describes a particular brand of fizzy 1930’s relationship movies like It Happened One Night and My Man Godfrey. Both Wood and his director Bob Baker promise mistaken identities, a ride on the 20th Century Limited, a car chase and in a notable casting coup — the Citadel’s go-to guy for everything from Grease to tonight’s Long Day’s Journey... John Ullyatt, as a charming but dissolute matinee idol (John Barrymore?) and Rebecca Northan (the incomparable Mimi of Blind Date) who plays an overbearing, but loveless, Hollywood Diva. The Champagne corks pop on May 10th. As promised, a treasure trove of theatre. Get your tickets early — sell outs ahead.

REMEMBERING
Jann Smith
An Ambassador for the Citadel Jann Smith, the Citadel Theatre’s long-time Marketing Administrator passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest on May 16, 2013, at age 62. The following is excerpted from The saddest of sad news: we’ve lost Miss Smith, by Liz Nicholls, May 16, 2013, Edmonton Journal
On paper Jann was the Citadel’s ”administrator of the Citadel’s marketing department.” But that official title doesn’t begin to encompass the breadth and depth of her theatre knowledge and experience, and the sheer variety of backstage tasks she quietly undertook for a theatre – many theatres, in truth – and an art form that is nothing if not labour-intensive. Jann, who arrived in Edmonton from Ponoka, was never on a stage herself. She’d have hooted at the mere notion of that, although that friendly voice in the dark that was the overture to Citadel shows, asking us to turn our beepers and cellphones off and Enjoy The Show! was hers. No, Jann’s work was behind the scenes. The Citadel program, with its array of actors’ biographies? A Jann task. The accounting that went into marketing budgets? Jann’s work. The arranging of opening night tickets, with all the attendant aggro with the whining media? That was Jann’s, too. “So many things she did that she wasn’t asked to,” says Cheryl Hoover, the Citadel’s director of production. “I can imagine us next week saying ‘who did that? Or that? And the answer will always be … Jann.” 36 LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
Penny Ritco, Marianne Bouthillier, Jann Smith and Bob Baker
Baker, for his part, has known Jann since his earliest moments at the late lamented Phoenix Theatre. “She was half my staff when I came back to Edmonton in 1982,” he says of the stagestruck fan who’d originally arrived in town a total theatre novice, and landed a job as an accountant at the Phoenix predecessor, Theatre 3. In their time together at Phoenix, Jann told Hoover, the stage manager there, that “she’d gone to the theatre to apply for a bookkeeping position, and someone lying on the floor with a bad back said, without looking up, ‘you’re hired!’.” A theatre devotee was born in that inauspicious moment. And in her life’s work, recognized by the Margaret Mooney Sterling Award in administration, she grew into one of theatre’s most tireless, passionate, and opinionated, champions. “She had no patience for mediocrity and for people who didn’t care enough,” says Baker. “Nine-to-fivers drove her nuts…. Not everyone on the administrative side of theatre has Jann’s understanding, her appreciation, her enthusiasm for the art…. The first reading of a play was her favourite thing ever! Her second favourite was watching the dress rehearsal…. I’d be in despair, ‘it’s not ready!’. But even if Tom (actor/director Tom Wood) and I got home at 1 in the morning, there would always, always be a message from Jann saying ‘it’s going to be fantastic! It’ll be in great shape by opening night’. It was so encouraging…. She loved loved loved the theatre!” During successive regimes in her 25 years at the Citadel, Jann linked, as well, the big brick playhouse with all the other smaller companies in this theatre town. That relationship has often been fraught. But Jann was the human face of the big-boy institution: warm, courteous, funny. “She believed in talent,” says Baker. “She devoted her life to it. And she had creative energy of her own…. Quite a life force really, a force of nature. It’s going to take me a long while to get (the loss) in my head.” We all know exactly what he means.
For Miss Smith… Over the past few months generous donations from staff, extended Citadel family and the Edmonton theatre community were collected for a bench to commemorate Miss Smith’s dedication to the Citadel. This bench will be in place for Opening Night of Long Day’s Journey Into Night and be permanently located next to the Box Office where Jann could be found every Opening, greeting our guests. We thank all who have generously donated to honour Miss Smith.
