message from the

Artistic Director Welcome to Mamma Mia!

A couple of years ago I saw the Citadel’s production of West Side Story in the Maclab Theatre. It was the first Citadel production I had ever seen, and I was blown away by the experience. Seeing a large musical in such an intimate space was so exciting. It was such a heart-pounding, visceral sensation. As I planned my first Citadel season, I knew I wanted to program a musical in the Maclab, and Mamma Mia! is the perfect one! This is truly our own unique, reimagined production of Mamma Mia!, unlike any you have ever seen. And you’re right in the middle of the action! I guarantee you’ll be swept to your feet by the dynamic performances and infectious ABBA tunes! Ashlie Corcoran is the new Artistic Director of the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver, and one of the finest directors in Canada. I’m so proud to have her at the helm of this production of Mamma Mia!. Ashlie, and her incredible creative team (Cory Sincennes, Kimberly Purtell, Peter McBoyle, Don Horsburgh, and Laura Krewski) have created a spectacular production, with an outstanding cast. It is the perfect way to transport yourself away from the winter blues, to the warmth of Greece. Thanks so much for joining us! Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS – We have recently announced our 2018-19 Season of programming, and it is fantastic! The season features the musicals MATILDA and ONCE, as well as the Pulitzer Prize winning SWEAT and the World Premiere of THE CANDIDATE and THE PARTY – two interconnected comedies. We hope you’ll join us for the entire incredible season!

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to select performances of Mamma Mia!, students enjoyed an interactive workshop on scenic painting with Nicole Deibert. Nicole Deibert has been a Scenic Artist for about 20 years, and most of those years have been with the Citadel Theatre. She’s also painted for Shaw Festival and has been the Head Scenic Artist for the Citadel since the 2014/15 Season. Nicole trained at the MacEwan Theatre Production Program. Through this workshop, students learned the basics of scene painting and how scene painters work in collaboration with the design team to turn a blank stage into an entirely different world. Johnson grew up in Wickwar near Wotton-under-Edge and attended Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton. Further plays for the Bush Theatre in London, Bristol Old Vic and Show of Strength followed along with work on television series including Casualty, Love Hurts and Byker Grove. In 2007 Johnson instituted The Catherine Johnson Award for Best Play written by the five Pearson Playwrights’ Scheme bursary winners from the previous year. Catherine won a bursary from the scheme in 1991. Catherine is a patron of the Wotton Electric Picture House in Wotton-under-Edge, Bristol’s Myrtle Theatre Company and Arts and Community in Thornbury. to find a way to ensure that the next generation had “Iawanted better sense of this history in a way they could access. ”

Sue Caribou, a frail 50-year-old, matter-of-fact mother of six told The Guardian newspaper, “I was thrown into a cold shower, sometimes after being raped.” The ugly truth of that ghastly story was, like so many others, repeated over and over again, to the ongoing Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The strap was the least of punishments. The children were forced to eat slop and rotten food. If you spoke in your own language the penance could be no food at all for as long as a week. Or perhaps, you were hosed down naked or thrown into solitary confinement. Sexual abuse was rampant. All these abuses were perpetrated against children who were torn from their families at a very young age and dumped down in what could only be described as prisons. As many as 6,000 children died in the institutions, many thrown in unmarked graves. Children of God, Corey Payette’s new musical and next on the Citadel playlist, is based on the stories of those terrible times. It springs from Payette, an Oji-Cree, and his desire to cast some light into what was once the long forgotten dark secret of Canada’s past. We can only look back in horror but most of us look from the outside. Children of God provides the opportunity to view from the inside. Payette remembers, “I grew up in Northern Ontario and that history just wasn’t talked about. That frustrated me. I wanted to find a way to ensure that the next generation had a better sense of this history in a way they could access.”

In fact, Payette has created a work based on the truth of the monstrous torment visited upon the weak and defenceless – and out of it has fashioned a universal tale of self-reliance and determination. Payette came to Children of God bringing a wealth of experience. As the Artistic Director of Vancouver’s Urban Ink Theatre, he has been an artist-in-residence at the National Arts Centre, directing plays of all sorts – from classical (A Christmas Carol – assistant director) to Indigenous (Margo Kane’s Moonlodge). He is a seasoned man-of-the-theatre and came to realize that if his Children of God was to reach beyond the bounds of the reserve he had to find a mainstream form of expression. He chose “the musical,” which is surprising when you consider the seriousness of the subject matter – which, one would think, doesn’t lend itself to the traditional view of the art form. “I felt people might more easily absorb a story of a dark and troubling history through an Indigenous perspective in a way that’s familiar,” he says. “The musicalization of the journey allows me to use music as a tool to further explore some of those really dark situations the children went through.” The result doesn’t shy away from the realities of what these innocents faced.

form really lends itself “Thetomusical Indigenous performance. ”

So, although the writer/composer/lyricist acknowledges a certain influence from the Broadway musical, in Children of God, he also effectively returns to a more traditional form of expression. “I was taught by the elders I’ve worked with that you cannot tell a story without that story having a song. You cannot sing without having a dance. The musical form really lends itself to Indigenous performance. I have long looked for a way to blend my contemporary compositions with traditional sounds such as drumming and the use of Indigenous language. I see Children of God as a contribution to the revitalization of the language. For many people this will be the first time they will have heard Ojibway spoken or sung on a stage. I see this work as being essential in our reclamation and revitalization of the Indigenous tongue.” Some modern audiences have lost interest in musicals because they can’t quite make the leap when a character suddenly breaks off a dramatic moment, strides to the front of the stage and sings, “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” The usual explanation runs, “When characters are so overcome by emotion they can no longer express themselves in words, they break into song.” To those of us who love musicals, a song reinforces dramatic action, evokes atmosphere and emotion when mere words can not. In Payette’s words in reference to Children of God, “Some songs are written in Ojibway to express huge emotions. That’s

when the piece really soars. The characters break out of their colonial context, not speaking the language that was forced upon them, but rather are able to release their hope or pain in Ojibway, in drumming and dancing, from what they remember.” Payette’s story takes place in two time periods. The central character, Tom, is a wreck. He’s easily stirred to anger, can’t hold a job and is separated from the mother of his two children. When he goes back to the reserve, he has to confront the demons that continue to haunt his fractured life. We are transported back to the residential school where he and his big sister, Julia, have been taken and the horrors begin. Whatever the musical form, will there be a dry eye in the house when one child, the victim of a horrific sexual crime casts her eyes to unforgiving skies and sings, “Can’t you hear me crying in the night Lord?” She sings to a god who appears to be deaf to these children. But, as critic Jerry Wasserman pointed out in his review of the original production in the Vancouver Sun, “The music becomes transformational, and tragedy only turns to hope as the Western song structure is replaced by First Nations drumming and Indigenous ensemble singing. This results in a beautiful and very powerful moment of triumphant solidarity between the stage and audience at the end, the kind of reconciliation this country desperately needs but hasn’t yet earned.” Anyone who has been to the movies, followed the stage or watched television recently can attest that Indigenous performers (Canadians Adam Beach/Edmonton’s Tantoo Cardinal/ Oscar nominated Graham Greene) have taken their place as actors who can perform in any company. Payette feels that his performers are in the top tier of actors anywhere. His cast

has played in major Canadian cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver. “We have senior Indigenous performers who are working alongside the next generation of Indigenous actors some of whom have just completed their training program and this is their first professional engagement.” The demands made on the performers are considerable. “I needed them to sing and act and found, when casting the show, that there is an enormous amount of talent within the Indigenous community. I could have cast the show many times over.” Children of God is currently on a cross-country tour and the reviews all agree – the cast soars. So the message here may be, “Come to see Children of God for a moving, dramatic experience but stay to bear witness to history and as an act of participation in true meaningful reconciliation.” Says Payette, “Children of God celebrates the resilience and power of the Indigenous cultural spirit. It honours the survivors and their descendants of residential schools for their strength and courage in overcoming cultural genocide. It’s a show for everyone.” Corey Payette’s Children of God will run on the Shoctor stage of the Citadel from March 3rd to 24th.

Thank You for the Music Tommy Banks

Dec 17, 1936 - Jan 25, 2018 The Citadel Theatre dedicates this production of Mamma Mia! to the late Tommy Banks. This masterful jazz pianist and former Canadian senator was a truly iconic figure in Edmonton and across the country, and served as a mentor and inspiration for younger generations of Canadian musicians. Tommy Banks was a long-standing Arts leader in Alberta. He was a founding chairman of the Alberta Foundation for the Performing Arts, and was chair of the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation from 1989-91. Tommy’s connections with the Citadel Theatre went back to its founding in 1965. Tommy was a close associate of Citadel founder Joe Shoctor, who was Tommy’s lawyer. Tommy was one of the first people Shoctor called when he discovered the Salvation Army Citadel building was up for sale and he was thinking of buying it and turning it into a theatre. In a 2015 interview with the Citadel, Tommy said he told Shoctor at the time that he thought he was crazy. As it turned out, Tommy ended up owning a restaurant in the basement of the original Citadel building. He also was music coordinator for the Citadel’s production of the Broadway musical Pieces of Eight in 1985. Tommy Banks leaves a legacy of outstanding achievement in the Arts and service to his community and his country.
