STUDENTS CLUB We are halfway through the season and we are pleased to welcome back our 1000 Students Club Members for the remaining mainstage shows. The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. n the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club O members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are then invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to seeing Mary Poppins, the Students will be joined by their host, actor and singer, Patricia Zentilli and special guest choreographer and actress, Christine Bandelow to learn about a choreographer’s role in a play or musical. Christine has taught at the Citadel Theatre’s Foote Theatre School, and her work has taken her all over North America. Students will get the opportunity to volunteer to learn a short dance routine and ask questions about different aspects of being a performer in musical theatre. If you would like to become part of this season’s Students Club, or require more information about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales, at 780-428-2127.

Christine Bandelow

For individual students who are interested in joining please email Shirley at groupsales@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

MARY POPPINS 29

I am writing these notes on the evening following our first rehearsal for Mary Poppins. It was a very exciting day. Instead of the usual read-through and sing-through of the musical, our designers and I talked the cast through the production – explaining the look of each setting and each character, and how each scene contributes to the beautiful story that we are telling. Mary Poppins is, of course, a story about family, and the need all children and husbands and wives have for love within their family. Mary arrives to mend a broken – or what we would now call dysfunctional – family. Not that it would have been unusual in 1907 London, for parents who could afford a nanny, to see their children for as little as 15 minutes a day. But whether or not it was the social norm, it didn’t make it right. It certainly won’t suffice for Jane and Michael Banks, hence the need for this mystical, and exceedingly practical, nanny. This morning I read to the cast an excerpt from a biography of P.L. Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins. It included the following: “Mary takes the Banks children on many adventures to visit her most peculiar friends and relations. It is the contrast between these adventures in Fairyland, or Wonderland, or Neverland, and the reality of life in Cherry Tree Lane and its environs that gives the Mary Poppins stories their special charm. In the real world live forlorn and rather lonely figures…in the unreal world live happier folk.” P.L. Travers spent much of her life as a forlorn and lonely figure. May Mary Poppins bring all of us some of the joy and relief she brought to her author – and to the countless children who need to know that their parents love them – even when they forget to show them. Michael Shamata Director

Sings the Tin Man looking for a heart in The Wizard of Oz, “Picture me... a balcony/ Above a voice sings low, ‘Wherefore are thou, Romeo?’” High on the charts sits that mistress of the confessional ballad, Taylor Swift: “I’m standing there on a balcony in the summer air. See the sights. See the party. See the ball gowns. I see you make your way though the crowd.” For the jazz crowd, Peggy Lee proclaimed, “Romeo loved Juliet. Juliet, she felt the same. When he put his arms around her he said, ‘Julie baby you’re my flame. Thou givest fever.’” Stephanie Meyer, who penned the hugely successful vampire trilogy, Twilight, has admitted that her inspiration was Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare wrote the play early in his career. No addled teenager-in-love he but, perhaps, his relative youth still kept the door to adolescent passion open. During his lifetime, Romeo and Juliet proved to be one of his most successful plays. Techniques, such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, have been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play. Wikipedia insists that during the 19th century, Romeo and Juliet was the number one Bardic play produced but the more complex and nuanced Hamlet took over during the 20th. Romeo and Juliet remains a strong number 2.

There are many approaches to the play and many of them have been tried. There’s the psychoanalytic approach. One critic observed that Romeo was pursuing “wish fulfilling fantasy in terms of his adult world and his hypothetical childhood at stages, oral, phallic and Oedipal.” Feminist literary critics have argued, “The feud (between the Capulets and the Montagues) is linked to male virility, as the numerous jokes about maidenheads aptly demonstrate.” How about the “queer theory” which has it that Shakespeare used Rosaline (Romeo’s pre Juliet obsession) as a way to express homosexual problems of procreation in an acceptable way. Hence the line: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” In 2010, the Royal Shakespeare Company presented a version of the play, entitled Such Tweet Sorrow, as an improvised, real-time series of tweets on Twitter. The production used RSC actors who engaged with the audience as well as each other, performing not from a traditional script, but a “grid” developed by the production team and writers. The performers also made use of other media sites such as YouTube for pictures and video. Then there are the other excesses that are oft practiced in the production of Shakespearean works in a desperate effort to make them “relevant to today’s audiences.” Some productions exchange the costumes of Renaissance Italy, where Shakespeare placed his play, with modern gang warfare or (and I saw this one) with chaps, cowboy hats and spurs that jingle jangle jingle. For me that lasts until the characters open their mouths and out comes some glorious iambic pentameter and, at once, the effect is broken.

“There will be no contemporary twist – just the essence of love and passion and fear.” One of my favourites was back in 1976. The Citadel celebrated its move from the old Salvation Army facility to Joe Shoctor’s handsome new brick and glass building where it currently resides. Traditionally it has been regarded as good luck to stage Romeo and Juliet as the first production in a new hall. The production here was by that world famous Shakespearian actor (and Citadel Artistic Director) John Neville. It was simple and memorable. It featured Canadian Brent Carver (who went on to win a Tony in New York) and a young Tom Wood as Mercutio. (Also it featured a Juliet who performed the balcony scene topless but that is another discussion.) Mercutio is a relatively minor character in the play, but as performed by Wood, he was by turns funny and fuming and the play was lessened by his murder in the 3rd act. And now, here is Wood, the director (38 years later) of a new production that previews April 5th. Current Artistic Director Bob Baker chose the play for this year’s Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. It gives the actors a protracted experience with Shakespeare and then in a fully professional production at the Citadel. The value that accrues to the audience is the incredible sense of familiarity with both text and fellow players that develops. “Romeo and Juliet is a challenge to actors,” says Baker. “It’s a very physical play with a lot of sword fighting. We haven’t done it here for 12 years and there is a whole new generation of audience out there. There will be no

contemporary twist – just the essence of love and passion and fear. Tom did (his most recent Shakespearian production at the Citadel) A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the period Shakespeare wrote it for. You may see period costumes but, with Tom directing, you can expect something live and fresh.” “No switchblades and sneakers,” chuckles Wood, “But it will be Renaissance Italy-ish. We’re not being slavish to any real year. The plague, the warring city states, the shortness and quick burning of life, that will be part of it. There’s swordsmanship, the constant referrals to rapiers and blades and daggers but there will also be love and beauty and style. And then there’s the new fad that was sweeping Shakespeare’s time – love for love’s sake – as expressed by the new poets.”

“You may see period costumes but, with Tom directing, you can expect something live and fresh.” The question that has dogged R & J for most of its existence is, were these two impetuous kids really in love or was it merely intense youthful infatuation? Let’s face it, in less than 24 hours they meet cute and decide to be madly in love and that they must marry – death, banishment and feuding families be damned. There are many occasions in the play where even a small amount of common sense might have changed the course of events but, for 500 years, audiences have chosen to embrace only the panting adolescent passion

between two individuals who don’t have enough sense to realize that half a conversation does not lay the proper groundwork for a happy marriage. In fact, if you want to probe a little further than that – what about the inevitable morning after? And all the mornings after that? The two would have certainly fallen into a spiral of resentment. Juliet would lose her dewy youth and, as one critic pointed out, “Romeo would take to traipsing around fair Verona with his bros likely reconnecting with that little vixen Rosaline along the way.” Not so, says director Wood who has spent a lot of time studying the impulsive lovers. “I think they are in love almost immediately. As a director I have to create lonely lives before the play starts to understand how they could set fire to each other so quickly. I think Shakespeare makes it clear that, as this love is tested by death and tragedy, it deepens and strengthens.”

“We have a very exciting group of actors who are going to take on these roles and although there is a great deal of work and challenge to be faced, I think this is the group to do it.” The concept of an idealized love between a 13 and a 16 year old is fairly easy to accept but there aren’t many performers out there of that age able to convey the complex emotions created by the act. In the past audiences have proven to be very acceptable of older actors playing the roles. At the age of 70 Sarah Bernhardt was playing the 13-yearold Juliet. The 1936 Hollywood version starred Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer – their combined age was 75. “I think what you do is try and find actors that have the talent and experience and, given the forgiveness of the stage, that look close to the required ages,” says Wood. “I think it’s important to believe they are young and innocent and are, in some ways, powerless in the face of the war and family wishes. We have a very exciting group of actors who are going to take on these roles and although there is a great deal of work and challenge to be faced, I think this is the group to do it.” Tom Wood’s production of Romeo and Juliet previews on the Shoctor Stage of the Citadel on April 5th and runs through April 27th.

RICHARD M. & ROBERT B. SHERMAN

Music & Lyrics

Richard M. & Robert B. Sherman were born in the late 1920’s in New York City. Following the musical career of their father, Al Sherman, the family moved to Beverly Hills, California, in 1937. Graduates of Beverly Hills High School and Bard College in New York, Richard and Robert collaborated on many projects. The brothers’ first musical collaboration took place in 1950, and during that decade they wrote hit rock songs including Kitty Wells’ “Things I Might Have Been,” Johnny Burnette’s “You’re Sixteen,” and ex-Mouseketeer Annett Funicello’s “Tall Paul.” The latter garnered the attention of Walt Disney, who invited both Richard and Robert to be the exclusive staff writers for the Disney studios. During the next decade they composed over 150 songs that were featured in 27 films and two dozen television productions. Theme songs like “The Wonderful World Of Color,” “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room,” “Winnie The Pooh,” “A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” and “It’s A Small World” are recognized as Disney standards, along with “ A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Feed The Birds” (Walt Disney’s personal favorite.) In 1965, the Sherman brothers won Oscars® for their Mary Poppins score and the song “Chim-Chim-Cher-ee.” Other Disney film scores include The Parent Trap (1961, which included Hayley Mills’ chart-topping “Let’s Get Together”), Summer Magic (1963), The Jungle Book (1966), The Happiest Millionaire (1967), The Aristocats (1970), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) and The Tigger Movie (2003). Additionally, they have composed witty and melodious song scores for such films as Snoopy Come Home, Charlotte’s Web and Chitty Bang Bang, which has recently been adapted to the stage. They also wrote scores for the stage musicals Victory Canteen (1971), 1974’s Broadway hit Over Here! (starring the Andrews Sisters) and Busker Alley (1995). The Sherman brothers wrote screenplays and song scores for Tom Sawyer (their music won first prize at the Moscow film Festival), Huckleberry Finn, The Slipper and the Rose (Royal Film Performance of 1976) and The Magic of Lassie, from which “When You’re Loved” earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Song. To date, the Sherman brothers have earned 2 Academy Awards®, 9 Academy Award® nominations, 2 GRAMMY® Awards, 4 GRAMMY® nominations, 23 gold and platinum albums, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1990, the brothers were named “Disney Legends” by The Walt Disney Company, an honor they prize. Their autobiographical coffee-table scrapbook Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond was published in 1999. Mary Poppins produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Productions, became a hit stage musical in 2004.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH

Co-Creator

From the age of eight when Cameron Mackintosh was taken to a matinee of Julian Slade’s musical Salad Days he has never wanted to be anything other than a producer of musicals. Starting off as a stagehand at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, he later became an acting ASM on the national tour of Oliver! and by the age of twenty he started to realize his dream. His first productions were small scale tours but within a very short time he had produced his first musical, Anything Goes, which opened out of town, transferred to the Saville Theatre in London’s West End and closed after a fortnight. Undeterred, Cameron returned to his initial musical inspiration and revived Salad Days. In 1973 he produced his first original musical The Card with music by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, and a book by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall. The cast included Jim Dale, Millicent Martin and Joan Hickson and ran for six months at the Queen’s Theatre. During the 1970’s he continued to produce numerous tours, notably Godspell, and in 1976 he had his first major international success with the musical revue, Side by Side by Sondheim which moved from the Mermaid Theatre to the Wyndham’s Theatre and subsequently transferred with the same cast to New York. This was followed by a hugely successful revival of the original production of Oliver! which spawned an innovative collaboration with the Arts Council of Great Britain and successful productions of two of the all-time great musicals My Fair Lady and Oklahoma! In 1980 Cameron collaborated with American satirist Tom Lehrer on a revue of his songs entitled Tomfoolery and that same year Andrew Lloyd Webber suggested that they should work together. Their first joint venture was Cats which opened at the New London Theatre in May 1981, and on the 29th January 1996 it became the longest running musical in the West End or on Broadway. The phenomenal success of this musical has been repeated throughout the world and opened an era of international musical productions undreamed of by previous generations. Following Cats came Song and Dance, Little Shop of Horrors, Blondel and Abbacadabra, before the next milestone production in 1985 with Les Miserables and Cameron’s brilliantly successful collaboration with the writing team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. Whilst maintaining an ever expanding number of international productions of Cats and Les Miserables, Cameron Mackintosh joined with Andrew Lloyd Webber again to produce The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London in 1986, and in 1987 he produced Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre. In 1989 he produced the second epic Boublil-Schönberg musical, Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where it broke the record for the longest running musical in that illustrious home of the musical. Miss Saigon celebrated its 10th Anniversary on 20th September 1999, becoming the fourth production of Cameron’s to continue running for over 10 years, and toured the UK opening in Manchester in June 2000. In 1990 Cameron transferred Five Guys Named Moe for a record-breaking run at London’s Lyric Theatre which subsequently transferred to Broadway. This hugely enjoyable show has joined the “international stable” and productions are staged worldwide. Then in 1993, he enticed Julie Andrews back to the New York stage (after a 30 year absence) in the Sondheim review Putting It Together. In December 1994, Cameron opened a record-breaking new production of Oliver! at the Palladium Theatre in London which played to packed houses for three and a half years. After a very successful UK tour, the production transferred to Toronto where it opened in November 1999. Cameron again collaborated with Boublil and Schönberg in 1996 to produce their third major musical Martin Guerre which opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London and ran for 700 performances.

72 MARY POPPINS

Martin Guerre won the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Musical. In the fall of 1998, a completely new production of this show was staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and subsequently toured the UK and the US. In 1998 Cameron celebrated thirty years as a musical producer with a special evening presentation of Hey Mr. Producer! in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. It featured excerpts from many of his productions and was subsequently released on video and CD. After the celebration looking back, Cameron continued to move forward on Broadway with a 1998 production of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake and another Broadway production of Putting it Together starring Carol Burnett in 1999. Meanwhile, in London he was at work on the musical adaptation of The Witches of Eastwick, with music by Dana Rowe and lyrics by John Dempsey. It opened in July of 2000 and ran for more than 700 performances. In March 2001 Cameron presented a new production of My Fair Lady in association with the Royal National Theatre starring Jonathan Pryce as Professor Higgins. It won 5 Olivier Awards including Best Musical and subsequently toured the U.K. and the U.S. It is scheduled to open on Broadway in the 2010/2011 season. Working with Disney, Cameron was able to fulfill a long-held desire to produce a stage musical of Mary Poppins in 2004. The production is based on the books by Pamela Travers and the Disney film that starred Julie Andrews. It subsequently opened on Broadway in the fall of 2006 where it won two Drama Desk Awards and a Tony Award. A second American company opened a U.S. tour in Chicago in spring 2009, and will be followed by productions in Amsterdam and Sydney. The fall of 2006 also saw the return of Les Miserables to Broadway in a special limited engagement, coinciding with the 21st anniversary of the show in London (now the longest running musical in West End or Broadway history). His latest production of Oliver! is currently breaking Box Office records all over again at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane and he is currently preparing films of My Fair Lady, Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. Cameron inaugurated the Cameron Mackintosh Chair of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University in 1990, in recognition of which he was made an Honorary Fellow Member of the Court of Benefactors of St. Catherine’s College. In 1992 he was presented with the Richard Rodgers Award for excellence in Musical Theater. His company received the 1995 Queen’s Award for Export Achievement and he was knighted in the 1996 New Year’s Honours for his services to the British Theatre. In 1998 Cameron was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Drama from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. Cameron Mackintosh is thrilled to be what he has always wanted to be; a producer of musicals.
