Message From The

Artistic Director

We have announced our 2019/20 Season, and it is packed with exciting international partnerships, and many Canadian, North American, and World Premieres! The 2019/20 Season will feature a new series, Highwire, which promises experiences for the theatrically adventurous. And, for the first time, the Citadel will offer a summer musical. Here’s a sneak-peek: Our summer presentation, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, is inspired by the life of the legendary songwriter, featuring more than two dozen classic Johnny Cash songs. It will be a great summer night out! Last season, the Citadel made international news for Hadestown (which opens on Broadway in March!). Thanks to that success, we have built another exciting international partnership. In November, the Citadel will present the Canadian Premiere of the U.K. smash-hit, Six! This incredible pop musical, based on the scandalous stories of the six wives of Henry VIII, has taken London, England by storm, and the Citadel is the only theatre in Canada where you can see it! The season also includes the powerful musical The Color Purple, based on the Pulitzer Prizewinning novel; the Canadian Premiere of Cost of Living, winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; the World Premiere of Edmonton playwright Belinda Cornish’s adaptation of Todd Babiak’s riveting novel The Garneau Block; the North American Premiere of Mischief Theatre’s uproarious Peter Pan Goes Wrong; and, my adaptation of As You Like It, which is set in the 1960s and filled with 25 Beatles songs! This holiday season, to celebrate our 20th consecutive year of A Christmas Carol, we are proud to present a brand-new adaptation by Edmonton playwright David van Belle. And our new series, Highwire, includes three innovative productions: the interactive Fight Night from Belgium’s Ontroerend Goed; the internationally acclaimed drama, Every Brilliant Thing, starring Edmonton’s own John Ullyatt; and After the Fire (in association with Punctuate! Theatre and Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts), a story about the aftermath of the Fort McMurray wildfire by Edmonton playwright Matthew Mackenzie. It’s a season that celebrates Edmonton’s incredible local artists, and our place on the world stage. We hope you’ll join us for the whole exciting season! Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of Matilda, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Megan Koshka, a freelance Canadian theatre designer, based here in Edmonton. She is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada and is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a BFA in set, costume and lighting design. Select credits include set and costume design for Lend Me A Tenor (Mayfield Dinner Theatre); Peter and the Starcatcher (Citadel Theatre); costume design for the 2018 Freewill Shakespeare Festival, and the Ukrainian Shumka Dancer’s World Premiere of Ancestors and Elders. Upcoming projects include set and costume design for The Candidate and The Party at the Citadel Theatre. You can view her portfolio online at www.mkoshka.com.

Megan Koshka

Through the interactive workshop, the students learned how designers work collaboratively to bring the world of the play from the black and white pages of a script to its vibrant life onstage.

director’s “Nobody but me is going to change my story” proclaims our determined and inspiring hero, five-year-old Matilda Wormwood. Matilda faces so many obstacles and bullies in this musical, but each time she summons up her courage and stands up for what she believes in. Even as the villains tower over her, she assures herself, “Even if you’re little you can do a lot, you mustn’t let a little thing like little stop you.” Like Matilda, we have all faced bullies at some point in our lives. My hope is that all of us (young and old) leave this production today ready to stand up to the bullies in our lives and say “that’s not right” just like Matilda does. This is a co-production with our friends at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg, and the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver. We started in Winnipeg. Our two Matildas (Lilla, from Edmonton, and Anna, from Winnipeg) have played in both cities. All the other youth roles were performed by local children in Winnipeg, and now a whole new cast of local Edmonton children join us for the run at the Citadel. And then in Vancouver, we’ll meet a third cast of local Vancouver children! It’s complicated, but such an incredible opportunity for all of these young performers to have a professional experience like this. It is not hyperbole to say this will be a life-changing experience for many of them, one that will stay with them for years to come. Directing this production, I have loved being surrounded by the enthusiasm and wonder of these young performers. One of the lines that gets me every time in this show is during the song When I Grow Up as all of the children sing, “When I grow up, I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown-up.” May we all take inspiration from these brave, strong, hopeful children. I wish you all much strength as you battle the creatures beneath your bed, and much joy as you dream open-heartedly about the possibilities the future holds. Enjoy the show! Colin MacLean is the dean of Edmonton theatre reviewers. In 2007, Colin was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton at the Sterling Awards.

In 1999, British playwright Alan Ayckbourn, whose restless writing spirit has often played around with our ideas of staging plays, came up with a startling concept: his House and Garden brought two plays with the same characters, in different situations, staged at the same time with the same actors. There’s even a name for it – it’s called a diptych.

Now skip ahead almost two decades and we find Daryl Cloran, then the new artistic director of the Citadel, wandering around in his new theatre – and actually getting lost in the hallways and offices. “I thought ‘we have so many spaces it would be great to use them at the same time.’” The idea marinated in his mind throughout his first year as Artistic Director but was never far away. He placed a call to Kat Sandler. Over the past 10 years or so, Sandler has written (and acted in or directed) a series of impressive successes for a number of Toronto companies, filling halls with enthusiastic patrons, garnering a mantle full of awards (A Dora – Toronto’s top accolade – and others) and forging a reputation as a fearless writer. Proclaimed the playwright, “our mandate was to create theatre for people who don’t like theatre. The idea was to choose event-oriented, funny, fast-moving plays.” Then came the call from Cloran and the idea of writing two plays performed at the same time with the same actors. What drew him to the writer/director/actor? “She’s very smart and funny and can take off on various topics. I needed someone who was willing to take a crazy risk.” “I thought it was cool,” Sandler chuckled on the other end of the three-way call. “We knew we wanted a comedy but I feel that a real comedy should be rooted in some real stakes. In comedy or drama, no matter how crazy or silly, they have to have some basis in reality.”

our mandate was to create theatre for “ people who don’t like theatre. The idea was to

choose event-oriented, funny, fast-moving plays.” The intention in the format was to show what is happening on the other side of the story. The thought being – we may all have starring roles in our own lives but we have mere walkon parts in other people’s lives. In Ayckbourn’s play, when characters leave the stage, they continue to exist. “So I started to think of subject matter. Something current that is affecting everyone. With characters that are larger than life. We needed something that we could all laugh about. Or at. Of course the answer is – politics.” The playwright found herself “fixed” on the current state of politics on both sides of the border. And heaven knows, to even the casual observer, the business of politics and show business has become indistinguishable. She was intrigued about how a tape or an email from months, or even years before, can upset a political election. “You get the feeling you know the characters and you find out, even in so short a period as a few months that there has been a great change. If you see both plays you can go backward and forward and have it play out for you in real time.”

Cloran was intrigued – already seeing the promise in the setup. “I pulled the trigger on the idea before she had written a word.” In chronological order, The Party will be the first. It will be staged in Citadel’s The Club. In keeping with the space, it will be smaller, more intimate and immersive. It’s months before a big election and audiences will be attending a fundraiser. The future is being planned – but the seeds of a major scandal are being sewn. In the second play, The Candidate, the politician is poised for victory but must cope with the results of the previous gathering and the events that have transpired since. As Cloran, good-naturedly, groused, “she had the run of the theatre and, of course, picked the two stages that are the farthest apart. She could have had the Shoctor but she chose the Maclab.” And no, you don’t have to see both plays and you don’t have to see them in any particular order. They are both stand alone entertainments. Says Sandler, “if you are someone who wants a story to unfold in linear fashion go see The Party first – but then there’s something satisfying about seeing The Candidate and finding out how all of those events were put in motion months before. Either works.” Which bring us to the elephant in the dressing room – 10 actors who, seemingly, must be in two places at the same time.

38 CITADEL THEATRE 2018/19 SEASON

“The whole thing will be terrifying and wonderful for the performers.” It’s obvious that some of the actors are going to be unmoored objects hurtling between the two theatres during the performances. As Cloran observes with a quake in his voice, “I’m sure Kat is mapping all that out.” (The phone conversation took place a bit more than a month before the first rehearsal.) “The most complicated part in the writing is who is available on the other stage. The whole thing will be terrifying and wonderful for the performers. But I won’t be standing in the space in front of Second Cup during the performance – we may have to hire a couple of traffic cops.” And to complicate matters, Cloran has thrown another disruptive element into the mix. He has been fascinated by the work of the local company Theatre Yes. Their specialty is to present plays anywhere but on a stage. (You may remember the series of short entertainments they presented a few years back – in Edmonton elevators.) Again, struck by the alleyways and halls of the Citadel, Cloran has invited them to present one of their own specialized projects throughout the theatre during the run of The Party and The Candidate.

The company has enlisted ace Edmonton playwright Beth Graham to come up with a production that will be gleaned from interviews with magicians, police detectives, criminal lawyers, fact checkers, journalists and psychics – and inspired by hard-boiled detective fiction. They promise us that the show Slight of Mind will shine a light on the nature of truth. Which means that any actors running between plays may also find themselves in the middle of the Theatre Yes show. With great glee Cloran extemporizes, “there may be a moment when members of all three casts will meet in the lobby.” Sandler is writing both plays employing the same technique that powered all her successes. “Every script I write finished on the first day of rehearsal. I like to have a room full of actors so we can kind of workshop the script as we go along. I love the feeling of a living, breathing entity until opening night. I love when the actors have input into the words they are going to say. It’s like having a company of minds working on something together.” (At this point, I would swear Cloran went several shades whiter as he asked, “will I get a working script soon?”) Both will be directing both plays. “We’re probably going to be directing on the fly,” offers Cloran. “Kat will join me when she can, but, I suspect, for the first while she’ll be working on the re-writes that will no doubt be coming along. We’ll need a few hard-working assistant directors to help us get things straight as we’re running back and forth between the theatres.” Will audiences embrace the two shows? Cloran obviously hopes so. So far, the signs have been good. For one thing, Cloran is so enthusiastic about the show that he can hardly wait to see how it’s all going to come out. “I always get so excited to see people’s faces light up when I tell them and they realize what a crazy idea it is.” Says Sandler, “because it’s about politics, I can work with so many basic human emotions as well as humour, satire, old time Hollywood tropes. There are a lot of ideas to work with in a brand-new format.” (On the phone you could tell that a new idea was forming.) “I’ve got to get back to work. Enjoyed the talk. Bye.” And she was gone. The Citadel’s joint productions of The Party and The Candidate start March 30. Theatre Yes’ Slight of Mind starts March 27.

I always get so excited to see people’s “ faces light up when I tell them and they realize what a crazy idea it is.”
