Welcome to Million Dollar Quartet! You are going to have a rockin’ good time getting to know the young men that would grow up to become the music legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. This production is skillfully directed by Edmonton’s own Ted Dykstra. Ted is the perfect director to helm this production, as he knows this music and era inside out, having played Jerry Lee Lewis masterfully in Fire — which he starred in at the Citadel in both 1986 and 2008. He and our incredible Music Director, Bob Foster, have captured that unmistakable 1950’s rock sound in this production — raw and gritty, but full of hope and potential. I guarantee you’ll be dancing in your seat! To me, this show celebrates the ephemeral — an incredible fleeting moment when all of this musical genius collided in one room. This fantastic cast of multi-talented actors and musicians will transport you back to that moment for a taste of how amazing it could have been. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family. Enjoy the show!
Sincerely
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
PS - Next up in our season is our beloved production of A Christmas Carol. This Edmonton holiday tradition is back for it’s 17th year. And this year we are incredibly excited to welcome back Tom Wood as Scrooge! We would love for you and your family to join us to bring in the holidays together.

Students Club
The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community. As such, we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club is such a program – one that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students are invited to stay for an informative talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on singing harmony with Kim Mattice-Wanat, performer, teacher, director and founder of Opera NUOVA. Since its inception in 1998 she has served as Artistic/Managing Director and has directed several productions. She currently teaches for the Citadel’s Young Companies and has served as musical director for the Citadel’s A Christmas Carol. For over 25 years she has taught voice at the University of Alberta in the drama department and regularly works as a clinician and musical director throughout Alberta. Her commitment to sharing her expertise with singers and actors has earned her extensive recognition including Global Television’s Woman of Vision Award, The City of Edmonton’s Salute to Excellence in the Arts Award, The YWCA’s Woman of Distinction in Arts and Culture Award. Through the workshop the students were able to learn the basics of expressive singing, and now better understand how singers maintain their own artistic voices while blending with their stage partners to form an exciting and vibrant harmony.
If you would like to become part of Students Club, or to learn more about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales, at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

director’s notes
Million Dollar Quartet is a monster hit throughout North America. You are about to find out why. It’s a simple premise: on December 4, 1956, before they were forever to become icons of American music, these “boys” – Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley – shared some time together, in Sam Phillips’ soon to be as iconic Sun Records studio. As I write this, we are in our second day of rehearsal in the Citadel rehearsal hall. To the left of me is a maquette – which is a tiny, exact model in every way – of the incredible set, based of course on the real life Sun Records Studio, where the legendary meeting that gives this show its name took place. The designer extraordinaire Cory Sincennes was just in here and we chatted about how the opening was going to work on the set, as well as the best spot for Jerry Lee’s piano. In my head I could already see the possibilities that will be presented when lighting designer Michael Walton, another genius in his field, gets to town early next week. Meanwhile my favourite musical director in the world and very close friend Bob Foster is taking Vanessa Sears and the gang through a version of I Hear You Knockin’ that we found months ago while preparing our musical ideas for Million Dollar Quartet. It’s a dirtier version than the Broadway productions, and we are all liking it very much. This cast (Bob and I scoured the continent!) is “killer”, pun intended. So here I sit, asked to pen my thoughts for the program, and all I can think is: I’m one lucky guy. It’s going to be a great show. So nice to be home. Enjoy, Edmonton! Ted Dykstra

T he return of
Tom Wood There’s a familiar Christmas ornament
gracing our season this year. Tom Wood, who first adapted Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for Bob Baker’s Citadel production in 2000, and who memorably played the role for many years, is returning to the lead role. He’ll be sharing the character with Glenn Nelson who has been playing as the show’s alternate Scrooge for the past four seasons.

No one who has seen Nelson’s take on the cold-hearted, tight-fisted old misanthrope and his ghost-ridden transformation into the very spirit of Christmas will ever complain that they have seen a lesser performance. But somehow, Wood seemed to not portray a character but to inhabit his soul. The actor immediately endeared himself to Edmonton audiences and for a decade nightly donned the dark, Dickensian garb and fearsome mien of Ebenezer Scrooge. The first time I saw Tom Wood he was a U of A student – a skinny kid who ran off (or more correctly peddled off on an early version of the bicycle) as one of Stephen Leacock’s whimsical Canadian eccentrics in an early 70’s Mark Schoenberg production of Sunshine Sketches. Intense, versatile (and hysterically funny when occasion demanded) he went on to fashion one of the most distinguished careers in Canadian theatre. In 1998, accompanying his partner, director Bob Baker, he relocated to Edmonton and as a playwright has gifted us with a series of dazzling adaptations (Peter Pan/Pride and Prejudice/Vanya) and as an actor, memorable performances (Big Daddy/Willy Loman/ James Tyrone). But, I think it’s safe to say, that no role he has played has been so universally embraced as Scrooge. Says Wood, “It has become the favourite role of my career.”

Forthwith: Tom Wood (and others) on “A Christmas Carol.” WOOD: Last year was the 50th Anniversary of the Citadel. Bob (director Bob Baker) asked me if I wanted to come back but James MacDonald (who has played Scrooge with distinction for the past four seasons) was doing a great job and I didn’t see me swanning in to ‘take over from the rookie.’ But then this year James was unable to take the role and Bob asked again. I was conflicted because I loved the experience so much.
Tom Wood: unsure. The “actor’s nightmare.” WOOD: I had been away for 7 years and I wondered whether I was still up to it. Even when I was working, if I had a break of a couple of months, I would worry, “Oh gawd, have I lost it?” After considerable thought – I decided to go ahead.
Reclaiming Dickens’ vision. WOOD: Originally I wanted to have nothing to do with the project. I didn’t know who Scrooge was. In my mind he seemed to be a grumpy old man who became happy. He was often pictured as cute and funny and you know that he is going to change immediately

when you see him. It was all done with a wink and a nod. Bob said, “Just read the book.” I did. I read it and by the end I was in tears. The story haunted me.
Tom finds younger self in an old book. WOOD: At times when I was unhappy I thought a lot about changing my life. I realized how hard that process is – to try and change after we have been molded. I came to realize why Scrooge is such a miserable old coot. He’s been shaped by all the pain in his life – a pain I could retrieve from my own younger life. It was sort of like Freudian psychology in the 1800’s – like sitting on a couch and telling of how you couldn’t get along with your father. Talking about how money, and the lack thereof, can affect decisions on whom you’ll marry. You can see all the great wounds in his life and as he begins to understand himself – you begin to understand him too. Dickens was so smart. Christmas is supposed to be about a rebirth and Dickens has taken this broken man and given him a new life.
Making the playwright’s dream real. The production was to be the largest and most complex in the Citadel’s history. It was to tax the production facilities (and budget) of the theatre as never before.

WOOD: It was a big deal for the Citadel. It was a new play and an untried story. BAKER: We ran the idea by Joe Shoctor and then took it to the Board, and I must admit we asked for a lot. But they unanimously supported it. WOOD: There was no way the show would make its money back in one year. We hoped we could amortize the cost over three years if we hoped to break even. That would mean a three year run was necessary. The production is now in its 17th year. The last two years have seen the largest audiences the show has ever generated.
Kipling: “If you can keep your head when all about you is chaos...” Famously, the first preview night of A Christmas Carol went on without a complete dress rehearsal and without a hitch. BAKER: We had managed a kind of cue-to-cue but never put the whole production together. I told everyone, “Just keep going until we can’t.” Time ran out. The dress rehearsal stopped at the end of Act 1.

BAKER: “I knew we had something great in there somewhere but I had zero objectivity by curtain time on Opening Night. The older actors were fearful. The kids were hysterically excited. WOOD: I tried to concentrate on telling the story. On making it work. Actually, I have a vague recollection of running and running so I didn’t have time for too much fear. I think I was in a state of shock. It was a blessing of sorts. BAKER: I guess we had blind faith we would get there. WOOD: It’s a little like going to war. You train for that moment. You do the repetitive stuff – the stuff you’ve trained for. You put on your uniform. You get in the truck. You figure out what your first objective is. The big battle lies before you but you have to concentrate on one moment at a time. It was the greatest challenge of my life but I loved it. We all were running in the same direction – we were all hoping for the same miracle. BAKER: Tom’s complete focus during the rehearsal allowed him to remain impressively composed when surrounded by the chaos. WOOD: I was terrified. Wood came through as anyone who was there that night will remember. So did the production. At the end, the audience rose as one to their feet and applauded. They never twigged to how close the production came to disaster.
Tom Wood climbs his own Everest – on a nightly basis. WOOD: It’s two hours of intensity. You’re offstage for maybe 4 minutes. For the whole evening you are either running to your next appearance or changing costume. I’m not complaining. It’s a big story and you need to invest in it but I’m not as young as when I first
played the role and my knees are sort of bad. I have to climb a lot of ladders and stairs. As an actor I start at the beginning to try and make it impossible to like Scrooge – that’s an important part of the journey. I feel elated at the end of the night and I think the audience is too. But, I had to have an assistant to help me drag my sorry ass to my dressing room.
The unexpected longevity of A Christmas Carol. WOOD: I’m overwhelmed. I’m told that a lot of people have made our play a destination for Christmas and I’m very happy about that. Something happened and people are identifying with the show in that kind of way. We picture the kind of suffering that Dickens desperately wanted to call people’s attention to when he wrote the book. And I think what keeps the play rolling is that it is such a great message at Christmastime. BAKER: Tom’s writing and performance transforms people. It’s one of the true pieces of theatre. Theatre is a tranformative art form. People leave the theatre different than when they came in. And that is witnessed when the patrons leave 20, 50, 100 dollar bills for the Food Bank. They have been reminded of the power of generosity. Tom Wood is sharing nightly performances this year with his redoubtable fellow actor, Glenn Nelson. The first night which will feature Mr. Wood, is November 26.
