Message From The

Artistic Director Welcome to Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley This season, our productions are opportunities for us to ReImagine familiar stories through a new lens. This script, by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, is a fantastic imagining of how the lives of the characters of Pride and Prejudice may have continued after the book was over. The story focuses on the often-overlooked sister, Mary Bennet. It is the perfect combination of period romance and contemporary humour, and it is easy to see why Lauren Gunderson was the most produced playwright in America last season.

It is my pleasure to welcome Nancy McAlear to the director’s chair for this production. Edmonton audiences will know Nancy from her many years as a member of the cast of A Christmas Carol, as well as her innovative (Sterling-nominated!) directing of numerous productions at theatres around the city. This beautiful period world has been designed by the incredible Dana Osborne (Set/Costumes), Oz Weaver (Lights), and Jonathan Lewis (Composition/Sound), and our cast is comprised of incredible performers from Edmonton and across Canada. This year we are “doubling down” on the holidays at the Citadel, with our productions of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley and our 19th annual production of A Christmas Carol! We are also hosting our first annual Dickens Fest – which includes a Christmas market and teas, and a Victorian dinner party complete with parlour games, caroling, dancing, and a chance to visit Pemberley. The building will be packed full of holiday celebration. We hope you’ll join us throughout the month to celebrate with us! Merry Christmas!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of Miss Bennet, students will participate in an interactive workshop with Mieko Ouchi. Mieko is a playwright, actor, and director working in theatre, film, and television. Her plays, The Red Priest (Eight Ways To Say Goodbye), The Blue Light, The Dada Play, Nisei Blue, I Am For You, Consent, and The Silver Arrow have been nominated for several awards, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama and the City of Edmonton Mieko Ouchi Book Prize. Mieko is co-founder and current Artistic Director of Concrete Theatre, a nationally recognized 29 year-old TYA touring company. She is currently working on several new projects: a new play called Burning Mom with Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre, Fu-Gen Asian Canadian Theatre and The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and an adaptation for Vertigo Theatre, as well as co-directing/dramaturging an opera for families by Dave Clarke performed in sung English and ASL. Through the workshop, the students will learn how playwrights adapt different popular forms into a script ready for stage production, just like Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon did with Jane Austen to create Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley.

Director’s Notes

Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley places at its center, the

middle sister of Pride and Prejudice’s Bennet family, Mary. At a time when women were educated just enough to be socially entertaining in order to land a husband, and to help the advancement of said husband, Mary’s curiosity, honesty, and desire to learn for her own edification most certainly seals her fate as a spinster. Who among us has not felt, at one time or another, invisible, like Mary? Or thought; if I were only more ‘this’ or less ‘that,’ I’d be happier, less lonely or more successful? I’ve always loved underdog stories. They give hope to anyone who has ever felt that they don’t quite fit the mold of societal expectations. I can’t think of a better show for me to make my Citadel directorial debut. I have found myself of late feeling distressed and concerned by the news of the day and, as I write this, I’m launching into our second week of rehearsals with an incredibly generous and talented group of individuals who make me laugh, and bring joy into the room every day. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is about new beginnings, family, love, hope, and acceptance. I hope this production provides you a short respite from the stress and chaos of the times we now live in, and that you have a joyful holiday season with loved ones. – Nancy McAlear

Perhaps, then, we could launch a final “hale and farewell” to the elegant Bob Baker/Tom Wood Christmas production that has warmed our hearts and launched our festive season for the past 19 years. Having looked back over the articles I have written on the production, here are some thoughts as a memory of Christmases’ past. Bob Baker - Director: “In my early years in Edmonton, I was taken aback by the community spirit. And I knew the theatre had to tap into that.” Tom Wood – Writer/actor (Scrooge): “When Bob approached me with the idea of adapting, my immediate reaction was, ‘Oh no! Do we really need another Scrooge?’ And then I re-read the original and by the time I had finished I sat there bawling my eyes out.” Bob: “I decided we’d put all our resources into it. Maybe people would come more than once.” Opening night was in November of 2000. The show that the audience saw that night never had a full run-through. There had been a truncated effort at a dress rehearsal but as Baker told Foreshadowing, “We started the rehearsal and when we ran out of time – we stopped...” But the gods of theatre hovered over that holly-filled night and a Christmas miracle happened. “I knew by the second act that I could stop worrying,” said Bob. At the end, the audience rose from their seats to give the evening a heartfelt standing ovation,

never triggering to the knowledge of how close the Citadel’s Christmas present came to turning into a lump of coal. In 2000, Lester Myhr was the head carpenter of the Citadel: “It took six weeks to build the set – myself and six carpenters. The biggest undertaking was ‘Merry Town,’ the spinning jewel box of a Victorian street. Then, there was Scrooge’s huge canopied bed. It was a real elevator. It weighed in at 928 pounds and was so perfectly balanced you could move it with your finger. We had to build the set around the elevator and the canopy became the deck for all subsequent productions.” The backstage was a frenzy that few had ever experienced before. “You had to choreograph yourself with the actors. If anyone zigged when they should zag, the whole set could come thundering down upon them in the semidarkness.” In those days, Cheryl Hoover was the stage manager (now Director of Production). She sat in the booth, high over the audience, presiding over an army of carpenters and dressers the audience would never see. She watched the action on two television monitors – one showing what’s happening on stage and the other a special system that allowed her to peer into the backstage darkness. Her world was peopled by three dressers, two wardrobe maintenance people, three lighting technicians, two sound men, four stage carpenters, three assistant stage managers, two wig and make-up people, and one child wrangler.

Siobhan Pettigrew was costumer: “The set stretched over two floors and you have to be where the actors are when they come off stage. I got it timed to about 20 minutes into the second act when I get my first bathroom break. The production was toughest for Tom (Wood). He’s only offstage for about six minutes – and even then he was changing costume.” (In fact, Tom moved so quickly he magically appeared on stage twice – at the same time). A running crew of costumers was always at hand on a daily basis with needle and thread to look after the 1,500 pieces that just simply wear out. Far be it from me to draw back the curtain to expose the wheels and ropes, but with this production off to join the Spirit of Christmas Yet To Come, now it can be told. When Marley’s fearsome shade springs from his grave in that terrifying opening scene – there are two carpenters and an electrician packed into a small wheeled set on stage behind him. The eerie door knocker that scarily morphs into Marley’s head requires (as per Shelia Cleasby – Head of Electrics at the time), “...two actors – and two men to move the scenery. I unplugged the door and jumped on it as it started to roll or I would get run over.” I could uncover no technical explanation as to how Marley rises and floats out through that window or how the Ghost of Christmas yet to come disappears from the middle of the stage. The best explanation probably came from my six-year-old grandson, Luceo who, when I asked him how it was done, observed: “It’s simple, Grampi. It’s magic.” Of course!

32 CITADEL THEATRE 2018/19 SEASON

It took a lot more than technical legerdemain to bring forth tears from audiences. And so, loyal patrons, you won’t be surprised that the genuine emotion was shared on both sides of the curtain. Here are some comments from actors who have participated over the years. The Ryan family had been woven into the fabric of the production. When we talked to her in 2008, matriarch Maralyn Ryan had put her individual A Christmas Carol, 200 0 stamp on Mrs. Dilbert, Scrooge’s much put upon housekeeper, for eight years. That year, her daughter Kate, had been playing the steadfast Mrs. Cratchit for three. Maralyn Ryan brought a distinguished career in theatre but, despite her long experience, the actor told Foreshadowing that she was never more moved on a nightly basis than she was in A Christmas Carol. “It was unique – and it was there every night and it was always the same.”

Actor Jeremy Baumung: “You can feel the audience on the stage. And the more we felt, the more we came together as cast on stage. I could look into the eyes of a fellow actor and share the genuine feeling we were all together to make this thing happen.” Bob Baker: “London was overcrowded at the time. I want to create a sense of that community. Always someone watching or just sitting in the shadows. Ragamuffins always on stage.” Tom Wood: “It’s tough not to fall into old line readings. But the children. Ah, the children. Every year they brought the innocence of being in the moment. They are not trying to construct anything else. They keep you grounded.” Ben Wheelwright played Tiny Tim in 2002. Remembers Ben, “I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into but the older actors really welcomed me into the group. When it was over and we had to say goodbye, there were a lot of tears.” Over the years, actors from four to 90 years of age performed in the production. As a final gesture to what has gone before, Daryl Cloran has given us a gift. In what he calls “a celebration of our incredibly talented local artistic community,” this final production will be the first one with an entirely Edmonton-based cast. The final production of the long-running version of A Christmas Carol begins on November 30 and runs through December 23 in the Maclab Theatre of the Citadel.

UMED AMIN Arthur de Bourgh

This is a play about hope and change and love and new traditions. I think it’s an important piece of theatre, given the current political climate. To any children reading this, I implore you to follow your dreams. I feel so blessed to make money doing what I’ve wanted to do since I was eight years old. I took a leap of faith after reading an actor’s bio telling me what I’m now telling you, and here I am, years later, flourishing in an environment I chose for myself. You can do it too. I believe in you. Thanks for being here.
